I just got my first Airbrush today because of these tutorials and tried out this scheme. I’m really surprised how well I did for my first attempt. Thanks
Absolutly my fave deathwing colour recipe I've seen. Just ordered up a couple of the paints for this that I didn't have so that I can give it a go. Can't wait to try it
A bit late to the party here, but hopefully you're still watching the comments. I'm struggling to replicate this scheme quite a bit. I've taken extra care that I'm using the exact products mentioned so there shouldn't be any discrepancies there. My main problem is with getting the right tone. Overall, after going through the steps, my model ends up quite a bit brighter than yours. I'm suspecting this has something to do with how the gloss varnish coat interacts with the model as, when I apply it, it doesn't darken down my model as it does with yours. I'm using the same varnish as in the video, sprayed through an airbrush and thinned with normal airbrush thinner. In addition, when I go to do the panellining, the enamel wash doesn't flow into the recesses as rapidly and directly as in the video. So, perhaps there's something not quite right with the capilar reaction. Can't tell why though as, again, it's the exact same products. I've made sure to give the model a few thin coats of the gloss varnish - but it's still a bit hard to tell the glossyness on the bone parts; it's showing up way more glossy on the black parts of the model (I'm doing a heresy era scheme).
Maybe this will help. The ratio for satin varnish in the graphic doesn't match the voiceover. I think this video could do with a redo given all the comments.
I was having the same issue - rewatched the video a few times and discovered key to the highlight stage is the side to side action with the airbrush from above the model and to the right. Got great results then. Also found a 5:1 ratio thinner to paint works best with very gentle pull backs on the trigger to not flood the model. No issues with shading though - try thinning the enamel wash further
Gw says do a total wash of sepia, but I also prefer to pin wash. I do it as my final step on deathwing, if you thin the sepia wash just right you can then also blend it up from the shadows to give some good variation in the bone colours.
Check out this video for robes ruclips.net/video/sOgF19pYf98/видео.html. I put the colours used in the description. Followed this guide and just glazed a very thin layer of contrast at the end.
I really love these videos, bit is part of this tutorial missing? It ends with a very brown looking model and then cuts to a much more cream coloured Ancient
It's been quite a few editions of war-hammer since I've played so I need to ask, are there regular marines with bone armor? I thought it was just Death wing Terminators. Obviously I understand the model choice may have been just for demo. But I'm curious. Also, excellent video! Your paint techniques are really amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it! I remember back in 2nd edition Angels of Death era there would be commanders who had deathwing honours and painted their armour bone even though not in Terminator armour. Seems they are going back to this old piece of lore and reviving it for these veterans.
Hi, at first let me say that I really like your work! Actually I am just colouring my figures like you did but I have a problem: When using the Tamiya colour XF-72 on a black primer, the figure gets way too dark, really looking "brown" instead of your light brown/beige. What am I doing wrong? Did you mix the Tamiya XF-72 with anything else besides the thinner?
It’s not mixed with anything. It may be that you are using very thin coats so need to build the colour up a little more so that the primer is not showing.
Good morning everybody, Can somebody by any chance confirm that the airbrush +compressor/tank that is the best seller on amazon (you know that same model that us just rebranded) fendga 186k it is called here, is good enough for priming, smooth even base coating and doing some zenithal + washes ? Knowing that I would apply minutious care to the equipment, or do I absolutely need an Iwata/badger airbrush even for those basic applications ? Thanks a lot
The AS series ( 186 is the tank one i think) are good and we've used them for years. The free brushes you often get with them are made of the cheapest possible materials and very poorly machined, every so often you'll get one that works fine for a bit, but if you're serious about using an airbrush in your hobby then i'd save up and pick up our signature series H&S Evolution. It'll last you for ages.
I got myself a very cheap airbrush set of Amazon. It was about 80€ and included everything you need. The brand is called Timbertech. I am using this set for 2 years now and didnt have any Problems with it. If you are really into airbrushing you can definetly tell a difference to a more expensive airbrush. But if you are getting started, this is all you need. . Its not the most precise one but you can get awesome results. Here is a Model i painted with this set: www.ebay.de/itm/184352014420
@@yonkha5018 that is also the brand available here ! Is the application of basecoat really smooth ? Even with metallic paints ? That's really all I mainly want to shave off so I can get to detailing right away, if by any chance you have more photos on which you used that airbrush i would be very grateful
Sorry if the title wasn't clear enough. We felt that painting an entire marine to show the armour recipe would make for a more interesting and informative video, as opposed to an arm and a bit of thigh. There's also a full video dedicated to the banner coming up next week, hopefully you're still subscribed and will enjoy watching that.
Wish you would do one on the Dark Angel Green Robes, would love to get close to that color scheme
This is a great video ,love the short quick content

Nice one! A new army project?
@@cultofpaint I’ve been working on my DA’s for a couple of years. I just couldn’t get the Deathwing right.
If you’re on Instagram give us a tag when you’re done, be great to see, I’ve been itching to paint some deathwing using this recipe.

