Yup. I need to know for myself, since I have a 1989 Crown Victoria (which has the same engine, though toned down), and wanted to eventually put an H-pipe on it.
while i kinda agree i think the ones i did on my grand marquis (4.6L V8) is also really good. H pipe with rear cats deleted, dual flowmasters. Sounds meaty like a mustang 4.6
Wow they both sound amazing. H pipe has that muscle car sound. But the X pipe sounds more race car ,very smooth sounding Can't go wrong with either set up.
They do both sound good I def like h better on every test. It just sounds deeper and meaner to me. Sounds plain evil at idle. I got an h on my 07 gt500 with borla stingers omg does that 5.4 4v sound amazing with that setup.
An uncommon video actually taking the time to do the proper shootout comparison. Credit to the producers. I currently own a white 88 GT and I've gone through a lot of exhaust and I ended up settling on long tubes, H pipe no/cats, Spintech 6000 Pro mufflers and 2.5" piping with LX tails. The sound is on par with a modern Ford power plant and that's what folks think is under the hood but it's still the original 5.0 but crammed with a Vortech. Thanks for sharing!
I noticed the Xbox sound way better because it combines the pulses and makes it Go Zoom instead of blah blah blah. I cannot handle a Cowboys truck with glasspacks going blah blah blah. 🙂
Agreed and that's often a comparison I hear as well. Too raspy is another statement that I hear, especially if you've stuck a chambered muffler on. Chambers go with H pipes and Blow through goes with an X. Best rule of thumb.
.....because of your video, and the awesome comparison you did, I bought BBK long tube headers, offroad H pipe, and pypes cat back exhaust 200 cell count. H pipe sounds meaner and the meaner my Terminator sounds, the better.. thanks for the great vid!
Rickish Monkey66 sounds better at idle. Sounds like a high school kids truck otherwise. I'd rather have something that sounds good otherwise instead of clap clap clap clap
I've always preferred the deep guttural sound of an h pipe. Years ago I swapped from a mac h pipe to a bassani x pipe, 2 1/2 in spintecs with both of them. I swapped back to the h pipe, a percentage point or less power wasn't worth the loss of sound. Not that the x pipe sounded bad, it just wasn't my thing. Y'all should hear a pro chamber, it sounds the most aggressive of them all.
They both sound great but I'm old-school and have been messing with these cars since the 80's and still going to this day. I'm just partial to the H-pipe myself.
That's true. It's a younger kids that like the loud raggedy Mufflers like the short Flowmasters that like the sound of the blah blah blah H pipe. But the x-pipe balances the two sides and makes one smooth sound like Zoom. It sounds so much better like I said it's only the what I call amateurs that like the glass pack sound like on a Cowboys truck. I don't want to hear Mufflers I want to hear a high horsepower engine so I want it to be smooth and quiet as possible
Thanks for the comparison! They both sound great however I'm an old school guy who's been messing with these five-o's since the 80s-90's and still till this day. Although I'm still partial to the H-pipe!
That was my conclusion completely. The H had good sound at idle. But the next pop smooth out those pulses and just roared the music. But young kids want it loud I've got a high horsepower I won't quite Mufflers that are smooth I want to hear that engine hit 7 Grand. I don't want it sound like a Cowboys truck glass packs LOL
All ready been said but this is one of the best comp. vids. I've seen! thanks. Judging by the sqeeling tires I'd say the H pipe has more low end grunt. Both sound great.
Power and torque differences are very mininal. X might have 2 or 3 hp up top if that on the h and the h might have 2 ft lbs torque more at lower rpm but it's a wash I would choose based on sound not performance differences. The difference is so minimal you'd never be able to accurately test the difference between them performance wise.
Thought I was gonna prefer the X pipe, but I think H sounds better overall. Guess it kinda depends on if you noticed a difference in acceleration and overall HP. What did you guys decide on?
one of the best systems I remember installing in the 90's was bbk longtubes and doctor gas X pipe with borla mufflers on an 89lx. made the 5.0 sound like a high rev monster!
Dr Gas for the win. I live just down the road from where they’re made in Utah. Got that setup on my 92 hatch, Vortech V1. The x pipe sounds exotic above 3000 rpm. Oh….added the Boomtubes as well. Really amplifies that sweet high rev pitch.
