As someone who’s transloaded millions of gallons of fuel from truck to tank car, I love every bit of this. When we were in a spot for a while, we would have a POD set and use it as an office for the pumps and hoses. So that’s a real world solution that could be modeled. Love the opening scene!! Great modeling great work.
Because of modellers (shelf) like you, I've become really interested in shelf modeling in addition to my greater interest in a cityscape/NYC based subway layout and passenger (Amtrak) rail with the usual mix of freight train operations, a small detached shelf layout like this is the way to go. Your weathering is spectacular and your scenery skills and attention to detail are fantastic. That building behind the two tank cars is on point and I just love the detail of it like the AC units on the roof. Tons of things to be inspired by on your layout!
Those hoses are AWESOME! Very realistic, and the bronze wire inside is ingenious. When you go to secure the excavator to the low boy trailer, take a look at prototype photos. I've seen modelers simply connect the chains from the eyelets/tie downs on the trailer directly to the item being secured. It doesn't work that way...you need a chain binder to take up the slack and tighten the chain to properly secure the load. Don't forget the 'OVERSIZE LOAD' banners on the front bumper of the tractor and on the back of the trailer, too! Keep up the great work, I'm in training at UAL in DEN through the end of November so I'll be looking forward to your updates to give my noodle a rest from all the studying!
Hi John , I always enjoy your updates and builds . Your attention to detail is finely executed . I always spot something new I missed before in the videos . You're another channel in the modeling community that should have more followers . Look forward to layout extension.
Lots of great stuff once again, love the piping idea. Your layout is really impressive, especially for it size, I looks way bigger. Thanks for sharing.
You have such an amazingly detailed little layout. Your weathering techniques are superb. Maybe one thing you could do since you have some lighting on there is add some street lights to your power line poles, I think that would look very cool
Sensational. Like you same boat had this in my head for 20 years had no idea how I would achieve it. BUT as i have just finished my overhead refueling gantry and waiting for the glue to dry on the catwalks I have several ideas. Yours is intresting and like you I have the Walthers pipe kit so I love the additional detail. I was going to use thick solder that you paint black and leave the ends silver however because my hoses will drop down they need that straight down floppy look so I will keep experimenting I have also implemented an ingenious drainage system seen from CN fuel depot. I just finished wiring i the appropriate lighting and the scene is coming along nicely should go live within In the next couple of months in the mean time next week is a show stopper I finish the costal scene where I even hand modeled my own fish and chips. Lol. Classic keep up the great work see you in the next one.
Love your hoses. They look great. One cool easy detail is every track that unloads tanks has a big blue sign they usually leave between the rails that says “tank cars connected “. Love the layout
Thank you! I am actually making these signs in photoshop right now. One will go on the fence at the acid unloading area and the others will be on a pole that clamps on the rail in front of the cars.
Awesome layout. I actually used to run a switching locomotive for Railserve. #1046 in Moundsville WV at the Williams Energy chemical plant. It was an 8 track yard + 2 loading racks which help 12 total cars. You got the weathering on the cars and RSSX locomotives absolutely perfect!
This is a beautifully detailed layout. Well done! The hoses worked out well (not sure I'd be thrilled dragging 6-inchers around in real life lol...) and look "right"... The trans load facility was immediately recognizable compared to those I've visited in real life. I like the trucks, by the way. I am doing heavy-haul these days and your rgn/excavator look good, as does the service truck. The shed turned out perfectly and fits the scene well. Such sheds are a common sight in such locations for any number of reasons. The attention to details is what really makes this layout beautiful. Keep up the good work!
@@RailserveJohn You're quite welcome. I miss model railroading a lot, so I have to resort to "armchairing" it in the truck these days. I look forward to checking the progress from time to time.
John, always enjoy your layout videos. As I'm getting back into the MR hobby, I really appreciate your level of detail on how you "did this and that" to accomplish a scene. Your tips on where to buy items for the layout is always appreciated too!
Hi John A very good video as always. it is official: i am addicted to both your layout and your channel ;) i really like this awesome layout nd all the updates, thanks for sharing with us these tricks and such. i really hope you are going to do some more weathering and "how to" stuff in the future, they were really good and i like the light weathering on those tank cars as well as the pressuraid car you did with a more rusty appearence, maybe a video on truck and coupler weathering? cheers and may you keep on track ;)
Great video, once again! I really dig your layout and how it looks simple at a first glance but has many well-thought details. I'd love to see some more operations sessions where you switch the different costumers. Best regards from a German model railroader! And keep up your quality work here.
