The turbo Chevy C10 project/restoration is taking forever, so today I decided to do some easy mods to one of the Hondas to make myself feel like I'm getting something done! The side benefit is I'm getting parts off the shelves and onto cars, and everything that comes off gets out of my shop and to the recycler/trash.
On a suggestion I decided to swap the other side rear disc brakes while the camera records. Off with the old drum brakes, on with the rear disc brakes!
Car is a 1994 USA Honda Civic Ex coupe. This car is always a pleasure to work on because so far, nothing is seized.
Next mod for this car is a CRV 2.0 B20 Swap.
Civic Disc Brake #RearDisc #BrakeConversion using oem parts from an acura integra, civic si, del sol si or better. I prefer this to #scarebird kit for several different reasons. - Авто/Мото
So efficient. You should do more vids like this, best I’ve seen. Sub’d
Thanks for the positive feedback and thanks for watching!!!
Lmao at the "Toe" voice overs hahaha
Good ear! Yes I lol when I listen to that back.
Great video, I wish I had a garage
Danny's DIY Auto repair 05 civic oh ya, a garage helps. But because you can walk away from a project I tend to drag them out.
Tried this on my new project. Instantly snapped the first two bolts i tried to loosen 🙃👍🏻
Sonova B eh? These cars are getting older and used parts can be rusty, I still cant believe they are 25 years old! My coupe is rust free, I just cut the rear fenders off my 95 HB. The underside looks mint, just the damn rear 1/4's on this one.
Nice video bro cool 😎
From (Desi Canadian vlogger) thanks

Just found this abit late, as I just did this on my cxi ek hatch. I also did front hubs as mine was 242 mm and changed to 262mm
👍 I have the same setup as yours on my ‘98. The beauty of that swap is you don’t need to swap the proportioning valve.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS nah I kept my prop valve stock. But is working fine. I did upgrade my brake booster though.
That’s interesting, Ive heard most people consider that interior part the worst/hardest.
Could you use the proportional valve from the Del Sol you got the disc brakes from?
voodoopowder yes so long as the del sol doesn’t have ABS
What is E brakes cables line u use? Delsol , integra ? Or the stock cable ? Nice vedeo direct details... not like others talks to much about themselves... and what they’re do tomorrow’s.. and such such ... make more video bud. And just wonder you did the swap for this car ?
Hi Johnny, thx. You have to use the E brake cables from a disc brake car because the end where it meets the calipers is different than the drum brake system. The del sol cables are a bit short but they still fit and function perfectly. I need to swap this car already!!! I'll livestream it when I do, hopefully very soon, if not this car my hatchback.
Teggy ebrake. Did this last week and the del sol line is just a bit short. Like maybe an inch
Yes, not perfect but they hold and releases fine. Did you get your sol cables working ok? What chassis did you put them in?
Hey man great video, I have a question, I have the 7th Gen and what cars would be comparable with mine to do disc brakes swap?
Hi. Either an 02/03 ep3 or a Canadian Acura 1.7el
02-03 Honda Civic si. 02-03 is a 4lug. If you convert to 5 lug I believe 02-06 acura rsx base
Hey man great video! This one is the most clearest and nicely explained.
I bought a 2006 honda civic ex 4 door. This car has drum brakes as well and I want to convert them to disk brakes. I dont know if it can done? If so what parts should I get and from what car?
Hi thanks. You want to get the similar year 2006-11 8th gen civic si or ex rear knuckles, complete with calipers, rotors, brake hoses and e brake cables. It’ll be easier than this swap, you can do it!
Thanks for the info kido. I can't wait to get those done :)
I have 99 ek hatch dx, using 99 teg LS trailing arms. So the teg cables will work? And brake lines all line up? Do I need to grab the prop valve out of the teg?
The 2dr Integra cables are a tad short but wrk just fine. The prop valve for a non abs integra is a 40/40, grab it **edit, grab the 40/40 valve in case you get an eg one day, those valves are about to become obsolete. For your ek get the front brakes along with the rear and run your stock prop valve.
Hey just ran into your channel I have a question. I have a 99 civic ex coupe and would like to convert to disc. If I get the trailer arm of the teggy would I be able to still use my aftermarket coilovers and lower control arms as well or would I have to change those as well. Also can I use the si brake cable?
angel gomez yes your coilover is fine, you reuse your ex lower control arm. Yes you use the 99 si brake cable for a perfect fit
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS like your channel just subscribe. What year trailer arm would be best to use
@@chicoleno007thanks for the sub! You can use any trailing arm from any integra from 99-00 and any civic or del sol with rear disc brakes newer than 1992. If your ex has ABS brakes you will want to get a setup that also has ABS, look for the abs wires.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS it has no abs. Its getting harder to find at junkyards.
