My favourite The Cardigans song has to be "My Favourite Game"... man, I played that song to death back in the day! "Erase / Rewind" Is another fantastic song of theirs.
Another band with a female lead singer from the same era (or a few years later) was Garbage. Check out their song "Androgyny".
100 % with you with "My Favourite Game" It's on my Spotify rewind every year I play it that much I adore it!! 🥰
Me too! Fabulous track
Upvoting this for "My Favorite Game" and "Erase/Rewind". And to endorse reactions to songs from Garbage.
"Garbage" is an incredible band, and just recently put-out a a new album. Lead singer Shirley Manson also had a tremendous dramatic turn in the "Terminator" TV series, "The Sarah Connor Chronicles", starring Lena Headey, AKA Cersei from "Game of Thrones" or "Maw-maw" from Karl Urban's "Dredd".
100%
A great female band to react to is The Corrs. Amazing band from the early 2000s with excellent music. A band of sisters (and one brother). Breathless was a huge hit. Andrea has such a pure voice
Great suggestion 👍
Enjoy ✌️😊
Yes, their song “Breathless” is a great song. I use to hear it all the time on the radio in the early 2000s, now I don’t ever hear it anymore… I actually forgot about that song for a little while.
They are like this incredibly talented family of beautiful people...."the Irish would rule the world if not for the booze", is what my Dad would say
My favorite song by the Corrs is "When the Stars Go Blue," which was a collaboration with Bono from U2.
Great band, love all their songs. But not all Female. The brother is also in the band.
Anybody else have songs that they hated as teenagers, but listening to them now brings you back to a better time?
Yes, but in my case that would be disco.
Lol, yes, I hated that stupid song tub thumping back in 1996 but it’s cool now for some reason lol and bitch by Meredith Brooks.
No all songs I hated when I was younger I still hate.
@@bradparnell614I always say there was no genre called Disco. Disco music was any danve music played on Discos.
The music was typically R&B, Gospel, Soul and Latin based songs
Interesting. I enjoyed those genres. I also enjoyed rock and pop except for when they went disco.
Core memory unlocked: my friends and I used to play this on the Pizza Hut jukebox constantly 😂
This song was in the Romeo + Juliet film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. You should definitely check it out! ❤
Yes Baz Luhrmann movies are iconic!
hah yes! I totally recommended that movie when Jay mentioned he'd never seen any adaptation of Romeo & Juliet and Amber said they needed to remedy that! It's such a perfect solution with a fab soundtrack, guaranteed to please all parties!
Afaik there was also a version of the video with clips from the film?
I just came to say similar! Sleepovers watching R&J while crushing on Leo and wishing our actual crushes would be half as romantic 😂😂
This song just absolutely EXPLODED when Baz Luhrman used it in the "Romeo & Juliet" soundtrack with Leo and Claire Daines
Great movie.
The Cardigans had the uncanny ability to sound both modern & like a nostalgic 60's throwback at the same time. I'd also suggest their songs "My Favorite Game" (watch the official video - it's a blast), "Erase/Rewind", "Carnival", "Sick & Tired", "You're the Storm", "I Need Some Fine Wine & You, You Need to Be Nicer", "For What It's Worth", "Hanging Around" & "Your New Cuckoo"...just to name a few.
What a great song! Their song "Carnival" is one of my favorite hidden gems of that time.
Great Swedish band. This played in so many clubs here in the UK back in the 90s ☺️ Highly recommend their song 'Erase/Rewind' (director's cut)
Best of them
This band had some great tracks, the ones which I recommend are:
"Erase/Rewind",
"My Favourite Game",
"Hanging Around",
"Rise and Shine",
"Sick and Tired",
"Celia Inside",
"Burning Down The House" with 'Tom Jones', cover of the 'Talking Heads' track.
There are many more but these are good ones to continue with.
"Erase-Rewind" is my favorite. I also prefer the alternate video to the one they watched here, I think this was the sanitized American version.
