If anyone is wondering why the game was removed from Steam, here's the short version: The game had an easter egg with a meme making fun of the president of China, Xi Jinping, and people became so angry that they review bombed the game and destroyed the ratings. The easter egg was removed, the developers apologized, and have said the game will return after a quality check. So, no, nothing big, just some anger over a meme involving Winnie-the-Pooh and the Chinese president. Go figure.
Pretty sure they didn't intend to have the Winnie the Pooh meme in. I've heard it was supposed to be a placeholder poster, but they forgot to actually change it.
It was more than just that, they name the cult to make fun of the Chinese loving people and the girl American loving, so that doesn't sit too well with the Chinese gamers, and they started a boycott.
@@Choppasama One of the studio's major investor is from China, so I'm sure they're happy their R&D money ends up pissing off their major customer base and their government too...
Jack! The are lots of Taiwanese-culture based background knowledge that offer subtext and depth to the game. The translation is also at times a little bit off/lacking in context of the culture. Hope this helps: --"fish sprinkles" dish is actually a common delicacy in Taiwan. It's steamed white fish with green onions, usually with soy sauce as a light soup base and ginger/shallots on top. It's delicious, don't knock it til you try it :P --Eating seafood/fish is a huge part of the culture, and fish specifically (the red arowana) symbolizes prosperity and wealth. The color red ALSO symbolizes fortune, so a red fish is supposed to be very lucky. The culture in general is superstitious, so there are lots of other symbols/motifs scattered throughout the game. --When the mother in the beginning says that the father shouldn't talk to the principal because "kids fall" all the time, the implication is that her daughter is being bullied by her classmates. In asian cultures, there is a LOT of respect towards "mentors" aka teacher figures. Because of that, parents never try to "fight the teacher" or complain to teachers. If it is the word of your child against the word of a teacher, the parents will tend to side with the word of the teacher. --the chirping bird door bell is actually VERY common, at least in my experience in Taiwan. My grandparents still use their chirping doorbell. (Idk how long they've had it for--I'm 24, and they've had it since I was born, probably). --I've already seen this mentioned in other comments, but the game was removed from Steam in large part because Chinese gamers were very unhappy with the symbolism of the Chinese president being compared to Winnie the Pooh. I'm not going to get into the politics of this because it's large and complex, but TL;DR : the game wasn't removed because it was too scary, it was removed because it was accused of siding with Taiwan's independence movement. (Which is, tbh, not unsimilar to the IRA when Ireland was trying to break from England.) Unrelated note: holy hell, this game made me feel like I was literally back in Taiwan, in my grandparents' apartment. Everything from the red dipper by the bathtub to the 1980s style tiles in the kitchen to the white drape over the black piano...the developers did a great job! The story also is so layered and nuanced, and quite melancholy and sad. It's so lovely, and I hope they put it back on Steam because I'd love to play it myself!
Want to expand on the information OP provided: - "Fish sprinkles" is not only common in Taiwan, many Chinese in Southeast-Asia region also love to eat this dish. The fish is normally steamed while top with different variety of vegetable/sauce such as ginger or "assam" style (commonly seen in Malaysia and Singapore) - "Red arowana" is a type of fish normally put as display in Asian/Chinese household as a sign of prosperity. Other than red, "golden arowana" is also another well known species in Southeast-Asia. These fishes is so rare and expensive that they always sell at the range from few hundred to around few thousands USD (depending on their size and colour). Hope these information is interesting to Jack and others!
did u just create a freaking PowerPoint in the comments.?🤒🤒🤒😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 ... okay but all jokes aside, kudos to you for doin this, I applaud you.... I’m impressed.....
YES! I am half Taiwanese and some of the things that Jack didn't get surprised me until I realized only my family did that xD this game really made me hungry for firepot tho :)

