Man as a caster for the current competitive scene it does sadden me how it used to be compared to now.
Also that demo mode, the things I'd do to get that again....the analytics I could on Competive would be a wet dream.
I would love to see you do a part two to this going over the current competitive scene, what there is. ESB have done a great job on a Rush tournament getting companies like Samsung involved (don't forget the LAN event they hosted). There are still active leagues from T4 all the way to T16 across all 3 platforms. Visibility of the scene is one major factor as to why dice doesn't bother imo.

Hey there! I appreciate the kind words. That is a great idea - Maybe I will make a video about the current competitive scene!
My knowledge of what competitive play exists for BFV is extremely limited, largely since its all on console. Quite frankly, short of the ESB youtube page, ive had trouble finding vods and other information of what exists. I greatly appreciate the work you and the ESB guys do for competitive BFV, and you are absolutely right, DICE doesnt promote or support BF esports at all. (They did ages ago)
Maybe you could email me some more information about the current state of comp BFV? Id love to learn more about it and how active it is. As a PC guy, Id be happy to dip my toes into casting it, but the comp scene is pretty dead here.

Great and insightful video on an unexplored topic. I have a few questions and inquiries and would greatly appreciate your response:
    1) A common talking point I hear is that the BF series has become too casual starting with BC/BF3/BF4/BF1/BFV. Do you agree with this or not? Do older BFs really take more skill or is has there been a reverse trend?
    2) What would the minimum required features be in order for BF3 to be attract the general competitive population of BF2/BF2142? Can BF3 even be considered a true successor to BF2 with all of these features missing?
    3) I noticed that BC2 was not mentioned in the video. Did 8v8 rush not provide a competitive scene or were certain game mechanics like destruction too anti-competitive?
    4) Comparing BF2 with BF3/BF4 fighter jets and helicopters, which ones took more skill to become proficient at? Were the differences in hours needed to improve noticeable or negligible? I generally don't play with air vehicles so idk despite playing a lot on all of these games.

    • @GravityBFTV
      @GravityBFTV  4 года назад +2

Hey. Thanks for the questions! Ill do my best to answer.
      1) The answer to this is yes, the BF games have become more "casual" over time, but to me that falls less on player skill or the skill ceiling of a game and more the lack of competitive options for newer battlefields. Remember, competitive is the complete antithesis of casual. Not having competitive modes or tools by default makes a game more casual since there isnt any outlet for the other. I would also argue that with battlefield games being increasingly focused toward console gamers as well as a long extended campaign system, the time and resources, hell even the attempt, to properly include competitive options gets put on the back burner.
As far as skill ceilings go, the variables between each game are so numerous that i couldnt possibly offer a concise response to that other than: There are more important problems to deal with first.
      2) By any standard measure, there is no reason to argue against BF3 being the successor to BF2. Yea, of course things are drastically different in BF3 and features are missing, but the community at large was never going to embrace BF2 forever. As a side note, a comparison might be drawn to Starcraft:BW and Starcraft:2 - It's been argued the former was the drastically superior competitive game, and the latter was weaker with respect to gameplay mechanics that were changed. This is my opinion as well. Now, SC2 was MADE for competitive, while BF3 at least held onto the critical features for comp (Mostly), but they are nonetheless the successors.
BF3 did once have a thriving competitive scene, it was just different and had a much shorter lifespan. The features that were necessary for competitive BF3 are still there. The thing it would need the most is a working spectator tool. But in all honestly, given the date and current player count, there is almost ZERO chance you could convince enough former players, let alone current players, to compete in anything except maybe 4v4 rush.
      3) I make a habit to not speak about things i dont have knowledge of, and as i barely played BC2 I dont have knowledge of its competitive legacy. To my knowledge it existed, but i cannot offer any specifics. That is a question for any competitive BC2 player.
      4) Each game offered something different in the area of Jets/Helos. Helos in BF2 were drastically different from how they play in BF3/4, as the TV missile works completely different to how it worked in 2. The missile was also much stronger in 2. That being said, the thing that makes a helo strong isnt necessarily its pilot or weapons, but the counters to it, and in that regard it is definitively more difficult to use helos in BF4 due to the amount of tools and vehicles which can counter them. This makes them play more passive, and puts a far higher skill demand on both the pilot and gunner to do well.
As for jets, I am no expert but have used them enough across all games to argue that those of bf4 are the most difficult to play, once again because of the amount of counters, but more so due to the significant nerfs made to them from BF3 to BF4. BF2 Jets were insanely powerful, however, there was much luck involved there, from hoping your flares and heatseekers worked to the limited draw distance.
Hope that answers your questions :)

