I like them. However I feel some strategically placed bits of black (the belt buckle and a quick oil panel lining) would really help break up the blue a bit, take like 5 minutes and help the model pop overall.
Just a big black wash after the basecoat but before the zenithal steps would make some of those deeper recesses really stand out and increase the model contrast.
Yeah but 5 minutes per marine is about an extra 2 hours worth of work. I would say if he was just getting them combat ready, the panel lining isnt really needed here
The best thing about painting minis fast is that you can always go back and add more details, add more highlights, add more weathering. I do that with my battleready squads. After a few games I'll go back and add some scratches, some tattoos, scars or decals. It tells a story and makes me appreciate that one Squad even more.
The best approach to painting a squad fast should be to have "Daryl" paint them. "Paint hard, paint fast, no fear in this dojo".... We need a new Daryl video to watch 100 times instead of watching everyone elses Leviathan painting tutorials... The terminators look great! The way you painted the helmet was amazing.
I had just started making and painting my first Warhammer 40K black legion squad before I watched this vid. Before this they sucked. Now they look way better. Thank you.
looks like GW gave the greenlight! Lots of vids to watch today, and who better to start with than Ninjon! Should see lots of termies today from those who have been anxious to get them. I honestly cant wait for custom painted Nids that will be flooding the YT scene. Yo that box is dope seeing all those different painted termies on the side of it like that. And cool the models come with premade bases for beginners and those looking to get these quickly on the table
It's always great to hear the thought process that goes into this stuff. Thanks for all the videos, and for coming to TMX and teaching! It was a thrill :)
The segment pertaining to which areas received the most focus was incredibly insightful. Thanks for that! Also, using a circular lazy Susan for the spinning glamor shot, I appreciate that.
Honestly wish there was a dedicated video to using Pigment Powders which also went over whether to use a varnish or setting agent or to leave it. I sometimes feel that a lot of the painting channels don't do it because having a painted model with pigment powder is enough for them. I've no idea though if not using a setting agent makes sense for models that will then be used in 40k, with all the requisite bumpy travel, and model holding/movement/knocking over.
The color scheme for the base and eggs is the scheme I use for my Nids army, which is hilarious, and I love it! Love how that shading looks on these termies! Super cool!
Can't wait to get my box! I always like your quick takes on the process of painting minis helps me get a good start on feeling like I dont suck at Painting!
I'm going to try this with a purple primer to see if it'll put some more contrast on the armor. I think that helmet looks fantastic with that blue shadow and the contrast made it pop. The blue armor needed a bit more contrast after seeing that helmet, and switching to purple may be the right answer since it just replaces a single step.
Last week and this week’s videos have been badass. This is the balance I am after with my current available hobby time. Also thanks for using the airbrush and not apologizing for it. I’m loving my cheap Amazon airbrush/compressor setup thanks to you. Wish I hadn’t waited as long as I did to get it, and it’s great to see ways to use it.
I always remove part of the end of the peg - the reason is that if you don't - there can be air pressure inside the tube bit from how tight the join is, which wants to force the pieces apart.
If I could add an extra tip: sometimes the length of the peg and the length of the hole it’s designed to fit into are so precisely matched on these push-fit minis that adding glue can make the peg not fit all the way in, causing a gap between parts. I recommend snipping a half-millimeter off the tips of the pegs if you’re going to use plastic cement like that.
Those look great! I love how focusing energy on key points it’s possible to get a bunch of minis painted and looking awesome up close and from a distance!!! Keep it up!
I timed myself from prime to tabletop on some Battletech miniatures and got about the same time....1hr 12min. Using the airbrush helped you with the lovely shades of blue.
Good video, i REALLY appreciate you showing some actual process with the airbrush, alot of videos can be quite demoralising just seeing the footage of the fancy airbrush flawlessly spraying the model with a perfect finish first try. The blue basecoat working as the shadow for the helmets looks absolutely awesome for such an economical step, (i just wish my marines were blue) and they still great without the typical marine panel lining.
I just want to tell you Ninjon that you are my favorite mini painting youtuber! Your videos are really inspiring and made me rethink how I approach my ways of working with my miniatures and made the whole process more fun and anjoable. Keep the good work!
I never would’ve thought to keep the blue on the helmets and transition to a new color from that, but it’s a pretty cool effect. I like the color scheme of the head dude’s helmet-red transitioning from blue with the bright eyes. It has sweet 90s backlight/laser tag vibes to it. I’d love to see a whole figure painted that way.
I love how the white helmets turned, really nice touch the transition to blue shade. I would still spend a couple more hours on them to get some elements like the belts, air vents and joints in a different colour so it's not almost entirely blue.
3.07 that is almost exactly how I clean my airbrush between colors. One thing that I have learned to avoid is backflowing the airbrush because it causes paint to get into the body of the airbrush and will dry there and can cause the needle to not move as smooth anymore.
