@@doug960 I've replaced a couple head gaskets on Hondas before and not plained anything down but i also never had half the bolts torqued and half finger tight or overheated them before hand. I'm not saying that you can't get away with just slapping a gasket in and going. Sure you can, most of the time, but sometimes not so much. If anything, I'd recommend JR check the head with a flat edge and decide for himself if he wants to plain it a bit. There's makeshift/jury rigged/ghetto ways to get it done too which makes for a fun video. I don't want to see JR spend all this time and fuckery just to have the head gasket blow two minutes after getting it running. Oh, also, if you don't decide to plain it, JR, probably hit it with some of that copper gasket spray junk. Highly recommended in the shitbox sloppy turbo world where they regularly slap junk engines together for as little money as possible. I haven't done it personally, but I've seen it work. Good luck
I told you in another vid that I had one of these, so some more advice: There’s a fantastic web site out there with forums for Sidekick enthusiasts, but I can’t remember the name. On the front, you mount the struts on the opposite side and put the spacer between the spring and mount to make up the difference. And you use Crown Vic shocks on the rear.
You're lucky that worked... I know people with serous engine problems like a rod knock, would pull the intake manifold and just say he had a water leak, or a bad head gasket, (like yours) you buy it, get it home, spend lost of time and money, only to start it up and BOOM rod knock... J.R go great deal" restoration of the tracker" just make sure the head surface of head is true & even the block😃 . I've got a Suzuki Samurai that needs a lot of part & so many extra new parts been collecting parts for awhile maybe get it running in the summer. Good luck with the build 👏🙌
The head is warped so I would resurface the head before putting it back on unless you want to do this twice. Also if the head was completely within spec before removal, you run the risk of warping it if you remove it improperly. Either way I would get the head machined, the valve guides/seals replaced, new lifters, the valve springs shimmed if needed and new cam bearings at least, so that you don't run into more hassle than you bargained for. Also, the head bolts might be TTY, which will mean you need headbolts too. I can't wait to see how it cleans up though, it's a fresh build💯💯
As a fellow car guy/ flipper, I have learned that the first thing you do- esp with cheap cars- is take the hood OFF. SOO much more room for activities. Its normally 4 bolts and you gain tons of access and approach.
The last time I did a 4 cylinder head gasket job I just left the intake manifold and the header pipe on. You have to disconnect the exhaust pipe. Remove the hoses, any metal brackets, and those pesky little plastic clips without breaking them but it is way easier to remove and install the head that way. Take the manifolds off in the comfort of your shop if you need to with the head turned to a comfortable angle. You can do this job before or after work that way.

All the 6×9 where 3 ways for super sweet mid's and highs all around and 4 bullet tweeters in the rear box with the 4 - 10"... You would hear and feel me coming from 4 blocks away... I bought a pair of Hugos back in the 1980's . The one was a salvage car that had been rebuilt. I think it was totalled hitting a grass hopper. The other one had a blown head gasket. I was going to use it for parts but it was so stupid easy to fix, I ended up repairing it on a?weekend marathon of wrenching on cars. I had a guy fix me up on any parts I needed as he bought the entire inventory of parts from the dealer. He told me the engine was a fiot 128 with Ford emissions system. Which were easy to remove and trash. He had doors, windows, all the hardware and engine parts to last a lifetime. At 60k the head gaskets always blew out. Oil leaks were common as hell on them. They would sit on the dealership showroom floor and bleed out oil . The dealer had to put an oil pain under the engine. That car reminda me so much of the Yugo. They were fun to work on but complete garbage.
When changing a timing belt, put some liquid paper on both the pulley and the belt, on the top and bottom pulleys. Then, paint at the exact same position on the new belt. This way, you won't have to worry about putting it in the right position.
If I were keep'n that truck I'd pull the short block and replace the clutch components @ this time ...it's SUPER accessible now ..then you can check the oil pan gasket and front/rear main seals too ...and a head resurface wouldn't be a bad idea as well as new head stretch bolts ..other things that might need replacing - valve guide seals .valve springs etc...also Rock Products ( DNJ Engine Components )makes awesome graphite coated head gaskets that we have found to be optimum on aluminum heads...yours would be the HGS530 kit --jus some stuff that would insure it remains on the road for a long time forward
Don't knock all the EGR and sensors: they kept that mini SUV about as fuel efficient as a Toyota Corolla ( but with half the acceleration). That little "sippy tube" at 22:22 is the air vent for the transmission. The Tracker looks somewhat well maintained, but you should replace the seals on the transmission and rear differential while you are at it. They tend to fail somewhere between 180k and 200k miles.
