Can You Tell the Difference Between a $500 and a $200,000 Watch?

  • You can always find disparity in everything. Take the $9,000 Dacia Sandero and the $2million Bugatti Chiron, for example, a pair of cars that have a price ratio of over two hundred to one. You think that’s a lot? Then take a look at these: the $500 Sugess Tourbillon Master and the $200,000 A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst, which have a price ratio of double that of the Sandero and Chiron. Two watches that are, on paper, the same. What on Earth is going on? But the real question remains: Can You Tell the Difference Between a $500 and a $200,000 Watch?

I don't know anything about watches except they tell time, but I think the gold watch is prettier. But I don't need a hole in the face showing the gears spinning. I guess if you're a watch nerd, that's impressive to see gears inside other gears in order to make a clockwork small enough fit on a wrist. But I don't care about that, any more than I care about how many franistats my car's engine has. That seems to be a growing trend in watches, from $20 watches on eBay to million dollar watches at fancy jewelry stores. A $20 Timex is good enough for me as long as it keeps accurate time, and I don't care how shiny and polished the gears are, lol. But thanks for the video! I enjoyed it and thought that gold watch was beautiful!

The Sugess is a fine watch for a price that would've been considered impossible even ten years ago. A tasteful design, enamel dial and tourbillion for $500? Not bad at all. It will never be an AL&S and isn't trying to be. I just wish the Chinese manufacturers would go to a little extra effort in keeping the parts clean during assembly. Nothing is more depressing than seeing smudges of grease and dust on what should be a perfect little machine. Some Swiss companies screw that up too, which is unforgivable considering their greater experience and higher prices.

I like these pieces for different reasons.
    1. The Sugess is gorgeous. Truly gorgeous, and it is real. It’s a real tourbillion, and it is clear that care was taken to make it something special.
    2. The A. Lange & Söhne is equally beautiful, but for different reasons. It was made to be beautiful, and made by hand. Sure, the Chinese model did it cheaper, but like a hand built V12, or a Corvette Z06’s V8, you can see a sense of pride that was taken in the craft of her build. Some individual didn’t just clock in (no pun intended) and get to work, rather they worked to create art. Art that took countless years to perfect and finish.
In short, you buy these two for different reasons: you buy the Sugess to appreciate the tourbillion. You buy the A. Lange & Söhne to appreciate the art of the piece.

fun fact about the sugess - since those tourbillons are so cheap to make, most swiss watch manufacturers actually use those tourbillons because legally only 60% of the value of the watch has to come from swiss craftsmen in order to be considered a swiss watch.

I recently bought a Sugess watch. It was the starry sky, reference MG 177. It's got a Seagull ST2528 movement. And my watchmaker talked rubish about it just because it was Chinese. Sadly, my unit came with dried up oil, most likely because it was sitting there for quite some time. But man... Not all Chinese movements are created the same. And he swallowed his words when he opened it, observed at it up close and personal and saw the perlage decoration all over the movement. That's what it took him to chill and agree to service it. But he compared my watch to other $20 scrap movements he had laying around. I wonder what he'd say about that beautiful tourbillion. It even has an enamel dial!

Take the caliber out, and try to sell it, you will get the day gold price (probably 300 Euro). But let's stick to facts. First, prices are completely idiotic. This started somewhere in the eighties. Antique watches became collectors items. While some years before, I walked in to a shop, and bought a Calatrava brand Patek, for 1500 Dutch guilders. Some 700 Euro's now. No one wanted the old winding thing, everyone wanted a quarts. Fl. 1500, was less than a month salary to me. Buying a Calatrava today, try to buy it on a years salary!

Sugess has some really nice watches out and I am going to get a few because they are such amazing value. Even on sale when I looked so a watch like in the video is under $300us. Still I like my high end watches and that A. Lange & Söhne is beyond beautiful and beyond a work of art. It's something if I was lucky to ever own one would see me just sitting for hours watching it and enjoying the amazing level of craftsmanship.

Chinese are known for their love for quality. Make no mistake about that. I have a very similar, if not exact the same watch like the Sugess (without the Tourbillion) and it's a very nice watch, well made, reliable HW-er.

A fantastic video today. I feel we should all celebrate a shared hobby which sees both these watches existing. The Sugess is a remarkable watch for the money while the AL&S is just remarkable in every way. While most of us can only ever afford the former, I am grateful that there are those to can fund and support the latter allowing all of us to see the artistry of high-end watch making. £200k is a lot of money, but in a world where people have no issue with blowing millions on a piece of fabric with paint on it, there is some degree mitigation.

I think its about damned time that people in the wristwatch community tipped their hats to the fact that you can purchase a high quality tourbillon for less than 1,000$. That alone makes the sugess and other similar models from china as much of a trailblazer/innovation as the A.L.&S. they're two complete polar opposites, one is an achievement in unbridled craftsmanship and art at no thought of cost, and the other is an engineering marvel and unbridled artistic expression while constrained to a very tight budget and strapped to mass-manufacturing production protocols. The fact that the sugess looks as good as it does is brain-bending. Its a gorgeous watch. Its absolutely gorgeous. And I'm sure its "more hand made" than most of the chinese offerings due to the level of complexity, but remember, this thing was designed to be punched out in a factory, and is still managing to be a pleasing peace of artwork and reliable engineering. To me this is just as breathtaking and noteworthy of an undertaking as the handcrafted tourbillons. The sugess represents the impossible. Because until the chinese figured out how to mass produce such a complex watch, it simply "could not be done". So if I buy a 500$ tourbillon and the works are less than spotless, that's OK. it was built in a factory that probably also stamps out 500 thousand 10 dollar quartz watches a day. THAT ALONE IS AMAZING TO ME. Plus, for 500 dollars, you could purchase one of these and take it STRAIGHT to a fine watchmaker and have them disassemble, clean, re-assemble, and calibrate it for you and you'd still be under 1,000$ and it would then absolutely spotless and pristene at that point. with my current budget I could only afford the sugess. But if money was no object I'd have both. The sugess for regular wear, and I'd put on the handmade one for nights on the town or date night or parties or get togethers. Why? Because even if I could afford the lange, the sugess is as much of a work of art in a completely different way from a completely different direction, and I just can't help but appreciate it. Its a modern marvel to say the least.

You can't put a price on aesthetic perfection. It shouldn't be difficult, but it's the absurdly expensive watches that send that perception of "rightness" flowing through my mind. Obviously there is a law of diminishing returns. If you want that "right" feeling and can afford the Lange, go for it.
