Kudos to Ford and Darren for doing these interviews. Lightning is an amazing first-gen pickup truck. The problem is that after just two years, the specs on range and charging speeds are behind the competition and the gap keeps growing. Darren said it himself, EV tech is moving in dog years and it's been an eternity since 2022.

    • @darpompie4354
      @darpompie4354 26 дней назад +5

I agree. Awesome people working at Ford right now. We are very interested in the lightning but as you mentioned this initial EV space is going in dog years. Competitors are releasing their new trucks with longer ranges, 4 wheel steering, air suspension, openable mid gates.... and the killer feature 350+kw charging speeds. It's one thing to pay these crazy high prices on cutting edge products but it's a complete deal breaker to spend 100k on trucks that are outdated right off the lot. The resale-ability of a short range, low charge speed truck a few years from now is going to be nil and too much of a loss for us business to consider. The only way for us to buy lightings in its current iteration is if the price reflects what the competition is doing, which means a significant cost cut (20k off the higher packages). We would be willing to pay significantly more if the charging speeds were upgraded. (key thing is to get 100miles of range added in the shortest amount of time).

    • @dvwatts
      @dvwatts 25 дней назад +1

It’s not the charging speeds or really the battery size, it the availability of chargers. There are still places you can’t go and more places you can’t go and get back from. You still can’t get from San Antonio to South Padre without taking a 40mi detour into Corpus (non-Tesla), and you probably can’t make it at all towing a camper (again, non-Tesla). I wouldn’t pick the GM truck because of how the rear seats fold. I use the big open flat rear floor way more than I would ever use a mid gate. You are still $30k more than the ER Lariat.

@@darpompie4354I don’t know anyone personally or haven’t even seen anyone online who has purchased a Chevy Silverado EV for non fleet use. Hard to compare specs of vehicles actually on the road in customers hands to vehicles that have been promised for 2 years and still no customer deliveries. Maybe a year from now if GM can actually build and deliver some trucks should this be part of the argument.

    • @darpompie4354

@@brysonfry9612 Someone hasn't been watching "Out of Spec" lol. There are plenty of full on reviews and comparisons with the trucks that are being sold including the chevy. The lightnng was a great truck in 2022 for the pricing they were going to launch at. We were very interested but then they couldn't deliver, in both production or price. Imagine Apple launching a new iPhone and then can't produce them to meet demand. So to adjust for this, they and their stores jack up the price astronomically to gouge. 3 years later when they finally have their 2022 iPhone available., their competitors are announcing/releasing next gen 2024 models. News Flash. You can't sell 2020 tech in 2024 at 2024 prices. I am a Ford guy and we've used Ford trucks for our company for decades but there is a limit before I am forced to look at different brands. If I need a work truck with a V8 and chevy has one while Ford only has a small 4 cylinder, my choice has to be to switch.
-Being able to add 100miles of range in 10min compared to 40min is HUGE. If I am coming home from work and need to top off, 10min is still slow, but 40min is pure agony
-Ford is charging a premium of approx $10k to go from 230 miles to 320 miles of range, What type of cost should we give Chevy credit for 440 miles of Range.
-Not that I need 4 wheel steering but the chevy has that. Great for parking. Bottom line that adds cost and value.
-Air suspension. The lightning is acceptable for street driving but if it could rise a couple of inches for off road use, it would be much better. Again the Chevy has that.
-Mid Gate. Many times I need to carry some longer boards and stuff which I run through the back window. The Chevy's midgate idea looks good and again adds cost and value.
I understand your point, which is valid, GM is just starting to ramp up production so once again there is a wait. But I can't in good conscience spend close to 100k on trucks when I see these huge advancements (especially charging speeds) on the horizon. its not like Ford, GM and Ram leap frogging each other with 10hp where you just ignore it and stick to your brand. These are huge advancements that can't be ignored. Again, after a hard days work, I don't want to be walking around a parking lot for 40 minutes just to top up my 100k truck to get home. Chevy has a solution, Ford does not. If Ford can't up the charging speed on the current design and has to wait until T3, then they are going to lose out until they do.
The only way I would buy a current lightning is as a stop gap measure. In other words, I know the truck has too many compromises and I will dump it in a few years for a new one that actually does what we need. The problem with that, is the outdated tech at resale time will be even more off putting (maybe 600mile ranges and 100mile charges in 5min will be normal at resale time). That means who in the world will give me anything of value for it. To pay high and sell for nothing is a poor business strategy. If they are not upping the charging speed, then the prices almost needs to be slashed in half for me to consider it as a stop gap measure. I know that isn't happening so we'll see how things play out.

