    Classic Game Room reviews MR. DO! for ColecoVision from 1983. Originally released in the arcades in 1983 by Universal and published by Taito, Mr. Do! is very similar to Namco's classic Dig Dug but with some fundamental differences that make it rock. In Mr. Do you play as a clown armed with a fun-ball that you throw at enemies, once thrown it leaves you vulnerable until it comes back. Collect cherries in groups of 8 to score bonus points, drop apples on bad guys and collect letters to score an extra life. Similar to Dig Dug you are digging around in dirt and avoiding bad guys in tunnels as well as collecting various food items in the center of the screen, but the scoring is very different and the super-ball requires a different offensive strategy than one would use with a bike pump. Mr. Do! was ported to various game consoles including the Atari 2600, NES, Super Nintendo SNES and Neo Geo! The ColecoVision version is excellent and suffers a bit because of the Coleco controller but not enough to ruin the game. Visuals and audio are top notch as is the stunning gameplay. This CGR review of Mr. Do! has gameplay from Mr Do showing Mr. Do game play in HD from Colecovision where gaming review footage of Mr. Do! was recorded for this Mr. Do! video review on RUclips.

    As I recall, one of the Colecovision's strengths was that its arcade translations were SPOT ON.

    Mr Do was one of the best arcade games of the era. The colecovision version was the best home version until the SNES version came many years later. Also has been mentioned before Mr Do's Castle is a great game as well.

    I used to play this game to death on my Colecovision. Universal games translated better than others on this system.

    • @TheCRTman
      @TheCRTman 9 лет назад +1

      SchizoidMan100 I have to agree that Universal games were the best on here. Universal typically used the same Texas Instruments sound chip in their arcade machines and I think the same Zilog Z80 CPU. The only funny thing with this port is, it was actually based on the Mr. Do! Prototype version of the arcade.

    This brings me back the old memories of 80s. I was 8 or 9 at that time and enviously watching teens playing this game at a local shop. My grandma gave me money to play but for some reason this game looked scary to me (or I was scared by the people over there) so I declined. I still wonder why I was so scared while this seems a perfectly loveable game now. Kids nowadays probably wouldn't be scared by this at all.

    The Colecovision brought the arcade experience home when it was released, and they were not kidding, The levels are detailed, and for once the objects represent what there supposed to really well.

    It's one of those you wouldn't think would be fun sort of a Pac-man meets Dig-dug but I agree it's hard to put down. I borrowed it form my friend in the 80's then got it for my CV in the 1990's

    The Colecovision port is interesting in that it has some traits from the prototype of the arcade version rather than the final release. The music that plays during the levels is virtually the same as the prototype, and clearly different from the final arcade release. The ability to freeze the monsters without bringing out chompers (and the music that plays when doing so) is something from the prototype as well. Also like the prototype (and unlike the arcade version) the "EXTRA" letter monsters don't eat apples and don't turn into apples when shot.
    Something that I think is unique to the Colecovision port is the behavior of the chompers, which eat through dirt to reach you. In the arcade version, they only travel on paths already cleared away. I don't think the prototype had chompers at all.

    Sometimes an apple falls and a diamond appears.
    You can finish the level by picking it up.
    In the arcade you got an extra credit.

    I still have my Colecovision along with Mr. Do and a assortment of other games. The trick with this game is to get that elusive diamond from making a move dropping one of the rocks and smashing a bunch of chasing enemies with one changing from purple to blue to white in color for big bonus points.

    Hey Mark, When you get a chance since this was your first time playing Mr. Do, I don't know if you cover arcade games/MAME but look up: Mr Do Castle. He uses a hammer and is very challenging. I have Mr. Do for the Atari 2600. What I really like Mark is that people in my age range (i'm 34) can enjoy games like this. And Im glad you show respect to the older games. 2 year watcher of your shows. Keep up good work

    The arcade version had a very neat thing. If you dropped an apple from a far enough distance and squashed some enemies, a diamond would appear. If you touched the diamond, you'd get 8000 points and....a free game.

    Much of the music you hear in this port of the game was taken from the prototype arcade version of _Mr. Do!_ instead of the released version.

    • @TheCRTman
      @TheCRTman 9 лет назад +1

      ClassicTVMan1981X Hey cool to see you here. My thoughts are due to the limitations of the ColecoVision, they aimed to do a port of the prototype more than the released version. When I first watched this video in 2011, I was confused why the music was different from the arcade game, then I found the prototype version.

    This isn't a bad port, but nothing beats the arcade console.
    I like how you can tell what level you are on based on the number that is dug out when you start a level. This does not apply to level 1, 11, 21, etc, but level 2,3,4, etc all are shaped like a number. level 10 is shaped like a 0.

    This is very similar to Mr Ee on the BBC Micro. Also there is Fruity Frank on the Amstrad CPC! The BBC Micro version is perhaps more similar to the Colecovision one, but the Amstrad CPC version is really something else! Check it out, it is really fun to play! .... Also I loved Dig Dug on the Atari it was one my first favourite games.

    How does Mr. Do's story end?
    Even stranger then this...actually. Once he grows tired of being a clown stuck in a minor monster hunter's job, he digs out into the sunlight and cheers up a depressed king and queen. His antics earn him a respectable position amidst the castle. Nw that nobody has stepped forth to replaced his mine hunting job, the monsters start coming to the surface and overrun the lands. The king and queen's knights are powerless. Only Mr. Do can save the kingdom in Mr. Do 2.

    @TheXLink What I expect the next step to be is the "George Lucas room". This is a kind of modern day holodeck. Because technology keeps getting cheaper to make massive flat screens possible. 3-D glasses with high rate TV's are already here. Surround sound has existed for some time. PC's can now handle multiple monitors at once. So, I truly expect a trend of a small room with every wall/ceiling consisting of a display to be the next big thing.
    As for the USB in the head bit...bad idea.
