Railfan Reflections - Down on Beaverbrook HO Scale Shelf Layout
Join me to witness 4769, a CN GP38-2W, switching on Beaverbrook. We were late starting due to a stop at Tim Hortons for coffee, but it was great to spend time with the railway and good company. Thanks Chris.

Polish 009 Narrow Gauge Cameo Layout - Introducing Mchowisko
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.16 часов назад
I've built another small cameo box layout using the IKEA Mosslanda shelf. This time in 4mm/ft (1:76) scale - inspired by the 600mm narrow gauge lines serving sugar beet fields in Poland. I have never visited Poland, I don't have much reference material - this model is built with love, but not much first hand experience. In the video I introduce the scene and discuss some of the thoughts I had o...
Explosive Interlude - Mindful escape on N gauge shelf layout

A snatched moment of operation on Paxton Road, a mindful escape for just a few moments. Join me for a short shunting session on my N gauge Hi-fi micro cameo layout. We're shunting an explosives trip freight with brake van (Farish) as it's propelled from the junction. VEA (Sonic models) for the load and a VAA/VBA (Farish/TPM) for the barriers. Motive power provided by 08791 (Farish). More, as us...
Mis-matched pair - Switching on Beaverbrook HO Scale Shelf Layout
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.14 дней назад
I've never thought it was possible to 'fit' a pair of locomotives on an active operating session - but a quick check showed a pair of Switchers would work. My MLW S13u (from 'Just Four') was mechanically a bit rough - but by stripping out the worms, a few gears in the trucks and disconnecting the motor from the decoder I now have an easy way to consist two Switchers on the layout!
Howling Sou'wester - GP9RM switching Beaverbrook - HO Scale Shelf Layout
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.28 дней назад
The Halifax South Western GP9RM is known by local railfans as the 'Howling Sou'wester' for the wonderful tone of its Nathan K3L horn. Seen here switching the local on Beaverbrook, my HO scale shelf layout. The GP9RM is built from an old resin Kaslo Shops kit on an even older Proto2000 GP20 chassis (hence the different fuel and air tanks). The Halifax South Western is part of my proto-freelance ...
For the love of model railways - creating a miniature Class 97
Просмотров 932Месяц назад
I love model railways. They tell out stories, share our emotions and connect us with one another in a way that feels comfortable, gentle and easy. This model was created because of the experience of seeing the real locomotive working hard on Talerddig bank. Of my hand, small in size but big in heart - isn't this the greatest hobby in the world?

Nice Scenery real good Treat
lovely video, and I just bought the book....I think you have a great approach to the hobby, very insightful, and inspirational. Thanks.
Thank you, that’s very kind I hope you enjoy the book.
I love your books James, thanks for making them.
I’m glad you enjoy them! Another pair due this year!
Madness....yep...looks good ...he'll yes
This was just a first try, the revised file is off for laser cutting and should be an even better fit.
Very nice! If you don't mind giving me a reply, I noticed the beautiful painting jobs on your figures. Do you have a certian method if you paint them yourself? They look so lifelike.👌👍
Thank you, they’re painted in Games Workshop acrylics and then given a gentle wash.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Cool, I'll make a note of that. I've always wanted my figures to have that realistic clothing colors to them. Commercial figures that come painted look to artifical. Thanks for the tip. God Bless, happy modeling. Your layout is awsome! Realistic simplicity! I'm building a simular ho switching layout. Point to point, a fictional 12 mile industrial branch, independently owned and operated, by a private rail contracter company. It fictionaly connects via junction to the MKT (Katy), set loosly in the era of 1970's. Company West & Katy Branch - Railco Division- Railroad Inc.. Located in the fictional rural Oklahoma town of Ink Falls. The layout is total freelance with prototype inspiration.👍
Sounds great!
very inspiring layout and presentation, James. Love your videos, keep them coming.
Thanks Roger, will do!
