- Quick Tip Rear Trailing Arm - Don't screw up your car when doing a disc brake swap
By Brian Gillespie
Rear disc conversions for your EF, EG or EK are getting harder and harder to come by. They came on a limited number of Civics and of course the DC2 Integra. Every time I go to the salvage yard I find I am too late to grab the discs conversion of the 1 or 2 cars there that had them.
Rear discs also came on the DA Integra, but not so fast! Using that rear trailing arm means changing the car's rear track width and that means the wheel is pushed out toward the fender. If I am trying to fit maximum rubber on rear of my car, I don't want that. Those trailing arms also use a different rear bushing than the EK, EG, EF and DC2 that has long been discontinued from Honda. Good luck finding those rear trailing arms with good bushings.
But there is a way to still use the discs brakes from the DA(DB) Integra and we'll show you how!

Hi. I’m here to not mess up my car.
😂😂😂😂 mine has been disabled for a year now .

@@VTECAcademy hey I have a 96 ek hatch I just got my trailing arms from a 2000 integra coupe what e brake cables do I use 😅
Great advice. I always knew the disc hubs bolted up but I didn't know the 89-93 Integra trailing arms were wider. I have da9 arms on my ek and 225 tyres always rub slightly.. now I know a solution.
Thanks brian
Crazy feels like theres allot of lil secrets with these hondas im still learning about everyday, its awesome
Right? Thanks for watching.
You just saved me a lot of money with your older video. Thank you!
Glad we could help!
This is a great tip!!! Rear disc breaks is our next upgrade for our 99 ex coupe !!! So glad I found this video
Glad I found this my driver side dc2 arm is bent so now I’m going to convert such a waste of money and time I went through but atleast here’s some hope thanks for posting this really glad you included the sizes of the torx screws
I remember buying parts from you guys at Honda Auto Salvage. Congrats on your success
Always so knowledgeable and providing us with what we need to know!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this tip. I did not know this glad I swapped mine off my eg hatch! Won’t be using those again
Just broke loose those T50 bolts on the rear spindle on a 1990 Acura Integra. I lmixed some ATF transmission fluid with some acetone (50/50) mix and let it soak in for 2 days, cleaned up the area and then applied heat to the bolts with a propane torch, dwell time approx 30 seconds and then used a 15" breaker bar. Worked quite well.
Awesome! thank for all that u guys do😁
been doing this for ages saves time at wrecker fighting with lca bolts
I’ve used DA rear trailing arms on multiple cars 👍
Love these types of vids!
I have DA trailing arms on my 90 civic DX. They work fine. 205/40/15 tires
My favorite channel 👌
Brian the man
We put all that stuff on the drum arm. Same same
As someone who is very close to doing this swap, i look forward to this video. I havea 90 Civic DX hatchback and i have complete DA trailing arms along with a 40/40 proportioning valve. I need to get better calipers and I'd like to get a bigger master cylinder and braided lines. I run 205/50/15 on 15x7.5 +25mm and i do not want a wider track as i already am cutting it close with clearance. Can't wait to see the video.
I did it on mine no issues at all same ser up as you are doing
@@3E37 i also did it on one of my older hatches but i wasn't running as wide of a tire or low of an offset as i am now. I already rolled my quater panels and added a slight amount of negative camber so i don't want the track getting wider.
What would be an alternative to running your set up? CRX Si or EF EX disc brakes? I have my DA rear brakes ready, but reconsidering due to widen track.
Did that to all my civics I even have a video of a whole how to but never edited it. Best part is it's cheaper.
Edit that thing and post it up!
@@beezowdoodoozoppitybopbopb9488 One day I promise, or I can just post it raw and uncut lol.
Hey francisco i have a question.? So you'll basically pull a spindle of of a 90-93 integra . It will bolt up in the ek rear trailingarm(drumbrake)? Is that right.? Mine is specifically a ek sedan .
