    Wonderful system, capable of such good arcade ports for the time and with such a large post release library of titles.
    I have released a few titles in the past through Collectorvision. One new one finished (Berzerk) waiting for chips to manufacturer and another EA 70's Arcade Classics almost done as well.

    I was clueless on Coleco until I started collecting as we had a 5200 and I was born in 82.... But wow has it become one of my absolute favorite retro systems! Proud owner of the Phoenix and seriously is there a bigger after market scene out there?! I started with the atgames flashback and worked my way up. That Mario Bros port really is amazing..... plus many games that can not be spoken of from certain clubs!

    Such an underrated system that never got the love it deserved back in the day. It was the first system we had growing up. Lots of fun memories of Donkey Kong, Zaxxon, GORF, and Venture to name a few! 😊

      For sure. This came out in the early 80's. Video games were geared towards kids. Remember not everyone had cable tv, you still had the black & white tv's with the 2 knobs & Rabbit ears. So you only got like 4 channels. When they advertised it for commercials maybe it wasn't enough for everyone to see them. Also at that time I don't think they were mailing catalogues in the mail to show their system in magazines.

      Don’t forget that the crash came right when the Colecovision was hitting its stride. Though released in August 1982, it wasn’t widely available until mid October. And within nine months or so, the crash writing was on the wall. It takes time for a system to really take off (NES took off gradually) and sadly the CV never had much of a window.

      @@tonyp9313 I remember my parents letting me have their old black and white in my bedroom. I was ecstatic, because I could watch Hogan's Heroes reruns! 😄 Only got eleven channels (2-12, as there was no Channel 1), and I don't ever recall getting anything with the second knob.
      @Mr MojoRisen 87, fair point. I was eight when we got our Colecovision, so that would have been right in the middle of the videogame crash, though I was oblivious to it.

      @@legionarybooks13 Video games are a lot more popular now. You get to choose from 1000's of games, consoles are marketed way better. Everybody seems to have 2 consoles per generation now.

    Last year I sold off a good portion of my retro collection but kept my Colecovision. It was the first system I had as a kid (my parents never bought a 2600) and I have fond memories of playing Venture and Lady Bug. I remember buying Beamrider as the last game we got for it just as The Crash was happening. It really was an amazing system if you can ignore the uncomfortable controller.

    The leap from the Atari 2600 to the Colecovision was the greatest console leap in history-to this day. That is to say (to provide an example): Nintendo consoles have regularly improved over the years, but the changes have been incremental. 2600 owners like me found the new Colecovision games to be light years ahead in graphics, sound, and playability. When our local department store brought out a CV and demonstrated the games, people literally gasped. Probably sounds comical to some of you younger gamers, but the new hardware was really mind boggling at the time.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 2 года назад +1

      Back in the 70's for atari then early 80's for Collecovision, you are talking about a very small portion of people who even played these consoles. It was mostly kids who were playing these. The graphics seem the same to me. If you want big leaps & innovations, that has to be Nintendo with the way better graphics than Atari & Collecovision. First system to come out with RCA wires so you don't need the rf switch to plug it in the back of the tv. First system to come out with Control pads that were a whole lot better than the joy sticks or dials. The pause button on the controller & games that were now the vast majority that had a start & a finish with little side stories to them. The for Playstation way later on to come out with Memory cards to have your games saved on them.

    • @mrmojorisin8752
      @mrmojorisin8752 2 года назад +5

      @@tonyp9313 Several points: It was not a “very small” percentage of the population that played the early consoles. History lesson: the Atari 2600 alone sold 27 million units and the NES was just as kid centered as the Atari was. Early video games made the cover of Time Magazine, hardly a kids’ publication. In the early 80s, video games were everywhere, even though they have gradually gotten more popular over time. Second, if you are used to todays graphics, yes, the old ones seem the same. But to me, PS4 and PS5 seem about the same. The leap from the Colecovision to the NES was noticeable, but not huge. I had a NY release of the NES, XMas 1985. It was better than the Colecovision, for sure, but neither my friends nor I were blown away by the improvement in graphics and sound. Comparisons with PlayStation are off the question; the issue is the leap from one console to the very next one. And to this day, the leap to the Colecovision was the largest leap. Thanks for weighing in, and I’d be interested in other people’s opinions.