@@starman825 it also had a double entendre between Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien which basically amounts to a "yo mama" joke. A small background for you Jack, the brewing wine you saw is called "Daughter Red" (女兒紅), it is a traditional custom. People start brewing the wine since the day a little girl is born, and open it later to share with family and friends during their daughters' wedding in future. It's basically a sign of blessing and wishing for good fortune.
25:20 the reason why there's a 4 candle is that the Chinese word for four sounds like the word for death-- it's the same for Korean and Japanese and a handful of other languages... 9 might be there because it sounds like "eternal/long-lasting" in Chinese... the candles themselves could be saying "eternal death".
9 and 4 are both the numbers of death. The four candles, however, usually represent the four corners of the world in which has four rulers that judge human's worth in life. It's usually performed by shamans that want to succeed in traveling to hell.
I remember a day when I got up in the morning and went into my bathroom and suddenly I only saw static. I where blind for a few minutes while I heard a loud beeping in my ears. I thought my head was going to explode. I felt dizzy and had to sit down. I went to sleep again and after that it went away and never returned. Dunna wtf it was.
Incase anyone else is wondering; The game got removed from Steam because some people got offended and review bombed it on steam. Why? Because the game had a reference to a few year old meme/joke about the chinese president resembling Winnie The Pooh. (Fun fact, china also banned a Winnie The Pooh movie due to it) People are so infinitely smart these days, ffs.
Sarcasm and also the Chinese government revoked the publishing licenses of the company effectively killing the company so we will never see a game from them ever again...

This is the first time in a while that I actually jumped from a spook in the game. It was right in the beginning, when the lil girl ran toward the character. Ahaha yeehaw
pretty sure why it was removed from Steam was because of it having a joke regarding Xi being Winnie the pooh and it got review bombed by those living in the mainland because the studio is based in ROC(Republic of China) otherwise known as Taiwan. It's pretty said because it's a good game.
Thanks for this comment haha. I wondering if it was a Taiwanese game because I was 99.9% sure the accent wasn’t from the mainland. Didn’t sound Malaysian chinese either. Sounded Taiwanese or singaporean chinese but the traditional characters gave it away. About the winnie the pooh joke, what’s new... Overly sensitive and ultranationalistic mainlanders demanding that everyone plays by their rules 🙄.

Just finally watching this and decided to count the frames that it takes the girl at 7:20 to reach the player. There are some duplicate frames in there, which makes me think either the game or the capture lagged ever so slightly when doing that, but (when counting the duplicates) it took exactly 11 frames (at 60 fps) for her to go from a standstill to being past the player. That's less than 1/5 of a second. Shit's damn quick.

I think you should read a little bit about Chinese/Taiwanese superstitious stuffs. I think it will make you understand the game more deeply. Just the house designing and funiture placements triggered me so much 🥶 everything in the house is leading to unlucky, family relationship getting worse and death. In East Asian (or Chinese influence) superstitious, if you lived in a house like this your life would be destroyed. And it would be a miracle that nobody died in a house like this...
Hey sir as a chinese myself i am interested and wish to hear more of your explanation. I knew a little bit about fengshui but your take on the house is very interesting, hope to hear from you soon.
Wayward Llama one example is the doors (front door leading to the kitchen door). Perfectly aligned doors are incredibly bad luck and avoided in houses. Also the clock could symbolize “giving a clock” which is also really bad luck in Chinese superstition (don’t give Chinese people clocks as gifts as it symbolizes bidding someone farewell on their deathbed)
hey i was wondering if you could link me to places that could explain these things my favourite thing in cultures is learning about all their superstitions in france we have things like don’t break your bread upside down, never bring 13 to a table, if you want a baby girl seek an owl, never light 3 cigarettes with the same match
The game got pulled from Steam not because it was too spooky but because it had a Winnie the Pooh meme that included Chinese President Xi Jinping that was not taken well. The devs apologized and said they would put it back up after a quality check.

@@CynicalScientist261 it's not "us" pandering to the Chinese. It's the Taiwanese developers having to censor their game because they can't offend Xi Jinping...
Ok good so someone else knew that I was going to comment and got the reference right away. Idk y but I forget the name of that game it reminds me of pin ball but not as fun. Hope you have a good rest of your day.
The background is set at 80s in Taiwan. The doorbell is a really old thing, but it did exist and sounded really like that. And about the removal from steam, some contents thought to be easter eggs was found by players, and that was the so called "Xi JinPing Winnie the Pooh" thing. There are lots of speculations made by Chinese people after this issue. The game also got review bombed by Chinese net people (most of the negative reviews were posted by players with playing time shorter than 0.5 hours, and some people think they used the "2 hours refund policy" to drop the review bomb). The developer has given the apology and reasonable explanation said that was totally an unintentionally accident. The game developer claimed they temporarily remove the game for improving some shutdown issues found, and they hope people can calm down from the issue, no more unnecessary speculations. Anyway, the background story is worth noting. Poor Meishin. Btw, I love Winne the Pooh.

