One Light Portrait Lighting for AWESOME Portraits & Headshots
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 1 авг 2024
- I want to show you how you can create some awesome light for portrait photography and headshots using just ONE Flash! Great portrait lighting is not the result of owning lots of lights. Great studio lighting comes from learning to see light.
In this photography lighting tutorial, I am going to walk you through different portrait lighting set-ups that you can do with just one light. The light can be a studio monolight or a simple speedlight, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ll also show you how to use simple reflectors and light modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes to enhance the quality of the light that you create for your portraits.
This is the first in a series of studio lighting tutorials that I will post using 1, 2, 3 and 4 lights.

Another great video. Looking forward to the series. You have to learn one light before you use multiple lights. Judicious use of reflectors is easier than trying to control spill/etc from multiple lights.
Thanks Steven Muncy - I could not agree more!
I've been watching your videos all day at work today. LOL

Thanks William Parmley and THANKS for subscribing - great to have you along for the ride!
Hi Joe! I've been recently doing headshots and love this set up. Been staying safe using continuous lighting, both at 45 deg angle (vertical clamshell), another above and forward of subject, and a reflector on the bottom of the subject. It's a page out of Hurley idea and have got good results. I just received my Neewer studio strobes and will give this setup a go. Thanks for your video tutorials!
Thank you for the kind words skyknightmm ! I am glad that you are finding them useful!!

You're welcome Joe! Seasons Greetings!
Hey Joe....I just came across one of your tutorials accidentally (aren't those always the best finds?), and am so happy I did. I've watched several in a row, and if my eyes weren't going all fuzzy from too much laptop eye strain, I'd still be watching! There is SO much to learn!! LOL I've subscribed and look forward to learning more and more and more. I've only had my speed light a few weeks now - have been scared to death of trying to figure out flash - ha! Also really keen to figure out the whole 'lighting thing' and actually learning to 'see' light. I will definitely be coming back to your channel for more! Thanks so much!
Awesome Sharron Timmins! I have lots of lighting videos . Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any new ones!
I am aspiring to become a great portrait photographer with minimum budget. Thank you for your wisdom!
ur the best, thank you!
I appreciate your kind words and comments Happy to be American!
Just found your channel, your amazing Joe... Definitely subscribed, I follow alot of teachers/content creators here, it's really hard to find someone with a level of explanation and an oratory so good as yours, you make things so easy to learn, congratulations! I am a videographer getting into photography right now... I'm in a very tight budget, want to setup an ONE light studio with some reflectors and I'm in doubt in getting a spot led light with a beam angle of 55º, diffuse with a modifier like an umbrella (cheaper) or get an already soft led light with a beam angle of 110º. What would you recommend? Thanks!
Very Nice. You are a very good speaker Joe Edelman, thank you very much!!
Thank you for the very kind words Lienio Medeiros and THANKS for subscribing - great to have you along for the ride!
Excelente explicación, muy detallada y lo mejor es que tiene subtitulo en español, para los que no dominamos el inglés. Gracias.
De nada Studio Subterraneo! Gracias por comentar.
Such good advice again Joe. Just watch out for photography lighting manufacturers bumping you off for showing everyone how to do it cheaply and with one light! 😀
LOL - there have already been threats garfield4108! 😎 I really appreciate the kind words!
Love it!!!
Amazing! Thank you so much!🤗
Thank you

