- Classic Game Room HD reviews FRENZY for Colecovision, the sequel to BERZERK!!!! Released in 1982 by Stern, Frenzy is very similar to Berzerk but with many advancements. Evil Otto returns and once again you are surrounded by armies of robots and bad guys trying to tear you limb from limb or shoot you with laser beams. ThisColeco Vision review of Frenzy has gameplay footage showing Frenzy being played. This arcade game only made an appearance on 2 video game consoles, the Colecovision and ZX Spectrum. It is one of the greatest video games ever made and should appeal to anyone to enjoys Berzerk and Robotron 2084. Frenzy can be found easy on Ebay and you can't live another second without owning it and playing Frenzy in a frenzied frenzy of frantic Frenzy game playing! Frenzy is one of the best classic games of all time. I don't recall ever seeing one in an arcade but this game is awesome!
They're quite tough to find, but if you do some digging you can find one.
Depending on the arrangement of walls when you enter a room, you can set up an "Otto grinder". Otto always spawns where you entered a room, so position yourself opposite that point with a skeleton as the last robot above or below you between two horizontal reflective walls. As the last robot onscreen, the skeleton will fire repeatedly at you, filling the space next to him with reflected shots that will shred Otto if he has to pass through it to get to you, no matter how fast he moves.
Evil otto at the end will forever haunt my dreams
Coolest game over music ever!
It sounds like it's trying to emulate the Rite of Spring, but in a ragtime chiptune kinda way...
LOL! "Robot attack" A smiley face starts jumping at you. Best thing in a video game EVER!!!
WOW i'm really impressed with this game. Wish i had it and a colecovision!
Awesome review, looks like a fun game!
What an awesome game, I discovered this one thanks to you, so thank you mark !
This game is also included on the Colecovision Flashback - definitely worth the $30 I paid for it. Never mind that you get many other GREAT Colecovision games like Venture, Cosmic Avenger, Jumpman Jr, Space Fury, Space Panic, Zaxxon, Miner 2049'er, Pepper II, Jungle Hunt, and 50 other games!!
+Scooter Ahlers Bob Drecrescenzo made an atari 7800 version of this game. You should see the post of frenzy in atariage forum.
Thank you for reviewing both this game and Venture for the Colecovision! I had completely forgotten about both of these titles, I used to be lucky enough to have an Adam growing up in the 80's and I used to play Frenzy and Venture for hours! De ja vu! I remember the factories in the center, the incredible music, and Giant Otto. Too bad I eventually "upgraded" to an NES and forgot about these classics...
Wow o.O that giant evil Otto really went... BERZERK !!!
Sweet another Colecovision review.
The only thing it's missing is those Incredible synthesized voices 8D
man I love those voices :3
That last part scared the shite out of me. That face was menacing!
Awesome thanks 👍
A top five game of all time for my personal preference and skill set. This version is absolutely spectacular.
awesome looking game!!
Oh yeah! I love me some Frenzy!
I've been waiting on this one for awile Mark. I just knew that you would love it. I was very entertained.
Thanks for posting that! I have not played this game in so many years! You really made my day. Oh, and you even included what happens when you kill Evil Otto in Big Otto's room. I remember when I did that and boy did I learn my lesson. I think the same thing happens when you shoot Big Otto himself.
Thanks once again for this posting.
I definitely like the in-game music. 👍
Very nice review. I don't think I've ever gotten past the 'Big Otto' room. Mostly because I always had/have too much fun sic the rabid Ottos on my character. Great game!
Love the end-tune on this game!
Most, if not all of the music on this game is from The Rite of Spring. (Stravinsky)
For the whole video, after you mentioned what would happen with otto, I was really hoping that you would show us in the video. Thank you for not teasing me like that. ;D
As a 2600 kid I didn't even know there was a home port of Frenzy for any console but I was pretty happy with Berserk anyway
My friend found a colecoviseon in his garage, and he recently got frenzy, its awesome!
Is it sad that I would wait all days just to see all the new stuff mark put up here? *lol* they're just that awesome ;D
with a smile like that how can otto be evil!
He is thou! Lol
Classic game room i have almost seen all your vids and you rock :D
Brilliant game!
The Retro Gamer article on the making of Frenzy told me so much about how this outstanding game came to be. Shame that hardly any home ports were made, but the ColecoVision one is superb, at least.
I remember this! But I didn't know it was a sequel to Berserk until now!
@craftybone You're right about the Sacre Du Printemps excerpts. Most of the quotes are from the first act, but when Evil Otto comes out, its the English Horn solo from act two.
Liked the ending!
Yes, the ColecoVision is worth it at least for this game, though I can play it on MAME and own a Zed Eds Spectrum
@craftybone You're right about the Sacre Du Printemps excerpts. Most of the quotes are from the first act, but when Evil Otto comes out, its the English Horn solo from act two. and ohh, yes, the Glorification of the Earth music from act two, at the end of the game. I wonder if the programmer used Petrouchka music on some other colecovision game, I'm not yet hip to.
I'm addicted to Berzerk and Frenzy on MAME. It's a shame they couldn't put the robot voices on these console version, they are awesome!
I remeber this game from an arcade at one of the malls in my city back in early 83. Loved it but was disappointed that it never came out for Atari at the time.
Awesome
I'm actually watching this now, wow this looks like Berzerk. Holy crap it is a sequel? NIiiiice!
I played Berzerk (I own it) I thought it was ok, I enjoyed watching your review of it more :D
Fun fact: Alan McNeil (Frenzy's designer) refers to the giant Evil Otto as "Mama Otto".
