I still believe many Americans do not understand how far Chinese build quality and sophistication has come. These same people would be shocked how much made in China parts are inside GM and Ford vehicles sold here.
That's true for everything Chinese. They still have a backwards image of the nation despite it being leap years ahead of anywhere else in the world when it comes to EV's, High Speed Rail, Humanoid Robots, Digital banking, etc.
Americans seem to forget that virtually 100% of the electronic products sold in the USA these days have been made in China, such as cell phones, laptop computers, PCs, televisions, and radios.
Made in China using American designs and technology. While American companies chase cheap labor and limited regulation. Apple products are made in China. Does anyone think they were invented or designed there?
Hi from México, I've just bought a BYD Song plus Hybrid PHEV SUV. And it is very impressive. Excellent build quality and materials. 60 miles on electric power, 600 miles combined. Top quality product for $38,000 usd. Former BMW, MERCEDES ,AUDI owner
A recent study by US insurer, AutoinsuranceEZ found that hybrid cars had the worst fire record, while EVs were the least likely type of car to catch fire. Hybrid cars had 3474.5 fires per 100,000 sale; petrol cars had 1,529.9 fires per 100,000 sales and EVs had just 25.1 fires per 100,000
In Thailand. I use a BYD Dolphin, the car costs 17,000 dollars, good quality, full technology. I drive about 100 kilometers a day, and use about 40 dollars for electricity per month. Compared to a Toyota Camry, I have to pay 470 dollars per month for gas. It's a big difference.
I saw a video about an Australian official talking about EV, he says its good for EU and the US to use some tariff to protect there own industry, but we Australian dont have a auto industry, so why we just enjoy cheaper cars.
After I drove Chinese EVs, I don’t have desire to drive any other EVs anymore. They are just that good. And finally consumers will not be cheated and fooled by the superficially high price tags on American and European cars. As. Consumer I feel my right of buying a more affordable and more advanced EVs made in China has taken away by our government. This is a violation of human right and principle of free market economy which should be driven by consumers not by government control.
Zeekr owner here, the zeekr in the video, the frunk need a forceful smacking to close the lid properly. It is not a panel gap thing, they are produced from the same production line as Volvo and polestar, because they are based on the same SEA platform. It is a negative side effect to make the front lid extra light and soft for pedestrian protections. Believe me, the first time I try to close the lid, I thought there is something wrong with the front locking mechanism.
You just have to close it as every Tesla owner closes theirs. Soft and with much tlc for your car. At the very last press down left and right of the middle of the hood with your left and right hand palm without any oil on it - better use soft gloves or microfibre cloth - until you hear the soft "click" that signals the successful operation of closing a soft aluminum bonnet. Smack it down at your own peril.
You know what is scary ? These are not even the top ones or best selling one. These 3 are considered “not so good sales” relatively. BYD song , Zeekr 007, Huawei Aito m7/m9, Xiaomi Su 7, BYD Yang Wang U8, NIO cars with their battery swap technology and some other cars which I can’t remember right now . . .
BYD's "Fang Cheng Bao 方程豹" (translation: Formula Leopard) series SUVs is very hot in China right now. Their Bao-5 is selling very good probably better than the Zeekr Tanks right now. Also a Bao-3 is coming out. And they have a concept Bao-9 supercar showing in the Greater Bay Area Auto Show in Shenzhen right now.
Had Atto3 over a year, not a single issue, saved me $4000 on fuel, very comfortable and smart. Got a seal performance, man, this car just amazing, better then any BMW and Mercedes I ever drove with a fraction of their price, 570HP 670Nm the 4 wheels control kicks in 10-20ms and never let you loose any grip of the road. The HUD is the only one I can see with polarise sunglass during bright day, no wind noise on high speed, seat heated and ventilated in 2 levels, steering wheel and mirror all heated. Seat auto slide, two wireless charger and fast wire charger, and more.