@@rarelycares8416 Yes, you're right it was. "Erase/Rewind" is such a great track, it's my favourite of theirs.
This is easily one of my favorite 90s songs.
@@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13 They're a great band, I loved loads of their stuff.
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. I know I at least l like a couple of their other songs as well. I’m going to go listen to them again tonight. 😊
One of the best uses of this song was in Romeo+Juliet with Leo DiCaprio and Claire Danes
Can't believe they have't heard this song. It was late 90s and EVERYWHERE.
Of course they heard it
Nina have passed me once or twice on her bicycle in Malmö, and none of you would probably recognize her. She rocked this, and the entire band is still phenomenal!
As a Swede who was a teen in the 90s, I was very happy/nostalgic to hear you react to this song!
One of the best songs of the 90s
❤This song was in two of the biggest films🎥of the 90s Romeo+Juilet and Cruel Intentions. It automatically takes me back to that time.
I forgot. It was one of the reasons I bought the "Cruel Intentions" soundtrack. That film and us sings were awesome.
I don’t remember this being in cruel intentions. Buy it’s been YEARS since I’ve seen it.
This and "Milk" by Garbage are two single reasons to watch Romeo+Juliet.
Yes! I listened to the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack over and over again. This brings me right back to that time too 💞
I heard that song on the documentary: "Enron, the smartest guys in the room" and brought me the old-better times.
All right my babies.... I have heard the song plenty of times in the 90s, I just never knew who performed it. This is awesome 💯🔥😁👍🏻
One of my favorite 90s songs!
this whole album is severely underrated
Strongly agree, pure, slightly cynical, 90s indie pop perfection.
Good band!
Rob's eyebrows raised quite a bit after he saw how hot the lead singer was, lol.
Still waiting to hear some GARBAGE. 🙏🙏🙏
Stupid Girl 👍@@Tobiasmax3000
The blue contact lenses are a bit much
@@ckobo84Are they actually contacts? Her eyes are very blue and if you look at the background, the blues are insanely vivid. It could be just the film stock and processing that made them look freaky.
@@Dreyno definitely contacts. very popular then.
Didn't recognise the song title but as soon as it played instant recognition.
Like everyone and them too
1992....Sophie B. Hawkins....."Damn i Wish I was Your Lover".
Wow. Not many remember her. That’s the only song of hers I remember.
Omg yes
Yes, yes, million times yes
She did a great duet of Burning Down the House with Tom Jones !
I just posted about this song, but couldn't remember what it was. I should have scrolled down! Thanks!
Hi Jay and Amber. Another 90's female singer you should listen to is the band Garbage. A few songs I suggest are Only Happy When it Rains, #1 Crush, Stupid Girl, and I Think I'm Paranoid.
Shirley Manson is badass! Remember Tracy Bonham? She’s cool too!
Yes Garbage! I've suggested this before
I’ve begged for Garbage
@@DPRyan-vd5pp I forgot about Tracy Bonham! Mother Mother Love it.
#1 Crush for sure!!
This song was on the Romeo and Juliet movie soundtrack. I love it ❣️
The Cardigans also have a song called Carnival that was featured in the first Austin Powers movie.
Damn her eyes 👀 !!!
*Filter - Take A Picture* - a great late 90's song
The Cardigans recorded a song with Tom Jones! in 1999 "Burning Down The House" that became a big worldwide hit.
I think my favorite song by The Cardigans is "Erase/Rewind." For something different, check out their lounge style version of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." Another great cover is the one they did with Tom Jones of the Talking Heads song "Burning Down The House."
The Cardigans had one of the greatest videos of the 90s with, "My Favourite Game". The video was banned in some counties and has 4 different outcomes in the end.
This is easily one of my favorite 90s songs.
This was a song I loved the first 1,000,000 times I heard it. They overplayed it so much I grew to hate it. Now that so much time has gone by, I love it again!
Also don't forget to check out:
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad
Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side
Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For
Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango
Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time
Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
Christina Aguilera - “GENIE IN A BOTTLE”. My favorite of hers.