Awesome video as always, loads of tips and another reason why i just paint and not play, painting helps ne fight the black dogs of depression. Keep them coming ninjon.
Appreciate the focus on getting through the squad in a playable, quality level rather than trying to make the squad look like box art. I always set out to get through a squad (or even a single model) and then end up getting lost in the weeds and lose interest. This video helps focus on a good combo of speed and effectiveness.
Your video editing style and vibes never fail to amaze me. Every video has a different feeling to it and I think you may have the most diverse mini painting channel on RUclips. Love the content, keep it up.
Just around 5 hours in and you’re rocking these Terminators better than GW. Looking so good and authentic, really can feel some heartwarming battlefield vibes here.
Your skills are amazing! Your tutorials are very helpful. I am a Battletech Player. I would love to see you apply your skills to some Battletech Mechs. I think they would be awesome! Your basing skills and painting skills could create some mech master pieces. As a teacher who uses Gamification in their instruction, I loved your call out to Gamification! 😊
Fun video! Really enjoyed it, especially since I'm working through my first army and it's all on point for keeping my motivation through this marathon.
Anyway to get a list of the blue's you used. I've never tried a space Marines but plan to get this box. I like your technique but not sure on what cors to use to get a nice vibrant color.
nice work and a really good guide for someone trying to get battle ready quickly. I'll stick the 'contrast over white' spray effect into my own arsenal as that worked really well! One thing, I feel like the eggs on the base were too bright/white. They pulled my eye away from the models as they were the largest bit of bright on the model. It might be worth pulling them back with some dull brown/green so they still show but don't pull the eye as much.
Cracking video, the termies came out great! Always love a painting efficiency tutorial. 👍 Enjoyment enhanced by watching this with a G&T on a Saturday night - I was rock and roll once, honest...
Great video. Interesting to watch Richard Greys video after this one where he paints the leviathan terminator to the next level of finish. Blew my mind.
Brilliant video everytime you do a video like this and your orc video really helps me push through with my models and make them look as good as possible while not taking such a huge amount of time !!
another trick you can use to get models with pegs and sockets to slide easier that I learned from building and painting gundam models is to cut the peg diagonally at an angle. that lets it actually has some room to move around in the socket and you can get it into the precise right position, and you don't have to fight the friction of the parts. Only downside is that you can't just pushfit the model anymore, though that won't be an issue if you glue all your seams properly. hope this helps someone!
3:00 get a cheap 1.00 spray bottle and fill with water. has enough force in the Jet setting to clean out the cup in seconds for quick color changes. changed the game with airbrushing! do it over a garbage can* not a jug
nice video many thanks, please were did you get your dark wood paint racks over your shoulder please. also how do you stop pigment powered rubbing off when you play please
Very impressed with your brush skills, hitting those edges just right, first time. 👍 They look almost glowing 😅 I would probably drop some Nuln Oil into select crevices, like the vents on their backs or the armour joint for a bit more grimdark ™️
They look fantastic - the only thing I would do differently is a sepia or wash or something to dull down the eggs on the base they draw a lot of attention away from the model, however, this is miles better than what I can produce! Great content as always.
The white with the blue shadow is class, will copy that technique ! Not sure about that red helm blue shadow tho ... Might basecoat mine with a brown first or something
Love your stuff. Keep it up. Like your humor. I am to much of a perfectionist and seeing your 5 models done well keeps me motivated. I can spend 3 hrs on 1 model sometimes... which brings me down. But seeing your technique and quality helps me speed things up. Keep up the good work!
I love the effect that the shared blue shadows give and I think I'll be trying that in my next project. How would you approach black areas in such a paint style, though?
Whenever I paint bases, I make sure any foreign objects on the ground have some of the ground color in them because everything on the ground gets dirty, so things start to blend in over time realistically, so I always try and apply that to my paint jobs.
Hi jon was wondering how whould i go about doing my word bearers terminators like your space marines they look so battle worn what 3 Colours would I use To achieve it As in what color for the darker areas The next colour obviously would be word bear obviously would be word bearers red and then a brighter red?thanks for reading
I like them.
However I feel some strategically placed bits of black (the belt buckle and a quick oil panel lining) would really help break up the blue a bit, take like 5 minutes and help the model pop overall.
Yeah, at least black in the undersuit
Just a big black wash after the basecoat but before the zenithal steps would make some of those deeper recesses really stand out and increase the model contrast.
@@roryevans5032 gloss varnish + oil wash could've done a lot with not that long time wasted
Yeah but 5 minutes per marine is about an extra 2 hours worth of work. I would say if he was just getting them combat ready, the panel lining isnt really needed here

