Love this take on Deathwing armour, and the statement about Grimdark being an aesthetic rather than a technique. Experimentation and utilising/discovering new techniques is part of the joy of the hobby for me.
Good points. A lot of things like NMM and dramatic lighting are also not techniques, but a result or effect. How we get there is a matter of experimentation followed by experience. :)
Damn, I don't want you to cut down the fluff of the video. The step by step, full process is what I love about this! It's how I really learn! Maybe have the "main video" short and sweet, and then post the longer ones in a separate channel? Call it Trovarion Deep Cuts or Trovarion Happy Hour, but please, post the longer form!
Big ditto! There's so few long-form painting videos that really help me grow my technique. Having a shortcut with a verbalized description just isn't the same!
Sorry to hear that RUclips isn’t pushing your videos. There’s so much really interesting information and advice in your videos and I sincerely hope that you can continue to make them. All the best!
Thanks! it is pushing most, but the painting videos usually underperform. I don't mean to sound like I blame youtube though, I think I know what the problem is and I just have to change things around a bit :) manly make the videos more precise/shorter for more engagement.
First time I encounter your channel, I see an extremely teaching video on painting deathwing armour, green cloth, decal chipping, basing, sculpting a hood, scratching shoulder pads and shield,...all. Very very good content. Couldn't understand the title yet, though.
What I love about this video (and a lot of your tutorials) is the end result looks absolutely amazing, and also the process looks very achievable and easy to follow. The ‘techniques’ are not overly complicated but I definitely wouldn’t have thought about it by myself Thanks as always!
I'm trying to restart painting after 10 years. I'm not really into speed painting and have the mini just ready to play. It's nice that you show all those technics and explain what it adds and the result is just amazing.
Love the shoulder pads. I’m not sure what it is but there’s something about that look that just hits. You’ve got me thinking about giving it a go. I will say I nearly had a heart attack when you took the knife to the shield, lol. This is the best Dark Angel mini I’ve ever seen.
Love the battle damaged decals! When you first showed off the models, my initial reaction was "OMG, how did he achieve that look?!" You made it so simple, yet so effective
Bro…I’m so happy you exist and are willing to share your knowledge. Thank you man. I know how much effort goes into putting together a video of this hobby. You’re amazing 👊🏽
This was recommended to me, and I subscribed. This is probably the best space marine painting video I’ve ever watched, and the easiest to follow in terms of how you do things and how you explain it. Excellent video
Love the simple act of removing various trim pieces and sculpting a hood. Little things can make a big difference; our conversions don't always have to be super ambitious.
Always wicked looking paint jobs. Love the comments as they make you feel that you can copy and work along with the process. Love the close ips so you can see what’s going on with the brush tip , sponge etc.
Beautiful work. The textured heavy cloth technique alone is worth watching. I really like the older veteran head you used too. That combined with the weathered armour and wargear is a much better fit for The Lion's Guard. Cheers!
Just want to say That since I have started to watch your videos, I have started to change the way I paint. Which is great, I am still learning a lot. Keep up the amazing work, and Thanks for inspiring me.
Okay , I’m blown away . One of , if not the best paint jobs I’ve seen on a space marine . Especially pulling off that creamy white of the death wing and weathering it to perfection . Also so many damn techniques being used ! So many things I want to try out now ! You sir , are a master of your craft and also a terrific teacher . Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills with the world !
Thanks for showing how to make standing GW figures truer to the feeling that comes from the audio CD's and some of the Books! Excellent Educational experience and that's down to yourself !
I absolutely love your work. I'm currently working on a Salamander successor chapter themed around warped, damaged, soot covered armor and ash, and so many of the principles you talk about/introduce are immensely helpful.
Really enjoy your content, just got back into miniature painting and your grimdark styles are very accessible to attempt and enjoyable to complete. It's also great to learn to use different techniques for similar results
Thanks! For indomitus chaplain how would you get the cloth like the box art where it's dirty cream but the bottom has a worn brown hue to it, would it be a glaze or a wash, any help would be great.
Lots of ways to get there - you can layer it up from the brown to a beige and leave the lower parts more brown. Or start from a beige and wash is with browns and let it pool more in the lower areas. Or use glazing, using more opaque layers the further down you go! Thanks a lot for your support!