I loovvvveeee my F-150 Lightning!!! SO much ! Best truck ever .
I’m interested in what things that you came up with that were decided against in your teams.
I think the problems people have are greatly related to bad dealers and bad dealer service centers . It greatly affects the truck .
But the truck itself and Fords commitment to truly listen to the customer is amazing.
Personally I only have one complaint about my lighting. And that’s one of the software updates moved the location of the cruise mph number . The previously prominent number is now tiny and at the very bottom of the screen . Requiring more time for ur eyes off the road to find the cruise number

I own a 23 F150 XLT ER. I love it! Too many things to list. The huge bummer is the dealership experience. They talk smack about the trucks; they are not responsive, which hoses up the ownership experience. I've tried multiple dealerships, and it's a very consistently bad experience. How do they plan to overcome that?

Our local dealership did not know anything about the truck, they spread a bunch a false Information about range, charging speed, battery life etc. I drove over 4 hours to find a dealership that was not anti EV . It’s excusable ti not know your stuff, but to actively spread negative and false information about a product you should be representing needs to be addressed by Ford with discipline and urgency

Thank you for the Ford Lightening. Best F150 I have ever owned. I have been buying Fords since 1980. Traded my 2023 Eco boost F150 for my Lightening and it was the right decision. I would say Ford needs to advertise the Blue Oval Charge Network better and advertise your 48 and 80 amp home chargers. What I tell everyone; it's faster than a Raptor and Smoother than a Lincoln. One other thing. Insist dealers have Lightening and Mach E test drive events. Also I have found that I'm more knowledgeable about the Lightening and the resources that support it than the dealers I have talked to. I also felt like some salesmen are not liking EV's. This needs to change. I think people are being talked out of or gently nudged away from Lightening's by Dealerships. Just saying. Maybe not everywhere but definitely its happening. There is definitely some prejudice in the dealerships. If your sales team is united and gets behind the product you will sell more.

This is very true if you go in to a dealership they will steer you towards gas and say electric is terrible but then if you want electric all the sudden its the best and there is a premium to buy it. this is very frustrating because everyday people fall for this and will just buy gas when electric actually is better suited for them.

The Lightning is amazing truck from 2022. The problem is charging speed/range/efficiency is no longer competitive. I don't think 800v is necessary, but speed needs to be improved to the low 200s with a flat curve. Kudos to Ford for the curve, which is exactly what it needs to be--flat to 80%. Speed just needs to be increased to make this better for long range travel.