Great suggestions!
Tom Jones tried to reach a younger audience and did a series of duets with more modern artists - one was with Cardigans; "burning down the house". Nina's cool voice together with the powerhouse Tom Jones was awesome. A video worth checking out since i know you guys really dig Tom. 😀
The lead singer of this group did a great cover of "Burning Down the House" with Tom Jones - you should check that out!
I second 😊
I'm still hoping you will get to Sophie B Hawkins, "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover!" This was a massive hit in the early 90's. Such a fantastic song.
Love this song 💞
My favourite game intro for" Grand Turismo" Play Station
I love "my favorite game " from them
The Cardigans have a great back catalogue. Every album is excellent. The band were into metal but recruited a singer with the lightest voice and started churning out incredible pop/rock/indie music. Including some Black Sabbath covers and homages.
And Nina was everyone’s crush in the mid nineties.
The Corrs have been mentioned. I agree. They are Irish and simply fantastic. There are many songs you can delve into. Runaway is another one. It’s one of their biggest hits.
The Cardigans - Erase / Rewind “Director's Cut” 👍👍👍
All songs I request are in my music playlist
If you need some more 90s Funky Swedish music , these songs are a must : "Smile" + "Stone me into the groove.." by Atomic Swing.. They are just an awesome band !! :D
I saw them for free in early 2000 when I was in vacation in Stocholm, they are sweden. It was a good concert, the lead guitar was amazing, he changed the guitar almost for every song! My favorites of them are "My favourite game" (more rock then Lovefool) and "Erase/rewind".
Another awesome 90s band fronted by a female singer is Garbage. They also had a song on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, "#1 Crush". But they have a bunch of great songs. One of my favorites is "Only Happy When It Rains".
"My Favourite Game" is one of my favourite tracks & is on my Spotify rewind every year I play it that much!! It just has so much nostalgia & power that makes me love it!! 🥰🥰🥰
This "Lovefool" was popularised further by Baz Luhrman's adaptation of Romeo & Juliet staring Leonardo Di Caprio being on the OST. It's for me a 90s classic & really takes me back to my younger years as a late 80s baby 😢
The '90's had some great Europop. New bands, with their own style, performing original songs. A good groove.
Thank you both so much, not just for your weekly but your Friday program as well. Here are some additional great female artist songs you both might like listening to from the 80s and 90s. Basia - Time And Tide, Sam (Samantha) Brown - Stop, Sarah McLachlan - Good Enough, and Lisa Loeb - Stay.
Definitely listen to Sam Brown, Stop!
Oh absolutely! I've been waiting to see a reaction to Sam Brown: Stop for sooooo long
Don't forget The Sundays. Just like Nina Persson, Harriet Wheeler has an absolutely angelic voice which is difficult not to fall in love with.
This song is one of my guilty pleasures, much to the ridicule of my guy friends (dude, turn in your man card). Such an awesome combination of retro disco bass/drums and 90's pop. Love it!
Great memories with the Cardigans, thanks for this! I agree with others suggesting the check out "My Favourite Game" from them next! A cool tune!
Try "My Favourite Game" by the Cardigans
I love it how @2:19 everybody's head is tilted at the same angle. 🥰 But omg you NEED to hear The Cardigan's "Favorite Game"!! Like, srsly. You will not regret it.
Check out her collaboration with a great group called The Manic Street Preachers and the song "Your Lover Alone is Not Enough" it rocks!
I have always thought of her voice like velvety or silky. It is just so smooth.
Great choice for 90s female-Friday. Another 90s female-Friday band to check out is The Sundays: "Here's Where the Story Ends" or "Goodbye"! Keep it up!
Love the Sundays!!
love this recomendation and I add Innocence Mission: "Umbrella" or "Lakes of Canada" or "One for Sorrow Two for Joy"
Yes!!
The nostalgia! Omg! And yes, we need more Janet too, so I'm waiting to see the "If" reaction. 😉
Nina Persson with Manic St Preachers "Your love alone" is an amazing trac and Cardigans "Hanging around" is an often looked over track.
