My first concert was the tragic kingdom tour. Great show. Great several albums. And Gwen is an absolute beauty. In the video for "underneath it all" I fell in love
Hell yeah! I sometimes find myself going to listen to a song from it, then I see Spiderwebs at the top of the track list and I've just gotta listen to the whole thing. Fantastic album.
"Spiderwebs," "Hella Good," "Just a Girl," "Bathwater," "Sunday Morning," "Underneath It All"-all great songs. Have fun falling down the No Doubt rabbit hole, Jordan. Gwen is an amazing artist and a very underrated songwriter.
You guys mentioned how good of a singer she is. She used to jump around while singing. Like from the massive speakers and different parts of the stage and would not miss a beat, no change in her breathing...nothing!! She used to sing while running on the treadmill to improve her stamina and keep her breathing strong while she sings. She was truly dedicated to her craft.
It's all about Tony, her bass player. Amazing how she was able to keep it together and maintain the band while she was carrying around such a heartache. Speaks VOLUMES about her strength and professionalism. The turmoil was there with the band bc all the attention was on her. But they worked through it. Loved this reaction.
@@LilRocker2005 I'd hate to be that guy making a whole album about my breakup with a fellow member. Side question, did they do any other albums? And if so, were they any good/worth listening to?
@@NYC_Goody "Tragic Kingdom" was their 2nd album I believe and it is considered their "Breakout" album. The follow up called "Return of Saturn" was pretty good and the one after that "Rock Steady" also had a couple hits. Some of the songs I recommend checking out besides "Don't Speak" are "Spiderwebs", "Just A Girl", "Simple Kind of Life", "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", "Underneath It All", and "It's My Life" Another album in a similar vein to "Tragic Kingdom" is the album "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac. Each member of the band was going through their own stuff and it's all in that album! Two of the band members were married and were in the middle of a divorce while the album was being recorded, two more of the band members were dating each other and were in the midst of their own breakup, and the 5th member of the band was also going through his own divorce all while this album was being written and recorded!
To make things worse, the song was originally written to be a love song. The words "don't speak" were about how they didn't even have to say how much they loved each other.
@@LilRocker2005 Well, if you are going to mention Fleetwood Mac, don't forget ABBA. One song is a divorce song about band members and then they have "knowing Me, Knowing You".
Gwen is known for being singer of No Doubt for almost 20 years, more than ANYTHING else.. and it blows my mind that there are adults that never heard this song no matter what you listen to... it literally feels like you had to come from different planet not to know this lol.
Honestly, if I didn’t join the Coastguard and live/work side by side with so many white shipmates I wouldn’t have known about them either. This just isn’t casual listening where I’m from. Especially back in the 90’s where your music opinions were limited to your budget.
@@Donkor640 I'm not even talking bout your music taste or buying records... I don't know maybe it's a cultural thing that depends on the country or environment you live in. I know here in Europe in most countries you couldn't go through the late 90's/ early 2000's without hearing this song EVERYWHERE! on radios, on tv, in all pop top charts, in cafes and bars, in clubs, in malls.. like everywhere,! so it's just strange to me that someone could have never heard it :)
Gwen Stefani's solo career was pretty huge in the mid-late 2000s. I can absolutely see casual listeners only knowing her solo material and her public image. However its pretty difficult not to have heard Don't Speak at least on the radio or on TV even in the 2000s, but I would not be surprised if people associated the song with Gwen Stefani's solo career.
@@Donkor640 I grew up in Africa and this song was on the radio at least 5 times a day from 1995 to 1997 on just about every station that played "International Pop music"...
One of the reasons she's putting so much emotion into the song is that she and the bassist, Tony Kanal, had actually broken up after a long relationship, and on top of that this video did indeed come out at a time when the band was dealing with a lot of tension because the media focused on Gwen over the other members. No Doubt ended up breaking up in 2003 and the members went off to do solo projects, only getting back together briefly in 2012 for another album and then splitting again.
I had always thought this was just a break up song, but watching the video again here, I see the turmoil between the band and wondered. Thank you for confirming that.
Thank you for sharing this. I scrolled the comments before I wrote that all out.. and was grateful you beat me to it! Also.... Gwen stated in an interview when this first came out.. how badly she felt. She really truly didn't want to be centered out and didn't like how the media and the entertainment industry was trying to make her the main focus and the star of the band. That it made her embarrassed, and felt very uncomfortable. I remember thinking wow.. I see why this was happening.. because she was and is a star.. but also I felt for Gwen. She was so kind going to bat for the band.. and did her best to downplay her role.. so the band members could shine in the interview.
