- Thank you to Garmin and Neal Aviation for sponsoring this video!
Today, we're starting the restoration of my 1949 Cessna 140A! We'll take off from Camarillo, fly through busy Socal airspace, and land at Neal Aviation (www.nealaviation.com/ ) for a panel refresh and Garmin avionics install. The avionics install will add a WAAS GPS, increased radio functionality, an ADS-B traffic display, and a digital attitude indicator and HSI display while keeping the panel vintage. We'll take an inside look at the avionics install process and you'll even get a sneak peek at the new panel!
In the next video, we'll fly Lil Ugly from Gillespie Field to Santa Maria for new paint and interior at ArtCraft - stay tuned! Thank you for watching!

You know you're flying a Cessna when you have a bird strike...and it's from behind. Looking forward to this transformation.
😂😂
Hahahaha
😂😂😂
But she is still flying😂🎉
Now that was a truly funny comment. Thanks.
Love your radio work. You always sound excited but in control and seem to pass that happy feeling to the controllers - you can hear their voice change while talking with you. Even though they are short interactions. Infectious enthusiasm!
Would love to see/hear her and LU in the pattern at JFK
Amazing how birds made to fly don't have a Garmin gps or radio or have midairs...yet somehow get there
@@cjswa6473They have had lots of practice

The wing camera looking into the plane is awesome. Very crisp, high res. Keep using that 🙏🏼
As a Private Pilot who can no longer fly, I’m enjoying your adventures. You’re doing a fine job.
Always an amazing experience flying with you Stevie. Such a wonderful pilot and your excitement is contagious. Thanks for sharing your journey(s) with us.
With my birth date still being before that of any aircraft you own, it gives me great pleasure to see you trying to keep us "old f@rts" flying!!!! Old and Slow is an everyday thing with me now, I'm sorry to say. (It's extremely frustrating waking up every day with another "challenge" responding with..."This is new." followed immediately by "Dammit!!!" As you mentioned in your pre-flight checklist, things back when I was young were "Very Simple!!!" Thank you for trying to keep vintage aircraft in the air, Stevie!!! And please keep the great videos coming!!!
Hi Stevie…I have been flying for 53 years all over the world in everything from a Cherokee to 747s.
I still write a sheet with all the freqs and pertinent info. All the fancy navs aside it is what’s in your head that counts. Keep ‘em flying!
The mix of vintage and digital is gonna look so good!
CaliCameraGuy - absolutely loved this on all levels!!! I learn so much just from watching (I'm not a flier). I really enjoy all the camera views and edits. This is going to be fun!
As a rural pilot I appreciate your radio work. Following along helps me with mine.
Hi Stevie I am a 6000 hour jet pilot and have flown through that entire area many times and your knowledge and flying skills are so impressive, you have know your stuff flying
in that area, Lots of airspace all entertwined. I love how you keep the vintage look of your airplanes, another great video, looking forward to seeing the finished results of her.
You are a very good Pilot. I am happy for you because you deserve the upgrades on your Cessna. Your trip to Oshkosh with your very new but old Aircraft will be a “Show Stopper”
Geez I’m always so impressed with your radio skills. I need more practice!
Girl, I love your style. The Bonanza turned out great with the retro vintage look and this will too! Thanks for saving a couple of pieces of aviation history and making them better along the way.
Lil ugly is lil cutie to me, but I grew up around antique and vintage aircraft. Glad you’re paying homage to its roots while making it modern. Looking forward to following. Its progress!
BTW, I love your taste in music! Sets the mood well with all your videos.
Hey Stevie, thanks for another great video! You drew back the curtain a little in this flight, revealing a tiny part of what you do behind the scenes to ensure your flights are safe, smooth and (mostly) run to plan (i.e. your trip plan)! Would you share a little more of this with us in future and show us what goes in to planning a multi-leg flight, such as your one to Oshkosh? I'm sure I and others would benefit from this in our own flying and flight planning.
Stevie, you are setting the standard for GA. Awesome job!
This thing is 74 years old ??? Respect to you flying this, and congratulations! 👍
Grew up in Oxnard, next door to Camarillo and now live in San Diego, so love following your flights to see my old stomping grounds! Love your enthusiasm!
I took my tailwheel and high performance at SEE. Always especially fun to see familiar places I haven't seen in many years. Of course always fun to see a younger pilot practice stick, rudder, and tailwheel skills. Enjoy your 140. I remember how much fun the 170 & especially the 15O TD conversion was. Taught me so much!
For as old as that airplane is, that interior looks fantastic. What a great find!
Really like how you’ve kept the vintage look of these panels without sacrificing the latest greatest in avionics. Great video work too Stevie!
Oh wow the panel looks SO GOOD in the sneak peek!!! Love the silver outlined instruments and the cream dash looks so good. Love that you kept the old school airspeed indicator too! I can’t wait to see the whole thing bc I want get a 140 and update it to something similar to this as well
Super Stevie, Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. So informative and educational. You always articulate perfectly to the tower and viewers. 140 is a fun airplane and can't beat the view. Your really dropping some coin on this bird Stevie I hope you win a bunch of shows. I love seeing this come together like the Bonanza.
Hi there! I've been watching your videos on RUclips for a few weeks now, and they're simply fascinating. You've really inspired me, which is why I've decided to pursue the Private Pilot License. Aviation has always fascinated me, but it wasn't financially possible for me before. Greetings from switzerland
What a great place to learn to fly!!!
I really appreciate that youre keeping the vintage feel of both planes as you have their panels redone!
Glad to see you went tailwheel.
I love when you take us along on your trips.
Its always so fun, fresh, and educational.
Thank you very much!