I really like the lightning, but please tuck the rear drive motor tighter up for ground clearance and looks plus aero benefits my main dislike of the current truck is the high rear nosedive look combined with hanging drive unit. Great interview guys, I really enjoyed learning more about the behind the scenes of Fords EV's. One thing we'd appreciate is an app for Samsung & Google watches for starting, locking, unlocking the truck. If you could add the ability to turn on the Pro Power Generator from the phone app that'd be awesome for camping and the construction site. Would also be nice to be able to open all windows and close all windows (including sunroof) in the phone app and keyfob. I would like the ability to turn OFF the double honk (when you walk away with the fob while the engine is running....this option needs to be in the vehicle settings so we can turn off or on if we like. We need the auto unlock door handles on the rear doors of the truck, especially the higher end trims. Makes no sense to only have them on the front doors. Almost daily I have to grab the front door handle then open up the rear door to put my bag and things in the back. This is frustrating! We would like the ability to go full screen (and I mean true full screen) for the apps that we use the most. I'd like to be able to stream movies (full screen) on the center screen while parked. Auto dim mirrors should also be on the passenger mirror not just the drivers and rearview mirror. The black piano finish on the center pillar (where the keypad is) needs a new material. This area is scratched before the customer even buys the truck and drives off the lot. Not acceptable. Needs to be a tougher finish. The paint finish for the rest of the truck is quite soft as well. Maybe a tougher clear coat on top for more durability? How about some memory seats for the passenger seats on the higher end trims? I'd like an option for a much better stereo that's currently offered as I'm not happy with the current systems. Go listen to the stereos in the Tesla's for example and then go back to the drawing board for the F150 stereos. Larger batteries and faster charging obviously for the Lightning. Really looking forward to the T3 launch in 25. Hopefully some of Darren's team see's the feed back in the thread and puts some into their future plans. Cheers

There are some great features in other brands that would be wonderful in an F150 Lightning, even though the Lightning is already a excellent truck.
The SYNC computer should have more storage and processing power for smoother transitions and faster responses, especially as the software storage grows with updates added over time.
I would love to have a built-in air compressor with pneumatic suspension, like in the Rivian R1T, that lets you raise and lower to accommodate entry/exit and get more clearance for offroad driving when you need it.
Also, having door handles that move in and out of the door for better aerodynamics while driving and security while parked, like in Tesla or Rivian and others, would be great.
I would be nice to have color changing ambient lighting options, and even exterior decorative light options, like a Knight Rider feature for the front light bar.

One feature that absolutely needs to be on the list of coming updates for existing FORD EV’s is real time efficiency information. So many times in my lightning I’m doing my best to arrive Out of Spec style either home or to a charger and the conditions of my drive change significantly so that my “trip 1” average over the last 200 miles is no longer accurate as to the amount of energy the truck is now using (weather changes, driving speed changes, ambient temperature changes) and I may still have 50-100 miles to travel with these new conditions but the truck says my average efficiency is still 2.3 miles/kwh when I know its likely more like 1.6 miles/kwh due to the new conditions. And yes the Guess o Meter will adjust at some point but all EV drivers know that’s only something to reference and not live by because you have to plan the remaining trip to determine if you are going to have enough energy or have to charge earlier than you planned. Routing with the truck navigation is not my preferred method, and currently apple Carplay EV routing is over-estimating my energy usage by 5-10% on 2-3 hour drives so manual calculation is typically necessary to prevent unneeded charges or arrivals with too low state of charge. So somewhere on the display, an instant measure of current energy usage would be so helpful or at the minimum a usage over the last 5-10 miles so that gauging that change to usage can allow for adjustment to expected remaining range. I live in rural Kentucky and drive my lightning all over the state for work, 250-400 miles round trip a day. Chargers are increasing but still very limited so I rely mainly on home charging to make these trips work and very specific stops with designated charging times to ensure I can make the distance on those longer days.

Always best to use "this trip" meter for recent range calculation rather than a trip meter that is longer history. You may need to select it in your menu if its not showing for you, but it is there.

@@darinbrazil5496 this is true but sometimes “This trip” may be a 200 mile drive and the last 50 miles the conditions are much worse or requiring more energy than the first 150 if that makes sense. So if you are needing to gauge can you make it home on remaining SOC, you really need to know your efficiency in the last 5 miles versus the last 145. For example if the first 150 miles are back country roads with no head wind, then the last 50 are going to be 50 miles at interstate speeds with a 30 mph head wind and heavy rain due to a storm that just moved in

@@brysonfry9612 Ya definitely understand your point, I have learned in my lightning to not really trust the range below 20% at highway speeds. I feel like it's more of a BMS problem of the vehicle not really knowing how much energy is really in the vehicle over a change in m/kwh scenario because at highway speeds below 20% the gauge just drops faster than other SOC. Mine has two areas of the battery like this, the 60% to 50% drops faster and anything below 20% drops faster.