"I'm Just A Girl" is definitely worth checking out too. In Australia We've had some pretty Amazing Female Artists. But prior to RUclips etc. they don't seem to be very well known in Other Countries. In the 90's there was Batchelor Girl a duo with lead singer Tania Doko. They had some terrific songs such as "Buses And Trains" and "Treat Me Good". I think you'd Love "Permission To Shine" I dare you not to be Uplifted listening to it. But by far their best has to be "Lucky Me" an Iconic Sarcastic song full of Aussie Humour that incredibly Catchy. I recall an episode of Musical Quiz Show which featured both Local and International Rock Stars. An American Artist was on that episode with Tania Doko, She sang "Lucky Me ". He was Blown Away and said "Why Haven't I Heard This Song Before?" But our Legendary 60's Pocket Rocket is Judith Durham from The Seekers To Get Ahead they moved to England. "Georgy Girl" is pretty well known around the world. But "A World Of Our Own", "I'll Never Find Another You" and "Morningtown Ride" (which one of My Sisters used as a Lullaby) are pretty great too. In the 90's they regrouped and had one of their Biggest Hits and Unofficial Aussie Anthem "We Are Australian". It sums up how Modern Aussies Treat People, We're generally an Open Friendly People who'll say "Hello!" and talk to Anyone. As Oprah said when She visited Australia "What, Did Everyone Go To Nice School?" Unlike America We don't Label People based on there heritage like African American etc. We're all Just Australians and we like to adopt Honorary Australians as well. Check out the video for "We Are Australian". Judith's voice is so strong Her 3 male band mates had to carefully balance Her vocals out. If She'd wanted to She could have drowned them out. She's a Small Woman with an Incredibly Powerful Voice.
On the subject of great Australian female voices you should check out Baby Animals fronted by Suze DeMarchi. Rush You is a great rock song. Then there is The Divivyls fronted by Chrissie Amphlett. Check out Pleasure & Pain or Boys in Town.
@@jeggification I've thought about suggesting Divinyls before but stun locked myself trying to pick a song to suggest. :) I'd love to suggest "Elsie" live but that might be too much for a first listen. "I'm Jealous" has only crappy quality vids on YT. "Siren" is a great introduction but not a good Female friday song because Bjarne Ohlin sings prominently. So maybe :Boys in Town" or "It's My Life". Any of a dozen songs more radio freadly at that point. :)
@@CurtdWar I really like their version of "I'll make you happy" which would show case a great female fronted band and a song penned by George Young and Stevie Wright from The Easybeats, one of our greatest bands, but as you said, the problem is finding a decent video of the band singing it in their heyday. BTW thumbs up to the earlier suggestion of Batchelor Girl.
The studio video that went with "Don't Speak" is great, because it has parallel dramas: Gwen's ending relationship with the guy in the band, and also how she (from a media perspective) dominated the band, although musically they were balanced. But if a babe like Gwen is the frontwoman, no matter how good a guitarist you are, you get to go stand in the back! Gwen and the band were all great, tight, live performers. You should react to "Just a Girl" live from the MTV beach party. Super high energy.
@@sandral.414 Have details of that breakup ever come out? I mean, I understand not digging into people's private lives, but I have to wonder what in the world would get someone to insist on breaking up with Gwen.

I always liked this song. After releasing five albums, the group went on hiatus in 2001, and Stefani embarked on her solo career, during which she churned out hits like “Hollaback Girl,” “Rich Girl” and “Sweet Escape.” No Doubt reunited in 2012 to release “Push and Shove,” but Stefani chose to focus on motherhood, putting her solo career second ...
Tragic Kingdom (the album this is from) was honestly one of the best albums of the 90's, and as much as it's adored by No Doubt fans, it tends to be overlooked these days when people discuss the 90's. It was huge at the time, and every song on it is killer. I definitely think this is one of the greatest songs to get a real feel for how diverse and powerful Gwen's voice is. Definitely hope you guys check out Spiderwebs and Just a Girl as well, they're equally awesome. I know she'll already know the songs but it would be great to see his reaction to two more amazing songs from the band in that era.
And, of course, Tragic Kingdom is a play on "Magic Kingdom" and is about certain beloved themeparks (including the "Remain seated please Permanecer sentados por favor" you hear on their rides. ;)
Blake Shelton is actually Gwen's 2nd husband! Her first husband was Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. "Don't Speak" is about Gwen's relationship with bass player Tony Kanal. Her solo song "Cool" is about him too. I personally wish that the members of No Doubt would come back together and give us one more great album along the lines of "Tragic Kingdom", "Return Of Saturn", and "Rock Steady"
Push and Shove was a great album, it kinda lost traction because their first video was a bit insensitive to native people. I do have native family members and did not see it as too bad but it just killed the album.
Jewel is a good suggestion, but Natalie Merchant is a great suggestion. "These Are Days," "Jealousy," and "Carnival" are classics from her solo career. "Candy Everybody Wants," and "Because the Night" from her time with 10,000 Maniacs.