Great composition James, the bicycle is just perfect. It is the sort of desolate landscape, in which a couple of standing stones or a distant barrow on the skyline would hint at earlier times and people lost from the landscape. The bleakness would be almost palpable.
Thank you Peter, glad it struck a chord with you!
Love the weathering of your stock and the layout in general.
Thank you Paul, that’s very kind. Mostly just washes and detail painting. Dusted with airbrush to soften the effects… consistent palette of Humbrol enamels throughout.
Very nice, amazing how much atmosphere you can get into such a small space! One small thing though, the bike should be leaning against the tree, not the sign - Poles wouldn't chain a bike to state property...
Thank you - and for the fantastic reflection on character!! Perhaps it isn’t chained? 😉 for artistic reasons I might leave it on the sign, against the tree it will be visually lost.
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support I need feedback on my train videos thank you
Thank you
This video is perfect, the realism achieved and the narration make me feel standing next to the track 👋👋👋👋👋👋
Thank you - very much the intent.
The paint jobs on te figures is amazingly realistic! Are they from Mini Prints? I just received a crew set from them and can’t wait to get cracking on painting them! Great video as always! Thanks for sharing.
The figures are all from Modelu, thanks for the kind words.
Awesome close ups looking through the freight Cars James. Regards Bernie
Thanks Bernie! Yes, I enjoy those views when operating.
As allways nice to watch. Here a small Tip for a "smother" (final) shunting (step). I Programmed one Button to do the coupling waltz without doing the waltz. Basicly just one direction with the Button pushed gives a movement at lowest speed for one Second. The result is a bit like in reality. Shuter drives in front of the freight wagon, stops, driver (or co driver/shunting personal) gets off, shuter pushes till the point were the two buffers are together and the coupling can be done. If correct progammed (CV) even in smalles speed setting you will get a smooth final step (a ramp in speed). It takes a bit of "training" to reach the point were to stop befor pressing the button. It realy worth it as an eyecatcher.
Sounds too much like programming to me! I’ll stick with playing about with things I just about understand. Thanks for the tip though. This model uses an old Soundtraxx decoder which aren’t as smooth as the Loksound in some of my other models. Certainly in terms of doing a move like you suggest.
I love it! How connected we all are! I can't wait for the next time I have space to build a spot for the boxcar that came from you to ride behind one of my MLWs. Cheers!
Thanks Andrew! That TerraTransport car has gone the furthest of any of my interchanges!
Great videography, models and thoughtful commentary too. Tell me, are the long row of grey buildings 3D printed and a work in progress? They really add weight and emphasis to the scene 👍😊
Thank you. The structure you mention STILL isn’t painted - just primed. The model is scratch built in various styrene parts that slot together. 3D printing is fine for small parts but I wouldn’t trust it to stay straight (gosh even styrene doesn’t!)
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Hi James, sorry I meant to write that the way you did (I thought it must be scratch built not a large 3DP job). It looks impressive though, really adds to the whole scene 👍👍✌️✌️😊😊 I've had some styrene disasters - mainly when a trusted supplier has changed the formula to their solvent - can be heartbreaking/frustrating 💔😲🙄😀
Avoid solvents in styrene structures - I use superglue!
Wonderful commentary, James. Thoughtful as usual. The glimpse of the passing orange cab between cars is very evocative of railfanning in a CN yard. Very nice weathering on the loco. I have to acknowledge that these units, their standard-cab siblings and GP40-2W cousins are destined to have a longer service on CN than my beloved SW1200RSs. Yet, in time, they will be retired as well. Never take for granted a 50-year-old unit if you see it today.
The same feeling as seeing a veteran Class 37 on British rails… seeing a pair on revenue freight before Christmas was absolutely magic!
Awesome channel great video keep them up make sure you like and subscribe thank you for your support I need feedback on my train videos thank you
I’ve always loved the Terra Transport logo. Looks good on em.
Thanks, there is a full back story to my TerraTransport adoption on the blog.
