Another fun fact for you about Veruca Salt: The middle section of "Volcano Girls" where they break it down for a minute is (1) a callback to their first big hit, "Seether," and (2) also a reference to the Beatles. After the Beatles released "I Am The Walrus," there was a lot of questions and debate among the public about which one of them was "the walrus." In the song "Glass Onion" from the Beatles' White Album, John sings:
"I told you about the walrus and me, man
You know that we're as close as can be, man
Well, here's another clue for you all
    The walrus was Paul"
In that middle bit of "Volcano Girls," Nina sings:
"I told you about the Seether before
You know the one that's neither or nor
Well, here's another clue, if you please
    The seether's Louise"
Louise, btw, was the dark-haired one playing guitar (whose power-pose during the solo you admired). On that last line, you saw her put her hands up and smile like, "Yep, that's me."
Also, Veruca Salt named their album "Eight Arms To Hold You" which is a reference to the original title of the Beatles' movie, "Help!"
So, I don't know who all Veruca Salt was influenced by, but the Beatles are definitely on that list.

So many great female singers in the 90's- these two, Kay Hanley, PJ Harvey, Delores O'Riordan; Kelli Ali; etc etc etc. Not even counting the Country singers- there was just an insane pool of talent in Nashville then.

Hole, Garbage and Veruca Salt were my "Girl Power" trifecta in the 90s. Although they were on the alternative radio station here in L.A. quite a bit, they were kinda an underrated rock band which sucked because they're good. This was a time NuMetal and Grunge was on the scene so we were hearing more guy fronting NuMetal and Grunge bands. But these girl bands kicked a$$. Love it. 😎👍Happy Holidays to you and yours! ❄🎄🎁

Others were Liz Phair, Urge Overkill (Sister Havana), The Bodeans, Freddy Jones Band (In a Daydream), Ministry, Local H, Material Issue, The Jesus Lizards, Eleventh Dream Day and, of course, the most famous were Wilco and the Pumpkins. As 60 year old dude from Lawrence Kansas man, I am just tickled that you guys ran across this. The bottleneck was or still is actually kind of a small place but maybe the crowd capacity is supposed to be like in excess of 500 people and the fire marshal wouldn't like it but it often went up to 700 what's your account for everybody letting people in the back door and just coming into this hot crowded space. I was mostly familiar with them from College radio on our local College radio station kjhk 90.7 FM and at one international awards for one of the great College stations because we had such a vibrant music scene.
But anyway I'm so glad you guys reacted to this and I'm just trying to paint a picture of one random person experiencing them on a local tour back when you drove from town to town in a van that would often break down and just playing for your next gas money and maybe the record label through you a little money but mostly they fell short on their side of the deal usually. When you're in your twenties and doing that stuff it's all so real.

I've been sending you requests for this song for close to a year. I don't know if my emails made a difference, but glad you finally got to it. Their only other big hit was "Seether" which they even mention in this song. Now PLEASE do "Down By the Water" by PJ Harvey!!! I've been asking forever. It's so cool, weird and sexy all at the same time.

    • @MadSlantedPowers

As a PJ Harvey fan, I think I would choose a different song from that album. "Send His Love to Me", or anything from "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea." I haven't really gotten into anything after the "Uh Huh Her" album, but lots of great stuff up to that point.

You want to hit on more 90's rocky type of music with female leads? At some point you have to listen to Garbage. They have a lot great songs. They have both Rock and Trippy songs. The trippy songs are more like, "Milk", "Queer", and "#1 Crush". THey rock quite a bit as well. "Stupid Girl" is rock with some industrial influence sounds as well. "Vow", "I'm Only Happy When It Rains", "Special", "I Think I'm Paranoid", "Why Do You Love Me".. They some more upbeat sort of poppy songs as well Like, "When I grow Up", "Cherry Lips", and "Androgyny". Then they also have a different sound from songs like, "Bleed Like Me". They were also on a James Bond title song with, "The World Is Not Enough" which is good as well. I'm sure I may have missed a few to put in there as well.