Other great No Doubt songs to react to: "Hella Good", "Spiderwebs", "Just A Girl", "It's My LIfe" (cover of the 80's hit by Talk Talk) and "Underneath It All" (Blake's favorite song of Gwen's).
Jordan needs to learn, Gwen is a rock chick! "Spiderwebs," "Just A Girl," "Sunday Morning," "Excuse Me Mister." We need more No Doubt on this channel, let's gooo!!!
@@taoist32 - He also seems to be open to new musical experiences and has been listening to so much music that he’s not familiar with. It’s awesome to follow along. There is SO much music out there.
Tragic Kingdom is one of the all-time greatest albums - and I'm a classic rock fan. Spiderwebs is my favorite No Doubt song. But, Just a Girl and Sunday Morning are great as well. Return to Saturn is also a great album, but it started to get even more away from Ska. Ex-girlfriend is my favorite from that album. I miss No Doubt. In a see of grunge, No Doubt was a breathe of fresh air in the 90s. No Doubt's story is fascinating. If you get the chance, watch No Doubt Behind the Music. I think you can find it on youtube.
From google: This song is about the relationship lead singer Gwen Stefani had with bassist Tony Kanal for seven years. She's saying that what they had was real, and it's a pity it couldn't last - don't bother explaining because it hurts. It didn't work out between Stefani and Kanal, but she didn't give up on musicians. She married Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale in 2002; when they split in 2015, she took up with country star Blake Shelton, her co-star on the singing competition The Voice. >>
I love how they pulled a Fleetwood Mac in that they wrote a lot of their biggest hits based on their personal relationships. 🥰 I also love "Simple Kind Of Life", which I believe is also based on personal situations that were going on in her life at the time. I don't think she gets enough credit for her songwriting. Just amazing.
Gwen was in a relationship with the bass player- and yes.. the spotlight was put on her more than the rest of the band-(as shown in the video) so soon after, No Doubt ended and Gwen wen solo- pretty much my knowledge in a nutshell- 💝💙👍✨
This song is definitely based in reality. Gwen Stefani dated guitarist/bandmate Tony Kanal for 7 years, from 1987-1994 (he is the band-member with the darker skin, and he is British - American). The album “Tragic Kingdom” that this song is from was released in 1995, the year after Gwen and Tony’s break up. Gwen and her brother Eric Stefani, who was a former No Doubt member, wrote the song originally as a love song. The song went through several rewrites and new versions. Gwen modified it into a breakup song about her bandmate and ex-boyfriend Tony Kanal, shortly after he ended their seven-year relationship. Luckily they got past the break up and continued to perform and later collaborate together on some of Gwen‘s solo material, when she decided to go out on her own. ☮️ Steve in Dallas
@@barbarachieppo9603 I drove him a few years back for Uber. He’s very chill & cool. He loves new wave music. He told me his parents are from India, and he was born in London. He told me they came up with the name “No Doubt”, because the former singer, before Gwen, would always would say No Doubt. Then they thought the name was too cheesy, but they already spent $50 of their high school money on stickers, and other promotions with the name, so they decided to keep it, $50 was a lot of money for them back then. Btw, I drove him from a place near the Greek Theater (Los Feliz) to DTLA, where he was going to see a band, with his friend.
Natalie Merchant from 10,000 Maniacs is great! Both with the band and her solo career. I have seen her live so many times. "Wonder" is one of her most popular songs.
@S Ragsdale after I commented I went and watched the video because I hadn't seen it in a long time. I totally thought the same thing! Total celebration of women!
Carnival live with the female lead guitar player is good too. For an obscure song "Gulf of Araby" is amazing! but I think you are right, they want big hits for views, not really the best songs.
@@rustyaxelrod I'm more into rock too, but I'm trying to throw some out there more likely to be played lol. I really like this channel, but lately the music has been 80% sappy. Don't get me wrong, I want them to keep checking out greats from the past, but just want more lively music in there again 🙂
Although I appreciate the Go-Go's, they don't even break the top ten in best selling. They were the first all female band that wrote and played their own songs that charted.
Amber fangirling over Gwen Stefani is adorable... as is Jordan's embarrassment. Stefani and No Doubt had some great songs, and this is by far my fave. This is one that always hits me in the feels. That awful feeling you get when you know you're about to hear something you don't want to, from someone you love. Been there. "Just a Girl' is iconic and needs listening to also. PS - B-A-N-A-N-A-S!!!
""Just a Girl' is iconic and needs listening to also." I'm just a girl in the world......... That's all that you'll let me be God, I love that song. So much anger and just straight up feminine power.
OMG, 'Just a Girl' is practically required listening for a 90s music education! As for a No Doubt reunion, she talked about it with Jimmy Kimmel this spring. There was a huge surge of interest in that for the 25th anniversary of Tragic Kingdom, but it didn't happen. The last time they played together was 2014, and they've been on hiatus since then. She said, 'It's impossible to know the future' about the idea of a 30th anniversary reunion, so who knows?