Ive been driving a Xpeng P5 for almost 3 years now. It's a no nonsense, not a lot of fancy tech, gets the job done EV. 210hp, camry sized sedan, ample leg room, and drives very well. Legacy auto has a lot of catching up to do.
Many people still think that electric vehicles and fuel vehicles are just the difference between gasoline and electricity, and do not realize that this is a shift from four wheels to artificial intelligence.
Not profit, but making it cheaper for consumers. But also, Tesla invented the central screen with no buttons because they wanted to have OTA updates that would push new features. You can't do that if buttons are connected to a feature - what if you want to redesign or remove the features? It's like old cars that still have CD players.

These are all coming here to Brazil ,less Tesla unfortunately. Keep in mind, that China is a much larger trade partner with Brazil than US. BYD & GWM have Brazilian factories that are coming online. In response, the legacy automakers (with some exceptions like Honda) have begun dropping prices & improving option packages. Plug-in hybrids are quite popular due to lack of charging infrastructure. But it is just a matter of time. The thing that is holding back the entire takeover is that lack of fast charging infrastructure. When that gets resolved in Brazil, it’s lights out for legacy auto.
Question for you, What GASOLINE or formulation does Brazil use there , as to my knowledge Brazil has Ethanol mix or is it pure Ethanol , I ask because M85 has been known to damage gaskets corrossion and such, Chinese Hybrids would have different adaptations of ICE?
Brazil is like Canada highly urbanized so the need for large inter-city charging is MUCH MUCH less than the USA or Europe... We are both linear nations that basically exist as long rail/road corridors... Here in Canada both Tesla and Petro-Canada built nation-wide rapid charging networks by openly opening about 2 dozen stations nation wide and it covers about 95% where people in the nation actually live. For those random routes off grid into the wild, hybrid's are wildly popular here for this very reason and why I think PHEV's will do well for a while unless governments dole out the cash to subsidize more "unprofitable" but much needed remote locations...

China made? Tesla is an American company that developed its own designs, technology and manufacturing methods. China supplied the labor. Not exactly China made. Look at the American F-35 fighter jet and compare it to the Chinese version. Just a coincidence that they look so much alike? The real differentiator for the XPeng G6 is the charging speed, range, energy efficiency, rear room, the material quality, the voice assistant and the ADAS. Those are what really make the price difference all the more glaring.
The price of BMW i3 in China starts from less than $30,000, while the actual price of Mercedes-Benz EQE and EQE suv in China starts from $45,000, which is equivalent to a 60% discount, and the sales volume is still very poor.