@@chicoleno007 you're right about that, Where I am I also look at craigslist, autotrader and facebook marketplace. If I can get a good deal on the whole car I'll take the whole thing.
I have a 00 civic lx would i need to change the proportioning valve when i do the rear disc conversion?
For whatever reason the 96-00 only has one prop valve, so nothing to do. However I’d swap out the front knuckles/brakes to the larger ex/si for the most factory setup. If you check my ‘98 civic, that’s the setup I’m running now. But I’m likely going 5 lug with the awd conversion.
Are the brake booster, and brake master cylinder extremely nessesary? I get that the proportioning valve is mandatory since I will definitely be doing a ton of hard braking while racing, but I'm really skeptical about the brake master cylinder and brake booster.
Yes, I 100% agree with that. The 2 lines coming out of the master appear to be diagonally split in the proportioning valve. The size of master or booster will not affect brake balance. I used to swap them on everything only because I had a stockpile of parts, my present coupe and hatch are both running stock master and booster with the correct swap proportioning valve.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS that's awesome ! Do you feel any difference from the braking before to after the swap ?
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS subscribe to my RUclips channel I too will be doing a drum to disc brake conversion please subscribe it really appreciate if you'd watch my video. And give me some feedback
itachis Garage With discs there is less brake fade. Without the prop valve panic braking from 120+mph on the street or dragstrip was always super sketchy as rear gets light, the brakes lock up and it becomes all about keeping the rear from coming around. On ice it’s also very obvious after prop valve swap, especially braking in a turn, no prop valve swap in this situation you cannot panic stop, it’s all gentle threshold braking. Swap the valve and it’s s regular car again. Rear discs and the correct proportioning valve are worthwhile modifications, I highly recommend.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS so if you're just going for looks ; such as a slammed look always driving slow and steady the 4040 proportioning valve wouldn't really be nessesary but on a more intense battle ground the 4040 prop valve would definetly be an important asset to swap.
Hi is there anything wrong with going with the scare bird route ? This version looks way harder to do for me.
I would say everything is wrong with that kit. The scarebird is an additional $100 usd shipped in the USA. It’s takes way longer to install, you need to buy the big torx bit. And if ever you smoke a curb with a rear wheel you may need to straighten or replace that bracket rather then get another Integra part. It’s best to keep everything as factory Honda as you can. I ran into similar issues with my c10 brakes with every so custom it’s a nightmare to replace parts.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS thank you for your advice !
I know once you convert you need the low flow brake fluid valve for drums to high pressure flow for disc or you womy have any stopping power
Yes for these cars you need to make sure you get the correct or best proportioning valve. For the typical non abs rear brake 4th or 5th gen civic swap, if you don’t change the proportioning valve the rear brakes lock up prematurely. Not safe in poor weather.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS yeah man I working on a lil project get my 02 civic built up stable. And idk for engine k20a3 I really want to go with a b16 b18 for the lightweight and high rev
@@michaelsteuernagle3479 cool project. I’m a big fan of b series, I have a b16b and b18c5, keepers for sure. For the size of that car a k24/k20 would be fun all motor or even better with boost!
I have a 97 civic ex i want to do this to and just bought a 96 integra to swap the b18b1 in the civic. Is it a direct bolt on with the disc break set up or will i need to get other parts? Im not sure of the sub model of integra but i believe its a ls.
@kincaid stockman rear brakes are a direct bolt in, I’d check the master cyl size and swap it if different. Do both cars have abs? That engine swap will also be straight forward.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS ill chrck the mc this evening, Im not sure if theyre the same size. The integra has abs but the civic does not. And yeah the engine/trans and ecu are all a direct swap in.
kincaid stockman sounds like you have it under control, the prop valve is built into the abs unit. The civic is on the firewall, do some panic stopping and see if the rear locks up too early. I’ve heard but have not confirmed all the 96+ prop valves are the same.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS right on man. Thanks for the help.
Would I need to change prop valve on my 1997 ek1 hatchback I’m getting my rear discs from a 1998 4dr ek1 gli
We don’t have that trim level in N America. But, if it doesn’t have ABS, and being a hatch it should have the 9.5” front brakes. Your brake bias will be fine if you switch to the 10.2” fronts when you switch to rear discs.
