It's ironic, Rhaenyra accidently picked the MVP for the enemy team. 🤣🤣
Aemond is def the Green MVP tho.
@@Yoshi-qp1mgidk about that. It’s between Criston and Daeron for green mvp imo
And boy, did Rhaenyra end up regretting this choice.
Indeed!
That's why you trust experience, not a ideal. Ideal can be too shiny to overlook other issues.
Well, she was wrong for getting him into her bed and she didn't know how he would act afterward. Still, the point remains, no one in her position should be sleeping with someone in his position.
She was right on the main point that someone with actual combat experience should protect the King. Her mistake was sleeping with him later on when she was drunk, horny and frustrated. Though, he was capable of telling her no or convincing her it was a mistake. Plus, she can learn from her mistakes, including this one.
@@BenMedia7 Her main mistake was not listening to the wisdom of Otto. He was explaining very important things about war and support from key houses, and later in either this episode or another, you can hear the small council arguing about the backlash that this choice caused in regards to the stepstone war. It happens in background chatter so it's easy to miss, but you can clearly hear them mention one of the same houses Otto mentioned here.
This scene is actually a perfect summary of Rhaenyra's strengths as a leader.....and weaknesses. Rhaenyra has a great tactical and logical mind and often makes the right decision when ruling (no doubt she learned much from her father from a young age) but she lacks the patience and discipline for court proceedings. Part of ruling is sitting in boring meetings, making small talk and humoring people despite already knowing what you're going to do. Yes Cole was the best and right choice but she should have gone through the song and dance anyway to protect the other lords and nobles' pride. The process is just as important as the right answer.
This brashness and inability to care about other people's egos will constantly bite her in the behind later. It's one of the reasons why she starts the war with fewer people on her side and how she creates so many enemies with personal grudges against her.
This is actually really good insight without resorting to calling her a spoiled brat which I see so many sexist people doing. It is true that she learns patience over time but she is also a teenager, forced to do a lot against her will and participate in niceties that she doesn't care about. She sees the hypocracies of the court and doesn't care to play into them. Hence the impatience and the unwillingness to stroke the egos of the great houses.
Really great comment, should be more likes.
That's when Otto realised he can't control her, thus she is not suited for an heir
He saw here she was smart, He realized in Dragonstone when she faced Daemon and recovered his baby brother's egg that she will be a real problem.
She was only to be a temporary solution to the problem of Daemon as heir to the throne. He put her forward to buy time for one of his blood to take the throne
I'm sorry this is completely off topic but I ave to ask, why is your profile pic Google Earth? Nothing wrong with it, just curious.

Out of Jaehaerys's first seven Kingsguard, considered the finest set of Kingsguard of all time, only three were highborn
who would win, Jaehaerys's Kingsguard vs The Mad King's Kingsguard?
The video casts Rhaenyra in the best light but consider what Otto is trying to tell her. These men come from rich and powerful houses, they are proud and quick to anger. Otto tries to get Rhaenyra to treat them respectfully and she only goes dismisses them without a fair hearing so she can appoint the prettiest... sorry, most experienced. 12 knights and she insults 11 of them. Otto was right to caution her. How many of their houses will join the Greens later on?
Half of them are future Green house, half are future Black houses. So it's a wash.
Rhaenyra is correct on these grounds. The Kingsguard are supposed to be great fighters who protect the king, not political appointees. Doing the latter is what reduces the Kingsguard to what it is in "GOT"; largely a bunch of mediocrities and thugs save for the likes of Barristan and Jamie. Jamie in the books openly bemoans what the Kingsguard is compared to what it was when he first joined.
@@mst3KGf im not saying she made a.bad choice, but she did it the wrong way. She should have got off that balcony, walked among them, heard their tales. Make them feel they were given a fair chance. She acted like a spoilt teenager, not a future queen and Otto saw it.
Later in one of the episodes you can hear the members of the small council arguing about the stepstones war and at least one of the houses that is not supporting them due to the choice Rhaenyra made here(while Viserys is visibly stressed out). People can say what they want about Otto, but he understood politics and was trying to teach Rhaenyra something important here. Her logic in choosing ser Criston was sound, but she just lacked the true wisdom of why it would be a bad choice.
@@mattwho81 good point, she should have heard the other knights out as not to slight them & their houses. you saying she should get down from the balcony is wrong though that's just dumb
Otto is the 2nd most powerful person in Westeros if he is so concerned about political unions then he should've picked.
In fact it was at his insistence from the precious clip at the council meeting that the choice fell upon Rhaenyra.
Besides why would Otto even try to strengthen Rhaenyra's hand when he had been plotting against her?!
Rhaenyra failed to learn a lesson here, this was a rich lesson similar to what Tywin imparts on Tommen when dealing with houses. This one in particular is about securing favor.
