And finally consumers will not be cheated and fooled by the superficially high price tags on American and European cars. As. It is not a panel gap thing, they are produced from the same production line as Volvo and polestar, because they are based on the same SEA platform. Believe me, the first time I try to close the lid, I thought there is something wrong with the front locking mechanism.

These are all coming here to Brazil ,less Tesla unfortunately. Keep in mind, that China is a much larger trade partner with Brazil than US. BYD & GWM have Brazilian factories that are coming online. In response, the legacy automakers (with some exceptions like Honda) have begun dropping prices & improving option packages. Plug-in hybrids are quite popular due to lack of charging infrastructure. But it is just a matter of time. The thing that is holding back the entire takeover is that lack of fast charging infrastructure. When that gets resolved in Brazil, it’s lights out for legacy auto.

Brazil is like Canada highly urbanized so the need for large inter-city charging is MUCH MUCH less than the USA or Europe... We are both linear nations that basically exist as long rail/road corridors... Here in Canada both Tesla and Petro-Canada built nation-wide rapid charging networks by openly opening about 2 dozen stations nation wide and it covers about 95% where people in the nation actually live. For those random routes off grid into the wild, hybrid's are wildly popular here for this very reason and why I think PHEV's will do well for a while unless governments dole out the cash to subsidize more "unprofitable" but much needed remote locations...

Chinese companies are not profit driven but consumer oriented that to ensure the affordability is the objective for all Chinese EVs. That should be a good thing for all consumers around the world. These American testers are speechless by the high quality, affordability and advancement of Chinese Evs. But they cannot help but still talk with sour grape tones and trying to pick bones out of eggs. Basically they feel the time for American companies cheating and fooling consumers with artificially high price tag will be threatened by more affordable and more advanced EVs made in China.

China is doing what they have done to all of the leading Western companies that have been induced to establish factories there. They are just much more highly motivated. Tesla blazed a trail and BYD and others are overtaking Tesla. Ford and Chevrolet sat on their hands. Tariffs will not really be a help unless we have some sort of industrial policies which democracies are not well-equipped to execute on.

I don't get how Musk and Tavares say they'd rather have no tariffs and Musk would rather have no EV tax credit. Ford, Stellantis, GM, and Tesla would be in deep trouble without all the protectionist policies that are in place. The Toyota BZ4X is $10,000 more than the G6 and has half the range and half the horsepower and a worse interior. I think these Chinese brands would dominate the market if they came here with $30k EV's with 400 hp and 400 miles of range.

Toyota is selling Rav4 in China starting about 15k USD, while US price is 30k+. If there's no profit, Toyota can just quit from China, but they choose to stay. That means they are able to earn money even the price is only half comparing to US. Do you really believe a Rav4 worth 30k USD? Tariffs is not protecting those companies, actually it is killing them slowly. Without tariffs, they will start to make better products in the competition.

I would recommend waiting, because in my view in the next 2 years there will be a big improvement of chinese evs. Better consumption, autonomous driving capabilities and fast charging will also be part of lower price segments. For example Xpeng's MONA model coming in Q3 2024 will introduce advanced autonomous driving capabilities to the 20.000$ price segment. The ZEEKR 001 facelift can charge at 550kw and do 10-80 in 11 minutes. These cars will be international eventually, so that's why I'd recommend waiting !

The internal competition in the Chinese market is much more intense than that in the American market. This full competition makes the products of every car manufacturer and supplier evolve rapidly and iteratively, not only in terms of progressiveness technology, but also in terms of aesthetics, economy, reliability and charging convenience. If anyone believes that China is excessively subsidizing, it is ignoring that the second most subsidized car company in China is Tesla China, which is wholly owned by the United States.

The thing I most enjoy about my 2024 Model Y dual motor is when I step on the Go pedal it goes, right now, no hesitation just GO. It is hard to watch a video and see what these cars are doing when John hits the pedal, but I didn't see any of them appear to respond similar to the Y. The $56,000 car was the least impressive, the $32,000 car clearly the best value, but with the Tesla and the $7500 tax break bringing it in at ~$37,000, still my first choice. Double the other prices with a 100% tariff and they become totally irrelevant; even 25% tariff was overkill for these prices.

It doesn't matter what Canada does or wants. If the US shuts out Chinese cars, Canada must follow. Most of the world's car markets safety standards are harmonized under various NCAPs: EuroNCAP, ChineseNCAP, Latin America NCAP, Korean NCAP, Australian NCAP etc. So a Chinese designed car will not require much modification to be sold in Europe, or Australia, or Mexico for that matter (since you can buy BYDs and other Chinese cars right now in Mexico). Canadian safety regulations however are harmonized with the American FMVSS standards, which would require more modification in order to be compliant.
What this means is that a car would only be sold in Canada if the carmaker already took the time and money to make it US compliant. Nobody is going to do all that just the sell a car in the much smaller Canadian market. But since the US put on these tariffs to block the Chinese carmakers to enter the US market, then that also means they won't be selling in Canada either. The only exception would be Volvo, since they do sell in the US, which means they can then also sell those US compliant cars in Canada.