@@mikeeganzon9789 you need spindles from 94-01 integra. Or if you decide you want to get conversion brackets and keep the drum style spindles there is a company called scarebird that makes them. Have used them and they work but I prefer the factory hardware.
@@franciscogarcia-xt5wn oh ok ithought we can use the spindle from the 90-93 just like what vtec academy said in the video . So ot should be of off a 94-01? Then just rather bolt up the whole trailing arm then.? Right.? Thanks for the info tho.
Got my set up a del sol. Gonna put it on my del sol.
Wow thats very interesting. I thought wider is better but i see not on fwd. Will make a note of that
I'm thinking on an EF, I might use rear drums from my 98 EX as a bit of an upgrade without too much hassle
Great video Thank you sir!!
Great little segment, the TNC CRV will be getting a rear disc conversion in the future.
Thanks! CRV is a perfect daily.
VTEC Academy I have a question... my crx had rear disk conversion when I got it (dx model) so idk if I have crx rear, 94+ teg or DA rear brake conversion on it. I do know it have DA front knuckles. So... is there any way to figure out which set I might have? I plan on tracking it so I would like to avoid widening the track of the rear end. I’m glad you posted this video because I never thought about that... Thanks Brian!
This is what we needed in the early and mid 2000's lol damn it
Oh wow that is very interesting. If I knew this I would have just gotten the dc2 spindle on my 97 ek trailing arm instead of sourcing the entire arm 😑
Awesome video, subbed
Im going to be using DA rear trailing arms on my ek coupe so lets see how this goes
Any hardcore road racer will recognize that circuit monsters shirt !!! I still have my Super Og one lol
thanks for the tip
I used a DA trailing arm set on my ef sedan and it did in fact widen the track. I ended up putting my old arms back on and switched my spindles. Wished I had watched this video first! Would have saved me a ton of work.
so direct bolt up of spindle to ef drum trailing arms with no issues? what about e-brake cable? still used the da one kept the ef one?
@@toddp5122 i kept the da cables on there, it worked fine. Spindles bolted right up. Be careful of stripping the torx bolts, hit them with a torch before trying to loosen them.
@@sethallison5682 hey Seth so I have a 90 ef sedan and picked up some 91 DA disc trailing arms yesterday. I don’t want to put them on now because of the widen track. Can I strip the DA arms and put the components on my EF arms? Or do I need to get some stripped EK arms like he says in the video?
@@Otsp922 I used my ef arms and it worked totally fine 👍
Great Stuff Brian!!! Much Love!! Stay True to the Honda's!!
#vtecacademy
I got a eg but put on 91 integra arms with 2003 si rotor disc and rsx caliper it works
A lot of those calipers are interchangeable. It does affect the brake cables you use and sometime the brake lines.
Hi.. good day,
I'm from México
I like your Channel.
Dónde puedo conseguir esa pieza donde van los baleros?
What do you guys recommend for a replacement bolt over the T50? Or do you guys use the T50 bolts again? Also recommended torque specs for installing back the rear spindle bolts?
If you only knew how scarce rear disc trailing arms are outside of US (europe), its insane, u could make a fortune start making some :D
If only I had seen this a few months back when I did my conversion 😂🤦♂️
Hey, we tried to tell ya. This video is from 2020!
I've done this swap many times. The disc setup can also be found on 93-95 civic si hatchbacks and 93-95 civic ex sedans.
Dallas Thierauf as well as the Del Sol Si and VTEC models.
Dallas Thierauf do 95 trailing arms bolt up to a 97 em1? I know I’ll need si cables and lines + MC
Febreeze Ads no such thing as a 97 em1, at least not in the states. Em1’s are 99/00 only and they come with rear disc’s from the factory. If you’re asking about any other ek chassis, then yes, they will bolt up. If you’re doing the swap, I suggest swapping the front brakes as well and the prop valve, but it truly depends on what trim level car you have.