Having a member of a noble house in the Kingsguard doesn't ensure that house's loyalty. And at least some of these houses ended up supporting Rhaenyra and the Blacks later on.
@@BenMedia7 It actually does, unless something unforseen (like a slight/betrayal) happens. It's works similar to a marriage.
Her choice of Ser Criston had nothing to do with which of these houses supported the blacks. That was about the oathes they had taken, and which houses belived in the laws of succession vs the word of the king.
@@in_vas_por8810 Otto was trying to stack the kings guard with his political Allie’s xD. Besides, what use is currying favor with the houses if you get assassinated because your kings guard are all political appointees. This type of stupidity is how the pretorian guard of Rome became a problem, instead of becoming elite soldiers they just became a set of elitist bodyguards who were not only useless in combat but became a liability because they were all from elite families and used that position to threaten the emperor. There is a use for appointing bodyguards as a way to curry favor but stacking your whole guard that way not only breeds incompetence it also weakens your political position because you appointees are more likely to be ambitious than loyal
King guard have to take oath to forsake their houses
@@ravenblood1954 While the choice of Cole would be regretable one for her. However, her logic does stand. As a Royal guard you need men that have proven to be competent fighters. Not Tourny men. You get favor from the houses by other means. Marrying off your children to high nobles for example. How many of his grandsons/granddaughters had betrothals? Not many. That is what he should be doing. Marrying them off into the Tyrells, Martels, Tully's, Stark, Lannisters, Barathons etc. You don't allow them into your kingsgaurd unless they shown they are truly badass in combat however.
Seemed like such a cool moment at the time but now it's like watching a car crash
Mily Alcock nailed this role
too bad the older version was not a good fit
@@dragerdetNah, you're Wrong.
Otto warning Rhaenyra not to pick Criston 😅
Rhaenyra : will they ever accept me as their queen?
Criston : they will have no choice but to princess.
Laughs in Let the Seven Bear Witness Aegon Targaryen is the true heir to the iron throne.
And Otto didn’t even see that Cole would be one of his most trusted allies in the future. Nice.
Cole is loyal to Alicent not Otto.
He tried to warn her 😂😂😂
Rhaenys watching her from the balcony
Watching Rhanera choose the man who comes up with the battle plan that kills Rhaenys and her dragon, ironic
This actually hurt her for the allies she would need later.
Rhaenyra is right on the main point that the King should be protected by someone with actual combat experience. Plus, at least some of these houses did support Rhaenyra later.
She would never know Criston would become a fucking moron, and she would never have Otto Hightower alliance
@@lukitasmol10 I was talking about the suiter’s
@@BenMedia7 actually she is wrong. Very few Kings die in combat. They are much more likely to be assassinated or deposed by a rival, hence why you place the sons of major houses regardless of their combat experience. You want someone who is loyal and whose membership in the Kingsguard will bring you political allies.
@@youraverageimperialguard7932 Appointing someone to the Kingsguard doesn't guarantee that they'll be your ally. And if you make decisions about who guards the king based on politicking rather than loyalty or skill, you end up with a corrupt and less effective Kingsguard. And she is still right, the King should be defended by people who have actual battle experience, or at the very least be very skilled in combat.
Ironically Otto Hightower was right as usual
Wrong. A kingsguard was supposed to be the best knights with actual combat experience and skill but never meant to be used as a political tool or a secret highborn club. That's exactly what happened to the kingsguard by Robert's time, the worst kingsguard who were only there by nepotism and some weren't even qualified to be a poison taster.
@@ythandlename I would say, Barristan Selmy and Jaime Lannister were decent inclusions i Robert's kingsguard. Both were among the best fighters alive.
"Those men are tourney Knights"
*proceeds to have 3 bastard children with another tourney Knight*
The three stages of reactions to this moment:
Stage 1:
Rhaenerya made the right choice here.
Otto wasn’t happy with that.
Stage 2:
Rhaenerya made the wrong choice there.
Otto ended up being really happy with this decision.
Stage 3:
Rhaenerya just recruited the MVP for the enemy team.
Otto just met the guy who would steal his job.
Otto was the one who pushed to name her heir and warned her from appointing Criston. Otto was just looking out for her but the spoiled brat didn't wanna listen.
Otto only wanted her named as heir to get rid of Daemon. His plan afterwards was to have her be a placeholder until Alicent could marry the king and have children. He's not motivated by any desire to look out for her. And Rhaenyra's right: The Kingsguard should be someone with actual combat experience.
@@BenMedia7 lol i was being facetious. ofc he didn't have her best interest at her and the feeling was mutual. as for kingsguard, well that depends. sometimes alliances can take precedence over skill.
