  • In this video I introduce my latest and personal N gauge 'hifimicro' cameo layout. In just 60 x 22xm this small scene evokes both first hand an inherited memories of a simpler time when rural branch lines set the clock in a world before the internet. Come and join me as I share the story of why I built - rather than how. If you'd like to learn a little more, there is, as always more material on my blog (which is updated daily).

    Now that is story telling par excellence. My beginnings in model railroad both start with my dad, both the trains that he and I would often have to wait for at crossings when running errands, which he and I did often, and the H.O. scale set he bought for me when I was young around 11 years old or so if I remember correctly. I love trains of all sizes and eras but the American diesels that were running around in the 80's and early 90's, being tied to those memories of my dad, for me are the alpha and omega of my model railroad galaxy.

    This is your best video yet. Your reflections are spot on. You've reminded me that it is not simply about trains, it is about place, time, and emotion -- the memories of our own life and the lives of others, those we never knew, but whose lives we can imagine. Thank you.

      Thank you - that means a great deal to me… it was a very personal take on the subject, and quite unlike a lot of the other videos in my feed - not that I’m saying I’m unique, but just trying to do things my own way.

    Really nice video James, in every way except .......... Dulas is pronounced Dee Las in Welsh. "U" becomes "ee" in most circumstances. We had a river Dulas in Corris which joined the Dovey / Dyfi.
    You are absolutely right about the area south of Aberystwyth, and would love to have experienced both steam and diesel trains over there.
    Your approach to modelling is refreshing, and is a very easy watch
    Thank you

      Thanks Phil, my two step daughters and Duolingo are doing their best to improve my Welsh, getting there but pronunciation of some of the sounds is still beyond me! Thank you for the kind words too, glad you are enjoying the content.

    Thanks for this video James, to be honest when it first opened memories came flooding back..amazing. Your “waffles” and memories often invoke similar memories for me. So I could listen to you all day😊 I am writing this, albeit on my ❤iPad, watching your video and also some of your other vids again. I’m sitting on the sofa with my dog snoring next to me and the rain pelting down. I am in Australia so my childhood memories are of old country railway stations which, in those days, 50+ yrs ago, were often similar to British ones with dry grass and few trees. Thanks ☺️

      You are very welcome. I am glad you have enjoyed this and other videos of mine, creating them is something of a risk and to receive such warm comments from people I’ve never met very kind. I have visited Australia but never really spent any time getting into the railway history, other than the narrow gauge lines - which were my focus at the time. The feel of the lost country station and the small patient trains that served them could well be universal though. Best wishes!

      One thing I like about the local lines in NSW is how much remains. Plenty of track, buildings, bridges and other pieces. It is now a time, not between the trains, but after the trains. It leaves me wondering about what was.

    How did you light the box? The lighting seems so even and does not seem to cast unrealistic shadows.

      @@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways I found it. It would be interesting to see a wiring video (for those of us with no prior wiring experience)/ How you wire up the track, lights, etc.

    Great video as always thank you for sharing. One question I have is how did you do the grass was it static? And what size lengths? I'm currently up to this stage almost on my little layout.

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways
      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways  4 месяца назад +2

      Yes static grass - various lengths but always starting with a base layer of 2mm. I use a Precision applicator rather than a monster, and the frequent re-fills mean the tone changes as I go... I use Peco-scene fibres on this, winter and dead grasses. Notice the tonal variation between field and embankment and the spots of longer grass... it's all a mix of 'feel' and observation - oh and practice of the craft. Good luck - and thank you.

    • @Tractor3Thrasher
      @Tractor3Thrasher 4 месяца назад

      @@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways I don't currently own a static grass applicator do you have any recommendations? I seen a fairly cheap one on Amazon with some static grass tones included. Thought's?

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways
      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways  4 месяца назад +1

      Don't skimp. The Peco (or WWS equivalent) precision is the one I'd recommend for building up a finish slowly but deliberately. If you're doing larger areas a big one is also useful, I've a Greenscenes Flockit. Grasses, choose muted tones, not bright greens... Pecoscene or WWS are great, there are some good Mininatur shades and Greenscenes do some.

      I’m sure you can find others who offer that sort of thing, I hope my channel is more thoughtful and about the art rather than craft. Some of my methods are described on the blog, certainly worth a look, and I do describe specific techniques from time to time - hope that helps.

      I’m probably not the best place to start… I began modelling 35+ years ago… my only advice would be to take things one stage at a time and don’t be afraid to fail - it’s the only way we learn.
