- Come and visit Beaverbrook with me as I operate my latest kit build, the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) RS23 - a bit of a Canadian speciality, wonderfully recreated in HO scale as a multimedia model with 3D print, laser cut and etched components. She runs wonderfully smoothly on a much modified Bachmann DCC Sound Value Alco S2 chassis... more, as usual, on the blog - if you're interested to learn more about the layout or the model itself, use the search box and you should find plenty.

Hi James I love these end to end shelf switching layouts. I have one myself and get many happy hour of quality time using it for switching operations.
Thanks Roger! Whole heartedly agree!
That is a fine looking RS-23! When I first saw the black patch on the hood and white stencilled letters I thought it was the Windsor & Hantsport Railway! I model that shortline, have RS-23 #8034, and am building five more units. Kaslo kits.
Yes, inspired by the Windsor and Hantsport ones… but HMLX is Hilton Mears leasing…
I really like the composition of this scene at 7:14. The sight of threading in behind the offspot cars has a really nice feeling of work as a process and not and end state. (That the carloads are evidence of work; that the representation of motion can be portrayed as much in the appearance of things moving but also in static elements that are paused or caught in a state between their origin and destination)
Thanks Chris, I enjoyed making this one immensely. Beaverbrook is a great place to rail fan, new angles, new ideas present themselves almost by accident, inviting us to engage with the models in new ways.
What makes this superb, is the excellent slow speed performance of this loco, and the light weathering of the cars. No herky jerk, no sheen, and the relaxed sounds of the loco lend to the credibility of the situation and its slow motion ballet.
With the bright lighting, I wasn’t watching this at night in November. I was in there in a small town in the summer.
Being transported somewhere else is exactly the point of building and operating our model railways! Thank you!
That really is a fine looking loco and glimpses through the open grilles from the lineside viewpoint add to the authenticity.
Bachmann did a great job on those budget sound locos and maybe not right for the RS23 but a good sound whilst switching nonetheless.
Thank you Barney. Yes they’re a steal when you find them cheap, this one was very well priced.
A great looking Switcher, also very atmospheric vid of the shunting ops. Thanks keep them coming.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, certainly will!
Great loco was just looking at this on your blog. Sounds great as well even if it isn’t the exact profile. Look forward to seeing more of this.
Thank you Andy, I’ll do a studio shoot on the blog once I finish the weathering.
Jeez. Wish I could just straight-up buy one. I'm more of a scenery modeler than a rolling stock crafter.
Well that would make this one no less valuable. I do appreciate the desire for box opening modelling, but there is something special about building yourself something not available.
Hello James, wonderful video. Seeing you looking back me all of a sudden caught me by surprise! I am planning on building my own version of Beaverbrook, how much space is there between the track and the background?
Thanks Thomas, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I thought that in looking out shot might be fun, I couldn’t get the camera to focus on the stock though, not enough depth… it’s between 9 - 14” I think, the whole width. probably 4-5”
down the back. The layout is shaped deliberately to work over the printer and shelving below.
