  • I want to show you how you can create some awesome light for portrait photography and headshots using just ONE Flash! Great portrait lighting is not the result of owning lots of lights. Great studio lighting comes from learning to see light.
    In this photography lighting tutorial, I am going to walk you through different portrait lighting set-ups that you can do with just one light. The light can be a studio monolight or a simple speedlight, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’ll also show you how to use simple reflectors and light modifiers like softboxes and beauty dishes to enhance the quality of the light that you create for your portraits.
    This is the first in a series of studio lighting tutorials that I will post using 1, 2, 3 and 4 lights.

    Hi Joe! I've been recently doing headshots and love this set up. Been staying safe using continuous lighting, both at 45 deg angle (vertical clamshell), another above and forward of subject, and a reflector on the bottom of the subject. It's a page out of Hurley idea and have got good results. I just received my Neewer studio strobes and will give this setup a go. Thanks for your video tutorials!

I've watched several in a row, and if my eyes weren't going all fuzzy from too much laptop eye strain, I'd still be watching! There is SO much to learn!! LOL I've subscribed and look forward to learning more and more and more. I've only had my speed light a few weeks now - have been scared to death of trying to figure out flash - ha! Just found your channel, your amazing Joe... Definitely subscribed, I follow alot of teachers/content creators here, it's really hard to find someone with a level of explanation and an oratory so good as yours, you make things so easy to learn, congratulations! I am a videographer getting into photography right now... I'm in a very tight budget, want to setup an ONE light studio with some reflectors and I'm in doubt in getting a spot led light with a beam angle of 55º, diffuse with a modifier like an umbrella (cheaper) or get an already soft led light with a beam angle of 110º. What would you recommend? Thanks!

    Can you discuss the differences between strobe lights, soft lights, off camera lights? Also, how do you sync up off-camera lights with your camera?

      Indeed Jaime Loyola - It is a regular Savage black paper seamless. It helps that it is a little dirty! :-)

    What light setup is done for those shots where a models face or part of the face is seen through a hole in sheet of paper. Is it just photoshop or can be done in studio?

    Thanks Joe, very nice and informative video again ! i bought few weeks ago some (2) light stick (cheaper version of the Ice light)
    i've been experimenting with it for portrait ! i was wondering how would you work with it as the only portative light for portrait.. i am planing to bring it with me as my only light while traveling.
    Thanks again and can't wait for your next video.

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 лет назад

      Thank you for the kind words Mathieu Couture ! Be sure to subscribe so that you don't miss any videos! There are several inexpensive versions of the ice lights available now which is a good thing!. As for portraits... I have shot portraits with a single light bulb, so can you make it work? SURE! Will it be a lot tougher than working with a flash and a modifier? SURE! :-) The process of taking a photograph is one of solving a problem. We decide we want to shoot something - hence we create our own problem - How to get a great shot? So the key is to be creative. Try to look for natural reflectors to help you create some fill to go along with the ice light or simply try to expose most of your shot with the ambient light that is available and use the ice light as a main or key light to enhance the light on your subjects face. Happy travels!

      Tanks to you Joe ! of course i subscribed many weeks ago ! i got the Travor MTL-900 II... I like it but i am really curious to know i you would work with it ?
      Have a great day...

      @theJoeEdelman  8 лет назад

      Awesome Mathieu Couture ! Glad to have you as a subscriber! I think that light would be a ton of fun. As I mentioned, it is not a very broad light source, bt you could do some real cool stuff with that if you combine it with the ambient light in a scene.

    Hello Joe, absolutely awesome. If the ceiling is high and not exactly white will a white shoot through umbrella work?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  5 лет назад

      Thanks Me Harper. And yes you can- ceiling height is not really having an impact on these shots.

    Hi Joe - I am a complete novice with Flash photography. I see that many photographers use expensive handheld light meters. Do I really need one? Do you use one? Can we do without one? Many thanks - I love your videos!

      @theJoeEdelman  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you for the kind words Jeremy Ley! Can you do without it - YES. Can you do better and more consistent with it - YES DEFINITELY! Do I use one - most of the time - yes.

    With one light, separation can still be applied with only one light on a black background with a piece of aluminum foil. Just make sure it doesn't come back into your lens.

    Hi Joe, Great video!! I am looking to do headshots soon!! I shoot Sony a7iii I have an 85mm 1.8 and I am looking for either modifiers or reflectors to use... What do you suggest? I was looking at Luna Grip kit as a start with a stand and another reflector. Just looking for some advice, so I can have a good shoot. Thanks Ryan