I first heard this on public radio. Its the second reaction song I've heard this morning I originally heard on public radio.
The music is wonderfully soothing and her voice adds so much emotion to the point when you actually listen to the words, it makes you really feel sorry for her and really want her to find love. At one point I was trying to open up to all kinds of music and my friend, who worked at a recording studio made a mix CD for me. This song was on it. I don't know how many times I hit the repeat button. Nice and calming while driving. I was also trying to listen to more female vocalists and I fell in love with her voice and the way she sings this song.
Very big song. She sounds a lot like Gwen Stefani & the whole vibe of the song is like either her solo or a No Doubt song.
Mary Weiss just died. She was the lead singer for the Shangrilas. Next Friday maybe do "Leader of the Pack," "Remember Walking in the Sand," or "Give him a great big kiss" by this ultimate 1960s girl group.
Another vote for checking out Garbage as another 90's/early 00's female fronted band. Their singles from their first self titled album are all great, but I think their fourth album Bleed Like Me was super underrated and has some great videos. They also did the theme for the James Bond film "The Word Is Not Enough" that has a great video as well.
One of my go to karaoke and norabang songs because the audience participation is off the charts with this song.
Another great band beautiful and awesome lead singer too
I always remember this song playing on the radio in the car to my aunties wedding i was a bridemaid when i was 12yrs old singing my heart out 😂❤
This band, like a fine diamond, has many facets. Please dive deeper in this rabbit hole. "Don't Blame Your Daughter", "Favourite Game" (Video Stone version), "Feathers and Down".
A perfect Cardigan song for female Friday is "I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need To Be Nicer"
Also one you should be curious enough to try is Cardigans with Tom Jones, covering Talking Heads, "Burning Down The House".
Dive deep and enjoy! Cheers\=/\=/
I recently rediscovered this band and never realized the depth they have. They cross many genres. Back in the day I only knew this one and My Favorite Game. I missed out in my youth not delving in back then!
@@fortmanr It's not a race.😁 The important thing is you're discovering more of them! Good on you. If you haven't, listen to "No Sleep" It's hard not to fall in love with Nina Persson. She's also been in a band called Manic Street Preachers, worth a listen. Music is a journey not a destination. Enjoy. Cheers\=/\=/
This type of bright, pop rock was so fun! Reminded me of some other songs I don't think you have reacted to - Matthew Sweet "Girlfriend" (1991), Michael Penn "No Myth" (1989, but sounds so '90's), and Shawn Mullins "Lullaby" (1998, and such a '90's song it is ridiculous! The video is pure '90's Los Angeles and advertising campaigns for 90's fashion).
Funny you should say you feel the 90's groove. At the time, they were very much considered a throwback to 60's lounge. Carnival is another great song by them. Then, also from both Sweden and the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack, You and Me Song by The Wannadies. Plus, the gorgeous Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You by Des'ree.
True, but there was also a general resurgence of '60s/early '70s culture in the '90s. Smash mouth makes note of it in "Walking on the Sun", criticizing the somewhat shallow and corporate nature of the revival, which was done without any of the counter-cultural politics originally attached to the movement (and when Smish smosh is criticizing your political emptiness, you done messed-up).
@@michaelccozens You're not wrong! However, in this case, it was always (at least until then) very much their style. And lounge music had never been much for politics. Totally see your point when it came to the "summer of love" in Madchester, though, to name but one example.
This song premiered in a Romeo Juliet Remake with Leonardo DiCaprio.
5:00 I just love the 90's aesthetic and this song fits it to a tee. "Groovy" whenever I hear this song makes me think of my favorite film Romeo + Juliet
I love the Cardigans... YOU'VE NEVER PLAYED MICHELLE BRANCH,,,, ""EVERYWHERE TO ME"" & "GAME OF LOVE " FEAT,,, CARLOS SANTANA.
The lead singer always gives Debbie Harry vibes.
