- In recent times, Short Scale Basses have been enjoying a moment in the sun. It's no surprise that two of the most popular choices amongst bassists for 2021 is the Fender Player Series Mustang Bass and the Squier Classic Vibe Mustang Bass. Today we put them both to the test to see which one comes out on top!
In this video, Jimi puts the Fender Player and Squire CV 60s Mustang Basses head to head! We run through the designs, specs and even a tone demo.

I think the fact that the squier even had a fighting chance, let alone winning, is a testament to how far squier has come
I own both of these bases and everything you said in your evaluation is right on. I prefer to play the squire over the Fender most of the time.
Squier hands down for me. Really pronounces the vintage tone. The modern player is exactly that, modern. Both great for different reasons but the Squier is what I'm looking for
Glad I was able to help out. I think that the Squier is a bit closer in design to the ‘Vintera’ fender series, which is closely based of the original variants of the Mustang Bass. Thanks for watching!
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me
@Otis Kylo Instablaster :)
@Jude Zain Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.

Man i subscribed yesterday, and today you gave me Exactly what i was searching for. Thank you
Thank you for the kind words Suleiman! I really appreciate the subscription, and thanks for watching
Would be interested in a shootout between the classic vibe and the vintera
I bought the Classic Vibe version a year ago and it’s an amazing bass and killer value. I did a little minor work on the frets after I broke it in, and it plays perfectly. It’s important to get the right medium scale strings for the string-through body, even though Fender doesn’t even make any. They provide the 9050L flat wounds on the JMJ Fender version, which are also great.
I went with the squier and have zero regrets. I'm putting the money I saved towards upgrades. I got an abalone pick guard. Next is labella mustang flats and then some nordstrand pickups.
I'll probably find a way to add some weight to the body to reduce neck dive in the future as well.
Fun and concise, another great video. The squier was surprisingly good. Did sound a bit muddy but I can't get past how the p/j set-up looks on the fender either. Would be good to hear your thoughts on a Mexican p bass Vs any/all of the squier classic vibe p basses at some point, if possible.
Thank you for the kind words Hamish! I’ll try and get my hands on the Player Series Mexican Precision Bass at some point, great suggestion. Thanks again for watching
Thank you for the video. I’ve been crushing on the Squier CV 60s mustang all year. Could you do a more in depth review just on that?
Thank you Peter! I did a review on the Squier CV Mustang Bass at the end of last year. You can check it out via the link in the description! Thanks again for watching
Personally I would only use the bass tones on both, so I feel that the Squier has warmer sound overall. Fender more treble in it, which is good for recording it alone, but in a mix I would prefer just the warm deep sound
A few years ago I ordered a Fender Player Mustang, got it, noticed a bunch of finish flaws, and returned it. Then a year or so later, I ordered a Squier Classic Vibe Mustang, LOVED IT, but ended up returning it because I decided I wanted the American Player version instead. Which I never bought. Eventually then I bought ANOTHER Fender Player Mustang, which I still own, but I'm not happy with it. Rough fret edges and a few uneven frets, loose and noisy pickup toggle switch, really buzzy J pickup. I swapped in a DiMarzio noiseless pickup to fix the latter issue, and I've used it a lot for both gigs and recording, but I am just not happy with it. I probably should have kept the Squier!
Great comparison. I just bought a Sterling Stingray shorty-scale bass ( made in Indonesia ). I am extremely impressed with the: finish, neck, fret-work, action, sound quality and playability. also: Got a Fender Rumble 100 and it's a little Beast. oNe LovE from NYC
Thank you Michael! It’s always nice to get some love from the other side of the globe. I can’t wait to try one of the stingray short scales, keeping my eyes open! Thanks for watching
I own a 2018 Mustang PJ bass and I agree, the frets are sharp. You a shouldn't have to the fret edges on a $600-ish bass to make the neck feel comfortable and not scratch up your hand.
Also, there is some neck dive, which I fixed by swapping the tuners with Hipshot Ultralights. Unfortunately, nobody makes matching lightweight tuners vintage style Fender tuners.
This means that installing lightweight teardrop shaped tuners will leave 16 holes and 4 tuner plate impressions showing on the back of the headstock on your fairly expensive bass. I solved this problem by hand making my own aluminum beauty plates, using the stock tuner plates as templates. If you stare at my tuners from 6 inches away, you can see that the beauty covers are hand made and don't match each other exactly perfectly, but from about 1 foot away, it's not easy to see. The Ultralight tuners made a big difference in the neck dive.
Thanks for watching Sky, and thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. Keep on rockin!
Great video ,,i just ordered the squire btw,, I watched a few other videos on it and a lot of people say to switch the strings to flatwound , would that make a big difference ?if so how ? Could you comment on that , ( thx a lot ,,,it’s my first bass)
Thanks Moledog88! I’m sure you’re going to love the Squier Mustang Bass. In fact, I’ve done a video on Flatwound vs Roundwound strings using the Squier Mustang Bass. Definitely go and check that out, and you can hear the difference! Thanks again for watching
The sound is the most important. The materials too!!
Which one would you choose? Thanks for watching!
I bought the Squier and love it. Still wondering if the Fender Vintera series would have been worth the money.
I’d love to do a comparison, but the Vintera is a bit out of my budget right now! If I find an affordable second hand one I’d love to do a shootout. Thanks for watching
Dude I really do love your reviews. The intro, the shirt, the "colour palette" and the attitude (obviously the guitars too).
