HO Scale Shelf Layout - Operating kit built RS23...
Come and visit Beaverbrook with me as I operate my latest kit build, the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) RS23 - a bit of a Canadian speciality, wonderfully recreated in HO scale as a multimedia model with 3D print, laser cut and etched components. She runs wonderfully smoothly on a much modified Bachmann DCC Sound Value Alco S2 chassis... more, as usual, on the blog - if you're interested to learn more about the layout or the model itself, use the search box and you should find plenty.

we enjoyed watching the operation of the layout. went back twice during the day and both times was operating with different stock.very entertaining.
Great to see Shelfie 4 operating, PMP certainly thinks his layouts out very thoroughly to produce cracking layouts and this one is no exception, well done James for live streaming it. I wonder how many people will be swayed to produce something from Canada/US from seeing Shelfie 4?
Have you seen the shelf layout by”Boomer Diorama”? British Columbia based. Very different, but a high level of art and craft, both. Highly Recommended! ❤
Very familiar Chris, a very approachable and friendly style as well.
Thanks Michael, it has been good fun playing with Paul’s layout today. We did operate my stock for a few hours too - we’ll do it all again tomorrow!
I am also about to start rail, & sleeper painting. I will very interested to see how you do the settled sleepers. I have used heavily varnished cardboard up to sleeper ends before ballasting.
Sanding sealer is an alternative to varnish. The cork was dimensionally correct and more importantly readily to hand! I think it will work well as a basic yard surface too…
...Clever!
Thank you
I really like the composition of this scene at 7:14. The sight of threading in behind the offspot cars has a really nice feeling of work as a process and not and end state. (That the carloads are evidence of work; that the representation of motion can be portrayed as much in the appearance of things moving but also in static elements that are paused or caught in a state between their origin and destination)
Thanks Chris, I enjoyed making this one immensely. Beaverbrook is a great place to rail fan, new angles, new ideas present themselves almost by accident, inviting us to engage with the models in new ways.
I've been a subscriber for a while and somehow missed this video. I grew up in Halifax and was wondering where you got the idea for the HSWR locomotive. I also know Drumheller quite well as I currently live a few hours north of there. I'm also a bit guilty of "accumulating" . It started out with CP rail and expanded to Ontario Northland which I have yet to do anything with. Now i find myself creating a small German brewery layout in N-scale. Cheers. Stew
Hi Stew, glad you’re enjoying the back catalog! Thank you!
done a few DG's some time ago, fiddly, having a stressful job, and homelife at the moment, my escape, is to disappear into the workshop and make models, put some gentle music on and model away
Yes Gary, escaping not to get lost, but to find yourself once more… hope it helps.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways yes, and i might need to make some more DG's for my next project
A great looking Switcher, also very atmospheric vid of the shunting ops. Thanks keep them coming.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, certainly will!
Hello James, wonderful video. Seeing you looking back me all of a sudden caught me by surprise! I am planning on building my own version of Beaverbrook, how much space is there between the track and the background?
Thanks Thomas, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I thought that in looking out shot might be fun, I couldn’t get the camera to focus on the stock though, not enough depth… it’s between 9 - 14” I think, the whole width. probably 4-5” down the back. The layout is shaped deliberately to work over the printer and shelving below.
That really is a fine looking loco and glimpses through the open grilles from the lineside viewpoint add to the authenticity. Bachmann did a great job on those budget sound locos and maybe not right for the RS23 but a good sound whilst switching nonetheless.
Thank you Barney. Yes they’re a steal when you find them cheap, this one was very well priced.
Great loco was just looking at this on your blog. Sounds great as well even if it isn’t the exact profile. Look forward to seeing more of this.
Thank you Andy, I’ll do a studio shoot on the blog once I finish the weathering.
What makes this superb, is the excellent slow speed performance of this loco, and the light weathering of the cars. No herky jerk, no sheen, and the relaxed sounds of the loco lend to the credibility of the situation and its slow motion ballet. With the bright lighting, I wasn’t watching this at night in November. I was in there in a small town in the summer.
Being transported somewhere else is exactly the point of building and operating our model railways! Thank you!
Nice to see a relaxed construction of couplers. Unlike My efforts. Your planned Industrial exchange sounds interesting.
Thanks, must get back to that one day!
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways the compendium as arrived. Thank you.
Thanks James, I've enjoyed watching and listening to this video. I really must get on and build some DGs for my N gauge stock, the small layout I built a while back already has magnets so I'll be able to operate it properly. While my locos and coaches are all RTR, I decided some years ago to kit build the wagons, as it's what I enjoy doing most....
Thank you Simon, I’m glad you enjoyed the video and good luck with the couplings too!
Kraftwerk - to create. Wehrmacht - war destruction. Craft the magic of creativity. Journey on the railway of Life. Great video, thanks.
