Also paper made up these dolls is very thin in order to burn easier.
At first, there were human sacrifice for kings, nobles and some rich man. The sacrificed humans were always their wifes, maiden. BUT as the culture grew, they started to think 'this is too cruel', but couldn't stop the practice, so they started to use these paper dolls as the substitute.

I'm actually surprised that foreign game players got scared by the mannequin scene more than the Taiwanese players. Most scenes that freaked us out are the jump scare scenes and the realistic background.

Well it's not that scary to me, but I do admire the smart trick played lol
You can think the tank / kitchen ones as their memory of wife talking to the husband before meal (with a butcher knife in hand lol), and the later ones of parents looking at the daughter - the player just happens to be in their sightline.
And I think the last one is a metaphor of EXCESSIVE expectations the parents have on the daughter - one of the important points in the storyline.

The correct term should be effigy... usually they are found in Chinese funeral... made from bamboo skeletal structure and wrapped in paper meant to burnt them off as an offering for the dead... usually it is just a couple of maid and man servant together with a big ass paper house...