Amazing results,,, every time I see you paint I change what army I'm going to do lol
Haha that’s the way of the hobby right!
Always find some purpura in fabrics to make green colors to pop in oposition. Super nice tut.
thanks, that was the decision for the purple purity seals
sooooo happy u did this video. looks amazing
Thanks!! We're enjoying playing around with these models seeing what videos we can do for you all.
I'd love to see you guys do the normal Dark Angels color scheme.
We'll get to them at some point I'm sure.
@@cultofpaint Another vote for Dark Angels
Brilliant technique with the use of enamel wash
It's a great product.
Beautiful looking and very simple. Keep it up
Thanks Joe, we'll try!
Love the voiceovers. Really informative but really concise at the same time. Great series.
Thanks Paul, that's exactly our aim.
Nice one Henry. Loving these videos so far.
Thanks bud, Enjoying making them.

Just the lighting. These early videos we were still learning. The final result is much more the bone colour.
Great job!
Lol the music was sooo familiar and then I looked at the track title. I hear this song in those trappin in Japan videos
haha so hard to find good background music!
Very cool.. really enjoyed the simplicity of this, yet so effective..... *tips hat sir
Thanks! We reckon you gotta keep schemes simple if you want to army paint.
I've used tamiya for year shit to brush on but best airbrush paints I've used when thinned correctly dry fast too.
It's a dream in the airbrush.
I'd love to see how you would paint white armor!
Coming up very soon!
@@cultofpaint That is very exciting! I want to practice with you pin washing. So gorgeous.
Thanks, Henry. I’d love to see a white paint scheme. I want to do my Death Guard as 30k colours.
White scheme coming very soon. And then we'll get the rest of the heresy series banged out nice and quick.
Great video! What sorcery did you use to get the paint to "draw" by itself when recess highlighting? It was amazing to see!
The sorcery is "capillary action". Check out the linked video during the tutorial and it explains it all in more detail.
@@cultofpaint Watched it, liked it, Subscribed, and heading to Hobby Lobby to get these supplies! Thanks!
At 3:57 In the video you say four to one mix of Matt to gloss. But the video graphic says the opposite. Please which is correct?
More matte
Great tutorial 👍
Would a W&N Burnt Umber oil paint suffice instead of the AK panel liner?
Certainly, you get a slightly different effect from enamels, but oils would still be great.
What was it you mixed the panel liner with? I couldn't make it out at all.
Winsor & Newton Sansador ( artist grade, low odour thinner)
@@cultofpaint legends cheers man, your pin shading looks so clean, hoping it'll do the same for me 😬😬 😂
I bought some Sand and Desert camo but mines grey where as yours looks more brown. Any ideas?
Shake the hell out of it, let it settle, repeat. You should be fine, mines definitely a grey/brown.
Which thinner do you use to thin the ak panel liner? Would the tameya a22 work?
we use Sansodor. any mineral spirit thinner would work.
For the satin varnish would you suggest not using a satin varnish out of the bottle or is this just a way to have one less product? Thanks!
Premixed Satin would be absolutely fine, I just ran out ages ago and make up my own mixes :)
Hello, what is this sansador stuff? Do I need it to panel line?
An odourless thinner for oil and enamel paints.
I noticed that my matte varnish on other minis comes out dusty looking. Are you adding the 1 part gloss varnish to mitigate this?
no we're adding the drop of gloss so it isnt a totally flat finish. Do you spray in a humid environment/is your varnish quite old?
@@cultofpaint no, it's a new bottle of vallejo mecha matte. Perhaps my psi was too high?

This is new lore, it's quite controversial. So far it's only the Bladeguard that have been added to the Deathwing.

Hi. Please check out ZEST-IT solvent. Much nicer than Sansodor, which smell like dust to me. Easy to get one in UK.
