This is without a doubt the best DIY for brake drums. I was using other videos and got so lost, ended up stripping it all down again and followed this and did it in 15 minutes.
You make this job look easy! To anyone sizing up this task, I've done everything on cars over the past 25 years.. except drum brakes. That said, I discovered there is no amount of cussing in humanity to curse this dreadful experience. I would gleefully drop my steering rack, or replace the synchros in my transmission over doing this horrid task ever again. I hate letting anyone touch my cars for service but I think this is one job I would take to a brake shop to have done to hold on to my sanity.
@@backyardchevy328 It seemed straightforward to me. I removed the wheels and drums to inspect today, and I'm down to less than 1.5mm brake shoe thickness. My drums on the inside look smooth. I don't see any leaking seals, and the springs all look good. I didn't check the horseshoe clamp, but I plan to reuse it as you showed. Crossing my fingers that it all goes well. The new shoes are only $22. New drums are only about $30, and they certainly are easy to replace (I got the M12x1.25mm bolts).
That was so professional! I contact Honda service techs, and they couldn't answer my questions after I went over the procedure in my Haynes manual. I did my front disc brakes and brake fluid exchange after watching other videos. I'm hoping my drums are still fine and I can just clean them with brake cleaner. Thank Heavens for people like you!!!
Very well done comprehensive video. It takes you through each step and shows you a few tricks to accomplish them. His speech is clear and easy to understand. Absolutely one of the best DIY videos I have seen.
@@backyardchevy328 that top spring was very hard to put back you made it look so easy, but in the end I finished the job properly thanks to your video. I still have a problem with the ebrake, like after adjusting it was going 5 clicks but after using the car a bit again went to 8 clicks and is not holding, I adjusted again but still not happy is not holding the car if I put in drive and press the gas, should I adjust the cable from inside?
I'm going to reiterate what others have said. This is THE best video I have watched for rear brake shoe & brake drum replacement. Lighting, picture quality, editing, tips & safety precautions... all in this video. I have included the link in my online maintenance journal for future reference! Subscribed!
On my 2014 Civic ( 0:45 ) The bolt size for the bolt to break the seized drum off of the hub is M12 X 1.25mm 35mm length (bought them at Advance Auto Parts)
I was putting long spring above the adjuster lever into the wrong hole and wondering why it didn’t have much tension on it at all and why the adjuster level wouldn’t seat properly, was so frustrating wondering what I could possibly be doing wrong, rewatched your video and realized I wasn’t putting the other end of the spring in the right hole, realized what I was doing wrong and grabbed some tiny vice grips and struggled but got it to go in the correct hole and then the adjuster level sat correctly. Lol it’s so great when you finally realize the simple thing your doing wrong and get it corrected, thanks again

'Spent about an hour after watching another video trying to do this without success. Yours is a much easier, simpler method and helped me finish this once frustrating task. Thanks so much.
Thank you for the video!!! Awesome! Explained perfectly and really clear shot of what to do. Looks like a huge pain compared to disc brakes but do-able now with the help!
Great video overall. Clear instructions and good video work. One item though. I could not get the top main spring off/on using his method. No doubt he's much stronger than me. For those who find it difficult to remove and replace the spring... In order to stabilize the brake shoes, I strung several zip ties together and tightened them around the circumference of the shoes. You make this look super easy. For anyone attempting this repair, it's definitely challenging, but not impossible. Thank you. This was an excellent detailed description for the Civic drum brake service. I really appreciate your clarity and all the tips and explanations. At the end, I thought it would be best to back the adjuster off a bit more to remove all drag (but still be super close) since I always thought the shoes should not be in contact with the drums (unlike pads that are supposed to drag lightly on rotors) until you hit the brakes (and the auto-adjuster will keep it just off the drums). Do you feel it is best to leave a little drag?
Thank you🙂 well when u adjust and it free spins but u can begin to hear the slight drag is best..but if u get it close the adjuster will adjust the rest if need be, so u can back it off a lil if u prefer...both are good to me
Hi I like to watch you video you show very good slow and step by step so people can understand plus me I’m appreciate you have a good technique thank you again god bless you 👍👌

So glad I found your how-to. Doing this next week on my car. Excellent video! Crystal clear steps and patient explanation covering exactly how to do it. Thank you!
One piston of the caliper came out and I had some fluid running off. But stopped when put the piston back on. Do I need to top up somewhere? Did air get in the system? It didn't feel so tight, but there was no sign of leakage before. Thanks
The wheel cylinder on the rear? or the caliper from the front brakes? Either way, yea it would get air in the system that way..so youll want to add fluid and bleed the brake caliper or wheel cylinder of any air that did get in

Excellent vid! Great camera work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you🙂
One piston of the caliper came out and I had some fluid running off. But stopped when put the piston back on.
Do I need to top up somewhere? Did air get in the system?
It didn't feel so tight, but there was no sign of leakage before.
Thanks
The wheel cylinder on the rear? or the caliper from the front brakes? Either way, yea it would get air in the system that way..so youll want to add fluid and bleed the brake caliper or wheel cylinder of any air that did get in
@@backyardchevy328 Sorry, my wrong term.
The rear piston that pushes the shoe out.
How do you bleed the air out of them?
@@troubauk im actually working on a video for that right now..well its more for a brake flush and bleed procedure..it should be out this weekend