Thank you
Where did you get that locomotive 0:43
It is a Bachmann GE 45t switcher I recently acquired second hand via Facebook marketplace.
Really looking forward to see this one developing here and on your blog.
Thanks, me too! Loads to experiment with this time for that autumnal New England look!
I just noticed that Humbrol 72 is available from stockists on eBay.
Hi there, not in the UK as far as I can tell, it’s been discontinued for a few years these days.
Have you tried revell 89?
I’ve tried Revell paints in the past and found they did funny things when thinned, but perhaps it’s time to revisit as I was aware there was an equivalent in their enamel range…
Oh... I had a question.... have you ever considered hand-laying track with an assortment of differently stained sleepers instead of using commercial track and painting the sleepers?
No, it’s funny but that has never appealed. I don’t think natural materials scale that well in the smaller indoor scales. That said others get a great deal of pleasure from it.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways I prefer commercial track for the ease of use, but commercial track adds up fast nowadays, especially when you switch from an 8-foot shelf to a 10x20 foot room. Finding the "work smarter no harder" is a challenge.
Thank you for this video. It's very soothing to this American after the events of Tuesday. ❤ I have an 8yo Anatolian Shepherd. A 130-pound (8 and 2/3rd stone) dog with an independent streak. When he was a puppy, he'd lick the walls by wherever he slept. Thus, there's damaged walls in the laundry room, living room, and hallway outside my parents' bedroom. So, is Echo trouble? Yeah, but I love him with every fiber of my being. My "channel" if you can call it that, consists of early videos of him, if you are curious.
Thank you, not the greatest of cinematography today, I’m afraid I’m too tired to set up anything better - but glad that the message soothed and helped. Your Echo sounds quite the character, we’ve a 9 year old Dachshund here who was bought for the girls but has ended up being pretty much my dog, she is lovely. Not enjoying the Labrador puppy either though!
Very nice, & relaxed view of the layout. Thanks for some really useful modelling advice.
Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
I am new to your channel and I have to say I love this layout. I really love the track work! I am getting back into model railroading after a very long absence due to not having the space but next June I will have a brand new house with a big unfinished basement. I will lots of room! I am looking at a lot of layouts to get some ideas of what do I really want on my layout. This layout definitely inspires me as I do want more of a heavy industry switching layout. Side-note I really love the slow movements during the switching.
Thank you, I would suggest that you take a good read through my website and perhaps consider my book ‘Small Layout Design’ - just because you have a big space doesn’t mean you need to fill it. A smaller layout is more achievable and as you can see can still entertain - Beaverbrook continues to delight after years of switching just 2 turnouts!
I have a (video) request. you use the BS-Tracks... can you do me one and check the Switches for me. I have the Problem that with my current Track setup my Switching Loco (2 axle) and wagons (2 axle) stuck in the the hole of the heart right in the middle of the switch (wich leads to derailement and shortcut). It gets worse when pushed (while switching) on slow speed 😢. I want to try brittish finescale but another point of view would be nice 😅
Checked Peco by the way... same problem with the bumpy ride in the heartpeace
Sounds like it is the locomotive? In N I use British Finescale, and have nothing to compare with. In HO/OO I use exclusively Peco and generally have no problems.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Hm.. maybe i make a video of my Problem. I d k. It is hard to describe :-)
Sorry mate, you really need to turn down the train volume so that we can understand what you're saying!
Feedback gratefully received, it’s not always a problem but sorry if it has caused issues this evening.
@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways no worries, it's a common thing since most cameras are going to flatten out the sound. You have a really nice voice, what little I could hear of it over the train!
It’s funny because on my devices it is, on the whole, completely audible! Again, sincere apologies, it’s no use sharing with others if people can’t enjoy it!
Couldn’t catch you live on Friday just watched it now, another great session. Planning my own switching layout, tracks on order, can’t wait to have it up and running, there’s nothing like chilling out while pushing a few cars around. I’m heading to Warneley on the Sunday so I’ll say hi if I see you.
Nice loco, not commonly seen on layouts.
Indeed, I love creating these models from the Kaslo kits.
Super layout. Nice steady camerawork, great angles -a visual delight. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Hi Michael, very kind, thank you. A variety of other videos feature this layout, as well as some ‘live’ operating videos. Thanks for watching.
It's like you're there. Superb model. Superb camera work.
Thank you Mike, seeing it on my TV it’s hard to believe how tiny it really is! Only 55cm long.
what couplings are they?
Hi Tim, they are DG couplings. They’re made from an etched coupling that is folded to shape and a wire loop that is formed on a template. If required a steel wire tail is added to the loop to make them magnetic. The tongue in the etched part lifts up and down to provide a delayed action uncoupling. Great, and not difficult to set up.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways oh ok wow thanks for the info on them
Love this, James. Fantastic detail and atmosphere.