I have this for MAME, it's awesome =)
It's an program that emulates arcade machines. Anything made before 2000 is probably supported. Nifty stuff!
LOL, Frenzy would seem like a survival horror game, but the music makes it all hilarious.
Actually now you can get this on the NES, as part of a Berzerk/Frenzy homebrew package by Robert DeCrescenzo. They're both nearly arcade-perfect.
The SMS uses a variation of the sound chip used in the ColecoVision.
Holy crap, it's Berserk 2!
Why was I not informed sooner?!
Excellent review man. But I honestly like Evil Dead 2 more then Evil Dead because it seems to focus on Bruce Campbell more and it links up to Army of Darkness. Even tho the scenes they used to link the 2 weren't linked as good as they could have been.
I have now played Frenzy, and can confirm that it truly is sweetness. Better? Harder? Up to discussion.
god, for the 1980's, COLECOVISION had kick ass graphics.
Quite possibly, Frenzy was Colecovision's best arcade port. Hell, in some ways the Colecovision version was even better than the original arcade game: Background music and the human is better animated.
it would be fun to have a version of this on the nintendo switch
Anyone remember frenzy on the C64? Nothing like this was one of those games where you gradually box enemies inside a square. err anyway nice video been looking to grab a colecovision for ages
@InecomCompany
I still got some of those episodes on tape somewhere. :D
The CV version of Frenzy is better than the arcade original. The guy runs more realistically, and l love how they updated the death animation. The music and sound are out of this world-I don’t miss the voice. Frenzy and Pepper ll are the two best games for the Colecovision.
cool game
Never could get use to that damn controller!!
The Zee Ex Spectrum? Ho Ho Mark.
In the UK its the Zed Ex Spectrum.
I'm not an authority but between
1982-1986 I had around fifty games
for the Zee Ex Spectrum and I
don't remember Frenzy. I remember
Berzerk on that platform. And Frenzy
looks like alot of fun so sad I missed
that one "in the day".
the spectrum version is extremely vivid
Frenzy reminds me of the tank game in Wii Play.
I did not know this was a sequel, I figured it was a clone since there is no Berzerk for Coleco.
I cannot find this anywhere online. There is only one copy of it on ebay
it's like bezerk on steroids. :D
easily buying worth a coleco for ?
what would i have to drop for one ?
Army of Darkness ftw!
this is my favorite part 6:38
I had this a long time ago. I played the crap out of Frenzy.
to cool
I think they had the peacock in the black and white era as well.
This actually looks a bit easier than Berserk, since the walls aren't lethal and you can keep Evil Otto at bay for a while.
Hey! We invented the language muddy funster!!! :D
Tranzor Z originated in the US so it's pronounced Zee, not Zed, where as ZX Spectrum originated in the UK. :D
this is cool game
this looks like a huge improvement over Berzerk
i loved berzerk so much i made a song about it. and i really wanted to love frenzy too but it has a nasty habit of spawning you somewhere that kills you instantly, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row. it feels like a design flaw :
5:57 Zelda sound!
It looks like it would be cool on Xbox Live with updated graphics.
1.friendly fire FTW
2.what is the name of your theme song
3.5/5
All true, folks. Frenzy for the Colecovision is actually better than the arcade version. One thing Classic Game Room does not mention, is that the music in this CV cartridge is all from the Stravinsky ballet, The Rite of Spring. RUclips that ballet, by all means.
The only thing i didn't like about Colecovision, was the 10 pound AC adapter.
The Atari 2600 version of Berzerk can let you kill Evil Otto on some settings.
@ the end
Damn, teabagged to death by a bunch mechanical smiley face beach balls.
Better than berserk are you crazy? actually does look pretty damn good xP
@InecomCompany IT'S BOTH!!!
1:39 The ZX Spectrum was a British computer, so it's Zed-Ex Spectrum not Zee-Ex Spectrum! (cringe) Anyway, yes, there were 2 "Frenzy" games on the Spectrum, from different devs, one released in 1982 and the other in 1983. Amusingly, both were unlicensed clones of Berzerk, the original game, with the name changed to Frenzy - so I guess neither dev knew Berzerk had a sequel that was actually called Frenzy :)
You also do NOT, and I mean NOT, want to take a leak when the Daddy Evil Otto is watching. VERY bad things happen to you. *Shudders*
6:39 Provoke Giant Evil Otto, and he shall lay his vengeance down upon ye.
hurr durr Mark already established that it's the sequel
ROBOT ATTACK!
So this is one of your favourite games of all time then?
Does this game have an ending???
FUCK YEAH COLECOVISION
Sequels better than the original? How about WRATH OF FREAKING KAHN :)
fuck!!! big daddy evil otto is a beast!!!
6:42 Gang-raped by Evil Ottos. What a horrible way to die.
I was absolutely stunned the first time I experienced this on the Colecovision. "What the ... WHAT??!!"
@FuyuAkiWorld, that's not such a strange opinion. A lot of people (maybe even most) feel that Empire was better than the original Star Wars.
Thumbs up if you're here because of the Killzone 2 review!
@InecomCompany
While I know your joking, according to Wikipedia, (Pronounced "Zed Ecks Spec-trum" in its original British English branding)
6:40 Mother of god
doesn't have the voices but better character animation & death
Spot on, and incredible music.
@joelwestthegamer if what you say is true... then you have all my ammiration :D
@y2k4ever1 thats funny thatshow i got my atari 2600
Mega Man before he existed.