What about 93 integra rear trailing arms would they fit a 00 civic coupe?
Would the Del Sol e brake cables be too short for a CRX?
Thanks for these videos! As soon as I get a few more of the required tools, I'll be totally stripping my B-swapped EG hatch and building it back up from scratch. On the list is a small/mid-size turbo and some tall-ish gears for a grand touring build. Aiming for balance between long distance comfort and sporty performance when called on. Full A/C, disc conversion, comfy suspension, and extra thermal and sound insulation for a quiet ride. What are your thoughts on taller final drives such as the MFactory 3.471 final drive for my B18C5 with LS transmission? It should be a bit shorter overall than the stock VX gears but still afford sub-3000 RPM highway cruising.
Long gears need a torquey motor. Turbo is probably a good idea.
What wheel size you recommend for the 90 -93 arms for street use?
I got a 93 trailing arms on my crx. Had to roll my fenders.
You used 93 integra rear trailing arms?
Thanks og!!!!!
Do this push yr wheels out further than the front like there are spacers
Cause mine is push out and the wheels are the same offset
Ok for clarity, the spindles came from a 90-93 integra, or can you use ANY integra spindle?
So, disk spindle bolts right up to drum trailing arm?
Dope!!!
I found a rear trailing arm off an integra but the metal around the 24mm spindle nut is pretty much rusted out. Would the remaining 4 T50 screws in the front be durable enough to drive on?
I'm using the DA trailing arms, I like that it widened my rear, now I'm trying to figure out the front and I'm looking at EK arms to see if they're slightly longer. If not then I'll just have to make my own which isn't a problem for me
Are you trying to widen the track in the front?
@@VTECAcademy yeah, atleast 1" wider overall than what it is now. Forgot to mention this is for a 95 hatchback.
@@Elver_Galarga_jugo I don't know if there is a compatible wider knuckle with the same geometry. The other option would be wider upper and lower control arms which I know don't exist.
@@VTECAcademy that's what I was afraid of, I already have 97 Ex knuckles for the brake upgrade. Guess I'll have to make my own. That kinda helps since I'd like to have something with caster adjustments and I'd like to make lowers that are half tubular and a bit longer
I've actually got disc brakes advertised off of an ef, and put them on my ej2. I don't know if it's perfect or not, but it worked
Those will work. The E brake cables may be a little short though.
@@VTECAcademy yes the cables were short, had to used some si cables, hardest part was connecting to the hand brake lever. The mounting bolt, didn't wana fit, so I had to make it fit lol
Will the 93 Integra hub spindles work with the 92-95 Civic’s
So just to make sure, I can use the DA spindle, dust plate and hub right onto my ek trailing arm that has a current drum set up?
Hi i have a 2021 and im intrested. In the brembo one i not shore is it good or bad is honda civic sport
does anyone know if the dc rear spindle is the exact same as the da rear spindle?
is the trailing arms that come in the 95 Civic Ex ABS the same as the integra? Mine has a gnarly bend on it from a previous accident, I’ve been looking to replace it
So you only need to swap the spindle in order to swap from drum brakes to discs? Or am I being stupid?
Do you guys know if this works on the ef wagon? I want to do this to mine but i’ve heard the trailing arms on them are different
I was wondering what do I need to get to do a rear disk swap on a 2004 civic lx (es1,em2) ? Any advice would be grateful ‼️
Nice
Going with fcs trailing arms
@VTECHAcadamy this is good stuff i was wondering if this could be done but never looked into it but technically you can take the spindles out of newer accords with disc brakes and put them on whatever non disc brake trailing arms you have as well id think but the awesome thing again about the accords (Carter) is cb7 cd and cg chassis is there is a disc brake version of all of them that just swaps in directly ive done this on a cb7 90 lx chassis and did the whole subframe so i got disc brakes and a sway bar i could have just done trailing arms but i bought a whole Barely crashed in the front 93 ex chassis for 130$ so i used the whole rear. I eventually fixed that car and put it all together with 3 other cars so it was all different colors but clean(waxed and good paint) and looked like 3 cars none the less swapped a healthy engine in and it ran great all ways surprised people. I even mis shifted from 5 to 2 on a down shift and thought i messed it up because it was misfiring after that turned out it was just a valve lash adjustment nut backed off on the exhaust side even so it wasn't really even missing power just misfiring and i was in the middle of a 300 mile drive so i kept driving got home and found the nut in the head still. I didnt figure this out right away i took the engine out so i could use the transmission in another car but when i did figuer this out i was stoked. Sorry for blabbin on every week and wasting so much of your guys time haha but ya i like accords a little too much haha
You made those torx seem like quick work. Hah. Yeaaaa
Like a boss.
