This man, one of the greatest mini painters of our time, sounds embarrassed about using a contrast pain from the pot. Imposter syndrome is real folks. (Richard you're the goat)
@@gregorysmillie2008 sure I didn't mean to denigrate his technique, but it's like in sports, professional athletes make it look so easy you can forget how difficult it actually is. Same here, it's impressive because it looks so easy.
For anyone watching this in April 2024 - the current GW mini of the month is a deathwing knight which would be a great model to try this technique on. SUCH a cool model, and it's free!!!
Been trying to figure out this look and style for a long time. So glad I found this! My previous Deathwing recipe was Rakarth > Agrax > Ushabi, but yours is truly the style I've wanted all along.
First clip that convinced me to this bone color of dark angels. I watch a lot of painting channels but your approach somehow gives life to these characters. Well done! Definitely a top tier job. And great guide for newbies like me!
"THE RICHARD GRAY SCALE" - Zero (0) to Richard Gray. The scale to judge/ compare all miniatures to. There may be others that meet the "Richard Gray" level but the Richard Gray is definitely the top level. Thanks for sharing all these for how great they are and for your conversation.
Wow mate, that looks really aweseome! I can barely dream of painting in any kind of this! I am a mini painter for like...3 years and yet i am just a fraction of the way which you went...simply amazing!
6:52 actually love Black Templar Contrast. It's the one I use the most. Basically an off-black with a green tone. Like to use over my texture paints to create a dark surface amd build up from there.
10:05 About the Metal Color paints. I started to add a drop of Vallejo Metal Varnish to them. What it does it makes them flow a little bit less and also protects the paint a bit since you generally don't varnish metalics after that.
Richard start-of-tutorial: "You'll want to very carefully do this with your brush." Richard mid-tutorial: (checks time) "F*ck it." 😂 (Awesome job - thanks for sharing)!
33:50 I have scraped physical texture from a model ones. Had to repaint that part though. Interest to see if you are careful and like you said use sanding paper with a high grit.
I don't understand how you manage to blend the colours so smoothly. Every time I try to do anything with ivory/sandy-colour paints it ends up looking super grainy, rough and sudden with every brush stroke clearly visible. And if I think them down it just turns into a tide mark liquid. No such issues with any other colour.
You're an inspiration as always. Excellent DW Terminator! I do believe that Leviathan box should come with a transfer sheet that includes some Dark Angel transfers though. I have seen it in the promos.
19:45 I am with you Rich, would do exactly the same. Spotted them before you brought them up. My brain just sees imperfections very quickly. Not always en good thing, but it is what it is
Hey mate, this looks so awesome, the best i've ever seen ! I wanna replicate this, but dont have an airbrush. Do you think it is possible to do it the same as your other models, with a big dry bursh stipple very thin paint on there to get your highlights in the right place. If so, what primer and what color to stipple with would you recommend ? cheers in advance
Of all the warhammer miniatures painter videos I've seen, finally someone shows how to paint these scratches and use marks. In other videos this part is always skipped Thank you very much. One question I have, since my english is not so good now, which two colors do you use to paint the scratches ?
Amazing tuto as usual Richard. Qq please. As I am planning to use deathwing models for games, what is your advice in the varnish step at the end? Spray all the model in Satin varnish? (Due to space marine armor)
Hi Richard! I had great success with my first attempt at this method. I'm looking to expand it to vehicles, notable the Repulsor Ex, and the Redemptor Dread. Do you recommend any alternate or more efficient ways to achieve this on larger models?
Richard, what are your rules for when and how much. You edge highlight? This model is amazing and didn’t seem to get much edge highlighting. Is that true? Why? I am a newbie and all I near is edge highlighting helps define the shapes of your miniature. When should I not be as concerned about it?
You touched on this in the video, but I think the majority of us probably will not spend this much time on a single miniature. The result is really beautiful, but if you had to replicate this on an entire army, it would probably take months or years. What I'm really curious about is how a pro painter would approach painting an entire army or squad. What techniques to use, what will achieve the best finish in the shortest amount of time, etc. Would you have any interest in doing something like this? I think that would be a very relatable video, and to me at least, very instructive. Regardless, exceptional video.
is it weird that I'm most impressed by his wet palette? I've tried to pre-thin paints into pools like this before and the paint separates so fast. I'm really curious to know if there's any other additives being used to keep the paint nice and wet at the perfect consistency without ever separating.
Amazing paint job! Question. If I don’t have an airbrush what’s the best way for me to apply the initial basecoats? Prime black, basecoat xv-88 then later up to morghast bone?
Check out colourforge for colourmatched spray cans. Or just use a big fat round drybrush and work up. That's what I do and it works well if you do the damp drybrush technique as favoured by artistopus
So today I found out that Richard Gray uses the plastic brush protector cap to keep his paint pots open, the same way I sometimes do. I think I technically just became a better painter? 😶