    • @legionarybooks13
      @legionarybooks13 2 года назад +3

      Case in point: I remember playing Donkey Kong on a friend's 2600. Then when we got our Coleco, it was the in-package game and I was blown away.

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 2 года назад +1

      @@mrmojorisin8752 I didn't know video games were on Time Magazines. How many people would know about that though? It's not like everyone paid for a Subscription of time Magazines. I looked up the Atari 2600 sales it was 30 million sold. I don't find the leap huge from a PS4 to a PS5. Only thing that is different is the wifi internet speeds that are much better than the PS4.
      The Atari to the Colleco Vision looks the same to me. As I stated I noticed a huge leap from Atari to Nes.
      If we are talking about sales, yeah that's very impressive that the Atari System sold 30 million units. If you compare that to now it's a very low selling point since systems can sell like 100 million units & the PS5 alone in 1 year has about 15-20 million sales.
      Video games now are a lot more accessible now. You can choose from 100's of games they have in the digital store, play a friend or stranger online. So many things.

    • @mrmojorisin8752
      @mrmojorisin8752 2 года назад +4

      @@tonyp9313 Another history lesson: the late 70s/early 80s were long, LONG before the internet. Newspapers and magazines were huge. Time mag had not only a huge subscriber base, but you saw its cover at every newsstand and at every supermarket checkout. The point is that the first wave of video games back then was much larger in society than you seem to understand. Consider also that video games had far less competition in the area of entertainment than now. No internet. Far less TV because millions did not even have cable. VCRs and CDs were not widespread until after the mid 80s. Do a RUclips search for Combat for the 2600 and Antarctic Adventure for the Colecovision. The leap in graphics and sound is fundamental. Again, the issue isn’t the leap from Atari to NES, or from Bally Astrocade to PS2. The question at hand is the leap from one console to the very next. The leap from Colecovision to NES was “iterative”; it wasn’t huge. There’s a guy on RUclips who compares games released for both the Colecovision and the NES. He argues that the graphics on the Colecovision versions are BETTER than the NES versions. Remember also that the life of the CV was cut short long before programmers were able to show what it was fully capable of.

    You mentioned the Sega SG-1000. It, like the MSX, shared the same hardware as the Colecovision. There were 2 Colecovision/SG-1000 compatible consoles sold in the U.S. The Dendy 2 in One released in the U.S. in '87, and a Telegames branded version called the Telegames Personal Arcade, released here in '89. Both were manufactured by Bit Corp and each had two cartridge slots (one for SG-1000 games; one for Colecovision games). It sold for $40 and was available via mail order only. Today both are rare. They obtained a license from Coleco, but no proof has surfaced as far as a Sega license is concerned. More recently we were offered the CollectorVision Phoenix Game System, which will play Colecovision games, including those that require the Super Game Module. I only own 2 Colecovision homebrew games, Cosmo Fighter 2 and Cosmo Fighter 3. I believe that they are sequels to the SegaSonic arcade game Cosmo Fighter. I haven't bought more because I currently have no way to play Colecovision games. SG-1000 games I can play, because I own a Japanese Sega Master System, which is fully backward compatible with games for the SG-1000/SC-3000 and clone systems like the Othello Mutlivision.

I need games that have a start & finish to them. I'm talking about Nintendo to like PS1 games. Games that are like really short too from anywhere from 1 hour to 5. I am told that the number of CV homebrews is now greater than the number of games released for the system back in the 80s-so I appreciate any guidance on “can’t miss” titles. Personally, I am less likely to buy or play a game if I can easily play a better version of that game on another retro console. For example, Arkanoid is best played on the NES with the Vaus controller. I am partial to CV exclusives like the Sydney Hunter games and Steamroller. I also enjoy updates and hacks of existing games. I saw a sequel to Frenzy that looked promising. And why hasn’t someone made Pepper lll? Hack the original and add 4 or 8 or 12 new mazes. If done well, I guarantee it would be a major success. I spoke to a developer about Pepper lll some years ago, and he thought it was a great idea….but no one has jumped on it yet.
