    I know this video was made in 2014 but I just watched it for the first time here in 2021 and wanted to comment anyway. I had a Colecovision and the Adam as well. My favorite game on CV was the licensed game "Wargames" based off of the 1983 movie starring Mathew Broderick. The game used overlays on the number pad, featured a difficulty setting from 1 - 8 (the thermonuclear war setting) and was created by Coleco staffer Joseph Angiolillo who had studied game design elements under the legend Gary Gygax of the DnD and TSR games. Angiolillo would go on to become one of the RPG Pathfinder's contributors as well as many other projects in gaming. Since Coleco no longer has the Wargames license, I'm not at all surprised they couldn't put Wargames on this modern Flashback but it is still sad to see a "ColecoVision" without my favorite game. I have seen the Flashback at my local Dollar General within the past couple of years and might pick it up any way just for nostalgia. My 8 year old likes to play atari era games on plug and play systems so he might enjoy the ColecoVision Flashback, too. Great review!

      The things I loved about the ColecoVision was that it had 1) better graphics than the 2600, and 2) it had a 2600 add-on module.
      That made it a no-brainer to get the CV.

    Excellent video! I too got my Colecovision Flashback on Thanksgiving for $28 from Dollar General, and I thought it was a great deal! Even though I remember playing a next-door neighbor's CV back in the day, I never owned an original then.
    I was lucky enough to do some horse-trading a couple of weeks ago and got me a CV in the box with several games and I can testify that the controllers on the original tend to be very stiff to me, The stick is a bit clunky and I have to press really hard on the left button to get any kind of response (thankfully you can use an Atari or Sega controller instead). The CVF controller stick is very loose in comparison, almost to the point of twitchiness but is much easier on the hands.
    But 61 games, many of which are very hard to come by and often are great fun? I loved Arctic Adventure; I first played that game as part of the Konami MSX Antiques Collection that appeared for the Japanese Sega Saturn (fun fact; the penguin swears in that one, when he messes up and loses). I was very glad to find this as the DG-exclusive title.
    Sure it doesn't have a lot of the older licensed games, but it does have a lot of old favorites, some licensed from Sega, Konami, Exidy and Taito. That's something you won't often find elsewhere.
    In conclusion, I don't regret my purchase one bit!

    It's a shame they didn't include Burgertime. Burger Time is one of the best games on the system. I've heard the emulation isn't that good (I have a real Colecovision). It's very surprising how bad the emulation is on these things. ALL of these old game systems have very refined emulators available and don't require a lot of computing horsepower. Not only that, but the Colecovision is almost identical to the MSX computer and the SG-1000 game console and is one of the best documented of these old systems, so that even if they couldn't use an available emulator, writing one from scratch would be fairly easy because the system is just so well documented and understood.

    I'm glad to see that it has games like Venture, Miner 2049er, Jungle Hunt, The Heist, & Zaxxon. Of the 61 games those were my favorites. Luckily I still have those games. Let's go back in time....
    I bought the Atari 2600 when it came out. Later on when the Colecovision came out I sold my Atari 2600 to a friend, and my Mom helped with the rest of the money to purchase the Colecovision. I still have the Colecovision with all the Cartridges that I bought plus the Atari Expansion Module with the Atari Cartridges that I kept. I also have the Super Controllers that came with ROCKY. Oh, I also still have the Steering Wheel, and Gas pedal that came with TURBO.
    That's one thing that is different between me, and my older brother. He sold, or traded everything that our Mom ever bought him while I kept almost everything that she bought me. I still have the Commodore 64 with the Floppy Disc Drive. I can't remember if I still have the Cassette Tape Drive that we first got for it, or not? LOL I even have all the Rubix Cubes from the 80s. 😉
    Thanks for making, and sharing this video. Now I want to bring out my Colecovision to play. Yes, It still works. 😜

    I think it is a fine unit for the price considering what you get included, yeah everyone wants their favorite game included, a cartridge slot, HDMI out etc, lol, I didn't have unrealistic expectation BUT I did think it could have looked better, the Intellivision flashback looks much closer to the original console, also the emulation when compared to the real system leaves something to be desired, some sound glitches or complete omissions where sampled speech is completely screwed up and don't even compare Microvsions THE HEIST to the original or you will cry as it runs at about 1/2 speed killing the pace and music. Because they rushed it they also screwed compatibility with original controllers. Again, for what is on offer I think it is a fair price for those whom are not too fussy but they really should have gotten the emulation more accurate at the least.

      MaximumRD Venture already sounds nothing like the Venture I played when I was 6.

    • @MaximumRD
      @MaximumRD 9 лет назад +2

      Yeah the emulation is not that great, will still take my original ColecoVision with Atarimax cart anytime over this, really no excuse just a poor attempt but that is what you get with Atgames always cutting corners and accepting barely good enough to keep the price down. It really is NOT for those wanting a true reproduction of their childhood experience sadly. :p

    Actually..... I'm pretty sure the load time is there because the Z80 had to write the graphics data to the graphics ram via an output port. The VDG was an I/O device and not memory mapped like other game consoles of the time. I believe you need to write two values to put one value out to the VDG. One for the location and another the actual data. This delay is present on all such systems using the TMS 99xx VDG, such as the TI-99/4A, MSX and other similar based systems.