Stop saying Chinese EVs copied from Tesla. That is completely false statement. Chinese EVs are more affordable and much more advanced than any other EVs in the market. Chinese companies are not profit driven but consumer oriented that to ensure the affordability is the objective for all Chinese EVs. That should be a good thing for all consumers around the world. These American testers are speechless by the high quality, affordability and advancement of Chinese Evs. But they cannot help but still talk with sour grape tones and trying to pick bones out of eggs. Basically they feel the time for American companies cheating and fooling consumers with artificially high price tag will be threatened by more affordable and more advanced EVs made in China.
You must be joking, right? Look at the body of their “direct competitor”. It’s almost a copy of TESLA. China didn’t even have the technology that Tesla invented. look at their inside design,. Large center position screen look familiar to you? And what about profits, $3000 less expensive, and made in China, how is that’s not profit driven? You must be from China 🤦🏻
Well they absolutely milked Tesla for everything they could. That is so obvious. Musk made it easy when he marveled at how quickly he could build Gigafactories in China. China is doing what they have done to all of the leading Western companies that have been induced to establish factories there. They are just much more highly motivated. Tesla blazed a trail and BYD and others are overtaking Tesla. Ford and Chevrolet sat on their hands. Tariffs will not really be a help unless we have some sort of industrial policies which democracies are not well-equipped to execute on.
They didn't think of gigacasting, minimalist interior with big screen, structural battery by themselves. I have nothing against copying, and the Detroit automakers can't even do that, but nobody can say that the Chinese aren't copying from Tesla. I predict that the Chinese will be innovating within the next ten years and Tesla and everyone else will be copying from them too. The best path to better EVs is to have everyone innovating and everyone copying.
@@peterwilliams7335 Communist authoritarian countries don’t have to worry about profits and cheap labor. Their businesses are heavily subsidized by the government and seeded by industrial espionage.
As a XPeng G9 owner in China. The video showed me that Americans are behind in cars not in technology but in thinking. They don't comment on the smart cockpit design of the car, only the driving experience. It's like holding a smartphone and only evaluating the signal strength and call volume. BTW, if I'm thinking correctly, the XPeng G6 and Avatrr 12 should be in comfort mode not sport mode.
So rather than compete on quality, performance, and features, the US auto industry will hide behind a 100% tariff paywall. In the meantime, the US EV customers will have to suffer sub-standard vehicles, and US automakers won't innovate or improve the vehicles, because they don't have too due to a protected market. The only winners here are the US automakers.
They've been doing that for decades with the 25 year import rule that stops people grey-importing cars that aren't sold in the USA unless they're more than 25 years old . In the UK I can import almost any vehicle I want as long as I can convert the speedo to mph.
European and Chinese safety regulations are harmonized and include pedestrian impact testing. US regulations require minimum damage to the bumper in low-speed impacts, but do not test for pedestrians. Chinese vehicles will likely need minor modifications to the bumpers, as do many current European cars. There are also some features like adaptive headlights, camera-based mirrors, etc. that are not yet allowed in the US.

China can subsidize their industries a lot to make the cars cheaper and labor costs are low. What the tarriffs are doing are protecting our own manufacturing industry and passing more bills to help enourage more industry and manufacturing to come back to America, especially in light of the supply chain problems we had with Covid.
US auto manufacturers used government subsidies to buy back shares to benefit the executives & shareholders instead of using them to improve efficiency & innovations.

~80% of Americans have never ridden in an EV, let alone driven one. Many still think "golf cart". A well integrated EV powertrain can make even a mundane grocery getter feel like a Mercedes, thanks to the combination of instant torque and quiet operation. The oil & gas industry, combined with legacy auto makers who don't want to change too quickly help spread negative information on siloed media outlets (and truthfully, there are still downsides - like the grid isn't necessarily ready for mass adoption and next gen battery chemistry still needs to be adopted to make people feel safe - albeit much of the risk is way overblown) .

I would recommend waiting, because in my view in the next 2 years there will be a big improvement of chinese evs. Better consumption, autonomous driving capabilities and fast charging will also be part of lower price segments. For example Xpeng's MONA model coming in Q3 2024 will introduce advanced autonomous driving capabilities to the 20.000$ price segment. The ZEEKR 001 facelift can charge at 550kw and do 10-80 in 11 minutes. These cars will be international eventually, so that's why I'd recommend waiting !

Oh look, arm chair “reviewers” making snide comments and even bad mouthing John, who was actually touching and driving the cars. Now we all know Americans are shaking in their boots because they know they can’t compete.
Nobody can compete. China doesn't have to worry about human labor driving up the price of cars the way USA, Germany, Korea and Japan do. A lot of automation / robotics is used in making their cars now also hence the decent build quality. There are factories there where humans are pretty much only used for unloading materials and the final QC checks.
I don't think it's so much that they can't compete. It's that they can't compete while keeping their longstanding business model of soaking the consumer as much as possible. They REALLY don't want to give up that model.

The parasitic draw varies a lot by manufacturer and according to how you adjust the settings. A lot of gas cars will drain the 12V battery after a few weeks of sitting. Some EVs can be set to draw less and last much longer.