As usual, looks great! Thanks for sharing. I'm contemplating building a small layout based on the Inglenook Sidings puzzle. It would be a very small industrial park and transfer facility that doubles as a switching puzzle. But man, the prices on model RR stuff sure have gone up in the last 15 years!
Thank you Andrew. And yes sir those prices have gone up. This hobby can get pretty expensive but you don't need much to run some trains and enjoy the hobby :)
Brainstorming a new shelf layout for myself, your videos are a great inspiration into certain looks I'm after, those hoses look great and Ill be hijacking the idea for my liquid asphalt terminal! Nice work!
again great video john, and thanks for solving the same issue on the piping that I was pondering myself, also I like the idea of a staging yard of sorts,i did the same on mine with the exception that mine is only single track,i lightly ballasted added ground coverage so it looks more like an interchange track and it branches off the right end of my shelf layout about 2',If I could make a suggestion...if you plan on having that section removable and you have hardwood floors perhaps have that section on rolling castors ,might be easier to roll into place an remove to a corner the room when not in use...I did that on previous layout of mine and it took a lot stress off of handling and risking a car or loco going down into the valley of death[the floor]..lol.. worked really well for me,and at the end facing the center of the room I brought my fantasia up a quarter of an inch higher than the track surface and took some foam scraps and made like a berm or a small hill behind the rail bumpers to keep any cars from rolling off the end..
Thanks Joe! I am still very much in the design phase of the removable extension. I have carpet floors in the train room. The section wont be taken down often but i still want an easy connect and disconnect. I plan on starting the benchwork soon, and play around with different ideas on fold able legs and alignment pins.
nice vid.. sweet layout.... @ 9:41 a good staging area would be really nice in that area... and it's good that you started out small and let the layout grow out of necessity and not just because you wanna cobble something together just to fill up the space... your expansion will further enhance what you already have in place... and what's already in place is really good... even though it's small this is one of the top layouts I've seen on YT good stuff

Glad to see UPS got off he ass and went to work. As far as adding air hose to your low bed goes, you can run them under the truck to the goose neck. Or from the back of the cab to the front of the goose neck. know that I mean? Great work and your expansion will be a good thing to.
Great update..don’t be surprised if your planned expansion only becomes phase 1. I hope I’m still watching your videos when your layout fills that room!😂(been there)
Still looking good , and can't wait to do mine when I get that far. Anyway you could make your new extension with a hinge that folds up against your existing layout. That way you could leave all the scenery , car , and buildings on it . This way you just fold it to get to the window and when done just fold it out. Also good update.
Thank you. I have thought of the fold down method however it will be longer than 54 inches which is the height of the layout. I think i have the solution for an easy hookup. I just need to finish the bench work first.
There's a company that makes etched brass chain binders for hooking equipment to flat cars and trucks. I can't remember the name of the company but if you type etched brass model parts or something similar on Ebay, you can find them. They make straight binders and ratched binders with hooks on them or shackles. They are really nice and not too very expensive. For the detail you include and seem to like I thought you would like to know. 👍
Don't get discouraged Young fella it sure looks good. The extra touches are good. So there's some always something to improve. I see UPS is still slacking to.

Hey John. I went to Michael's to look for the green and black hollow "hose" material and couldn't find it. Is it under a specific name? Sorry to bother you.
only problem i have with this is at least on the BNSF you can not have the conductor in front of the car riding during a shove move... he would be on the side
Hey john,is there any way I can contact you,I'm building some semis and wanted to see what you think,I'd like to send some pics, that would be great, thank you
Dude! I was settling in for a nice video and that North Dakota State Mill flour cart rolled across the screen right away! I'm a local and I've done tons of work there! I very rarely watch model railroad stuff. What are the odds?