I often click on to videos but this is the one of the first videos I watched (along with your slapchop and your HH Ultramarine recently, both a similar style to this) the whole way through. For me if you keep adding in tutorials like this, along with the more in-depth/longer videos) I would watch more and that would act as a gateway to being more invested to watch to the longer more in depth vids.
I always enjoy watching your videos because, I feel like I'm learning about painting from a diffent perspective. Your grimdark series is a great example because to me at least you are teaching great techniques but I feel like you're also teaching; intent I want to say I could be using that word wrong but I've learned that placement of colors is just as important as the colors themselves it helps sell the effect your looking for. I've recently found a personal recipe for vertigri and rust and have been enjoying experimenting where the rust and vertigri would occur on my bases I understand why you may have to shorten your videos I hope things even out so your videos get more watch time I love learning something from your videos
Solid video. Really appreciate you explaining your techniques. Bone colored armor has always been a pain for me but I think I wanna give it another shot after watching this.
Man, I'm about to start painting my first minis and watching this makes me think you're a wizard with a brush. I sure hope one day I can get this good at painting. Thanks for showing the techniques!😃
Watching you work is incredible. I could watch you paint all day man. Thanks for sharing your talent and passion with us. You inspire me to grind out hours of painting to reach a level like this.
I loved this video - I felt like I was able to see a lot of the process you used, and in a way that I could take away ideas for my own models and actually know how to implement them. Please keep more videos like this coming!
Great editing to show the bottle of the paint you're using. 90% of my time watching videos is tracking backwards and forward trying to work out the paint that was mentioned for half a second.
This one turned out amazing, gonna pick up my brush again this week to paint some more Black Templars in this grimdark style - That one is still my favorite
That sir, is the best ive seen, absoutely loved it, has given me some ideas and will be trying to replicate a lot of this on my next models, thank you so much,, much love from Australia
Also, the montage/ editing really does well in your videos. Love to see more. It's just sad that our attention capacity is that low, but yeah, it kinda works with your montages
Love this video, it's really engaging and I like this new style too. I always watch your videos all the way through, sometimes twice, but I understand having to play the game to the system. Fully agree that your usual grim dark style doesn't work well here too, but this was an epic adaption and I hope to see more grim dark space marines and other 40k factions from you soon! Thanks again for all your videos and effort.
Cool stuff. This grimdark stuff makes me imagine a chapter that's been somehow stranded on a really rough world for generations or a chapter down on it's luck but too prideful to give up and merge with some others.
The paint work on this is absolutely stunning mate!!!! The weathering to the suit is truly masterful.. i think most of the Marines should look like this from all the heavy battle they go through!! Incredible work on this though my friend!!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If this video is an example of tighter editing I think it worked out great. I also like the direction your painting is taking; the practicality and result are a good balance. Also a bit inspiring to cut away some of the unwanted bling that most models have nowadays. I am running out of oldhammer to paint and I really don't like the amount of stuff that gets in the way on newer models. Thanks for the video.
I thought the brown on the aquilla was a bit too contrasty but in the end it matches with the pigment on the base so well it was really meant to be! Love the technique on the bolter too has to be the most beautiful bolter I’ve ever seen.
Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh, my God. It even has Decal Transfers.
Do you like Huey Lewis and the God emperor of mankind brother?
Love this take on Deathwing armour, and the statement about Grimdark being an aesthetic rather than a technique. Experimentation and utilising/discovering new techniques is part of the joy of the hobby for me.
Good points. A lot of things like NMM and dramatic lighting are also not techniques, but a result or effect. How we get there is a matter of experimentation followed by experience. :)
This ended up being one of the best marine painting videos I've ever watched. The range of techniques, the way you mix paint, it's next level.
came to say the same thing
Came here from North Of The Boarder. Instant subscribe. Love watching people who are so insanely good at their art.
me too
My young daughter says: “You put a lot of work into that and it turned out really good. Well done. You are ridiculously good.”
What is your daughter's name?
Damn, I don't want you to cut down the fluff of the video. The step by step, full process is what I love about this! It's how I really learn!