Thank you WatchJRGo , After watching your Flip videos I learnt about the elm 327 car diagnostic scanner and bought one to see why the engine light was on in my car. It works great and now I know the problem. Thanks.

Well I thought that engine would be trashed once you pulled the head off, considering the condition of the rest of the car. Surprised those cylinder bores look brand new. Also did you check and make sure the head wasn't warped??? It might have gotten really hot which caused the headgasket to blow and warped the cylinder head.
Always pull the head and check it and block for cracks before ordering parts. You save the troubles of returning parts and can just buy a rebuilt or used engine for less issues.
I was watching. Then I looked up and we were replacing a sump pump.. those geo’s are N O T amphibious John Ross! Also I didn’t know the basement was an option on the trackers original sales sheet (does not look that big from the outside!) 😂good luck with whatever I just watched!
I bought that head gasket kit and 4 months later i had a blown head gasket again now i bought fel-pro and had it for 2 years its like 50$ more but completely worth the money!
We had a 1995 tracker every 30 to 40 thousand we pulled the valve cover and retork the head bolts. Got around 200 out of it. Frame in the back rotted out. Asome VIDEO! (PS 24 mile to the gallon)
I didn't see if there is a check valve installed. If there isn't one, it's good to put one in so all the water in the line doesn't drain back into the sump. Otherwise nicely done! 👍
Hey man - love your videos. I'm pretty green when it comes to mechanics but have been watching your videos to learn more about it. I don't know if it's possible but it would actually be super helpful for me if you were able to start your repair videos by recording the problems and symptoms of why repairs are needed - like how it was you knew that particular part was the problem - sounds and signs etc. Possible?
My grandfather swapped an LS1 into one of these- it goes and peels. When he told me that he was putting a new motor in it, he didnt say anything about it. When i went to go help him with it, I saw the "new engine" and i asked him why- because i can.
Ya my 3 year old say because I can all the time and because I'm awesome. We been teaching him tool names and car parts sent he will seat for 2 hours watching us work on our vehicles.. be cool if he decides to be a mechanic he would be 5th generation
When that plug lead came apart like that I was half expecting the head to come off revealing a pristine head gasket because the misfire was just down to a badly-deteriorated plug lead...
They are NON interference motors. I’ve replaced belts on 3 with no issues. I also have one that I spent over $2k for machine work for a d16z6 Honda crank to fit with coated Vitara and FJT Racing ‘custom length’ rods along with a ported/polished head. I just need to send the crank out to get nitride treated then a final polish and assemble/install (for 6 years now)
Hey I had the best job ever a courier for a lab company back in the 90's ...loved that car! The tracker was my ride was a maroon LSI? BEST job and car ever!! lol
I have done a sump pump and worse, a sewage pump in my own home. I put in a battery backup as well. Sold the home and then one year later, a hurricane hit. The new owner called me asking me how long the battery would last. I told him tops, 8 hours. He did not go out and get another battery - and the basement flooded. He got a generator installed after that - and that house was inland NJ!
First point..... Taking a picture of the plug wire routing is a good idea IF.... you're sure they were in the correct order to begin with. Second..... Dude! Don't you ever sleep? 😛
If you repaint this thing or wrap it, do some obnoxious 90's color. Metallic teal, that light periwinkle blue metallic, factory pink metallic with the vinyl stripes down the side. Non metallic Smurf blue with white graphics would look cool too.
*Want to make enough money to fix your R8? Just work on Hoovie's cars in your driveway for slightly less than Wizzard charges him and you will have the money in no time.* 😂😂
When installing the timing belt you may or may not know this but if it’s the 1.6l engine then you have to base cylinder #4 on top dead center instead of cylinder #1 like you typically would with most any other timing belt or chain job on other vehicles.
Trashed, but no rust!! Amazing how everything came apart. There's a website out there (Gates I think?) where you can look up and see if you got an interference or non-interference engine Still like my noisy-ass pedestal sump pump. That's how I know it's working.