I’m 70 years old, we bought a 2019 Tesla Model 3 new and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned and we love all of the features and benefits of EV’s. We want an EV van for road trips and camping with decent range and charging speed and we’ll buy one as soon as available.

Ford’s OTA process makes no sense. Staggered roll outs are fine, but there are Lightning owners still on 4.X.X when 6.8 has been out for more than 6 months. Social media makes this worse because people know they’re missing features and get annoyed at Ford for holding them back for seemingly no reason. SPEED UP THE OTA ROLLOUT FORD!

I came here to write comments so Ford could hear it. I love my Lightning Lariat ER, but it is missing basic features Tesla had 4 years ago (For EV and App) as well as basic features my 2014 Ram had 10 years ago. No walk away locks? Auto cool/Auto heat feature based on outside temp? Weak subwoofer on premium B&O sound system?
I have to give Kudos to Ford for the truck and for embracing OTA. They just need to learn how to pick up the pace and I really think the app refresh was the first step. The previous app was clearly an ICE app shoehorned to fit an EV. Is it just me or does PAAK work mediocrely. I often have to put my phone right close to the door so I can push the lock button on the handle. To be fair Tesla sometimes has problems with that as well, but for my model 3 it's an exception not the rule. I also think there must be a feature where pro-power is on, but the truck is not. IMHO...Lightning distinguished itself and set a "must have" standard of 240v and 120v power output. I think that feature single handedly reset the CT's roadmap because it would "not be a real truck" without it contrary to Tesla's Powerwall plan.
I would also love to believe that Ford embraced the Lightning based on market surveys, but something tells me that Elon showing a video of CT outpulling an F150 in a tug of war back in 2018 is what really put a bug up their butt. :) Wishlist for Gen 2 truck --> 200kwh battery that weighs less than current 130kwh battery and charges at 0-80% in 15 minutes. Fit, Finish, noise, rattle, comfort...Lightning leads the class there. That's the kind of stuff that doesn't make it into spec comparisons because it's subjective but frankly most important for daily usage. IMHO....a mid gate is a party trick that I'd never use and resent for the raddles that come along with it. I've owned Mazda, Chevy, Audi, Lexus, Ram, Toyota, Tesla but the Lightning is my first Ford.

Well I must be the lucky one . month back took 2023 lariat in for service work and a recall on the battery. I normally charge to 80 % , but driving my wife around for job, and charged to 100% . To my surprise it no longer charge to 320 miles, but now it reading 363 miles . I live in Wilmington NC , Kyle knows the area. Wil is average 45 speed limit , but we go to Pender country and Brunswick county where speed limit is 55 and 70 . If I stay in 55 and 45 using one pedal driving I am getting 363 mile range . We go out on 100- 130 miles a day . I have done this several times It keep adding up to the new range. The guys at the dealer said the they did a software update, that only they can do , maybe ford release some more the range from the battery in the update. Has anyone else hear of this ? Any how love the show.

Can't respect Darren enough, he's an idealist in a world where they're needed the most. The Lightning is a common sight in the PNW, so he must be doing something right. Aggressive advertising showing the plug-in benefits is desperately needed, despite the potential conflict of interest with the ICE lineup.

