Speedlight versus Strobe. Showing my photoshoot setup, studio, settings and photos

  • In this video I'm talking about the differences between using speedlights or strobes in the studio. I'm also showing you my photoshoot setups for a cake smash shoot and a sitter session, settings, photo studio and photos. You also see some behind the scenes shots and I'm sharing what I use for studio lights. What do you use? Natural light, strobes, speedlights or something else?
I'm a full-time photographer in the Netherlands and I'm planning on showing you a but more of my life as a photographer. Are you interested in photography? Are you looking for a free-online Photography course? Do you want to see the inside of a Photo Studio? Then please, watch my videos and subscribe to my channel!
I'm planning on sharing videos in which I show you my typical work-week as a photographer. I will give you tips & tricks concerning photography, photo shoots, backdrops, studio props, camera settings (iso, aperture, shutter speed, white balance), photoshoot outfits, photoshoot make-up etc.
Ik zal videos maken over camera instellingen (iso, sluitertijd, diafragma, wit-balans), studio achtergronden, fotoshoot outfits, fotoshoot make-up enz.
    IMPORTANT
If you are interested in photographing newborn babies yourself I would highly recommend you to first learn about photography in general. Master you camera, photograph in the Manual mode, learn about aperture, iso, shutter speed, white balance, light and composition. Take photos of your friends (adults or very patient older kids) and make sure you don't have to think about your camera anymore when photographing babies. Learn about editing as well. Please, don't experiment photographing Newborn babies without training. Attend a workshop by an experienced and professional photographer with an expertise in Newborn Photography. Learn about the anatomy of babies and invest in good quality cameras, lenses and props. Babies are extremely vulnerable and small and their safety and comfort should be your highest priority. Start with simple poses and make sure you know and understand that many 'pinterest poses' are composites. Please, don't try this at home. If you want beautiful photos of your own Newborn Baby, I highly recommend you to hire a professional and experienced photographer who is trained and specialised in Newborn Photography.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey! Even though I am a pet photographer, I am learning so much from your videos and finding so much inspiration from you!! I love your style and appreciate all of your tips !!! My clients have been asking for doggy cake smash sessions so this is perfect! I started with Yongnuo speedlights and now I have 3 Godox speedlights which I love! I also bounce flash off the ceiling for fill light plus I have 2 Octoboxes. I agree with you, no cords, no mess!

Great video! Thank you! A few years ago I went from natural light to strobe and I love it... I've used a speedlight on camera for weddings ect. But I have to say you've sold me on Speedlights. All your pros made so much sense..... Instead of replacing my strobe (when the day comes) I might just move to speedlights. Food for thought, for sure!

Fenna, you are my very favourite you tuber and you have taught me SO much through all of your brilliant videos which are so easy to watch, I never lose interest, I could watch them over and over for hours! And I do :) This video especially has helped me immensely as my studio is my 6x6 garage and I have 0 natural light and was using continuous with my octogon softbox with one speed flash only - shadows followed me everywhere I went :(
After trying your theory and watching this particular video especially learning to change the strength of my flash as it was set on 1-1 and putting the second speed flash into my softbox and removing the harsh globes I had in there my problem is solved and I now have the lighting ive been trying to achieve for years!!! So thank you and I’m sending you the biggest virtual hug for sharing your knowledge with us all with your amazing tutorials! I look forward to your next video❤️
    Thank you!!!

Thank you. This was really helpful. My first grandchild is due in Jan 2019 and I would love to be able to take some good pics of her! I have never taken indoor photos seriously so researching and learning is great. I took your advice and practiced on my dogs over the weekend, much to their disgust....and delight because of all the treats! However I now understand the saying about never working with animals! Not being a professional I cant justify spending a load so your video has helped me understand what might be useful for me. Lucky the natural light is very bright in Australia!

Thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏼 you answered every question I had about whether to get strobes or speed lights. And thank you for clarifying how some lighting setups I see allow for constant and flash from the same soft box (modeling light). I was always curious how they achieved that. I love how you use a speed light to bounce off the ceiling and trigger your main speed light. I have been using a constant light in a softbox and a separate speed light in a really large softbox but really like the effect you get using the pair of lights. 😁

Hi from Argentina. I see a lot of your videos and I love it. I highly recommend you to upgrade to Godox system...I started a few months ago and I just love it all, i have 2 V860II, and 2 godox AD200 (a little bigger then a regular flash but a lot more power and has an interchangable head with modelling bulb!) with a Xpro1 trigger...they all communicate perfectly, without any cable! You wont regret it. Here ther are to expensive to buy it (like +50% at least of the price for BH). Regards and keep it coming!