I seriously love how these look, well done. love the little bit of blue shadow on the helmets.
"...half built and unpainted in our closet 3 years from now..." I feel personally attacked.
The best approach to painting a squad fast should be to have "Daryl" paint them. "Paint hard, paint fast, no fear in this dojo"....

I'm now a working man and watching quick but effective techniques like this is inspiring. Thank you John!

Love how that shading looks on these termies!
Super cool!
I timed my Rumbleslam Minis in January. It was fun and very rewarding getting a bunch of models done in „short/average“ time.
Your Ts look amaizing.
Can't wait to get my box! I always like your quick takes on the process of painting minis helps me get a good start on feeling like I dont suck at Painting!

That’s how I did mine they turned out pretty good
Actually really dig this format. Maybe throw a few of these vlog style videos in a month. We'd all be stoked with more content.
Loved the move on white highlights with a light blue, looks awesome and going to steal it!
I always remove part of the end of the peg - the reason is that if you don't - there can be air pressure inside the tube bit from how tight the join is, which wants to force the pieces apart.
The helmet on the Sgt turned out really cool! Kinda trippy looking. Love it!
Great tip on putting a little bit of cement on the peg for the push fits! Thanks for sharing!

Gorgeous Ultramarines! I don't often like them, but these are super super cool!
I really like it for an hour per model. You have those looking good for the table and if you ever wanted to come back to refine, you always could.
I was planning on using the exact same paints for the blue - glad to see they are working well!
I just want to tell you Ninjon that you are my favorite mini painting youtuber! Your videos are really inspiring and made me rethink how I approach my ways of working with my miniatures and made the whole process more fun and anjoable. Keep the good work!
Liked the look when first put white on the way it circles soreading put looks like its being hot by a beam of light from a glass window or somthing
I think a 5 minute per model panel lining of Payne's grey or a burnt umber would be the cherry on top to these. They do look great as is though!
Hurrah - A Space Hulk Squad painting video - top marks - always enjoyable!!
I never would’ve thought to keep the blue on the helmets and transition to a new color from that, but it’s a pretty cool effect. I am really liking the mid-stage high contrast white technique. I will try it.
Love seeing you work and I enjoy your cinicism and self deprication!

Ninjon gets extra points over Squidmar for drilling out the barrels. :)
Well done as always. I can't wait to get stuck in when this box comes out.
John expressed the frustration perfectly that we all feel when we start to get drained. Well done mate
Just around 5 hours in and you’re rocking these Terminators better than GW.

I always end up learning something from these videos.