You're delusional if you really think he ever wanted her to actually inherit the throne.
All that him pushing her as successor served was to divide Viserys and Daemon, because he planned for a long time to increase his own influence within the Red Keep.
@@NtoTheM Thank You!!!!!!
@@NtoTheM I was very obviously being facetious
Like how she gave williingly a précious ally to the Hightower mob
Being the last standing out of 320 knights in a melee is no mean feat tho, especially if the Melee went like the tourney at the red keep lmao but he could've also just lucked out so 🤷♂️ I'd pick the real combat veteran too
I think he said three and twenty, meaning twenty three, it’s a weird way of saying it but I suppose this is another planet after all.
@@lordwind9745 that makes sense, Ive heard them say numbers like that in other high medieval fantasy stuff but I've read of other melees in GoT where there were 200 I believe, they're about to have one in the winds of winter for robyn arryns order of falcon knights, if the book ever comes out that is lol
Putting a soldier that survived combat vs "tourney knights" is a bit like a army grunt vs a pro fighter.. sure they might not hesitate to kill upon command.. but doesn't mean they are a good swordsman.
She is right, but the way she's rude to everyone wouldn't win her any support
Well that backfired
The thing is, if she hadn’t slept with Cole he would have remained loyal. But because of his ego it made an enemy of him.
this is why you should fear the house of the dragon (the house of aegon) because you can't control a dragon.
One thing about this scene: Lord Commander Westerling would absolutely agree with Rhaenyra here about combat expirience being more important than tourney expirience. If he were to recommend a knight, he’d give good reason why
Great lesson for young adults entering maturity. Don’t go for the boy band looking blokes. The Malister knight and the fat guy in orange were excellent candidates but didn’t have that BTS appeal that young Rhynaera was looking for.
Otto was right about Criston Cole...
A small W for Rhaenyra that ended up turning into a MASSIVE L.
Anyone know what the outro song is?
At least sir Criston was an experienced fighter
He's playing politics, she's playing meritocracy. There's a parallel that applies to today.
And the man Rhaneyra ends up choosing ends up as Hand of the King and the leader of the army that opposes her
Cole's tale is pretty interesting how he rose to be a knight, tried to stay being one, then embraced his inner corruption and became a dishonorable knight who pretends to be a one. Then deep down in the Dance, he likely had a change of heart and wanted to save his men from a massacre by a duel only to be denied because of all the bs he put the realm through and becoming a real hero only when he knew he was going to die anyways. What a hypocrite, can't wait for Butchers Ball.
Can you make more obvious information square ?
This scene is very cryptic, I couldn't get it all.
Also, make it larger please. It only takes 15% of the screen. It should be half. I clicked to this video to read obvious information squares, not to watch the scene.
Finally, put more animation and colors, so it becomes impossible to ignore it, I want to make sure I get it all.
Otto Hightower once again failing his way upwards, accidentally advancing his own cause despite himself. If he had his way, one of the Greens' key supporters would have been an irrelevant hedge knight forever.
first big mistake of raenyra
She lost a war with 10+ Dragons against a faction with three dragons, while having the loyalty of the North, Vale and the Riverlands. She got all the Dragons in Kings Landing killed, lost the city to peasants, her child was killed by her own dragon and she was captured and killed in her own home. The first mistake she made, but small compared to everything that came after.
@@redwarrior9100 which child was by her own dragon?
@@redwarrior9100 she and daemon made a lot of mistake
@@Unknown-ux1uo joffrey, the 3rd son by harwin
Otto is always there to try to manipulate the situation. He sounds like he is making sense but he isn't. She made the correct choice and as Tywin put it "The lion does not concern itsself with the opinion of the sheep". This scene is also right after she makes a GREAT point in the small council, and Otto has her removed from it because she is intelligently pursuing good policy. He does the same here.
Daemon ends up messing with her and and the relationship with Cole - but it's also the stupid patriarchy crap they have to deal with. She is of the dragon and shouldn't have to deal with that BS.
Exactly. Too many people miss the point.
The Targaryens are untouchable at this point in time. It literally does not matter if they offended the Lannisters, Baratheons, Starks and the Vale at the same time. As long as they have dragons, they can do as they please.
Otto is nothing more than a generic wannabe Tywin. And he's nowhere near Tywin's level.
Merit before birth. That is why Jaehaerys' Kingsguard was awesome, and Joffrey's were drunkards and child abusers.
Not to mention Cersei was dismissing members of her kingsguard like Ser Borros Blount after his attempt to bring prince Tommen to Rosby for protection from thr upcoming battle of blackwater failed. Cersei had him dismissed despite the Kingsguard serving for life. And i believe he appointed Ser Osmund Kettleblack. Little more than a gutter knight if i recall as his replacement.