The internal competition in the Chinese market is much more intense than that in the American market. This full competition makes the products of every car manufacturer and supplier evolve rapidly and iteratively, not only in terms of progressiveness technology, but also in terms of aesthetics, economy, reliability and charging convenience. If anyone believes that China is excessively subsidizing, it is ignoring that the second most subsidized car company in China is Tesla China, which is wholly owned by the United States.
That was the small price that they had to pay to get Tesla manufacturing in China, so that they could learn and benefit from its technology. Without that, it would have taken a few more years to accelerate to this point.
It's not the legacies that are worried it's the Americans that are going to get destroyed our freedom will be gone the jobs will be gone and we will become a third world country.

The thing I most enjoy about my 2024 Model Y dual motor is when I step on the Go pedal it goes, right now, no hesitation just GO. It is hard to watch a video and see what these cars are doing when John hits the pedal, but I didn't see any of them appear to respond similar to the Y. The $56,000 car was the least impressive, the $32,000 car clearly the best value, but with the Tesla and the $7500 tax break bringing it in at ~$37,000, still my first choice. Double the other prices with a 100% tariff and they become totally irrelevant; even 25% tariff was overkill for these prices.
By the way,The sales of these three cars are very poor in its market segmentin in China,Not bad, but very bad. Xpeng's actual price in China starts at $25,000.

It doesn't matter what Canada does or wants. If the US shuts out Chinese cars, Canada must follow. Most of the world's car markets safety standards are harmonized under various NCAPs: EuroNCAP, ChineseNCAP, Latin America NCAP, Korean NCAP, Australian NCAP etc. So a Chinese designed car will not require much modification to be sold in Europe, or Australia, or Mexico for that matter (since you can buy BYDs and other Chinese cars right now in Mexico). Canadian safety regulations however are harmonized with the American FMVSS standards, which would require more modification in order to be compliant. What this means is that a car would only be sold in Canada if the carmaker already took the time and money to make it US compliant. Nobody is going to do all that just the sell a car in the much smaller Canadian market. But since the US put on these tariffs to block the Chinese carmakers to enter the US market, then that also means they won't be selling in Canada either. The only exception would be Volvo, since they do sell in the US, which means they can then also sell those US compliant cars in Canada.

You get Vinfast made in vietnam. It's all political.
They've been doing that for decades with the 25 year import rule that stops people grey-importing cars that aren't sold in the USA unless they're more than 25 years old .
In the UK I can import almost any vehicle I want as long as I can convert the speedo to mph.
The US automakers will be the losers because they will get lazy. The irony is the tariff will actually accelerate the demise
Pretty sad, the west has become everything they said communism would bring

Quite likely different bumpers for low speed impacts. Compare the old Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Europe and Japan vs. North America.

Yeah, because those big oil companies bankrolled those idiots in congress and whitehouse.
I like that, "they are told". If most Americans actually put their butts in the seat of an EV and drive it, they would be interested. Too many Americans just listen to the talking heads of their tribe.

I don't get how Musk and Tavares say they'd rather have no tariffs and Musk would rather have no EV tax credit. Ford, Stellantis, GM, and Tesla would be in deep trouble without all the protectionist policies that are in place. The Toyota BZ4X is $10,000 more than the G6 and has half the range and half the horsepower and a worse interior. I think these Chinese brands would dominate the market if they came here with $30k EV's with 400 hp and 400 miles of range.
BTW, toyota signed a deal will BYD to use bys's ev tech to build toyota's ev model such as Bz4x..
Cause both Elon Musk n Carlos tavares are hypocrites. Classic fork tongue people. They were literally begging for tariffs to be imposed. Once imposed n they feel safe, they turn around, play innocent and claim they didn't ask for it.
Reasons? Cause they know they have stepped on the toes of the Chinese, their most important market. For sure, there will be blowbacks n retaliations...