The disc brakes looks like it’s from an Integra DA
Yes, same/same
Hey I have a ek sedan with the drums no abs. Which prop valve should I use and do u have a video doing it ?
moneyshot41 no abs, good. If you swap to the 10.2” front brakes or already have them then all is good, no prop valve change needed. The problem is running the 9.5” front brakes with rear discs in an ek, there is no OEM prop valve for that. Because of this I have the full em1 brake setup for my project Diirty FreeEK, I’ll swap it on a livestream soon.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS thanks my man I’m running stock fronts right now so I’ll have to find the front swap
GIZZMOTORSPORTS I’m assuming ill need si
master cylinder too ?
moneyshot41 you don’t need to change from 13/16” to 15/16” brake master cyl, it won’t have any effect brake bias. The bigger master cyl will slightly reduce pedal travel but also reduce pedal pressure. I say try the stock and see if you like it.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS appreciate the help my man
I was told i can use my stock EK trailing arm just swap the hub and spindle assembly?
Broken Bolt Garage that won’t work without buying aftermarket caliper mount brackets($$$)
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS mean some hubs on eBay, calipers if u can score some at salvage yard great if not buy em new new rotors and pads cause why not if ur swapping to disc. Point being the conversion can be done without swapping the whole trailing arm imo.
@@felixvalentin1618 reason is the drum trailing arm doesn’t have anything to bolt the caliper to. You need to spend a bunch of money on aftermarket brackets, and most guys will have to buy tools to get it all apart. Simplest to pay a hundred bucks or whatever and get everything you need with the whole trailing arms.
Wow so it is live I thought you would’ve like skip some parts because the video was like 18 minutes long you could actually do rear disc conversion that fast
If you hustle you can do both sides with cables and proportioning valve in an hour, lol.
Can you do a video on doing the disc brake swap with just removing the torx screws and not replacing the whole trailer arm
What parts did you already get? Are the integra trailing arms bent?
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS some people do the rear disk conversion with out replacing trailer arm I was posting it to the guy that said you dont need to replace the whole arm
Just wanted to see if someone can post a video of doing it that way
@@robertalicea5585 Hi Robert, what some people do that I do not understand.. if you go the route and buy the "Scarebird" or make your own caliper brackets you still do not need to remove the torx bolts on the trailing arms. That Honda spindle part attached with the torx was never sold separately from Honda, so you are forced to buy the whole arm anyway or buy used. In both cases you are getting the whole arm. Google Scarebird bracket, I think that's what you are after but honestly just get the whole used arms like I did in this vid :) I hope that helps, any other questions dont be afraid to ask. Please like and Sub for more Honda content from a Technicians point of view.
I wouldn’t recommend it. Either go with the scarebird or the full trailing arm swap (I’d recommend the full swap)
so the car is a civic 94 ex, where did the rotors and trailing arm come from? what year integra was it ?
also really liked how you got to do a point on everything, well done.
thanks Carlos, these trailing arms came from a del sol.
But you can get the disc brake/trailing arms from a 94-01 integra, the 90-93 integra will also work but I would stick to the newer 94-01 because they are newer and also the trailing arm bushing is a more common size than the 90-93.
Also a 92-95 civic si hb,
or a 99-00 civic si(canadian sir) will work.
awesome, thank you. I have a 95 civic ex which I along with a friend removed the auto tranny with d16z engine to a b20b manual. next is this; the drum to disc brake conversion. I'm going to go to junkyard and hunt for the trailing arms, along with the disc's and cables. Is there anything else that I am missing? By the way I really like your content keep up the good work and stay consistent with your content you seem to know what youre doing and do it. New sub for life !
carlos Leon that's for the feedback! Much appreciated. I would definitely check to see that the calipers aren't dragging, and it'll be a bonus if the trailing arm bushings aren't seized. You're coupe should be non abs, if you find a non abs integra grab the proportioning valve and even the brake master and booster if they are cheap enough. People say it's fine without the proportioning valve but they must not be braking hard or in bad weather conditions, it's a very good idea to get the proper proportioning valve.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS will make sure to get everything i need thanks boss !
I got to the passenger side and the inner main bushing bolt backed out and then started spinning
That’s really bad. This happened to my buddy on his Integra Type R. As a last resort he cut a hole in the floor. I would explore all other options first, like cut the bolts, remove arms, drill and retap. Or, just try and put it all back together until you have time to deal with it.
Did you have to replace the prop valve?
not yet, not on this car but I will once I put it back on the road. The prop valve replacement is a must if you drive in wet or icy or snowy roads. Without it the back end locks up before the front and you may spin out. On my last drag Honda on dry roads when brake hard from 110mph+ I always had my hands full, I strongly recommend whatever prop valve Honda put on the similar brake setup that you are recreating. If anyone tells you different they aren't going fast and braking hard enough.