I have a 88 integra ls 5spd coupe(red)
All around disc, can I swap it out with 98 gsr front and rear
I have a 96 ek hatch and I for my 2000 integra coupe trailing arms what e brake cables do I use
Is anyone having this issue after doing rear disk conversion. Right side e break cable seems to be pulled up more than the left when applying the e break ? Also the right rear caliper seems to show more wear then the left rear caliper. ( 00 civic lx sedan with 98 integra Ls trailing arm and Em1 E break cables )
Am I late? I'm here now with a like and sub!
Come anytime!
What do you recommend for my Sedan 90 ef please?
Does anyone know if it matters if they come off an abs or no abs model integra? putting on a crx hf
It does not.
Do you need to change the master cylinder on a 2000 civic ex when swaping to rear brakes from a 94-01 integra brakes ?
On and EX Civic? No.
I got a delsol which was a 1.6 d-serie SI with drumbrakes at the rear(1992model) . I bought it with a rear diskbrake swap and the system looks fresh👌
Also swapped the d serie for a B serie, but my brake-system is bad.
I got 5200 Nm front, but only 550Nm a the rear🤔 and handbrake is 17/1800Nm so my pads/disks are free and good.🤔
Im thinking master brake clillinder? that it's a drumbrake version so not enough force?🤔
I have just done the same swap did you resolve the issue? I imagine it was the prop valve?
@@NGCSH187 Nope.. it was the single "plate braketester" that was the cause of the bad results.. I talked to a buddy that had a 4wheel brake tester, so i went to his shop and tested it.. and the results were 5500 front, 1250/1300 at the rear wheels😁👌
My setup is original masterbrake cillinder, original reardrum brakeforce splitter. So basicly OEM rear drumbrake with a disk brake swap.
I was wondering if you can do 5 lug oddysey knuckle swap on a ef??? How would that be possible??
Im waiting for that topic also
Are the parking brake cables the same for the ek if you converting from drums to disc?
No, you will need to cables from the car yogurt th calipers.
Hey please school me how can you tell what transmission you have???
So I can just get the da rear spindle and bolt that onto ed6 drum trailing arm?
Did this work??
Real quick I have an eg and just picked up some rear trailing arms from a del sol si
They look the same as the integra trailing arms I think one side actually had a different part number which is weird when the other had the same... Um but my question is why don't del sol trailing arms ever get brought up
Is this a no go for me?
Tia
Mainly because they are rare. The work just fine, but the brake cables are too short for any other car but the 88-91 CRX.
Hey Brian, I have a 91 EF that i did the rear conversion with DA trailing arms and yes, the rear is wider now. However, I bought new discs, calipers, and brake pads for the DA set up and im short on cash and im looking to re-use those. Could I go to the salvage yard and get DC or EK trailing arms and use the spindle and brake set up from my DA arms on the EK or DC?
You ca put the DA spindles on any 88-00 Civic trailing arms.
If it's harder to find DC2 trailing arms than the spindles then where did the spindles come from?
You can buy Spindles.. from a DC2.. and use your eg or ek trailing arms.. and that will a replica of full dc2 trailing arms with the spindles.. if should be easier buying spindles from a 94-01 integra.. than looking for the whole thing and used.. better go with new full set all new.