I've got a question for you, don't you feel like the Squier's got a lame output in the E string? (can't talk about the Fender model cause I only own the Squier). I love that bass, but the output is lousy, for real, specially with that string.
Please don't stop doing bass reviews cause you're amazing at it. Cheers from Mexico.
Thank you for the kind words! I’ve been a little busy but I hope to do more reviews soon. Thanks again for watching
I’d love to see the JMJ edition in this comparison too
i played one of those the other day amazing
If I was after a short scale, I would get the Squier and upgrade the pickups. I just think it looks better, but needs a bit more oomph.
There’s plenty of room in the budget for upgrades if you choose the Squier! Thanks for watching
The pickups are a bit on the quiet side. I use a boss GT1B to boost it. Between the preamps, limiters, compressors and EQ options you can get the squier thumping.
I bought the MIM mustang. Love it but the frets are sharp and the bridge pick up don't seem to fit right. Quality control? Not up to the stanards for the price.
I agree. By the time I'm done modifying my Mustang PJ, I will have changed or worked on almost every single component. Sadly, if I had just waited about 18 months, I could've bought a Squier Mustang, and I probably wouldn't have had to do anything to it.
Does anyone know if standard short scale strings will fit (this being a string-thru) or if medium scale strings are needed? Thanks
Hi Mark! For the string through type you’ll need Medium Scale strings. Thanks for watching
I restrung the squire with flat wound medium-length due to thru body stringing. Short scale, well came up short. Used D’addarrio chrome flats. Bass sounds real nice.
Squier sounds like someone put a heavy blanket over the amp. I like a good clarity of tone to start with then you can EQ warmth into the sound. Glossy necks are a no-go for me, my thumb sticks to the finish.
I like the way the Squier looks with the split pickups but if it has more sound like a modern P-bass it would win. I think a good compromise would be kinda midsized P bass and J bass pickups to fit the profile of the mustang body. That would be the ultimate 'stang bass.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and thank you for watching!
Even though the Squier doesn't have the clarity and sounds somehow can-ny it has it's own character and that defines a great bass 😊👍
Great video. Greetings from Germany
Thank you Philipp for watching! Stay warm 🥶
Glad to see Bam Margera looking healthier
Haha! I was called a jackass whilst driving today. It’s a sign
The classic vibe's neck is to die for but sound wise, the Fender wins, I have both
Squier for the pickup.
This was fun, but I think it's better to compare basses of the same price point. After all, Fender's intent is not to have Squier compete with Fender, just to get you hooked on the Fender experience and hopefully move up the ladder.
Thank you Bob appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
I have to admit I prefer the sound of the Squier!
It certainly has a more classic mustang sound! Thanks for watching
Since when is the mexican version the one to measure up too. The american performer series mustang has made a mustang that can hold its own against any pj bass.
If you can’t get a Vintera or Better, Classic Vibe is definitely the way to go.
Squier sounds OK as a practice instrument or for a gig, but it's definitely not the sound you'd wanna use for recording. Giving the price I'd say there are lot's of better options for the money.
I just feel like i can always tell the difference between squires and fenders--the squires just sound more "stiff" if that makes sense. fenders have a looser slinky and groovier sound which is undeniable. it's unfortunate bc theyre so damn expensive
2:41 no slapping the bass man ajajajaj
Thanks for watching!
@@91cog I like watching
The American Performer is the best of both worlds.
So what if you have both? 😂
Squire mustang vs
Squire bronco
Aussie dollarydoos
This shootout makes no sense to me. Why would you be comparing two basses with completely different pickup configurations instead of the vintera mustang?
Good point - the Classic Vibe vs Vintera would be a good shootout! Thanks for watching
Because lots of people will be considering buying a Squier but wondering whether they would benefit from paying twice the price for a fender.
The Fender sounded much better in my opinion. A more professional approach to the whole instrument rather than just focusing on price and looks like the Squier does.
Thanks for watching Javier!
the fender sounds like any short scale pj. the squier has the trademark mustang sound.
Put P&J pickups on a mustang is a shame... squier wins.
Thanks Vince! The Squier certainly pays homage to the original Mustang Basses
"The (Fender) uses better quality materials..."
No it doesn't. You base that assertion what? That the Canadian maple that Mexico uses is better than the Canadian maple that Indonesia uses? Who out there (besides SRV) actually prefers ugly Pau Ferro to Indian Laurel, which is a better and better looking wood? I could mention the body wood, but why? It make ZERO difference in a solid-body electric with non-microphonic pickups, obviously. They share the same bridge made in Taiwan, and the same tuners. It is so lazy to ASSUME the Mexican has superior materials to the Indonesian. And it's wrong. Please stop spreading misinformation and learn about these things before making another video.
Hooley Dooley! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sean
The wiring harness in the fender definitely uses better materials...also I have 3 mustang pj's with maple fretboards, better than pao ferro or indian laurel imo
Im already 25, is it too late to learn bass? Hahaha
It’s never too late my friend! Thanks for watching
Age doesn't count its the passion for the low end and enjoy the grooves. Greetings from Singapore
Fender basses has been disappointing.
Squire sounds dull
I hate 38mm nut widths so both are out for me. I other than that the Squier looks and sounds better.
The Player doesn't really know what it is, it's not really a Mustang with PJ pickups, so sorry of sounds like a P bass but certainly not an actual Mustang.
