Did We Just Put The Best Audio System Ever In The $400 Geo Tracker?

  • Could the components have been better? Sure, but I think this may be the nicest system ever installed in a Geo Tracker. We stripped the car all the way down to the interior sheet metal, removed the factory sound deadening, then installed B-Quiet Ultimate on every inch of the body we could get into. Working with Alpine's new ILX-W650 and the 4ch Power Pack amplifier that mounts to the back of it was great was well. Everything is compact and wired to the nines!

I bought a new 1987 Suzuki Samurai in the summer of 1987, shortly after I graduated from high school. With a lot of hard work and saving I was able to win my class in a car stereo competition a year later. It was eventually stolen and stripped but to this day it is my favorite of cars I've owned.
In those days there wasn't much power equipment made for car stereos, beyond speaker wire, so I got 4 gauge cable and connectors for power and ground from a welding supply store. And nobody did auxiliary capacitors but a neighbor, who worked for the Mallory battery company, suggested that I try some massive "caps" that somehow made it out the back door of his workplace, which I mounted under the hood.
The components list may not be impressive by today's standards but it was all top of the 1987 line and sounded great...
    - Kenwood KDC-80 pull-out CD player (the KDC-90 had an external FM receiver, which I didn't care to have)
    - Kenwood (model #?) 1/4 DIN electronic crossover mounted in place of the ashtray (a perfect fit!)
    - Rockford Fosgate PA-1 preamp
    - Rockford Fosgate Punch 75 amp
    - Boston Acoustics mids (the Samurai has factory front kick panel speaker mounts, and the panel is sealed, providing punchy mid-bass)
    - Boston Acoustics soft dome tweeters (which came with optional wedge-shaped surface mounts for sound staging)
    - Rockford Fosgate Power 300
    - Rockford Fosgate Pro 15" woofers (2) (148 ounce magnets and 3 inch vented voice coils)
For the woofers I built a ported, particle-board box in such a shape as to double as a back seat (it was bolted to the body and sat two people but had no seat belts). Although the box appeared to be small I tuned it by volume & port diameter according to the chart that came with the RF woofers. The two amps were mounted to the back of the box and were accessed by opening the tailgate. I padded and carpeted the box, protected the woofers with heavy-duty grills from JBL concert speakers (so that folks could lean against them), and put a few throw pillows like a little couch. The girls loved it!
Sitting in the front seat the SPL meter recorded 134db, with the top off. Then I took it to a show. Although at 375 watts (the RF amps were under rated) I was at the low end of the 300 - 499 watt class, and had a soft top, but the sound quality and installation took the prize.
I said the car was stolen but I did have a nice Alpine alarm system, which came with a "glass breakage sensor" microphone which happened to also work for the sound of the soft top zippers. I even had an adjustable motion sensor in the center console, for when the top was off, and pressure-sensitive trigger pads in the driver's seat. But I failed to run the alarm from a separate, hidden battery. When I found the Samurai dumped on the side of a country road I found that the thieves had simply clipped the battery cable from under the engine compartment.

I think that's the whole point of having the removable sub. The rest of the system, because it's properly installed, most thieves won't bother with because it would take too long to remove it and would vastly increase their chances of getting caught. I like how Alpine comes up with a neat "Powerpack" that snaps on the the back of the head unit but you still have a rats nest of wires between the two parts. You'd figure they would set up the amp with a pass-through for everything and an adapter that goes between them so you only have to mess with the external wiring and you'll have a little less mess in the dash.

    • @WatchJRGo
      @WatchJRGo  5 лет назад +1

I like his stuff but find myself fast forwarding through a lot of the video and I usually never watch more than one or two. He needs to liven it up somehow if he wants to blow up but if he doesn’t and stays the same I’ll watch him still.

No joke, those battery terminal connectors made out of felt will stop 100% of the acid coming up around the posts of the battery and corroding on the terminal cables. They're like 3 bucks, I put them on all my vehicles and have never had to deal with it again. If you're super paranoid they have one with a read oil like spray you can spray on the terminals before putting on the connector, that'll prevent any acid from wicking up between the terminal connector and post if it sneaks past the felt ring (which like I said is all I ever use, never had it be a problem).

Da**it now you are costing me money!!,!! Hahaha. I think it is great how Amber steps right in and helps right along with you two! That is a great couple of friends! Well and one is of course a girlfriend to!! Haha
Have you ever tried to source a removable hardtop for the Tracker? Most have roof rails on them and look really quite decent. I think 90% of them are white as well. Just a thought.
Keep em coming, please. I am loving the variety of the current content and I think that Grom you had a friend ride the other day was far from original! Gotta see what you did in the past!! Stay safe, all of you. The grumpy old Canadian, Eh!

I was an adjuster in the 80s-90s-00s. Those trackers and the little Suzuki's with the soft top were the most broken into vehicles. The sad thing is that the people probably knew whoever it was that ripped them off.