I loved I'm Just A Girl, Spiderwebs, and Sweet Escape! I also lovvvvved her singing with rapper Eve on Rich Girl, and Let Me Blow Your Mind! Gwen, Alanis and Avril were my 90's babes giving me the rebellious vibes I lovvvvvvved!!! Girls doing it on their terms for sure! :))))
No worries you two...if Jordan hasn't heard anything from some of these artists. It's ok. That's why I enjoy watching y'all discover music that we grew up with!
@@saritobarim31 Yesss!!! That's how I feel everytime a reactor hasn't heard or even heard of really famous songs/artists that I grew up with and loved. Time just keeps flying by, I'm 43 now....Ouch!!
As a child who grew up in the early 00’s you defined my love for Gwen Stafani. I was in love with her and i love the fact that she wasn’t afraid to rock out with the boys and still be “girly”. Even in her solo career she still bought the heat and wasn’t afraid to be a bad ass. Songs like luxurious, cool, and the it’s my life (Sample) defined my whole childhood.
From the same album, they have "Just a Girl" which would be _perfect_ for Female Friday, since it has a lot of feminist themes to it. All my other favorites of theirs were club hits that I'm embarrassed to admit to :)
Jewel is awesome. Her backstory is pretty amazing too. Coming from a small place in Alaska to worldwide fame based on simple yet melodious music is a cool story.
I can’t express how much I love how open you both are to new music and artists. You give the music an honest listen and have no problem embracing different styles. Too many people stick to one genre and can’t recognise talent if it isn’t part of that genre.
You guys still need to check out Loreena McKennitt, she's a Canadian artist who does music with heavy Celtic to Middle Eastern influences, and uses a wide variety of world instruments, including Scottish and Irish pipes, Hurdy Gurdy, harp, pan-flute, and more. Check out songs like "Dante's Prayer", "The Mummer's Dance", "The Highwayman". Really, anything by Loreena is going to be gorgeous.
@@kimhesketh2016 I love that song. But, they should start out with one that showcases her voice. Probably one of the more mainstream ones like All Souls Night or Mummers Dance.
Shes amazingly talented, writer, singer, designer, grounded and family oriented The emotions you hear and see are real because she was hurt and wrote that song when her boyfriend Tony Kanal (bass player) broke up with her. She's my favorite female entertainer ❤
I’ve seen No Doubt 8 times. I got very into Ska in the late 90s. Bush, Blind Melon and No Doubt at the Bradley Center and them at SummerFest, that SummerFest show was great. The nostalgia and the feels. This entire album was amazing. I feel like every song on Tragic Kingdom was on the radio. Man I love this
@@dustinsdesertheirloomgarde5999 They definitely need to check out Bush. I first discovered them when I borrowed a bunch of my older cousin's tapes in the mid 90's, and Sixteen Stone was probably the tape that got the most play for me. As soon as I was able to, I bought the cd for myself and was a fan ever since. Sixteen Stone, Razorblade Suitcase, and even Golden State were all pretty awesome albums, and I feel like people don't really mention Bush that much these days, unless it's to talk about Gavin being an ass. But even so, they were a hell of a band.
I love "Tragic Kingdom". I think it's the climbing vocals and the sound of the band adding to it. It's like hitting the peak only to discover another mountain.
I love No Doubt, and I love Gwen Stefani's music. She's my favorite signer, and always will be. In answer to your question she hasn't sang with No Doubt for years, but she does performs their songs at her concerts, as she wrote many of their songs. I saw her in concert at the Forum in 2016, and she sang both her music as a single artist, and her No Doubt music. Her fans are hoping for a No Doubt reunion one day, with new music, but we also respect that she's having fun making music with her husband right now. She also made a Christmas album a few years back, that I love. 💜💜💜
@MariaFelecity No Doubt never broke up and Gwen is still part of the band so no reunion they just make new music when they feel like it unfortunately not very often
The entire band collaborated on the songwriting. Gwen mostly wrote the lyrics as she didn't play an instument. For the first few albums she wrote many songs with her brother and founder of No Doubt Eric Stefani. Eric left the band to work on "The Simpsons" as an animator. He continued to collaborate with No Doubt after leaving and even contributed to Gwen's solo recordings.
Gwen is still the definitive millennium pop-punk queen to me, IDGAF. I often wish she’d go back to her musical roots. So many bangers across their entire career, but I’d recommend “Trapped In a Box” for the youngest Gwen you’ve ever seen and a taste of their California ska roots, “Excuse Me Mr.” for strong feminine punk rocker Gwen, or “Hella Good” for one of their absolute best and most iconic radio pop-rock songs. For a band that didn’t fall into the whole ‘90s grunge bandwagon, and were therefore kind of overlooked by the media, No Doubt still did FAR better for themselves than nearly any other pop-punk group of their time. And Gwen’s instantly-recognizable voice definitely helped cement her place in pop culture, even before she “sold out” and went full-time pop star. One of my formative bands, and a forever favorite.