Swapped out the #proportioningvalve to the 40/40 piece. Brakes like it should, highly recommended!
Do you know if this would be the same for 2002?
Ty Smithhart essentially the same job for your 2002 except you want to get the parts from a 2002-2003 civic EP3 hatchback, if in Canada you can use Acura 1.7 EL parts. If you want 5 lug you can look at newer EP3 or RSX
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS Thanks for the reply. Subbed
Hey what year civic was this I'm gonna do one off a hatch off an Integra
h22sparkle this is a 92-95 although it is the same job and parts for civics from 1988-2000. The only thing that may vary is e-brake cable length.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS do I really need the whole hub or can I use my existing one and just take off everything that's on the other hub that I'm getting the parts off of?
h22sparkle you want to get the whole thing from the auto wrecker. Or get the whole integra and swap engine too!
GIZZMOTORSPORTS I don't do all of that I don't need the motor if I have a swap
Is that all it is ? I always thought you had to change brake lines and valves etc ..
Andi Sanchez that’s all it is but I do recommend to change the proportion valve if you drive on snow or ice or are racing. For grandma driving on dry roads it will work perfectly fine and nobody will know the difference. There is likely a Honda proportion valve for your setup that will work well or you could go aftermarket adjustable. What car do you have?
GIZZMOTORSPORTS is there any oem valve that will do or the only answer is aftermarket ? I have a 00 ex and I’m looking at getting a 00 si rear disc
Andi Sanchez yes! You should have abs so use the one from the US 99/00 SI with abs. If for some reason you do not have ABS then use the 99-00 us civic si(Canadian sir) prop valve from a non abs car, but more likely you will need to find an Integra Prop valve from a non abs car. They both use the same size brakes that you will be and the cars are about the same weight.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS awesome i appreciate it ! Thanks for your time
Hello I got an 03 civic lx I want to do a conversion what should I do ??
Hello. For your 2003 to stay 4 lug you want to get the parts from a 2002-2003 Civic EP3 hatchback, if in Canada you can use Acura 1.7 EL parts. Or if you want 5 lug get the parts from a newer EP3 or RSX.
Ok thank you I appreciate
Ok so do I get trailer arms with the rotors caliper all together ?
@@funnyboygundi6699 exactly, get all of that.
My rear swap came out of a 96 integra and it has a orange plug on both sides anybody know where that goes to in a 96-00 civic coupe
Drew Ske that would be for the ABS sensor, does your civic have ABS? If not just tie them up or cut the wire off.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS ok thanks I will look in 2 and see if the civic comes with ABS thanks
The E break line didn’t reach from the disk I need help ahaha I have a ex civic 1997 and I swap them with 1997 integra :(
The wheelbase is essentially the same, it should bolt right up, move the brackets around on the cables?? If you were using the 9" too short del sol cables I would have said don't use all the ebrake cable brackets if thats what it takes. Are you sure the cables are from that car? Very strange.
GIZZMOTORSPORTS I got it! Lol thank you
Fantastic!!
The integra cables are too short you gotta use Del sol Si or Civic Si cables
You mean del sol are the shortest
Is this possible on a 01 Civic ex sedan? If so what parts would I need?
Hi. It's a similar job for your 2001 except you want to get the parts from a 2002-2003 civic EP3 hatchback, if in Canada you can use Acura 1.7 EL parts. If you want 5 lug you can look at newer EP3 or RSX
instructions were unclear, i now have drums in the front
It looks rusty.
Lucas Martínez Parra yes quite a bit of surface rust on the rotors, calipers and caliper brackets from sitting. I was able to machine the rotors, clean up and paint the rest. I'm happy nothing was seized, calipers, sliders, cables.
Cool, dude. Nice work.
Some people like to do things the hard way. Thumbs down.
I did the one side in 18 minutes talking to a camera, it’s not hard. If there’s an easier way I’m interested, and don’t say scarebird, that’s just dumb.
Hi, I have a question. I have a Honda Civic ek3 ABS, and I want to fit there rear disc brakes from Honda Civic 6g English version also has ABS will it work? also need proportion valve?
Jozef Kováč the Canadian SiR had the parts you want. Does the ek3 have 9,5 or 10.2” front brakes? Because on the non abs ek cars they ALL run a 40/40 valve. So if you upgrade front and rear at the same time in theory the valve should still be good.
@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS my ek3 has 10.2 "front brakes, and also has ABS, I have a Honda Civic with D15Z6 engine