Even though it's 90's I always saw this as a throwback to late 70's New Wave stuff.
This brought them onto the scene and was their biggest hit but my favorite songs of theirs over this one is "My Favorite Game" and "Erase and Rewind".
90's Female Friday suggestion - "Wannabe" by The Spice Girls.
Cardigans put out an album in 2003 called Long Gone Before Daylight and I think it is one of the best albums of the past 20 years. Seriously. It’s so damn good. I highly recommend reacting to “You’re the Storm.”
I think that album is the band at its best.
love that album.
One of my favourite albums. Barely a bad track on there.
One of my all time guilty pleasures.
"I Need Some Fine Wine and You Need to be Nicer" I think is more in line with their average sound. This was a more bubblegum pop track, they actually have a lot of depth as a band
TOM JONES DOES A SONG WITH THE CARDIGANS
A cover of Talking Heads "Burning Down The House"! Great video. Amber, if you're still doing covers, this should be on the list.
They’ve got an awesome hard rocker called “My Favorite Game” too.
Love this song!
That song is burned into my memory from playing Gran Turismo 2 back in the day. Love it!
The love I fell in when this song came out was so deep, im still crawling out out it and she has no clue. One Hell of a song and the best time the World ever had and will never have again....❤
This brings back memories from college. Love this song.
This wasn't the kind of music I listened to when I was a kid, but it has always brought me much joy as an adult. A lot of my childhood memories are gone or hard to get to. When this song comes on I'm on the school bus home from middle school. I can see the faces of my childhood friends so clearly even though I haven't seen them for decades. I can smell the sea breeze in the air and the In N out burgers when we made that left onto PCH. I can see, smell, and hear Love fool on the radio like it was yesterday. Music is amazing.
"erase/rewind" or "my favourite game" from them, they're a great band!
I haven’t heard this song in 20 years and I still know every freakin word!! Lol
I first saw this on "VH1" around 1996-1997, which was a music video cable channel where I watched new music videos since MTV was not really doing that anymore. So different from everything else.
So wonderfully soft, so wonderfully depressing when you listen to the lyrics and the band has a great metal background and still sounds like this. What's not to love?
I saw these guys in the 90's and they were great live. There are so many 90's female singers that you're missing out on.
They are from Sweden. Oh, the memories!
I'm a big fan of The Cardigans. "My favorite Game" is another great song and crazy video.
This song is my guilty pleasure. When it comes on the radio, I always turn it up and sing along.
This was one of those songs that will instantly take me back to a specific time in my life: Junior year in high school; spring 1997; art class. My teacher would put the radio on while we did our art assignments, and this song came on at least once a day.
I'd love for you to listen to The Sneaker Pimps "6 Underground" next. Fantastic female lead band from the 90's.
Communication is my favourite song of theirs. Just an achingly beautiful tune and it's hard not to fall in love with Nina's vocals.
The Cardigans have always been one of my favourite bands. Saw them on tour playing Gran Turismo album in full and a greatest hits set a few years ago - there was a really cool moment when the sound cut out during this song and the crowd continued singing along with just the sound of drummer playing. Also saw Nina singing with James Yorkson in a super intimate venue of 140 last year. Voice is still amazing and those eyes are still just as striking.
I love The Cardigans! You're right about the groovy sound to Love Fool, and a good number of their other songs have a good groove to them. Erase/Rewind is a great song to check out for more grooves from them. However, one of my favorites by them is I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to be Nicer (that's the whole title!), has a real gritty sound to it and shows another side of the band's sound. That's a real solid track to react to !
Best song still rocking to this in 2024
This is from the soundtrack to Romeo & Juliet by Baz Luhrman, you should absolutely check that movie out. It stars Leo Dicaprio & Claire Danes.
Nina Persson singer of The Cardigans was on a song by The Manic Street Preachers "You're Love Alone " well worth checking out.
I liked this song in the '90's...heard it all the time. Had a great Rhythm and Hook. She has a pretty voice for that song. God bless You Guy's