If anyone is wondering why the game was removed from Steam, here's the short version:
The game had an easter egg with a meme making fun of the president of China, Xi Jinping, and people became so angry that they review bombed the game and destroyed the ratings.
It's more than that, the publisher for this game had their business license revoked in China because of this. Censorship, man.
They did only say that it was the short version. But the extra info is appreciated
@@Choppasama One of the studio's major investor is from China, so I'm sure they're happy their R&D money ends up pissing off their major customer base and their government too...

FISHIE SPRINKS

Frinkles
@@forgor2023 frinkles indeed
Jack! The are lots of Taiwanese-culture based background knowledge that offer subtext and depth to the game. The translation is also at times a little bit off/lacking in context of the culture. Hope this helps:
--"fish sprinkles" dish is actually a common delicacy in Taiwan. It's steamed white fish with green onions, usually with soy sauce as a light soup base and ginger/shallots on top. It's delicious, don't knock it til you try it :P
--Eating seafood/fish is a huge part of the culture, and fish specifically (the red arowana) symbolizes prosperity and wealth.
(Which is, tbh, not unsimilar to the IRA when Ireland was trying to break from England.)
Unrelated note: holy hell, this game made me feel like I was literally back in Taiwan, in my grandparents' apartment.
As both of my parents are from Taiwan, I appreciate the cultural explanations for this game!
Want to expand on the information OP provided:
- "Fish sprinkles" is not only common in Taiwan, many Chinese in Southeast-Asia region also love to eat this dish. The fish is normally steamed while top with different variety of vegetable/sauce such as ginger or "assam" style (commonly seen in Malaysia and Singapore)
- "Red arowana" is a type of fish normally put as display in Asian/Chinese household as a sign of prosperity. Other than red, "golden arowana" is also another well known species in Southeast-Asia. These fishes is so rare and expensive that they always sell at the range from few hundred to around few thousands USD (depending on their size and colour).
Hope these information is interesting to Jack and others!

A small background for you Jack, the brewing wine you saw is called "Daughter Red" (女兒紅), it is a traditional custom. People start brewing the wine since the day a little girl is born, and open it later to share with family and friends during their daughters' wedding in future. 9 and 4 are both the numbers of death. The four candles, however, usually represent the four corners of the world in which has four rulers that judge human's worth in life. It's usually performed by shamans that want to succeed in traveling to hell.

That's less than 1/5 of a second. Shit's damn quick.

This game was removed because of Winnie the Pooh meme, which is related to Chinese President Xi. As a Chinese ''illegally'' watching Jack's channel, I feel that some of us are too politically sensitive. Anyway, I am very happy that Jack can make the video of this game because it has been completely banned in the Chinese network due to political reason. :(
I see that you also "illegally" enjoyed Doki Doki Literature Club! Incredible game that is. Hope the Chinese Special Forces don't kick your door down! :p
Lol you mean the president right? Cuz he's the only one bothered by the meme.

Wayward Llama
one example is the doors (front door leading to the kitchen door). Perfectly aligned doors are incredibly bad luck and avoided in houses. Also the clock could symbolize “giving a clock” which is also really bad luck in Chinese superstition (don’t give Chinese people clocks as gifts as it symbolizes bidding someone farewell on their deathbed)
I too want to know more!
So litteraly if you don't know Chinese symbolism you won't understand the game.... Grate
hey i was wondering if you could link me to places that could explain these things my favourite thing in cultures is learning about all their superstitions in france we have things like don’t break your bread upside down, never bring 13 to a table, if you want a baby girl seek an owl, never light 3 cigarettes with the same match
The design is reminding me a bit of layers of fear
i thought i was the only one!
toby womack nope Sean said it himself apparently

And the loop has the P.T. vibes.
Didn't think about that but, yes, I agree with you. 👍
Watching this whole thing is really a door into Jack's mind, he just says the most random shit, and yet it's SO entertaining!
The game got pulled from Steam not because it was too spooky but because it had a Winnie the Pooh meme that included Chinese President Xi Jinping that was not taken well. The devs apologized and said they would put it back up after a quality check.
omg I cant find it on steam, this is hilarious
Talk about thin skin. Way worse things to be compared to. Like You know.... our Oompa Loompa POTUS
Katahna Swank why do we have to pander to the Chinese? Fuck their censorship.
@@CynicalScientist261 The game was pulled by the devs, not Steam. Even if Steam decided to pull it, it would not be worldwide like it currently is. They maintain a policy of complying with each country's content regulations within their respective site regions.
@@CynicalScientist261 it's not "us" pandering to the Chinese. It's the Taiwanese developers having to censor their game because they can't offend Xi Jinping...
The marble goes for the box in the cabinet. It's a game. Didn't see anybody point this out.