Completely agree!
Big ditto! There's so few long-form painting videos that really help me grow my technique. Having a shortcut with a verbalized description just isn't the same!
when I say fluff I mean me being on camera or fancy filler shots, etc.
I think allowing the die hards to trade deep knowledge for some money over on patreon is perfect. It's a win for the fan, and for the creator
Does painting tyranids in a grim dark style make any sense?
Sorry to hear that RUclips isn’t pushing your videos. There’s so much really interesting information and advice in your videos and I sincerely hope that you can continue to make them. All the best!

Couldn't understand the title yet, though.
You got good content, the title made you click it. Both parties happy.
What I love about this video (and a lot of your tutorials) is the end result looks absolutely amazing, and also the process looks very achievable and easy to follow. The ‘techniques’ are not overly complicated but I definitely wouldn’t have thought about it by myself
Thanks as always!
I really like the way you display the paint/colour on the side when you are talking about it and using it on the model.
Probably one of the best painting videos I have seen on this platform.
5:49 I agree. Reads like snow interestingly enough.
I'm trying to restart painting after 10 years. I'm not really into speed painting and have the mini just ready to play. It's nice that you show all those technics and explain what it adds and the result is just amazing.

The final mini looks fantastic! I'll be sure to try and use some of the weathering techniques you used with my own miniatures :) Great work!
Beautiful work. The textured heavy cloth technique alone is worth watching. I really like the older veteran head you used too. That combined with the weathered armour and wargear is a much better fit for The Lion's Guard. Cheers!
Love the heavy weathering. This is an effect I have been trying to get down. Your video will be helping me do so. Thanks!
Just want to say That since I have started to watch your videos, I have started to change the way I paint. Which is great, I am still learning a lot. Keep up the amazing work, and Thanks for inspiring me.
This format is awesome. Camera work and cuts are spot on. Such positive advice. Thanx!
Might be the best weathering tutorial i've seen. Congrats.

Looks good! I find painting or observing someone who paints very well very relaxing for the mind.
The shield looks amazing, you did so much with simple decals, it looks like the personal sigil of a medieval knight.
I'm here from the channel North of the Border. This is such a sick sculpture and I'm glad I stuck till the end. Definitely subscribing
Really enjoy your content, just got back into miniature painting and your grimdark styles are very accessible to attempt and enjoyable to complete. It's also great to learn to use different techniques for similar results
I really like how that turned out. And i always watch the whole thing. Love your work man.

First video! You're clearly a super-talented artist but you've made it feel like a noob could achieve this result. Thanks so much!
best painting tutorials on YT. always love to see a new vid from Trov!
Your grimdark series is amazing. For myself, the best advice has been to not be afraid to experiment. Ty so much for sharing
stunning job. absolutely LOVE the tone on the armour
I love the music you use. Also love how dark and weathered the piece came out. Awesome job as always. 👍🏽
The absolute mastery you show while painting this mini is insane. I didnt want the video to end lol.
This is one of the best painting tutorials I have seen on youtube. Thank you!
I always enjoy watching your videos because, I feel like I'm learning about painting from a diffent perspective.