Yasssss girl, I love this rant, cuz I feel the same way, and I'm 55! lol My daughter and I loved ND back in the day, loved the Ska music they were putting out! We loved "Trapped In A Box", Oi To The World", and of course, my other fave, "Bath Water". I personally do not feel they've gotten enough credit and recognition for their amazing contribution to music! They were on the charts for a long time!!! I hate to think she "sold out", but rather she was trying to do more crossover music to get more recognition. I know it sucks when artists do that, it sometimes pisses off their fan base. But I think they are pressured behind the scenes to make these crossover moves, even if it sometimes may be unpopular.
@@tigger7466, I don’t blame Gwen at all for growing up and wanting to do new things. I think the fact that she’s still such a popular name goes to show her instincts were on point. The punk scene in particular tends to shit on artists who “make it”, and especially when those artists switch genres (though No Doubt always WAS on the pop side of punk, tbh). But her attitude still seems the same as it ever was, and we stan a gorgeous, confident, and self-aware goddess.
@@mourningwoodward Agree wholeheartedly. Yes, I loved how they straddled the line between Punk & Pop. It helped them appeal to a wider audience! I also loved how they incorporated a lot of Reggae into their songs, especially with "Underneath It all", and "Hey Baby". I still get nostalgic for their music, and watch their videos weekly. I was just watching some just now lol "Cool" gives me those lazy Summer Imaginary Italian BF European vacay vibes. lol 🥰
@Brer247i, you’re right - I meant millennial within the timeframe of No Doubt’s overall musical career (‘90s-‘00s), but I probably could have worded that better. lol
Gwen & Eve "Let me blow your Mind" is off the charts. It's a shame y'all won't react to it. The video that goes with it really shows how 2 strong women with such powerful voices can compliment each other.
Great song, one of the things that caught my ear as a musician, most songs start acoustic and go into electric guitar for heavier parts, this song opens with electric and brings the acoustic to the front during the heavier choruses, and the solo is an acoustic as well, masterful reversal of the old formula. And Gwen's voice is spot on throughout the song.
Gwen is SO amazing. either as No Doubt or Solo. Truly is a queen of music, no matter the genre she sings. Please do Sunday Morning from No Doubt, as well.
Loving her new "Let Me Reintroduce Myself!" Always loved Simple Kind Of Life, Just, a Girl, What are You Waiting For, and Oi to the World! is permanent on my holiday list. Gwen is a great storyteller, full of emotion, energy, and classy sassiness!
Gwen is awesome. Tragic Kingdom is such a great album. "I'm Just a Girl" was the first song I heard her sing because it was on the "Clueless" movie soundtrack back in the 90s. No Doubt was a garage band she started with her brother when she was a teen. The think I love about her most is that she's massively successful, but still completely down-to-earth. She and Blake are my favorite couple in music. The prove that opposites attract!
Incidentally, the bananas song, or “Hollaback Girl” was written as a clap back to Courtney Love of Hole who made a comment in an interview something to the effect of she wasn’t some regular cheerleader like Gwen Stefani. I’m definitely not paraphrasing it correctly, but essentially that was Gwen’s comeback like, I’m not gonna play with your drama and I’m also not “just” some cheerleader… which is why she chose the theme of the song and video.
I just stumbled across your channel. Great reactions! Also, Gwen wrote this song about her then ex boyfriend who is the guitarist in the group. Yeah, he had to play the song as she sang to him how he'd hurt the hell outta her. Kudos to both of them for making it work.
I really like "Spiderwebs" and "Hey You" as well. She's a very talented singer. For some reason this video reminds me of Merril Bainbridge too (although I think Gwen has much more range).
Spiderwebs is such a fantastic song from Tragic Kingdom. I also liked the very introspective Simple Kind of Life from Return of Saturn. Gwen has such talent.
The song was originally written as a love song but after Gwen broke up dating the bass player in the band she re-wrote the lyrics to fit how she was feeling after the breakup. The theme shown in the video was showing how the media was concentrating on Gwen during promotion and ignoring the rest of the band. That was an actual problem in the band and causing tensions.
Fergie's song, Big girls don't cry speaks of the same type of growth many young woman experience at some point, when you realize there are things you need to do on your own, saying goodbye to toxic people and situations you loved still hurts, but it's part of maturing into womanhood.
My daughter introduced me to No Doubt in the 90s and I still listen to the album Tragic Kingdom on a regular basis. Other great songs are “I’m Just a Girl” and Spiderwebs”.
