    My wife had an Intellivision when she was a kid and when I first met her and her brother, they pulled it out and were showing it to me. I'd never played an Intellivision before so I tried Astrosmash. I started playing and just could not die. I don't remember what my score was but they both sat there with this shocked look on their faces. Apparently neither of them had ever gotten as far as I did. I guess all those years of Space Invaders, Galaxian and Phoenix honed my vertical shooter skills. :D

      I like to see that there are some Intellivision fans still ..That wasn't my favorite game .. and even probably the one i played less with. My father owned a Camping between 1977 & 1984 . Every year . we would get 12 pinball machines + 2 pool tables and a juke box in an Entertainment facility, with a stage for bands, Huge Disco Nights From The #1 Radio Station at the Time that would come every Saturday Nights... in the first years we had over 12 pinball machines , juke box et pool tables .. and then we got Arcade games .. the first Ones .. Breakout was first , even before space invaders .. .. and then all of em when they came out ..Asteroids, Pac-Man, Jr. , Miss, ...loll .., Joust, Gorf, Berserk, Robotron, Tempest, Galaxian, Galaga, ...moving up to Xevious, Star Wars ( I can,T name'em all ) 6 arcade games every summers and those who weren't popular were replaced mid summer .. so .. we played very many arcade games ..(and that's not counting fall winter & spring at the Roller Skate place late 70's early 80's lolll ( Omega Race, Atari's best Car game "Night driver" .... But Guess what " Intellivison " was the one we played with and was the most interesting outside real arcade places .. and by the way .. if you couldn't die playing an Intellivision game it's because the "Firt thing you hit when thay ask for "Levels " never play at level 1-2-3-or 4 .. you hit the Disc .. and now you are in full mode , real mode, arcade mode... and it's a TOTALLY different Ball game .. Far from most console, .. you will be beaten .. ;) but hey , in all do respect .... Remain Blocky always Gang ;)

    The Intellivision was an interesting piece of the second generation puzzle. While I'm more of an Atari and ColecoVision guy due to the arcade games it's still worth taking a look at. Since my Dollar General was practically giving it away at 70% off, how could I say no? There's some more arcadey games for the console that would have been nice to have but a lot of those were licensed titles they probably couldn't get a hold of.

    In Astrosmash, you could only get to 999,999. Then the game would stop adding to your score. About 20 levels after that, those dropping smart bombs were too fast to defeat. It was my favorite game. I got to 999,999 too many times to count. I even sent a photo of my last level screen at 999,999 to Intellivision, but never heard back.

    • @chefcabbage
      @chefcabbage 8 лет назад

      I don't know. It was a long time ago. The pattern I'm talking about is when and where the smart bomb would start falling. If I remember correctly, and I probably don't, it would start on one side, then the other then in the middle or something like that. At the higher levels, it's so fast that it will kill you quickly. You just had to know where it was coming from and enough lives to score a few more points before you ran out of lives.

    • @chefcabbage
      @chefcabbage 8 лет назад

      But that started around 900,000, and you had to have something like 50 or 60 lives left.

    My brother and I enjoyed Frog Bog a lot. There were keypad buttons that changed the control style; the default is what you showed where the frog jumps back and forth predictably and eats bugs automatically, but the keypad buttons would change it to where you had more control over the jumps and could even splash in the water, and could catch bugs manually. :) Harder, but more rewarding and you could get more points!