amazing! thanks for sharing these thoughts, means a lot!
This is the first time I've seen sponge "paint chipping" turn out so good. Great work, liked and subbed.
Great video, I think focusing on a few key techniques and moving fast through the rest really help tighten the video.
Even if a prefer long and detailed videos, this one is amazing. Clear, consistent, lots of points explained. Very well made and interesting.
Solid video. Really appreciate you explaining your techniques. Bone colored armor has always been a pain for me but I think I wanna give it another shot after watching this.
Awesome video, gives me a lot of ideas for my Heresy Dark Angels too. Love the music you use for the videos as well, can't beat some synthwave.
Man, I'm about to start painting my first minis and watching this makes me think you're a wizard with a brush. I sure hope one day I can get this good at painting. Thanks for showing the techniques!😃
Huge props! Just found this as a suggestion in my feed. You were a very easy subscribe choice. Keep up the great work!
Watching you work is incredible. I could watch you paint all day man. Thanks for sharing your talent and passion with us. You inspire me to grind out hours of painting to reach a level like this.
Looks great. This is the first time I have seen your channel, so I'll have to check out some more of your videos.
That decal work is mind bending, can;t wait to try it myself.
Love the look of your weathered armor with all the decals
I loved this video - I felt like I was able to see a lot of the process you used, and in a way that I could take away ideas for my own models and actually know how to implement them. Please keep more videos like this coming!
Great editing to show the bottle of the paint you're using. 90% of my time watching videos is tracking backwards and forward trying to work out the paint that was mentioned for half a second.
Your greens in this - both the robes and and metallics - are sublime.
Very nice, deep coloured bone and the weathering. Great paintjob for the best Space Marines, no repenting needed here!
This one turned out amazing, gonna pick up my brush again this week to paint some more Black Templars in this grimdark style - That one is still my favorite
You really really sold me on how to use decals better, unbelievable. Thank you so much!
love the purple shading on the green cloth, great idea
As always to very impressive and helpful. Thanks, Trov!
Looks awesome, loving the more Grim Dark style.
Makes me want to paint your 'The Rogue Robot' in the same style.
That sir, is the best ive seen, absoutely loved it, has given me some ideas and will be trying to replicate a lot of this on my next models, thank you so much,, much love from Australia
Those decals/chipping look so great. I'll be trying this.
I never knew it was possible to create such effect with a sponge, I want to try that too! Great video and great technique!
This has been a great inspiration for the blade guard I have! Thank you 🙏
Dude....that turned out AMAZING! I am just now getting into War Hammer 40k & will purchase my first set tomorrow. I can't wait!
Bud you are awsome. They look soo good. Love to see wot you done with vehicles.
So good!! love the montage of the shield aswell. Great music too
Awesome! Looks simple but fantastic outcome
Awesome video. As usual beautiful work. For me, this video was edited perfectly and I hope that the algorithm responds accordingly!
The shield made me ridiculously happy. I sat here smiling at the process. Amazing
👏🏼 Amazing final result, you never disappoint!
Insane, seeing something like this is just a pure form of art. Im absolutely speachless
Also, the montage/ editing really does well in your videos. Love to see more. It's just sad that our attention capacity is that low, but yeah, it kinda works with your montages
Great tutorial. If the rest of you’re content is this good I’d have no worries about your channel continuing on strong.
Dark Angels were my first 40k army. Haven’t played them since 2008. But this video made me want to dive back in. Beautiful and full of character!
He looks amazing. The battle damage really makes it
Incredible job, very well done. Love the weathering and combat damage
Amazing work like always! I've learned so much from how you build the shades with washes.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing! I think I'll need to dig up an old Marine mini and play around with the grimdark approach.
Amazing work
I like how you use so many different techniques and styles on each mini. Definitely learn the most from your vids.
Looks amazing! really enjoying the different take on take on grimdark
Cool stuff. This grimdark stuff makes me imagine a chapter that's been somehow stranded on a really rough world for generations or a chapter down on it's luck but too prideful to give up and merge with some others.

That's incredible mate.
Thanks for such a wonderful tutorial.
I love the burnt umber washes, they give some great depth and colour, can't wait to try that out.
Hey, my man, great work! I know you focus a lot on conveying a story through your minis and let me tell you this one tells a great and believable one!
Awesome video as usual Trov.
I appreciate your work and wish you all the best.
thank you, that's so kind of you!
Not sure how I have missed your channel but I am glad I found it. You are very talented and am learning a lot from your videos! Thank you!
Holy Hell.
That was Amazing.
I've been playing DeathWing since 4th edition.
Never really much of a painter.
But your Technical Style is BADASS.
Thanks bud!
If this video is an example of tighter editing I think it worked out great. I also like the direction your painting is taking; the practicality and result are a good balance. A long video is the difference between outrageous clickbait and quality. Thanks for showing us your talent and your techniques !
My dude, this looks absolutely amazing.
This was a great video. It really makes me want to start working on my Relictor Space Marines again.
This video is SO good! New sub here, and even though I've been painting for over 20 years I learned a lot from it!
Gotta stay and watch every second for the channel!