Gwen actually has some very decent songs, and a great voice. I'm not a Pop music lover at all, but I actually like some of her stuff, maybe because she has a very unique sound and style.
I was in my 20’s when this song came out and I instantly fell in love with it. I liked No Doubt but this was another level in their songwriting and Gwen’s vocals have never sounded better. Still a favourite song of mine to this day.
Wow No Doubt has been my favorite band since 1996. So, as a new subscriber who's been raiding your channel for a couple weeks now and LOVING IT this is the video I'm going to comment on. I remember back in high school in '97 talking about Gwen Stefani and getting blank looks and having to explain that, "oh yeah, she's the lead singer of No Doubt. You know? Don't Speak?" Now it's, "Hey my favorite band is No Doubt." And the response is "Who?" And I'm like.... "yeah.... Don't Speak? Um... Gwen Stefani????" And then the response is "Gwen Stefani was in a band???" It's pretty funny. But yeah. This was really cool to see and especially the Don't Speak video because it takes me back to the concert I saw in '97 from the Tragic Kingdom tour. If y'all were to come back to No Doubt and wanted a cool tie in... they covered Talk Talk's It's My Life which I loved your reaction for. It was a cool cover and the music video is fun. Otherwise, yeah. As previous commenters said, Spiderwebs, Just A Girl. Sunday Morning. Hella Good. On the Rock Steady album they do a song with Prince called Waiting Room. It was never a single though. But it's cool and worth a listen.
Used to be my fave band!! My one and only tattoo has a reference to their “tragic kingdom” album which this song is from and the iconic rotting orange. This one song is the one that is very different from the rest of the record which is insanely upbeat with ska/reggae/punk influences wrapped up in this sunshine-y, California pop album. “Just a girl,” “spiderwebs,” “the climb,” “sixteen,” and the whole album is so good. This was their breakout record and it was their 3rd album so I suggest listening to their first two as well, haha. I think my favorite song by them though (it changes haha) is “bath water” from the “return of Saturn” album. So fun and different!! They no longer play together :((( and this song is about her ex boyfriend who is also a band mate, Tony. He is the bass player. They dated a long time but he broke up with her and half of this record is about him, haha but he was fine with that. They stayed friends :) “tragic kingdom” would def classify as a break up album and it was my first vinyl record I ever purchased! Sorry for the novel haha. Keep listening to no doubt!
Their best album was the Rock Steady Album. That was when they explored more sounds to combine with theirs and they also worked with the talented Pharrell. The Rock Steady album really brought them into the spotlight more than ever. I love every song on that album! 😊Gwen Stefani and Pharrell are good friends, and he also helped her on her solo albums as well. I love all of her solo albums. Gwen Stefani is so talented and she is such a kind good person.
She was with Bassist Tony Kanal for 7 years. "Don't Speak" is about that breakup. Check out Gwen & Pink's Collab on "I'm Just a Girl" at the IHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
The orange is because they are from Orange County, California (Anaheim). The song is about her and the bass player having a break-up and is based on what really happened. She was the second singer of No Doubt as the first singer (male) commented suicide.
This song was written about her ending a relationship with the bassist, Tony. We were together for a while. Originally, No Doubt was her brothers band and there were quite a few members in the band which evolved into the line up you see.
This video was actually very much true to life with what the band was going through at the time. Gwen had recently ended her romantic relationship with guitarist Tony Kanal and it was I’m sure difficult to navigate those dynamics. Additionally, like in the video storyline, Gwen was receiving A LOT of attention, both for her beauty and style, as well as her voice. Publicity was very focused on HER, and the rest of the band had growing resentment towards that. There was a lot of love between this band, but the unequal attention made for some very real bad feelings….
I grew up with No doubt. Saw them when they went back on tour in 2009, years after their peak, and I was a little skeptical about how they would sound live. Paramore opened for them too (HOLY SHIT). But No Doubt and Gwen killed it! Gwen was just coming back from having her second child, and jumped around on stage at like 42, for two hours straight. She was amazing live!
She had married Gavin Rossdale from British Band " Bush" and had children with him.....when they broke up, she met Blake Sheldon (he was going thru his own brake up with his wife) doing the show the Voice and after a while the two of them became an item.
Next Song: *Simple Kind of Life* Official video if possible, follows the theme of Don't Speak... obliterates cakes with a bat. Love the bass guitar in that song.
This song was co-written with her brother Eric who was the co-founder of the band (along with original lead singer John Spence). He left the band just before it blew up to become an animator for the Simpsons.