Thank you myozbubble ! And YES to all of the above. Stay tuned - I have a ton of lighting stuff in the works!
nice sir
Very nice explanation Sir... 👌👌👌
Thanks Maruthi Kothakota and THANKS for subscribing - great to have you along for the ride!
GURU
good tutorial as usual Joe - love the beauty dish result, s the black backdrop just regular seamless?
Indeed Jaime Loyola - It is a regular Savage black paper seamless. It helps that it is a little dirty! :-)
Thanks for posting. I just discovered your site and SM accounts through PetaPixel. Fantastic!
Awesome Benjamin Taylor ! Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos!
What light setup is done for those shots where a models face or part of the face is seen through a hole in sheet of paper. Is it just photoshop or can be done in studio?
Hey Joe, Do you have a video on basics for makeup that the photographer should know? So many videos to review...
I do Samuel James! ruclips.net/video/0_jBCvMJh9k/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/O9Wa504512E/видео.html
ultimate squad
Thanks for commenting G Robinson-White!
Thanks Joe, very nice and informative video again ! i bought few weeks ago some (2) light stick (cheaper version of the Ice light)
i've been experimenting with it for portrait ! i was wondering how would you work with it as the only portative light for portrait.. i am planing to bring it with me as my only light while traveling.
Thanks again and can't wait for your next video.
Thank you for the kind words Mathieu Couture ! Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos! There are several inexpensive versions of the ice lights available now which is a good thing!. As for portraits... I have shot portraits with a single light bulb, so can you make it work? SURE! Will it be a lot tougher than working with a flash and a modifier? SURE! :-) The process of taking a photograph is one of solving a problem. We decide we want to shoot something - hence we create our own problem - How to get a great shot? So the key is to be creative. Try to look for natural reflectors to help you create some fill to go along with the ice light or simply try to expose most of your shot with the ambient light that is available and use the ice light as a main or key light to enhance the light on your subjects face. Happy travels!
Tanks to you Joe ! of course i subscribed many weeks ago ! i got the Travor MTL-900 II... I like it but i am really curious to know i you would work with it ?
Have a great day...
Awesome Mathieu Couture ! Glad to have you as a subscriber! I think that light would be a ton of fun. As I mentioned, it is not a very broad light source, bt you could do some real cool stuff with that if you combine it with the ambient light in a scene.
Hello Joe, absolutely awesome. If the ceiling is high and not exactly white will a white shoot through umbrella work?
Thanks Me Harper. And yes you can- ceiling height is not really having an impact on these shots.
Hi Joe - I am a complete novice with Flash photography. I see that many photographers use expensive handheld light meters. Do I really need one? Do you use one? Can we do without one? Many thanks - I love your videos!
Thank you for the kind words Jeremy Ley! Can you do without it - YES. Can you do better and more consistent with it - YES DEFINITELY! Do I use one - most of the time - yes.
With one light, separation can still be applied with only one light on a black background with a piece of aluminum foil. Just make sure it doesn't come back into your lens.
Hi Joe, Great video!! I am looking to do headshots soon!! I shoot Sony a7iii I have an 85mm 1.8 and I am looking for either modifiers or reflectors to use... What do you suggest? I was looking at Luna Grip kit as a start with a stand and another reflector. Just looking for some advice, so I can have a good shoot. Thanks Ryan
I use a Phottix external Flash with this and that is all I have so far....
Excellent video! Why don’t you do a video about portrait retouching! This is where I struggle the most.
Thank you for the kind words, Robert Roby. I don't so a lot of retouching videos because there are many excellent Photoshop teachers on RUclips. I recommend PixImPerfect, Phlern, Scott Kelby, and Photoshop Cafe.
Great video, question, where can I find the reflector that you used under the model's face?
Thank you for the kind words Myberson Saint Pierre ! Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos! I added links to the info section below the video.
Great videos! Do you have any videos on pregnancy/maternity photography? Have not had the time to se every one you made, yet.
Thank you for the kind words John O. Pedersen ! I don't yet, I'm sorry - but stay tuned! Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos!
I currently have 2 flashes and I try not to invest in a Monolight. Can you explain more if this could be done with flash units and their settings?
Every thing that you see in this video can be done with speedlights Kevin Duong Nguyen! Stay tuned - I will be doing some speedlight videos real soon.
very informative tutorial ... did you use any remote trigger for these Flashpoint strobes?
I do MT Nguyen. Pocket Wizards.
can you change the Flashpoint strobe power with this Pocket Wizards or just to trigger the light only? Thanks again Joe.