Dude there is so much facts in all u say man I always heard about all of these some how but never this accurate I thank u for giving us such a great insight of what BF comp was back in 1942 to BF3 days was and I also want to thank you for console Community for acknowledging it and and making it a point in one of your steps for comp to happen on BF in which it should be supported with equity with PC. As Far as I know as a comp players since BF4 PS3 2015 comp has existed on console since Bad Company 2 and it peaked at BF3 and BF4, we still were able to held some thing with BF1 but BFV has been a completé challenge having the first year to play Squad CQ on pub servers to then have this worthless Community Games I feel console Community could die in next game if all what u say or at least half of it its not in the first 3 months of the game or at release for better.
Also looking back at your comment of BF World tournament u talked about being online I really miss competing against players from really Far regions like Australia or Japan those communities on console have been decimated cuz of the lack of Lenient Latency or Lack Compensation which was default until BF4 and then a server options to have it on BF1 its really sad I can't compete with closer neighbor from Brazil living in Central América cuz of a 160 ping limit gap that forces u to lead ur shots and actually make hitreg worst for even low ping players. I miss how natural BF comp was it could easily comp from a pub team going against other in pubs to then try to prove each other in a private server then to scalate and discover more and more from this underworld at least thats my case.
Amazing video pls I know this may get hate on the reddit but post it I feel its time for them to know what they forgot or try to ignore.

EA took the approach of dumbing the game down to appeal to the lesser common denominator. Its always about money. Skilled players push the players who aren't as good out of the game.
What is unfortunate is that they have been unable to do both. Counter Strike does both.
EA isn't very smart because it is the lack of a high skill ceiling in BF games that leads nobody to want to watch the game on Twitch. I would like to see them realize that there is a legitimate Business Model in making a game that appeals to Competitive players again. Let the general popularity be created by people wanting to be like the really good players, like Counter Strike.

battlefield 2 with bots was my first fps experience and i played it for so long on my parents pc. Then around 2009, my parents got me battlefield 2 complete collection where i could play online on the family pc. It took me forever to figure out how to play online but it was so worth it. bf2 being my first online experience was so cool and i enjoyed playing it for so long where i played for years on end. Then i learnt about mods and played tons of them. Espically in lebanon where they had cracked battlefield 2 copies with tons of mods installed. Sure it was illegal but i enjoyed them so much lol. I even picked up the map editor for abit and modified some of the flags/vechicles on certain maps. Though i did end up forgetting about the game and just ended up playing cod on my ps3 (another important game for me), i never forgotten about battlefield 2 and still play it on occasion. Sadly moving from Lebanon to Australia, playing bf2 with 300+ ping is abit too much for me to handle so i been pulling myself slowly and slowly away from the game. It sucks to say too since i wish there was aussie / asian servers playing consistently. Battlefield 2 was basically the gateway to my current passion for programming and gaming. I dont think DICE will ever make something like battlefield 2 but im just thankful for the privilege to play it for as long as i did. Right now im chilling with battlefield 4 but i do miss amazing features we had with battlefield 2.
And i just wanna say thank you to your channel aswell. I never knew battlefield 2 had competitive play at all and its so exciting to see the history the game as a whole. I been binge watching your battlefield 2 videos and im so grateful for your content as i can get a glimpse of parts of the game i missed out ❤️❤️❤️❤️

The technical issue which breaks spectator is that all hit registration is done on the server that means on your screen it might look like hits but the server just says no and vise versa. Other games have shooter side hit registration for years it is simpler faster and allows people to never get bad hitreg and the spectator to see the actual pov of the player. The tragic excuse of "the tech is not there" is just hilarious dice has tools to edit the map and everything they just need to give us access like a dev mode or something and then be able to save the map file.

Saying that BF4 was a "resurgence" of competitive play is laughable. BF4 was a massive step down from BF3. It had a fraction of the teams and players that BF3 did. The only thing it had going for it was developer sponsored leagues.
The fact that teams and player bailed out of the game in droves despite this unprecedented money and the opportunities to travel overseas and compete at LAN, show how tragic the BF4 scene was.
The only scene that actually seemed to flourish is SA/Brazil. OCE, NA, EU, Asia had far fewer players and teams than BF3 (a quarter the number at best).
It was a downgrade in the metrics that actually matter.