    CORRECTION: "Destructor" was not a homebrew title. I remember my neighbor's kid bought it way back in the 1980s and it was designed to be used with the ColecoVision steering wheel. Has anyone else had the experience that I had, where the first controller port stopped responding left? This was after approximately one year with no damage or aggressive misuse of the game system itself.
    Thinking that it may have been an issue with the controller, I tried the (unused) 2nd controller in the first port and it was the same problem of not responding with a left direction, unfortunately. The second port responded correctly with both controllers, but the problem is that this excludes any one player only games from being operable.
    Overall, I really enjoy(ed) this system actually, since there are various games that I used to play on the Atari 800 xl, such as Gateway to Apshai, Montezuma's Revenge, Jumpman, Jr., Jungle Hunt, and Zaxxon, among others.
    Anyway, if there's any advice as to what might need adjustment or replacement in the motherboard (as I suspect), I'd appreciate it!

    Between this and Intellivsion Flashback, this is easily the better Flashback. Even though, it's understandable to be disappointed in the Donkey Kong games not being included (Donkey Kong being the system-seller), I feel they weren't really the best games on the console as the console had better conversions than those. My favorite games are Montezuma's Revenge, Jumpman Junior, Miner 2049er, Pepper II, and Frenzy; with the exception of the educational games, the selection s beefier and more to offer compared to the Intellivision Flashback. That said, I'm not to crazy with the homebrew games, especially being a huge fan of the scene; Mecha 8's hitbox to too big for its own good and Princess Quest, while ambitious and has cool ideas, just doesn't feel anywhere near as polished as Ghosts & Goblins.

    Wow. These were colecovision games? Aside from homebrews, the big ones not shown, and a few of the well known ones (like space fury) im disappointed. Even 2600 shooters looked more fun. Although,,im intrigued about the rpg ones. I had an intellivision, loved the d&d ones on that system.

    "Destructor" is not a homebrew. I had that game when I was 7. I recall it used the steering wheel module.

      Technically this version of Destructor is a homebrew game by Team Pixelboy. It is the same as the original release except this one doesn't require Expansion Model #2 the Steering Wheel Controller is the only difference.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak

      @@bmkretrogaming7634 OK, I can understand why they did that. Just that on the surface it feels like the same game to me.

      @@ChristopherSobieniak well as I said above it is technically the same game in all regards except for being able to use the original ColecoVision controllers. On their website Team Pixelboy explains that the Steering Wheel Controller being required for the original release was a sore point for many gamers. That's why they thought to do it.

    I love the original CV. I used to play it til all hours of the day. Always hated the joysticks though. The new CV FS joysticks are even less friendly. And some of the games are not as fun as the original versions. Also, why no Looping? No Donkey Kong? No DK Junior! Hopefully in the second version... Also, check out these replacement controllers for the Flashback on Ebay. Pretty cool...

      RV S Licensing. In the case of DK and DK JR, Nintendo would have to be paid and ok it, which is not impossible, but Nintendo rarely lets games appear on other systems anymore.

  • @TheMGMfan
    @TheMGMfan 8 лет назад +1

    I kinda disagree with you. I never had an actual experience with anything Coleco, let alone the Colecovision, and I played none of the flashbacks (I'm the kind of guy who prefers the original format), so my opinion isn't fair, but I watched another review of this criticize this for the fact that the sound is a bit off and the controllers aren't very good (even worse than the original's controllers, in fact) because it didn't feel very sturdy and the joystick wasn't as good, and some of the games aren't as playable because of said controllers. While you're right that it has some games that are rare, but I'm confused to why the first game is an edutainment game (though I bet it's because the wanted it to be in Alphabetic order). Also, while I'm disappointed that Donkey Kong, which the system is most known for, isn't on here, I understand that it was due to licensing reasons. It still wouldn't for hurt for AtGames (who were the actual manufactures of this, not Coleco themselves) to at least try to get the license. Again, I didn't get a taste of that CV experience yet, but I ordered an actual CV (with 16 games), so I would say that if you haven't played it, then go buy the console, like me.

    • @thenosweargamer1449
      @thenosweargamer1449  8 лет назад +2

      That's ok! I don't expect everyone to share the same opinion, but I enjoyed the system. Yes I prefer to play original systems when possible, but for the number of games and the price, I thought it was a good deal. And it's hard to say since we aren't in the company, but it's possible AtGames approached Nintendo, but Nintendo said no. Actually, since they have worked with Atari, Sega, Intellivision and a bunch of third parties, I wouldn't be surprised if they approached Nintendo about an NES flashback, but got turned down.

    Most of the games on this system are stupid. This is not what the Colecovision is famous for. I get copyright issues, but i don't get the choices. Cosmic Avenger is by Universal, but where's Mr. Do and Lady Bug. There are a few Exidy games on there, most games are imagic or other companies which can be played on other systems. Why bother with this just use an emulator. This was another missed opportunity by these crappy companies that bring out these consoles. $40 Dollars US. In Australia they are trying to sell these things online for $150+. WHAT!!