"Don't Speak" is a favourite of mine. I've requested Haley Reinhart collabing with Postmodern Jukebox for her cover of Radiohead's "Creep" - ruclips.net/video/m3lF2qEA2cw/видео.html, but Haley recently did a cover of this song with Postmodern Jukebox - ruclips.net/video/Txi7QuO99kM/видео.html. Would be great if you included her for future Female Friday reactions
Lets not forget that No Doubt was not Gwenn alone. The whole band was amazing! you should definitely react to one of their live performances. But not another ballad... something more rocking or more SKA. Because they started as a SKA band and they kicked butt at it. She is definitely an amazing performer. But I feel that she lost all her "bite" once she went solo. She will never be as relevant as a solo artist as she was with No Doubt. Suggestions: I'm just a girl (live), Sunday Morning (live), Ex Girlfriend (live), New (live), Hey Baby (live) and of course SPIDERWEBS also live.
This album, Tragic Kingdom, is an absolute masterpiece from front to back. Not a bad moment on it.
AMEN!!!!
Agree 💯 percent.
Indeed
Also her solo songs, Cool and Let me blow your mind ft. Eve
Spiderwebs and Hella Good.... for sure!
Great list. Bring it on!
OMG Spiderwebs... that was it for me
Everyone forgetd their cover of the vandals Oi to the World
You guys mentioned how good of a singer she is.
The whole "Tragic Kingdom" album is about her relationship with Tony
@@LilRocker2005 I'd hate to be that guy making a whole album about my breakup with a fellow member. Side question, did they do any other albums? And if so, were they any good/worth listening to?
@@NYC_Goody "Tragic Kingdom" was their 2nd album I believe and it is considered their "Breakout" album. The follow up called "Return of Saturn" was pretty good and the one after that "Rock Steady" also had a couple hits.
Some of the songs I recommend checking out besides "Don't Speak" are "Spiderwebs", "Just A Girl", "Simple Kind of Life", "Hey Baby", "Hella Good", "Underneath It All", and "It's My Life"
Another album in a similar vein to "Tragic Kingdom" is the album "Rumours" by Fleetwood Mac.
You have to do JUST A GIRL now 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Hoo? Never heard of her. What does she do?
@kenperkins7921 lol its a song by no doubt
This ^^^^^^
Heck yes. Excellent vocals and beat ss expected
Yess they should do this
Gwen is known for being singer of No Doubt for almost 20 years, more than ANYTHING else.. and it blows my mind that there are adults that never heard this song no matter what you listen to... it literally feels like you had to come from different planet not to know this lol.
@@mayaamis Yah I agree, I mean their music was literally everywhere, I had nothing to do with budget..seeing as the radio is free...
They wanted to sign Hayley Williams of Paramore as a solo artist but she wouldn’t sign without the rest of the band.
YES!!! Came here to say this 🍊
THANKYOU X
My favorite female from your part of the world is from neighboring New Zealand.
Jenny Skulander in Devilskin.
@@jeggification I've thought about suggesting Divinyls before but stun locked myself trying to pick a song to suggest. :)
I'd love to suggest "Elsie" live but that might be too much for a first listen.
@@chriso6719 Also Renee Brennen from Tadpole, and a bit older theres Jenny Morris and Sharon O'Neil
The bassist broke up with her. She didn't want it to end.

Yes, yes. One of the top 10 albums of the 1990's, along with Blues Traveler's "Four", Prince's "Emancipation" and Nirvana's "Nevermind".
Agreed!
And, of course, Tragic Kingdom is a play on "Magic Kingdom" and is about certain beloved themeparks (including the "Remain seated please
Permanecer sentados por favor" you hear on their rides. ;)
Agreed, ND was killer and Gwen slayed !
Tragic Kingdom was amazing

My favorite No Doubt is "Sunday Morning". So catchy. I'd definitely recommend Jewel and Natalie Merchant
Natalie Merchant - Carnival. On point.
Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs is a must.
Yes, yes, and yes.
Jewel is a good suggestion, but Natalie Merchant is a great suggestion. "These Are Days," "Jealousy," and "Carnival" are classics from her solo career. "Candy Everybody Wants," and "Because the Night" from her time with 10,000 Maniacs.
Natalie has been my secret crush for 30 years. Her stuff with 10,000 Maniacs is golden.👍🏻✌🏼💯
Other great No Doubt songs to react to: "Hella Good", "Spiderwebs", "Just A Girl", "It's My LIfe" (cover of the 80's hit by Talk Talk) and "Underneath It All" (Blake's favorite song of Gwen's).
I think it's hard to find a no doubt song that isn't amazing. I miss them so much. Tragic kingdom is still one of my favourite albums.

Tragic Kingdom is just one of the best albums of the 90s, period.
One of my fav songs ever honestly. This and Cool. Gwen is phenomenal as is the whole band.
From google:
This song is about the relationship lead singer Gwen Stefani had with bassist Tony Kanal for seven years. >>
They were together another 10 years after this song. She didn’t go solo until 2004.