Hi VA any tips how to modify front disc brake for honda civic ef?
There is a video on that in the Backmarker playlist.
What proportioning valve should I use to feel the difference?I have a 97 Civic DX
It's unlikely you will be able to tell any difference based on feel no matter which prop valve you use.
I just picked up a ed 4th gen civic sedan. to me this means that i should be able to go to the wreckers grab a disk rear end from a civic or integra and swap it all onto my drum trailing arm
Correct.
and the brake cables too i believe
What rotors and calipers would fit this setup, do I need da/90-93 integra ones and if so what ebrake cable fit those
Could I use an em1 ebrake cable
I have a question when you do this conversion on EK do you use the E brake cables and the caliper hoses from integra? Please let me know I would appreciate your information. Thank you
Yes. Those work fine.
@@VTECAcademy 💪👍🔥
Thank you. Would a Civic EG del sol rear disk trailing arms fit a Civic EG ones?
Yes
So I got rear spindles from a DA, but I'm missing one of the calipers. Can I use a DC caliper on a DA spindle? (Going on my 89 Civic si)
Also, can I use an EF wheel hub on a DA spindle?
I'd grab tow DC calipers. The brake lines attach differently. Try to keep it consistent.
Noted Eg spindle smaller fha DC the hub won't fit
Do you know what rear toe link I’m suppose to use if I do the disc brake conversion on an ef sedan?
Stock
I have a 2000 Honda civic ex and I want to do rear disc brake conversion so I can keep the original trailing arm and just get the spindle and the rear brake parts from a integra and that's all?
Yes
What's the difference with switching the trailing arm vs using scarebird conversion kit?
You can use the Scarebird conversion on the stock spindle to use DA or DC Integra calipers and discs. You can also use the Fastbrakes conversion if you want to have a larger rear disc.
Can you give recommendations for the T50 bit and associated tools/extensions to remove the spindle from the arm?
I use a reg t50 bit on my ridgid impact gun. With a 3/8 to 1/2” adapter.
Heat the heads of the fasteners and let the heat travel down to the threads. This loosens the lock tite and then zap em off with the impact gun.
I second for heating the T50 bolts. I did this recently. I bought a small torch kit and heated the bolts and I removed just with a breaker bar but I did one bolt at a time and the bolts came off easy.
What about 99-00 EM1 rear trailing arms on eg hatch? Will it widen rear track width?
No, that would be fine.
I’ve got a 95 civic coupe and bought a rear disk trailing arm set for an SI civic of a similar generation. It should work I think, but if anyone has to say other wise please say so!
It’ll work.
Question.
Why is disk and caliper better than drum?
Mostly easier maintenance.
Will the DA rear spindles bolt on to my stock EF (ED) rear trailing arms or do I need to get EK trailing arms?
I’m under the assumption that they should bolt right on. If so that’s a great mod!! No one ever talked about this in the Forums
@@Freestoner707 yes they do, i have seen a video by garage built hondas confirming this.
good info! Is there any way to use the stock rear disc from an eg or ek(96-00 coupe or sedan even?) on an ef?
Oh yeah, those bolt right on.
93 del sol
So the spindle have to be from a 90 to 93 only? Or the spindle from a 94 to 2000 works too if I find one? Please let me know.
They all work, but if you have something otyher than the 90-93 Integra you can use the whole trailing arm as is.
thanks, is there a 5 lug conversion thats as easy for ek?
Used Type R stuff.
Can we get a link where to buy the spindle I can’t find any
car-part.com
So what you're saying is I can strip my rear trailing arms on my 2000 civic dx that are originally disc brakes and replace them with DA rear disc brake hub and spindle?
That is what we are saying.
Why not use a 99-00 civic si rear disc brakes???
You can, but they’re rare. DC Integras are easier to find.