Thank you, it certainly sums up the prototype.
Excellent in its simplicity!
Erik thank you, indeed, distilled - the prototype is simple enough but I think I’ve captured more than just the physical resemblance - more the character too… I hope.
That's superb James! I'm in layout planning mode at the minute and your channel and blog is proving huge inspiration
Hello Dave, thanks for the message, if you’d like any help my Layout Design process starts from £180. You can contact me through the blog. Either way, good luck!
Hola James, la Micro maqueta es muy bonita! Qué vía has usado? Me pareció H0 Un saludo desde España!!
Hello there, this is modelled in N gauge using ‘British Finescale’ code 40 flat bottom rail concrete sleepered track.
Ooh. That’s a lovely camera angle as the loco crosses the road into the transload siding
Thanks Ian!
I'm sad I missed this live by 2 minutes...
Hi Andrew - hope you're well... It's still worth watching the recording - and hopefully a nice way to spend half an hour.
I bought the Mersey rail version that Rails of sheffield were selling earlier this year. I have no idea why? 🤷 as its neither the area or location im modelling? I just like them. Only ever travelled on on once. I'm from the south east so never saw them. The Leyland National busses though were everywhere. Buy I can't deny they have a charm which has been set off by a fantastic diorama. I absolutely love the channel and am looking forward to compendium number two being released. 😊
Thanks Steve - I hope yours runs as well as mine. I do think the Northern Spirit livery hides the worst errors, with its lack of horizontal livery elements on the body side (to judge window position) and the black paint on the tumblehome hides the compromised angle! Thank you for the kind words too - Compendium2 orders now closed, invoices being paid (thanks to all) and will be ordered once they are all in...
How to turn 'nothing happening' on a layout into an art form!!😁😁👍 I do mean that as a compliment!
Thank you, glad it resonated.
If I could only keep one of my RUclips subscriptions, I would choose this one. Marvellous again.
Robert, thank you! That is very very kind!
Nice little model, I have been tempted in the past
I’d say you won’t be disappointed!
Cracking video ..
Thank you!
That works and very well! I love the collage of ambient sound and your always superb modelmaking. There’s a richness here worth noticing.
Thanks Chris, layers indeed… the modelling, the audio, the video, the editing… all with love for this great hobby and railways in general.
Would prefer differing camera angles to bring out the different elements of the layout, particularly the grain silo area at the bottom.
You'll find that in some of the other 'Live' videos - these have been an evolution. I've also done some 'traditional' operational videos too, if you would prefer to loose the commentary!
Great layout! When the fiddlestick support is fully out, how far does it still remain under the display case? And how is it supported underneath when packed away? Great work as always
Hi David - I hope you've seen the finished layout either on the channel here, or in print (my books or BRM). The fiddle stick support slides into a slot 'under' the baseboard - the weight of the layout stops it wanting to tip up when pulled out. If you lift the layout though, the fiddle stick drops out. The layout is 55cm total, so I guess it's probably 15cm or so still under the layout when pulled out. On a more recent commission (Fancy Another Beer - take a look here on the channel) I did a more 'captive' solution where the stick was held in place by a lower lip - and also used a layer of ply in it's construction to add strength. MDF is easy, but anything over about 30cm would be too long to avoid sagging.
@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Hi James Thanks for the reply. I do have all of your books, am currently going through them for inspiration. I am looking for a fiddlestick design thats easy to use like yours and can work without it resting on the surface of the table, meaning the inlet/outlet can be higher up.
I think the most realistic looking figure I've seen. Fantastic layout! Happy I found your channel.
Thank you - the figures are from Modelu here in the UK
Nice video, really like it. Nicely detailed figurine on the plate as well, what make is it? Thank you, keep those opps coming 😍
Hi there - thank you - the figures are by Modelu, 3D scans of real people. They are 3D printed in whatever scale you want, no connection other than satisfied customer - although I did help with development so had a number of these supplied free as a thank you. www.modelu3d.co.uk/product-category/north-american/
Hi James, great video. Which couplings do you use?
Thank you, these are DG couplings. When they work they’re a magnetic uncoupling with delay. Wonderful things and not too fiddly to assemble. I’ve got a video on the channel in the workbench playlist about making them.
I always forget Paxton Rd is N until your hand comes into shot. The modelling and amosphere is first rate.
Thanks Evan, that’s very kind.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Nice!
Thanks!
Nice layout...can you tell me the dimensions of your road (L W) and material used...
The road? It’s made from 1mm thick Daler mounting card. There are more details if you take a search on my website/blog.
The material is Daler mounting card, 1mm thick, there is more on my website/blog. Thanks!
