Absolutely love the sound of both rounds and flats on a Mustang bass! Just a quick advice: if you’re going to restring a Mustang Bass, use medium scale strings. Although it’s a short scale, the way it’s designed requires medium scale strings

LaBella makes a set of flatwounds specifically for the Mustang called 760F-MUS. Bought a set for my CV Mustang and they've been on it ever since. Only gripe I have with them is that they are only available as medium thickness (.043-.104") and I like my strings thicc.
Btw, I've also read that a lot of people have been complaining about QC issues with the CV Mustang, but mine is absolutely impeccable. Fret ends are perfect, frets are perfectly level, no problems with the pots or tuners, tight neck pocket, great action, spotless finish etc. I guess I was just lucky when I ordered mine.

I really liked the DI tones the best for all the demos here. For some reason, the modern amp, to my ears, added a coloration that I wasn't quite feeling. I also did like the tone wide-open for those examples. To each their own!
I was also curious about the Mustang's tuning stability, but since you didn't bring it up I'm assuming it wasn't much of an issue.

I've got a 1977 Fender Mustang bass , left handed with the Antigua finish. Bought it used around 1982. I had it modified with a Bass Ass bridge, a Dimarzio Jazz pickup near the bridge and and a Dimarzio "mudbucker" looking thing in the front. A split tone control was added also. Although I now had a hotter bass with more tonal versatility, I was kicking myself. From the guy who did the work, He discovers through Fender / serial number that this was a custom order one of a kind bass in 1977 AFTER he did the modifications.
It is a hot sounding little bass though, and if you're doing many sets a night, your shoulders will thank you later.

I have a string through body and have used Ernie ball short scale strings and I find the string is a lower gauge on two of the strings just where it passes over the saddle. Leads to the A string popping out of the saddle. (may need a saddle replacement too) but definitely needs the medium scale strings.

I got one last year. I’ve recently become a flatwounds fan, and the most difficult thing for me with the new Mustang was the incredibly bright, zingy strings. I have had roundwounds on every bass I’ve owned until very recently, and I always liked them, and still do, but I realized that it’s been years since I had *new* roundwounds on a bass (I don’t change strings, pretty much ever), so it’s actually only the sound of old roundwounds that I like. So anyway, with the new bass, I figured I’d swap flats onto it at some point, but in the mean time I thought I’d try an experiment by “artificially aging” the stock roundwounds it came with. I rubbed a bit of hemp hand cream into them to simulate the kind of oil and dirt that strings get exposed to over time that mellows the brightness. I honestly didn’t really expect it to work, but it didn’t matter, because if it was a big fail, I’d just go ahead and put flats on. But, to my surprise and utter satisfaction, it worked better than I ever would have believed. It’s sounds like I have a new set of flats on it now, and I saved myself about $60.

Agreed on the sound, just ordered a pair of La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass medium flats to go with my blue competition mustang bass. Using an Ampeg Micro VR mini stack, which I will be replacing the always-on fan in. Plugging that into the matching Ampeg SVT-210 cab; which I think this bass won't overload with overly deep sub frequencies. On your demo, Iiked the flats, with the vintage amp, whether the tone was quite open, or maybe mid-way; though not closed on the vintage amp. The opposite on the modern amp, preferred it closed down, maybe 25-33% open would be ideal. Have a KMA Machines Queequeg 2 Octave pedal on the way, to use with my MXR Timmy Boost, Darkglass Hyperliminal Comp and EHX Green Russian Fuzz; which I think should make a sound synth bass funky. I think these mid-focused short-scale bases work very well with pedals - will be cool to try something like a Darkglass Microtubes X with it too. Dry neck is an issue on my Mustang 6-string electric guitar too, but once treated, it's good. And like you said, they benefit from a bit of work, a professional setup. The pickups honestly I think sound good. With a boost in front helps them kick (b)ass, at better volume. The Squier CV guitars, like the Jazzmaster, or better yet the Squier J Mascis are generally better than the Fender Players series too. I've heard lots of people say the Player Stratocaster is good though.

Top tip for oiling the laurel fingerboard - use, sparingly, some boiled linseed oil. I did my son's Squier FSR Bullet Mustang guitar fingerboard and now it looks beautiful. Dark like rosewood.
I got this tip off Roger Sadowsky from one of his posts on Talkbass years ago. It's what he uses on the rosewood of his USA builds. Just a dab from the BLO bottle onto a piece of clean kitchen roll, rub it in, they wipe off immediately with a fresh piece. A little goes a long way.
Rosewood only needs this doing once as it's already a rather oily wood, with the laurel it took me 3 passes using the above method with 10 mins between passes.
Also, boiled linseed oil is inexpensive and you can buy it in any hardware shop.
Great review Johnny! I've just ordered this exact bass because of it.

Great video johnny! would love to see you try some actual medium scale basses and see your thoughts. I have an ibanez srmd (basically a medium scale sr bass with a pickguard), and while i find the electronics leave something to be desired, the medium scale neck is just so comfy, literally the perfect middle-ground between short scale and regular. bought that bass in 2019 as i was transitioning from mainly playing guitar before but i always found that 30" scale basses have a bit too much of a toy-like feel, the strings are always too floppy for me, and i was honestly just a little scared of the full 34" scale. Now i have 2 full scale Jazz basses that I use mainly with bands, but my little medium scale still lives at home and is just so fun to play and come up with ideas. I think it was also easier transition to a full scale after using the medium, compared to going form 30" to 34" right away

The new Harley Benton mustang-ish has a slight problem (from my point of view) in that you can't select the pickups so you're only getting both pickups on. That way it's dificult to get that Mustang tone since you'd need an isolated neck pickup sound for that. Obviously, you can mod it to solve that but the basic design doesn't offer that.

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 Год назад

I have heard they can be good/decent to sucky and now they will not accept returns by just saying that is how the instrument is supposed to sound in most of the designs. Then in the active series they need work due to no grounding on the inside as they painted over the metal spray on coating and could kill somebody if used in an old amp pre 1972 that is missing the safety parts a modern amp has if there is an electrical surge.

@@JonnyDibbleYeah, I think these are imminently fixable, new pots, even the Seymour Duncan pickup would be a bump up, and low tension flats, like the La Bella's in the green package. But regarding pickups, if I'm going to spend $100 I might as well spend $150 on handwounds. (But not dad-rock handwounds...)

When I got my first short scale I had to learn that it sounds best when your attack is soft. The strings seem to react better.

@Jonny Dibble Yeah you've been able to make some of them sound good with your hard picking I just personally haven't... mainly going back to when I played guitar. 2-3 strum's and the whole damn thing was outta tune. I did see those newer ones with the good looking pickups in a store and I came close to trying one out but after seeing your disastrous adventures with those things I'll stick to my script. I'm not a fan of fender basses in general though. They're not my style. That stingray you got, THAT'S my style!

Made the mistake of buying a squier classic vibe 70s jazz bass new lil over a year ago as a spare. It’s not playable. Frets cut your hand, multiple high and lose frets. Terrible experience. Fender is no help even though it has a 2yr warranty. Seller said sorry it’s past the 45day return mark. Save yourself the headache and pass on these toy instruments. By the time you modify this toy you could have bought a much better instrument to begin with. I’ll stick with my 16yr old Ibanez and continue to look for more exactly like it.