Just awesome modeling..John if I may ask what did you use to build the white building with the strips next to the 3 rusted tanks...size of the styrene sheets and strips? Also what 2 lights were added to building tops and who makes them....the more I study your art work the more it amazes me ...ty
Thanks Michael, unfortunately I can’t remember the item number on the evergreen strips although I measured them. They are 2mm X 4mm spaced at 16mm. I honestly just picked those dimensions based on photos and no prototypical data. The 2 light fixtures are off of Shapeways. I believe I found them by searching HO or 1:87 light fixtures. I painted and added SMD LEDs in them. Thanks for the comment. All the best, John
A car shop might be a interesting industry to model in that corner small rix building with a decent spur and a long siding next to it or switch back and you could model MOW equipment since there’s all ways a lot around those types of facility’s
Love the hoses! Extra 2 tracks for more cars will be a great idea. You need small colored wire for the electrical and air line hoses on your semi trailers. Usually red and blue for air and green for electrical. Check out Mark Kulak on Facebook. I believe he sells wideload signs and red flags? Tell him that I sent you! Might get a discount? Roy

@@RailserveJohn can't wait to see what you come up with. Good luck on your move brother!
Hey John. I went to Michael's to look for the green and black hollow "hose" material and couldn't find it. Is it under a specific name?
Sorry to bother you.
No worries. The name of it is Pony Bead Lacing. There might be other brands of it though
@@RailserveJohn thanks again
@@petevonstettina8627 What a great tip John, I couldn't find it at Michael's either, but did find it at Hobby Lobby.
Don't remember seeing the Chevy pickup before. Is that a 3D model?
Yes it is. its a "MadAboutCars" model on shapeways. He does amazing work. I show some of it in my Mack Dump Truck build video.
I recommend not building in front of a window as warping of track and decolorisation can accrue
Thanks. However the section will only be up while i am running the layout and there will be a backdrop attached which will block the sunlight.
Cool. Then you won’t have to worry.
only problem i have with this is at least on the BNSF you can not have the conductor in front of the car riding during a shove move... he would be on the side
Thanks for the comment. It’s just a private industrial switcher and there was no other place for his little hand to hold on to lol
Hey john,is there any way I can contact you,I'm building some semis and wanted to see what you think,I'd like to send some pics, that would be great, thank you
sure, my email is johnfarrington86@gmail.com
Dude! I was settling in for a nice video and that North Dakota State Mill flour cart rolled across the screen right away! I'm a local and I've done tons of work there! I very rarely watch model railroad stuff. What are the odds?
Hey that’s awesome! What are the typically loading into these cars?
@@RailserveJohn Finished flour. Lots and lots of it! It's the largest flour mill in the western hemisphere. There's only 2 larger in the world
Excellence!
Thank you Sir!
Pretty neat layout you got going on here. Nice tip for the hoses, appreciate that. Where'd you get your conductor figure from?
Thanks Jon. They are actually the "newer" Walthers figures. I just prime and repaint them using Vallejo paints and Testors neon yellow.
Time to retire the SW1500 or MP1500 for a GP38-3
lol maybe one day. I love these old switchers. But there will be some other power making occasional appearances on the layout shortly! lol
Do you think 22 gage wire might work for hoses? It seems about the same size as your tubing.
That should work just fine! They should hold shape like these do. give it a try, John
Very nice.
Thanks James!
Where did you get the bulk semi trailer in the beginning?
I built that from a 3D print. I made a video on it a few months back
Are you using these industries on your new layout?
No, unfortunately I’m going to start fresh and build new ones
A car shop might be a interesting industry to model in that corner small rix building with a decent spur and a long siding next to it or switch back and you could model MOW equipment since there’s all ways a lot around those types of facility’s
Thanks. I have a few MOW kits that i will start soon. A siding on the new extension will definitely be showing off some of them in the future. ;)
👍🏻👍🏻
Love the hoses! Extra 2 tracks for more cars will be a great idea. You need small colored wire for the electrical and air line hoses on your semi trailers. Usually red and blue for air and green for electrical. Check out Mark Kulak on Facebook. I believe he sells wideload signs and red flags? Tell him that I sent you! Might get a discount? Roy
Perfect! thanks Roy!
Tomorrow’s my 🎂
Happy birthday
Happy Birthday
Hope you had a good birthday
Omg
Let me compliment you accomplishment so far! May I also suggest a Decoder Buddy from www.nixtrainz.com for your Geep install. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I have herd of these. Very cool
Gorgeous work! I love it!