♥ Veruca Salt. Check out their songs: Seether & Shutterbug
BTW - they're big Beatles fans. Bit of trivia. This was off their album 8 Arms To Hold You which was the original title of The Beatles film Help
Also the line 'Well here's another clue if you please The seether's Louise' is an homage to a line from Beatles song Glass Onion:
'Well, here's another clue for you all. The walrus was Paul'
Now you need to check out Band Maid & The Warning! 2 all female current rock bands

Fun fact: the song Everlong is about Louise Post (the female guitar player/singer with black hair). Her and Dave Grohl dated in the 90s. She even sings on the song but it’s hard to make out unless you’re looking for it.

Screamed when I saw that you final reacted to Veruca Salt. I believe I have requested them 2-3 times this year to be on a Female Friday. So happy that they finally made the line up. Next up form them should definitely be Shutterbug! Also, I highly recommend that you check out The Sounds if you want a real rocker lady, Maja Ivarsson. They're early 2000's and current. Great songs like Painted By Numbers, Ego, Queen of Apology, Beatbox, Something To Die For, and so many more.
I know you also mentioned Lzzy Hale. You should check out song she did with Lindsey Stirling called Shatter Me.

I saw Veruca Salt in 1997 with Bush in Madison, WI, and again in Chicago at Jamborie '97, 90s female rock, Garbage, great band, go with "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" or "Temptation Waits". They are probably the best female rock band of the 90s. The lead singer Shirley Manson had another band called Angelfish, listen to "The Sun Won't Shine" or Sonic Youth " Bull In The Heather".

Got to see them live in Tampa back in March of 1997. A group of us that were going to the concert decided to get a hotel downtown close enough to the venue that we could just walk to the concert and then hang out later that night and not have to worry about driving. Funny thing is that it turned out the band was staying in the same hotel as we were and a couple of my friends ran into them in the elevator and even got some autographs if memory serves right. Was a great show as well...loud as hell! They were opening for Bush who were early on with the Razorblade Suitcase tour.

Their album “American Thighs” is a reference to AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” The drummer was the singer’s brother and he learned to play by listening to Zep/Bonham. Seether was their first hit. They have some strong songs. All Hail Me is a great song as well.

You can totally hear the John Bonham influence in how hard he hits those drums. Also, just to be clear, he didn't play the drums until he joined the band. He played other instruments but they needed a drummer. So he took on the drums because they asked him to do it.

This song was definitely a response to the Spice Girls “Wannabe” in terms of showing that “girl power” didn’t have to exist in one specific way.
Spice Girls: So tell me what you want what you really really want.
This song: Tell me tell me what you really want from me…
But this song is a bit more reticent to join in on the rainbows and unicorns trail.

    Leave me, Lying here
    Cause I don't want to go (3x)
Tell me, tell me what you really want from me
You've got to let me know
I'm falling off and I need you terribly
One down and one to go
Volcano Girls we really can't be beat
Warm us up and watch us blow
But now and then we fail and we admit defeat
    We're falling off
We are watered down and fully grown
    Leave me, lying here
    cause I don't want to go (2x)
A million miles of running and I hit the wall
I bounce back and run some more
But this is it I'm giving up I'm calling quits
So get down and meet me on the floor
Way to go way to flip off everyone
I steal your thunder then I try to bolt
But I could stand a little pity now and then
    I'm falling off
I am watered down and fully grown
    Go I don't wanna go
    I don't wanna go
    I don't wanna go
    I don't wanna go
I told you about the seether before
You know the one that's neither or nor
Well here's another clue if you please
    The seether's Louise...
    1, 2, 3, wow
    Leave me lying here
    Cause I don't wanna go (3x)
Leave me, leave me, leave me
    Go I don't wanna go
    I don't wanna go
    I don't wanna go