Yea... mine probably wont look like that in the end...
I just feel like you are working against the clock with these GW washes. Just use Enamel or oil washes, then you don't have the staining issue. You can remove it as you like.
This man, one of the greatest mini painters of our time, sounds embarrassed about using a contrast pain from the pot.
Imposter syndrome is real folks.
(Richard you're the goat)
What blows my mind every time is how easy it looks. No crazy tool or technique, just simple brush work, yet the result is stunning.
Alot of it is actually technique. He has amazing brush control. Good luck repeating his style as a beginner.
@@gregorysmillie2008 sure I didn't mean to denigrate his technique, but it's like in sports, professional athletes make it look so easy you can forget how difficult it actually is. Same here, it's impressive because it looks so easy.
There's nothing 'simple' about painting like this lol
@@WardenOfTerra simple technique, not simple execution
I mean he uses an airbrush - some consider that a tool
Best looking deathwing I have ever seen. Incredible!
Thank you ❤

Seriously best terminator paint job I've ever seen. Skill so far above where I'm at now, it's motivated me to get better. Thanks for making this

The whole miniature is amazing. But man... that battledamage is just perfect!
Gorgeous job. Amazing the smoothness without using an airbrush! Congratulations on it!

This video made me start my own Dark Angels army. Awesome painjob, you're amazing!
I am blown away by this. It turned out so good!!
You, sir, are incredibly talented and it's a joy to watch your video of this superb Terminator😊
Really good weathering

Yeah……. Not sure best painter of 40k needs advice.
Absolutely amazing result. You’ve done an amazing job!
your painting is legendary, you should enter golden daemon. great work keep it up.
hahahaha, bit of tongue in cheek? :P
Got a set of classic deathwing boys that are going to get this work up. Thanks Richard! Exemplary work as always.
This is by far the most badass painted Deathwing i have ever seen mate. Holy hell the armor damage looks insane.
Your NMM on Dante is just mind boggling.
That basic airbrush and wash look… I am stealing that for sure.
Wow ... just wow ! O.o Great piece of art !
Would you ever consider going to adepticon and teaching a class? Youre incredible! And watching you has completely changed how I paint models.
Outrageously good. What an inspiration! Thanks for sharing, Richard.

Looks great. I have never used both real metallics and NMM on the same model but it looks good here.
Hello friend, greetings from Mexico. Your way of painting is brutal. I would like to see your work with the thousand sons.
Fantastic figurine. Best battle damage.
Other paint jobs have a coloured plastic look, but yours really makes you believe the armour is made out of ceramite.
OMG this is gonna be so good! Will you also do a Tyranid how to paint? please? pretty please? 😁
Beautiful job !
Absolutely beautiful
Sub'ed! I really like your detailed tutorial style, it adds a lot! Thanks!!
Incredible, as allways

Gorgeous
It's probably the camera but the XV88 shadows look much cooler on video than than they do irl. Irl they look much warmer.

I'd *love* to see what this technique looks like for a blueish off-white armor.
Holy smokes the NMM gold on Dante's armour! 35 seconds in and jaw allready dropped to the floor.
Amazing paint job, canyou make a video how to paint ravenwing troops?
At the 10 minute mark it already looked better than most people's finished models 😆😆
Fantastic! Was wondering what brushes you use? Need them excellent points for this!
Incredible. What's the idea behind using morgast bone as the base highlight instead of zandri?
Dude holy shit - your Dante... You consistently blow my fucking mind lol

Is there any way you can do the new Belial model? I'm looking for inspiration and your one of the best miniature painters out there.
Richard. What a fantastic video; I love your technique and very accessible presentation style! By the way, what brushes do you use?

Incredibile work! can you please tell me which brushes are you using for details ? that tip looks incredible
looks great. if you dont have an air brush can you get away with an over brush of the bone color?
AWESOME
Amazing video. What are your thoughts on simply priming the model in a dark brown instead of black?

I'll be happy with the 35 mins mark quality :D
This is insanely good. Any chance of getting the ratios of medium to darkoath flesh contrast?
I eyeballed it, but try around 2:1 Medium to contrast.

My guess is flow improver. It emulsifies things and helps the paint come off the brush by lowering surface tension. You can also use soap.