What's taking us so long to get digital side view cameras to be legal in the US?
I don't know why we can't yet, my Honda Accord has a camera on the right side mirror. When signal right, it shows the view and blind spot on the monitor.
Thank you for fixing the mix with audio now centered and not L and R like the prior interview.
As a Chinese, I think the car that these two guys test drive is not a top class Chinese car at all.
Here are my top Chinese cars:
1. AITO M9, a brand jointly developed by Huawei and Seres, is renowned for its autonomous driving technology, intelligent cockpit, and comfortable driving experience. It features an extended range hybrid powertrain, a comprehensive range of 1400km, a price of $70000, and monthly sales of 16000 vehicles.
2. Yangwang U8, BYD's high-end brand, is known for its powerful body quality and hybrid technology. It can achieve stationary U-turns, emergency floating, and high-speed tire blowouts without rollover. It has 1200 horsepower, a price of $150000, and sells 1000 vehicles per month.
The Zeeker gets an instrument cluster. The Volvo XC30 doesn’t 🥹
The Zeeker not only has an instrument cluster but also a HUD, which the EX20 has neither.
I read somewhere that the Zeekr brand is going to be an Upscale brand in the Geely group who also owns Lotus, and others like Proton, budget line?
@@AuralioCabal-nl8gi
That’s what I’ve heard. But then they released the Zeekker for less money than people originally thought it was going to be.
@@AuralioCabal-nl8gi We have the Zeekr 001 here in Scandinavia, it's absolutely fantastic. Test driven once, love it. Would get that instead of a Polestar.
@@JonasDavidsson Prior to Covid an American blogger toured the new Zeekr factory and got a test drive, that factory was said to be capable of 200,000 +units/ yr production, I'd like to know what Geely has in store for the Proton brand, Lotus I believe will be the sports and upscale SUV line, the Black London Cab looks nice too.
Great video thanks for sharing with us. Will be very interesting what happens by 2030 and the future beyond. What a time to be alive for this car revolution

Nice work John and team.
Great to see John's feedback on synthetic engine noises, in situ.
@@davidmenasco5743 I know I do not care for the fake sounds and fake shifter things some companies are doing.
Media intentionally use 'cheap' to describe Chinese EV - because it sounds lousy. But they are actually good & reasonable value, no cheap : )
You guys put out the best videos, first impression reviews. Love that you drove the Y first to set up a baseline. I feel Zeekr is the one to watch.
Would it be feasible to rent a race track for a day to see how much range these EVs really have?
2nd this question above
Why would you want to run these EVs full out around a racetrack when no one is ever going to do that in the real world? 🤔
@@TheMadmax0609 people do that all the time in the taycan, model 3 performance, ioniq 5 N
@@TheMadmax0609 To find out how far they go at exact highway speed without interference, no go flat out.
They'll have the EPA guidance for that and it won't really be a valid test until they are true import models consumers can buy.
This is why china cant import. years a head of any western auto. byd dolphin would be huge here. also, these are first gen! they have the ability to change up design and tooling fast now. gm ford are in the stone age.
Years ahead of Western auto on what tech? There is nothing in those cars that any other maker could not produce. It is those things at the cost that is the interesting part. However, since the Chinese government is supplementing the build costs of these cars the (Avatar 12 is actually a government car) and Western governments don't/won't subsidize manufacturers, the fact that these cars have X amount of tech for such lower costs is in no way a valid comparison metric.

Thanks for the comparison! Any details on the conversions used? For example, are all four cars using the China EPA range numbers or is it a mix of US/China (which are quite different)? Are prices China prices or a mix of US/China with some conversions?
The prices for the Chinese vehicles would be Chinese ones as they are not for sale in the US. Might be able to get them in Mexico
Probably Chinese prices and WLTP mileage which is optimistic , add 10 to 15% for US type EPA. The next generations coming from Geely and BYD who both claim the best in efficiency will be fun to watch.
It is the price in China. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 standard range is around 30K USD in China, if not less.
Is the Cadillac LYRIQ selling in the US now? As I know, the platform that the GM called Ultium used on that car is very similar to the Xingyun platform designed by the SAIC.
Where are the NIO and ONVO offerings? These care competitive and have battery swap too!
The Zeeker and the Volvo ex30 are built on the same platform.
Which Swedish doesn’t contribute much.