Like do you allow them to preview their photos after each shoot and then they decide what they want or do you just burn them a CD of all of their photos? I can't decide the best way to get people their photos! Thank you for making these videos, your amazing and I love your personality. 💗

Thank you for explaining everything so well in detail! :-) I was wondering if you could share some links to your softbox, the stand it is on and the little crocheted blankets you use. I have a softbox almost identical to yours but the stand and setup that it is connected to is super heavy and very hard for me to move around. I I would also like one that is a little lower to the ground like the one you have. My stand does not go down that low. Thanks so much!!!

I love watching and learning from you! I’m also a Nikon user and want to start using my speed lights more. I have the same soft box you have. You said you use master and remote may be you could do a video on how to set camera body and the speed lights. ( I should ask if you have to do any setting to the camera body?) what is the spread of light coming from the speed lights? I’m thinking wide but wanted to double check. Is there any helpful tricks on feathering and the distance of the light from your soft box to beanbag or floor poses. Thank you!

I use the YN600EX-RT 2 flashes and the YN-E3-RT 2 transmitter. you can add up to 4 lights without anything else needed. They are capable of HSS and any other settings you need, cheap and dependable. If you consider them keep in mind that's the models for the Canon series.

Thank you so much for all the videos! You explain everything so well in such a friendly manner. I am curious - Wouldn't a stronger/higher power on your flash/speedlite allow a lower ISO on your camera? Wouldn't a lower ISO be more desirable?

    • @fixitrod4969
      @fixitrod4969 5 лет назад +1

I wondered that too but I think she relies on a lot of natural light (I've noticed in other videos too) as part of her style and a hotter flash might add a "harshness". But, I'm replying mostly so I can get notified if she replies. I'm curious as well. These cameras now days have such good iso as well it's probably no issue. I heard her mention between 500 and 640. I use noise cancellation on most photos over 400 iso personally.

Hi Fenna, thanks for your video. I use continuous lighting as I have a home studio and my spare room is not very big, I think it works well for my set-up for now, I only bought it a month ago. It's really interesting to know why and how you use the speed lights. It would be great if you did a tutorial on the poses you use for the babies, how you use them and if you have a workflow. Also, how do yo manage to fit your sessions into 2 hours. I am doing 4 hour sessions most of the time 😅

I think continuous light is also great, because it's like the modelling light where you already see how your shadows fall. I think I will record a video on poses soon and the different workflows per session. I never really look at the clock during a newborn session, but somehow I always finish after 1,5-2 hours.

hi. Im just starting a newborn photography. You videos are very good and useful. Im doing mobile photography and using just day light. Every one told me that speed light will be to hash on the baby even with soft box. Yours photos are very good and you have speed light. Do you use TTlL or manual with newborn. The day light is not always there. Did you ever used elinchrome portrait kit. Not sure which to start with mobile photographer. Thank you. Im in England

In regards to wondering if your batteries are running low on your speedlites is to use the godox S-2 Type mount bracket as your speedlight is mounted outside the softbox - have godox receiver attached to flash attached to lightstand with transmitter on camera hotshoe. godox softbox nikon camera bodies.

Do you need to buy the stand or anything else with your Wescott 50" softbox?

What is the cold shoe mount you use for your speedlights? They look like they have a quick release - different some the ones I've used.

    Hi Fenna
Can I please ask - you said you use the natural light as well as the flash for the images. Lots of studio work I’ve seen sets the camera to completely remove any ambient light from the room so only it’s only the flash light that falls on the subject - what are your thoughts ? Many thanks Mike Uk

I have a ton to learn before I even get started lol. But I do have a space to use as a potential studio in the future. Only bad thing is there are no windows at all. Would speedlights work for a place with no natural lighting or would the strobe lights be a better option?

Seem like an advantage of strobe is the lower ISO. Using my iso above 640 makes me nervous