You should at least have it checked to make sure it didn't warp which would be rare for an aluminum head. Even if it does run doesn't mean it'll hold up.
Stymie Snerdly last time my truck was at a shop for a simple inspection they moved both of my seats all the way around, screwed with my mirrors, radio and everything else. It’s ridiculous, you have one job, quit touching my stuff.

Was so glad to see those shiny pistons.
Should have oiled the frame and body yearly
I didn't see if there is a check valve installed. If there isn't one, it's good to put one in so all the water in the line doesn't drain back into the sump. Otherwise nicely done! 👍
Hey man - love your videos. I'm pretty green when it comes to mechanics but have been watching your videos to learn more about it. I don't know if it's possible but it would actually be super helpful for me if you were able to start your repair videos by recording the problems and symptoms of why repairs are needed - like how it was you knew that particular part was the problem - sounds and signs etc. Possible?
that things worth about tree fiddy
I ain't giving you no tree fiddy! 😂
@Dave Pawson Better not be the bite size - was there any brand, ever, worse?
@@WatchJRGoAs this is not flip car did you try to find a Haynes manual for it? First thing I buy when I change cars.
My grandfather swapped an LS1 into one of these- it goes and peels. When he told me that he was putting a new motor in it, he didnt say anything about it. When i went to go help him with it, I saw the "new engine" and i asked him why- because i can.
Nick Leroux That phrase leads to some of the best things in life.
Ya my 3 year old say
because I can all the time and because I'm awesome. We been teaching him tool names and car parts sent he will seat for 2 hours watching us work on our vehicles.. be cool if he decides to be a mechanic he would be 5th generation
Looking forward to the finished result of this tracker! Can't wait to hear it run and with a new top/upgrades!
I like your videos. Nice to see a fellow tinkerers.
When that plug lead came apart like that I was half expecting the head to come off revealing a pristine head gasket because the misfire was just down to a badly-deteriorated plug lead...
When it comes to working on cars a 2x4 always come in handy!
They make it seem so easy I think I'm ditching college and going straight to trade school for mechanics!
They are NON interference motors. I’ve replaced belts on 3 with no issues.
I also have one that I spent over $2k for machine work for a d16z6 Honda crank to fit with coated Vitara and FJT Racing ‘custom length’ rods along with a ported/polished head. I just need to send the crank out to get nitride treated then a final polish and assemble/install (for 6 years now)
The geo is the best car you have now
Hey I had the best job ever a courier for a lab company back in the 90's ...loved that car! The tracker was my ride was a maroon LSI? BEST job and car ever!! lol
C’mon man, if you’re gonna rebuild the engine, buy aftermarket exhaust to give that bad boy some more power for Amberghini.
Just work on Hoovie's cars in your driveway for slightly less than Wizzard charges him and you will have the money in no time.* 😂😂
He doesn't have the space for that many cars! 😁
Your videos are so fun to watch
When installing the timing belt you may or may not know this but if it’s the 1.6l engine then you have to base cylinder #4 on top dead center instead of cylinder #1 like you typically would with most any other timing belt or chain job on other vehicles.
Trashed, but no rust!! Amazing how everything came apart.
There's a website out there (Gates I think?) where you can look up and see if you got an interference or non-interference engine
Still like my noisy-ass pedestal sump pump. That's how I know it's working.
How about checking the cylinder head and block for plane? Is the head warped? It'll blow the gasket again...
@Joe Copa gonna have to eat those words when the next video drops 💯
You should at least have it checked to make sure it didn't warp which would be rare for an aluminum head. Even if it does run doesn't mean it'll hold up.
lol you are amazing. my mechanic with this engine they hang the entire engine and fix it on the ground.
Nice man. Enjoying this series so far.
Love to see young folks turning wrenches.
Trashed hood on a $600 Geo, and he's worried about sliding a box & scratching the paint. If only every mechanic had the respect & work ethic of JR. 👍
Stymie Snerdly last time my truck was at a shop for a simple inspection they moved both of my seats all the way around, screwed with my mirrors, radio and everything else. It’s ridiculous, you have one job, quit touching my stuff.
Best little car I love them I have to 1987 Suzuki samurai best thing ever
Can’t wait to see it go back together - looks really complex :)
This was enjoyable to watch. Holdin out for the next one.
