  • Classic Game Room HD reviews Q*BERT for the ColecoVision video game system from 1982! QBert is the MAN (or alien or whatever)! He hops from block to block and makes them change colors, he has an awesome nose and this game is funky fresh on the Coleco Vision. Solid graphics, excellent gameplay and an affordable price make QBert on the Colecovision an arcade retro gamer's dream. This Qbert review has gameplay footage from Q*Bert showing the excellent arcade conversion that trumps the Atari 2600 cartridge. Classic Game Room HD is the only retro and modern game reviewer reviewing Colecovision games in High Definition. If you like old school games, you need to jump on the Classic Game Room awesome-wagon. Qbert is a coin-op classic from the 80's that remains fun and addictive to play today.

Colecovision was a beast back then. This was the 1st game I ever bought with my own money. Still have my colecovision, still awesome.

I remember loving this game as a kid in the arcades in the early 80's...and being able to progress thru the levels with ease. When I try to play it now, I can't survive long enough to enjoy it. Great game, though.

I loved playing Q-bert on my Colecovision back in the 90's. I wished I could get a chance to play its sequel Q-bert's Qubes though. Thank you for bringing this memory back. :)

I still hope Mark reviews Q*Bert for the NES someday, as I personally think that's the best home console port of the game. I think he'd like it a lot :)

Nice review. You should do one for the NES version of Q*Bert. That one is really good. I played it a lot as a kid, back in the day.

In Quebec Canada,we had exactly the same game(Named Q*bert as well) a long time ago(In the 90's I guess) on a cable terminal named Vidéoway made by the north american cable distributor Vidéotron. We also had a game named Razzia,A game like Lode runner.

Just so you know Mark, anything that is green in Q*Bert is vulnerable...so the next time you play you CAN go ahead and rip Sam's legs off and stop him before he makes it to the bottom of the pyramid (and ruining more of your tiles). For that matter, I noticed you dodging the green orbs too. Grab those as well; they're good for points.

  • @WyreWizard

Tje green guy's name is Slick. In the arcade version, there were two of them, Sam and Slick. Slick wore sunglasses while Sam didn't. But in this version, its only Slick.

Catching the green ball also freezes the enemies for a few seconds so they can't hurt you while you can keep hopping around.

Plus they freeze the baddies for a few seconds, allowing Q*Bert to change more tiles without anyone chasing him. :)

I LOVED the ColecoVision. when I got it for my birthday many years ago, I was so excited. It was such much better than atari 2600 graphically. Q-bert was one of my favorite games.

How come some old arcade games are so highly revered throughout the years like this and defender.
But titles like Munch Mobile are virtually forgotten?

This is gonna be sort of off topic. But Pac Man, and Q*Bert (along with all other games back then) had a Saturday Morning Cartoon. The Pac Man cartoons are now available for download on Xbox Live. I know, it's got nothing to do with Q*Bert . . but fans of this game still might be interested in the Pac Man cartoon. This review made me think of that just because it was all back around the same time / decade.

You can also use the SEGA Genesis controller on your Colecovision, but of course, you'll also run into the same keypad problem when starting the game.

That's right, you just beat me to saying exactly the same thing! I had this on cart for the C64 and it was the best home version out of all of them.
The graphics are even better and the programmers made excellent use of the SID sound chip. You even hear a motif of the Tubular Bells song during bonuses. :)

I think the reviewer forgot that Q-Bert could touch anything that was green on the board. So the green guy is stopped by touching him. The green ball freezes all bad guys for a short period of time.

The Colecovision port of Q*Bert is awesome but I enjoy the 2600 version better. I don't know why but I just find it to be more fun. Burgertime and Defender are my two favorite games for the Colecovision.

  • @janchapman1969a

unfortunately slick isn't in the home games, only sam. this was due to memory limits. but the game still plays good. You are correct that Q*Bert can stop them and can touch anything green.

Parker Brothers did an excellent job with Qbert for the CV. The best control of any home port of Qbert (use an Atari 2600 joystick in port 1 with the CV controller in port 2 for best results). For those of us who grew up in the 80's this was awesome, and still is!

The TI-99/4A version was even better, with multicolor sprites, and Q*Bert himself is substantially larger, with a very large nose, and has 3 colors. They clearly must have used sprite multiplexing code. The funny thing is, the CV used the exact same graphics chip (and sound chip) as the TI-99/4A, and came out one month after the TI version. And both were published by Parker Brothers.

Intellivision version was better because Q*Bert actually made sounds when he died that sounded totally different then the other game sounds so they sort of made it sound like he was actually saying something.
Colecovision was just a tweaked Atari 2600 it still had flicker problems and the control was slugish.

The Colecovision port buries the Atari 2600 version. At least it includes "Wrong-Way" hopping on the cube-sides after Qbert (incorrectly named as his pig-halfbreed counterpart "Ugg" in the Colecovision game manual). With only "Coily" after you, the 2600 couldn't compare to this one IMO.

The Intellivision version is Better, better graphics and sound and when Q*Bert gets hit he makes a sound as the cartoon swearing shows on the screen and the Pigs make a similar sound that is very clever for the inability to produce digital sound effects without the Intellivoice.

I like your reviews, but why do you CONSTANTLY keep comparing the NES and the Genesis? They're from different generations. By no means could this pass for a Genesis title, unless it was on some kind of "classics" compilation cart.