Looks like a railway version of Waiting for Godot 😁
I’m not familiar with the play, but Wikipedia has given me a rough plot! Every day is a school day!
Brilliant! Simplicty achieved. The bicycle is a wonderful touch.
Thank you, yes, simple. Hopefully a sense of space, as well as place too…
Perfekt once again very inspiering 😊👍
Thank you, that’s very kind!
Wow narrow guage looks incredible, love the detail and story telling. Will checkout some older videos for other 009 videos. Now off to get a 009 starter kit!
I’ve a few 009 videos over the years, but currently only have Creech Barn really, to run the smaller locomotives.
That is charmingly atmospheric, beautifully done. With your models its always a challenge to tell the scale etc, thats a knack well acquired by you👍😉✌️ I often add an item or two, e.g. a door left open so as imply human activity. On one of my dioramas I have the classic red and yellow (muted tones) oil drum next to some rusted drums, leaning up against such? An ex WWII gas mask bag used, upcycled (in modern parlance) as a lunch bag by the shunter, whos just nipped off for a jimmy riddle. As you're aware, landscape painters use the "warning colours" to draw the human eye, into, through, or around the painting. Those colours are hardwired into our brains, used sparingly, on a model, they have the same effect as used by landscape painters.
Thanks - yes red and yellow details. I always try to use them sparingly yet as you say, as visual guides. This is the sort of thing discussed in both of my first books.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways My guidance comes from my old art master and the likes of Martyn Welch. You have the deft, subtle touch required to get the desired effect 😊👍💜
What locomotive is that?
The model is a Worsley Works scratch aid kit if the Polish Lyd2 - which were built by Faur in Romania.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Thank you. I'll have to look into getting one of them
Love this, feels other worldly which I like.
Thanks, a place unfamiliar.
Nice
Thank you Bernice.
Such a simple design. Love it!
Thank you Jeff, created because I wanted to create. No grand plans… the track especially an experiment for future, larger layouts. As a whole though, a lovely thing none the less.
Love the Polish narrow gauge. You've done a great piece of work there, although I'm not so sure about the composition as I find the middle tree sits to close to the center and doesn't follow the rule of thirds. Captures everything very well though. Not sure I could think of anything to add, as these lines tend to be deep in forest or out in what we would call a fen. Who made the loco?
Thanks, in 55cm the whole thing is much smaller than you think. Thirds didn’t work, I did try moving it both left and right, it just felt unbalanced. Lyd2 is a Worsley Works kit I built on a custom chassis.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways you've done a great job with it, I will look up their website. I've always fancied an Lxd2, probably a bit big for your layout! 😆
Perfection.
Thanks James, turned out well I think.
I used to have a shunting puzzle layout and very tempted to build another for the play, sorry, operational value
Go for it Paul, if you have the space. I don’t like puzzles just preferring to operate as I feel - but I know many enjoy them.
Thanks for sharing your creative space and where the magic happens James. Just spent the weekend cleaning up my little vintage desk for a year of mindful creativity as I start this great hobby. First order some N scale vintage Mini-trix trains in their original perspex boxes for a project idea and Tamiya paints from the hobby shop. Love the channel and down to earth energy. Some beautiful work!
Hello Hadyn, glad you’re enjoying it. Not sure where you are in the world but my books are on sale in the UK from good bookshops (who do send overseas) if you fancy picking something up to read, and the blog is updated daily.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Thank you will take a look
Just picked up a box of old vintage and dusty Tri-ang rolling stock and TRIANG R152 BR GREEN 0-6-0 CLASS 08 DIESEL SHUNTER in a secondhand shop for $40 so had to pick them up. They have memories of playing trains with my Dad and trying to get my set to run nicely some 20 plus years ago. So I will clean them up and be part of a new collecting series. Now to find some matching catalogues to go with them. Not the most detailed or fancy but beautiful in their simplicity, Even if the shunter does not run its design is brilliant.