Regarding software, of course nobody competes with Tesla yet, however, I also own Cadillac, Volkswagen as well as Ford and Tesla. I’ve also driven BMW, Mercedes, Rivian in my role as a Turo host. I think the Ford software is better than Cadillac and Volkswagen this point. My OTA updates for the F150 seem to do well, and I think Ford understands one of Tesla‘s big benefits of being able to have all the hardwarefunctions updatable via software. I expect all the other manufacturers will develop this in time.

when farley took over and put him directly over the model E section of fomoco.
Hence why they switched to nacs no matter what farley says and why they have poured more into the t3 truck program&rumored 3row ev.
Fields knows fomoco needs real innovative ground up ev platforms to compete against tesla&the Chinese.
Plus the ucoming in 2026 25k starting msrp skunk works compact cuv and compact pickup evs.
They also radically invested in their own cell plants, when farley didn't have Doug? He and hackett said Ford would NOT do their own cells, than 18 months later&putting Doug in charge of model E?

I know there are a lot of updates people want for the Lightning but I think the most beneficial update that would give the user a better experience and also give the vehicle more range is updating the Auto Climate Control logic. I have all my vehicles set to 68 or 70 or 72 year round auto climate and this works fine in the Tesla and Audi however in the Ford Lightning with the auto climate set to 70 and its a nice day in California at 62 degrees outside the lightning auto climate logic thinks the heat needs to be on and it takes me about 2 miles of driving to realize something is wrong because I know the M/Kwh I get and so I start searching for the problem and sure enough the heater is on for no reason at all. For me its just an inconvenience of not using the auto climate control but for someone else who doesn't understand that they should actually be getting more M/Kwh they just think that this truck doesn't have enough range for me to use when if they knew the heat was on they would say well there is no reason for the heat to be on let me turn that off or they would send in a complaint to Ford that the heater is turning on when it shouldn't be on instead of just thinking well this vehicle won't work because it doesn't have enough range. The second and item that would make the vehicle more efficient is the pro power onboard inverter which always turns on when the truck is powered on. This feature should default to off and then let the user decide if they want it to power on at start up of the vehicle. I get 380 mixed miles highway/city and over 400 city miles only out of the ER battery pack with watching these two settings and I use this vehicle every day in my construction business loaded with tools in the frunk and a lumber rack, pulling a trailer at times and hauling materials to job sites. These two fixes would give people a completely different view or the range and capability of this vehicle. I have sent these two update requests directly to ford through the truck multiple times but I have no idea if it is even on their radar as there is no return acknowledgment from Ford of the request or feedback given.

I like the story of the history, I want to see the video of the guy saying he's not leaving without leaving a deposit! I absolutely love my F-150 XLT Lighting, it's 99% of everything I wanted when I first heard about this truck. My only complaint is the same as most that I would like a little more on the tech side of things. More information on the display. State of charge %, Voltage, Amps, temperature, etc, etc... I cant wait until those are available to my XLT, keep up the amazing work and don't forget about us early adopters we like the shiny new features too.

Had experience with a Winnebago prototype RV on the e-Transit chassis, so we were familiar with Ford’s EV approach. Frustrated with our Model Y with a trailer, we went looking for a pickup truck. Lightning Lariat ER piqued our interest. It’s so good, the Model Y has been parked, unused for months and is going to get sold. The Lightning is just far more practical for where we live and what we haul in our rural location. Lane keeping and BlueCruise do less than FSD on Tesla, but we find the Ford driver assist software interacts with the human driver far more predictably. Won’t ever be buying another Tesla.

Most drivers want to get in the vehicle and drive and not have to think about how to be efficient enough to get to where they are going so Ford needs to learn to make the vehicle more efficient for the end user and most Americans are used to using Auto Climate Control as a set it and forget it and so most people driving the lightning are using energy they don't need to be using every time they drive because the heater turns on when it doesn't need to and the heater is one of if not the most energy consuming part on the vehicle. The logic on the Auto Climate Control needs to be fixed and the consumption will drop and Ford could technically rerate these vehicles with higher range. Efficiency is the largest cost saver for a manufacture as the battery they claim is the most expensive part in the vehicle so if you have better efficiency you can make smaller batteries or you can give more range with the same amount of batteries.