I don't even play Battletech and I'd like to see more getting painted
Fantastic work! They turned out great
These came out great! I'd enjoy seeing you do more of those "realistic scope" army painting projects, rather than big-ass showcase works.
These are so beautiful. You make it look effortless!
They look amazing.
The one thing I *wish* they had were chevrons on the powerfists for that nostalgic throwback, but love them all the same. :)
I don't think I've seen chevrons on termie powerfists. That sounds pretty cool
The dark gold looks really great! I need that paint! 😃
Fun video!
Really enjoyed it, especially since I'm working through my first army and it's all on point for keeping my motivation through this marathon.
This is definitely a great work flow I might try it on my moonlit ravenguard
Great video, definitely can be overwhelming quickly with a new box set. I like to do the same 1 squad at a time
I really like the blue shadow on the white that’s very cool
Looks great, Jon. Very vibrant.
Awesome looking paint job, Loving seeing this box getting painted up!!!!
Great video. Love this style of pairing. I think they turned out great.
I feel like a quick black line with oils would have done them wonders especially on the back vents but I get time was key
Came for the metaphysics of dumping. Did not leave disappointed.
Well played, Jon. Well played, indeed.
Cracking video, the termies came out great! Always love a painting efficiency tutorial. 👍 Enjoyment enhanced by watching this with a G&T on a Saturday night - I was rock and roll once, honest...
I love the blues you used. I didn't catch both of them. Can you list what you're using?
I hhave a full size bucket, I just put the whole air brush in it and pull the trigger for awhile, swishing it around. Totally clean for next color.
I wasn't sure about leaving the blue on the helmets, but it ended up being a super cool effect.
On the Sergeant it looked like he ran out of time and gave up.
Great video. Interesting to watch Richard Greys video after this one where he paints the leviathan terminator to the next level of finish. Blew my mind.
Slaying the grey right now actually. Woot! A shroom warrior turtle from by Dragon Trapper’s Lodge. Very cool mini.
Brilliant video everytime you do a video like this and your orc video really helps me push through with my models and make them look as good as possible while not taking such a huge amount of time !!
Your videos are quite relaxing
LOL! “I finally got done with the little detail bullshit”
I love it!
I'm so glad they didn't mess with the terminators too much, the helmet looked even cooler! Great video man, love your work.

Im working on some Menoth exemplar bastions from warmachine and they are basically like high fantasy terminators. Great job btw.
Damn the vibrancy of those colors make me love smurfes again

nice video many thanks, please were did you get your dark wood paint racks over your shoulder please. also how do you stop pigment powered rubbing off when you play please
That's cool you should paint each of the pieces of the model in a video for each piece of the model finishing the series with doing the base
The blue shadow on the helemts works so well!
Very impressed with your brush skills, hitting those edges just right, first time. 👍
They look almost glowing 😅
I would probably drop some Nuln Oil into select crevices, like the vents on their backs or the armour joint for a bit more grimdark ™️
Excellent result!
Starting the video with "It´s finally here" while all of us are still waiting for the preorder and then have to wait another 2 weeks for it to arrive.
They look fantastic - the only thing I would do differently is a sepia or wash or something to dull down the eggs on the base they draw a lot of attention away from the model, however, this is miles better than what I can produce! Great content as always.
This is a such a great and I formative video! Well done!
The white with the blue shadow is class, will copy that technique !
Not sure about that red helm blue shadow tho ... Might basecoat mine with a brown first or something
Rly like your work and philosophy. Nice paint job on the termies, would like to see you take on some soulblight models.
Very nice and clean. But I have a question: How to you stick the pigment you used? There is a varnish step we didn't saw or you just slap it? Thanks
Imagine giving them an Oil wash too😱
That would really make them even more Kapow!!!
I am looking to do this with Blood Angels, what AK recipe do you suggest? I think Minium or Rust for the Base, and what lighter red should I go for?
Love your stuff. Keep it up. Like your humor. I am to much of a perfectionist and seeing your 5 models done well keeps me motivated. I can spend 3 hrs on 1 model sometimes... which brings me down. But seeing your technique and quality helps me speed things up. Keep up the good work!

Anyone else genuinely love the somewhat derisive way Ninjon refers to links, liking, and subscribing?
The old lore said the crux on the shoulder is gold as it was infused with a shard of the emperor's armour but looks cool in white
Thanks, Ninjon! You're the goat.