No Doubt was a popular ska band. Tragic Kingdom was a big album

As a child who grew up in the early 00’s you defined my love for Gwen Stafani. I was in love with her and i love the fact that she wasn’t afraid to rock out with the boys and still be “girly”.
100% Spot on!
Try an 80s band, Missing Persons "Words" and "Walking In LA".
Yes!!! I also love Berlin's "No More Words" or "The Metro!"
So glad I saw Gwen in concert because she brought out No Doubt as a surprise guest, I was on top of the moon lol
Gwen's Voice is so underrated, I know good singing and I've experienced it with Gwen!
This is one of the songs that makes me the most emotional for some reason. I almost can't listen to it without feeling pain. But it is a great song.
I love Amber's face when she loses herself in the music! Pure joy! It makes my day every time.
This is, hands down, my fave No Doubt song.
That is unproven gossip, though. Sad to put women against each other.
@@JennRighter Courtney herself confirmed it in an interview, even though Gwen herself hasn’t said anything of it… Courtney believes it to be true
@@JennRighter its true. Gwen said it herself in many interviews
@@JennRighter This type of drama happens between two men, men and women as well as between two women, crying sexism is absurd.
@@rppdfire thank you ! Bout time someone said that
I just stumbled across your channel. Great reactions! Also, Gwen wrote this song about her then ex boyfriend who is the guitarist in the group. Yeah, he had to play the song as she sang to him how he'd hurt the hell outta her. Kudos to both of them for making it work.
Bass.
Bassist, Tony.
Tony was the bass player
This is one of my favourite heartbreaking songs ever
Gotta play him "Just A Girl". Probably the biggest hit they ever had
Lol no it wasn’t. This was their biggest.
Back when she was awesome. Love this band and her early years
I really like "Spiderwebs" and "Hey You" as well.
Yes, it was especially modeled after an actual event, they were posing for a magazine cover and the cover came out and it was just Gwen on it.
Alright, holler, back Girl she's my girl, yeah.😅🎉❤
Fergie's song, Big girls don't cry speaks of the same type of growth many young woman experience at some point, when you realize there are things you need to do on your own, saying goodbye to toxic people and situations you loved still hurts, but it's part of maturing into womanhood.
Was thinking gwen again with fergie and pink on another good Friday.
I just love Gwen Stephani, especially the No Doubt years. She wrote a lot of their music.
I love The Climb! Such an underrated song on Tragic Kingdom. Of course I also love Just A Girl and Spiderwebs.
Gwen had it going on. Still rocks her own style 100%. Much respect to her and your appreciating amazing talent! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Plenty of ppl have already recommended these but definitely "Hella Good", "Just a Girl", and "Spiderwebs" are must-listens when it comes to No Doubt.
She was with Bassist Tony Kanal for 7 years. "Don't Speak" is about that breakup. Check out Gwen & Pink's Collab on "I'm Just a Girl" at the IHeart Radio Music Festival in Las Vegas.
I remember this girl playing a song on MTV, when they played videos. She played backup singer with her brother, No Doubt. She overwhelmed the stage...
No Doubt went HARD back in the 90s. Watch any video of a live show - you’ll see. 🔥🔥🔥
This was a MAJOR hit on MTV when she broke out and into stardom.
The orange is because they are from Orange County, California (Anaheim). The song is about her and the bass player having a break-up and is based on what really happened. She was the second singer of No Doubt as the first singer (male) commented suicide.
I love No Doubt's version of Talk Talk's "It's My Life" Check it out, both versions are great!
This song was written about her ending a relationship with the bassist, Tony. We were together for a while. Originally, No Doubt was her brothers band and there were quite a few members in the band which evolved into the line up you see.
Spiderwebs, the climb, and tragic kingdom are all good songs that showcase her vocals. I was also obsessed with Gwen as a teenager.
Gotta check out "It's My Life" and "Spiderwebs". Then follow up with the original "Its My Life" by Talk Talk. :)
Bush is awesome
I really like the band Bush!
“Spiderwebs” all day long
Next Song: *Simple Kind of Life*
Official video if possible, follows the theme of Don't Speak... obliterates cakes with a bat.
Love the bass guitar in that song.
Bass guitar played by her boyfriend at the time.
That's the song that made me love her.The video 📸 i s so good .
I learned of Haley from watching a season of American Idol years ago. She's awesome!
@@sharonbrady-methvin9722 She is incredibly talented. Never saw her on American Idol. Discovered her much later and happy that I did so
Lets not forget that No Doubt was not Gwenn alone.
I've seen No Doubt 3 times in Hawaii!!! Will always love this band!
The group Garbage would be another good female friday similar to this era.
Yes! "Stupid Girl" would blow their socks off!
Great choice. Only Happy When it Rains or Stupid Girl are two favorites.
I always like Special