However it works for you, the connection is brilliant.
How do you make your photo backdrops? They’re always perfect.
This is just an off the shelf one - modified by spraying white primer over it. I wrote about it on my website. Go and take a look - the search should held ‘fading backdrops’ or something like that.
I quite like this camera angle showing the whole layout, fascia and all. Gives a bit more context to it!
I guess it shows just how small the layout really is! Truly everyone has space for a meaningful model railway.
Cracking stuff. Is the layout 2mm Fine Scale? 🤔👍
No, just British N gauge.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways The track etc looks very fine🤔👍💜
A Mustard Gas pick up from ICI Rhydymwyn nr. Mold? Great running session. Just being cheeky adding a back story.
Perhaps something more Scottish I’d suggest with the Haymarket allocated 08!
Nice Video I do love your small layouts brilliant. They used to have a Explosives factory in South Wales and my Dad was one of the Shunters he used to dread shunting them wagons.
I can imagine! I doubt a barrier wagon would do much if it went off!
Gorgeous!
Thank you!
Great details
Thanks!
Very entertaining. Moves really worked out well double heading. A bit tight, but that makes the story interesting.
Yes, it’s also made me realise I could potentially try an SD40 or SD9 at some point!
Well said.
Thank you Scott.
I have run sound locos for nearly 20 years and the sound quality has improved in leaps and bounds, but at this point in time , I seem to enjoy really good smooth slow running especially on small wheel base locos fitted with stay alive as much .There are some outstanding sound fitted locos out there, such as SLW and Zimo which are real headturners, I modelled Canadian Pacific/CN /BCR for awhile some fitted with TCS WOW sound and they are outstanding and still are but I am a bit more balanced now …..not everything I purchase has to have sound anymore….I ramble on, but thanks for your honest updated review.
Thanks Brian. I think I’d probably have the same opinion now, even several further years on.
Incredible work James, I live in Dieppe and immediately recognized Beaverbrook. I was even considering modeling it myself. Well done.
Thanks Scott! That means a great deal. Plenty more on here, and my website.
I’m assuming by disconnecting the motor from the decoder you’re retaining lights and sound functions?
Hi Paul, yes, although in this case 8704 doesn’t have lights fitted.
Nice video...I installed 2 Digitrak decoders in a couple of Blue Boxes. A SW1500 and a SD9. Followed the instructions on a few RUclips videos. GO YOU 'R's!!!
Great stuff
Glad it's working out well as a dummy unit, it looks fantastic. Food for thought: you may want to consider running these together with the cabs both facing out. There's a bunch of short lines that run these end cab pairs in that orientation, for the best visibility from each cab. Plenty of examples of them running "elephant style" as you did in this video though too. There's definitely no wrong way to do it. 🙂
Paul I had considered the orientation but prefer this side of both units! perhaps next time!
Wow!! Some of the best shots I've ever seen. Great job!!
Thanks Scot, hope you enjoyed the video.
What colours did/ do you use for CN paint? It looks great
They were home mixed to give the faded colours I saw in photos.
That was weird timing! You, and several American prototype RUclipsrs, have just sent me down a new rabbit hole, as if I didn't have too many railway interests already! I'm waiting for the postman to deliver a sound fitted Bachmann GP40 and an Athearn dummy. Plus some freight cars. I'm now wondering if I need to try to find some cheap way to add sound to the dummy, and if I could do it without spending many times what I paid for the dummy on a decoder!
If it’s an Athearn dummy it will have plastic wheels. You could pop a speaker inside and add ‘jump’ leads to the speaker output of the sound model… Rail-Exclusive do a series of small sugar cubes in the Uk which work well for the money.
And this composition, right here at 7:41 is something I wish I had photographed. I love the composition.
I try to choreograph the video as a series of railfan photographs… it’s how I enjoy the layout anyway and it’s nice to see it ‘on the big screen’.