    Back in the 80s, my grandfather got an Atari 2600, even though he was a bit of a technophobe. Also being interested in Naval type stuff, he would spot the game Sub Hunt, since Intellivision games were normally located right next to the Atari ones, and ask if he could play that on the Atari. Each time I'd tell him no. After the video game crash, they got me an Intellivision for Christmas and I bought a bunch of games for cheap prices, including Sub Hunt. Since they lived right downstairs, I hooked the Intellivision up next to the Atari so that they could play it too. After getting Sub Hunt, I showed it to my grandfather and offered to teach him how to play it. He wouldn't even try because the controllers were too complicated! At least my grandmother liked to play Burgertime.
    The disc was awkward, but I used to stick a suction cup on it and use that as a stubby joystick. It worked pretty well, although it would eventually come loose and I'd have to re-stick it. I know they made some commercial alternatives, like stick on joysticks, replacement discs with joysticks on them, clamp on joysticks, etc, but I never had any of them. I wanted the Wico Intellivision joystick, but it was too expensive.

  • @sanicyouth6540
    @sanicyouth6540 8 лет назад +3

    Why doesn't the game selection menu just simply use the disk to select a game on the page, any of the side buttons to start a game, and use the numeric keypad to select a page?
    If only there was a reproduction Intellivision. In other words a modern Intellivision that has all of the functionality of the original Intellivision with the Intellivoice built in, a few built in games, and the cables (as well as the option for an HDMI cable) to hook up to a more modern television set.

    Since I have a gen 1 Intellivision with around 40 games, I'd only pick this up if I could find a really good deal on it. But some of the games on it are really rare. Stadium Mud Buggies for instance, was one of two final games to be released for the system, in 1989! Typically the carts by themselves will likely cost you upwards to $130, but if you find a sealed one it'll probably set you back over $700.
    Thunder Castle, while not as rare usually sells for $30 for the cart alone. I think Tower of Doom is another rare one, but since the game is apparently unplayable, maybe it'll play better on the Intellivision Lives! compilation for PS2.
    But for those without access to an actual Intellivision and wants to try those wacky controllers, this would be a great way to dip your toe in the water.

  • @hankw69

    Bought one of these the year it came out and LOVED IT! Just like my childhood playing against my little brother. Within 2 months of light wear a controller failed. AND just before the warrantee expired the whole thing just stopped working. I've also had 2 Atari Flashbacks. One died within a year(although the controllers were great and still work!) and the other I gave to my daughter. It also failed after a few months with her roommates. Would love another one of these, but they aren't cheap on e-bay and my luck has not been very good.

I had 2 sisters growing up and they would never play those games with me. My mom tried playing with me but it was not very much fun. What would be really cool is if they made this expandable where you can download add-on games. I don't know what company released this but it's all about profits and apparently this unit didn't sell very well because I looked around at every retailer and couldn't find any units.

    If only Intellivision had licensed Space Invaders (a "killer app") then its system would have sold more in 1980. It would have gained or led market share, and more games would have been made for it, including 3rd party developers who left Atari. Instead they sometimes did conversions of their games for Intellivision, without putting in the hours to do an upgrade and use its features.

    Between the Intellivision and Colecovision Flashbacks, I prefer the Colecovision Flashback as it has more simplistic, arcade-like games; Intellivision as a whole was a console meant to offer more, strategic, complex and realistic games, as such, the library aged worse compared to the other consoles of this era. Still, this plug-and-play offers enough good games as long as you can get it at a cheap price; my favorites are Shark! Shark! and Thunder Castle, but there are a few other games worth playing such as Buzz Bombers.

    Buzz Bombers is a 1 or 2 player game.
    Sharp Shot is great for very young children, and that's all. The only control you have is a fire button.
    Space Battle is not terribly difficult. But you need to play on the lower difficulty settings to get used to it.

    The change the version of Major League Baseball, I'm guessing because of copyright infringement.
    This version isn't as good as the last one, that baseball game on the original and television is still the best baseball game I've ever played for how simple it was.
    Hard to believe that Intellevision was the first 16-bit system.
    While better than Atari 2600 the graphics are kind of underwhelming for how much software they actually had to work with.

      Mattel sold the Intellivison brand to INTV Corp in 1984, so Mattel and Intellivision no longer have any connection and if the Flashback was going to have He-Man on it, they would have to pay Mattel a licensing fee.