Mellanie 'Mel' Boone
I can't wait til you get your Lil Cessna finished....
Thank you taking us on this trip! This will be a beautiful Plane again. And the first view on the instruments was amazing! Best from Switzerland. Daniel
Your radio skills are amazing, wow✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈
Brilliant video. Editing and content - superior. And your flying; situational awareness, mission planning, and radio procedures = Excellent. (USAF EP, Retired).
I live minutes away from Gillespie Field I love watching your videos, I flew in my friends, Cessna from Gillespie Field to Paris Valley airport to do a sky dive then we flew back . pretty cool experience. Your videos are very interesting. I find myself wanting to learn what all this lingo means , I get a lot of it but I want to learn more, and that’s not a good thing with my addictive personality. That was Cool! watching you land and taxi in my neighborhood . Now I regret not going into working on Cessna’s instead of automotive. Oh well Your hobby seems a little bit out of my payroll . Props to you !Keep it up.
This 1 was fun to watch. In the 90's, I used to learn how to fly out of Camaro. Keep up the good work and keep flying.
Great to end my week with a Stevie flying video! I really want to see both planes in Beatrice on your way to Oscosh!
Its nice to see your excitement and enthusiasm for flying and see you enjoy your adventures, your cheerful personality is engaging ✌️♥️🇬🇧 much love Stevie, stay happy and safe.
I love watching your videos! And your radio work is amazing! You are so fluid talking to ATC and switching frequencies. This little airplane is going to be beautiful!❤️
As someone who grew up in the 70's & 80's in the LA basin I am always shocked to see how much the air quality has improved. Back them the only way the air wouldn't be dark brown or orange is if there were Santa Ana winds or after a winter storm.
I was a kid in the 80's but flew into the L.A. basin pretty regularly from the SF Bay Area. I remember that too. It was pretty much IMC conditions all the time due to the smog.
I flew into LAX for the first time in 1977. It was a clear day everywhere else, but the entire LA area was covered in a brown smog. You couldn’t see the city until you got close to the ground.
That is great to seeing you upgrading the airplane to make it look more modern but feel old school. Can't wait to see the new paint and interior as well as seeing the new panel in action. Thanks for bringing us along on this journey, and since you should be leaving for Oshkosh soon, have a safe trip
This was a lot of fun...Lil Ugly is a beautiful plane which is lucky to have you as it's owner.
Love your videos. All cameras are in great spots on the plane for great viewing. You make the radio work look easy, but I know it takes a lot of patience and practice. You're awesome. I wish I could fly!
really loving the outside camera angle! you've done a great job on placement showing the plane, prop and some landscape.
also this plane has some real character, I like the old school yoke.
I watched this video last in the series of 3 videos and that really had me noticing all the 'old plane' issues with this aircraft. It's really an ugly duckling here and Stevie restores her into a beautiful Swan. In fact the restoration completely transforms the aircraft and resets it back to looking very classic with modern avionics and lighting.
Inspired by your confident competence. You always know exactly what you’re doing. Love watching your fights.
I was once told by center "hope you packed a lunch...56 kts" and totally feel your pain :) When you see the same yellow VW Beetle on the highway below for an hour, you know its gonna be a long day. Love the plane Stevie!
Such an infectious series of videos! Interesting, entertaining and full of information and great views of your flights. I don't fly for real, but I replicate your flights in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Looking forward to the final reveal!
The rear view camera is such a great idea!
I still think “Lil Ugly” is beautiful, more so now that we’ve seen a flight! In my college days, I spent many hours watching planes take off and land at Gillespie. Great memories!
Stevie. Thank you for sharing your Love of aviation with all of us!
..way to go..little Stevie-o..and please..keep em coming..
It's so exciting and relaxing at the same time to watch.
Thank you!
It sounds like you have given all of the changes considerable thought and we are excited to see the finished product. Thanks so much for sharing these great videos with us.
So exciting! Can’t wait for the final transformation.🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
Vintage- planes, cars, boats 👍
Would have loved to photographed your plane coming in or exiting Gillespie Field…. Have fun
Love flying with you Stevie! Very excited to watch the transformation of the 140A.
To get all this work done before oshkosh Is a tall order. This young lady is awesome. Totally impressive.
I actually like the drab gray metal interior. I also love bare metal exteriors (especially when highly polished). I'm sure your choice for the new interior and exterior finishes will be great though, and also be consistent with the classic vintage look of the aircraft. I like the care you're taking to modernize the instrument panel while also maintaining the classic look and feel.
Loving these videos!! Can’t wait for the finished product!
I'm excited to see the upgrades and how they function. Thanks again !
Thanks Stevie, such a great series, my first flight ever was in a Taylor craft, will never forget it
Your enthusiasm gots me going can’t wait to see the finished product!
Your videos are very calming and serene. I enjoy watching. Thanks.
Small world. You mentioned Santa Maria. I grew up there. Then it was the perfect place to grow up. Good people, fantastic weather and avila was a great beach.
The little 140 is going to be really sharp after its makeover! Good luck Stevie!
Thank you so much!
I love the vibe of your channel so chill and upbeat.
The two lovely aircraft are so cute in their own unique way. Stevie enjoy all the adventures ahead on the 140 and Bonanza can see you absolutely ❤ your aircraft 🎉
What a fabulous video, I just love your enthusiasm and happiness over the C140 and its renovation and improvements. Looking forward to seeing the next instalment!
Can't wait to see the whole upgrade! Judging by the sneak peak, things are looking pretty awesome. And Garmin avionics are amazing.
Lil Ugly is going to look so good! It already does. Cannot wait to see the new paint scheme. Really like the color of the new panel and the chrome around the gauges
1. I love your love for classic aircraft. It makes me so happy when I see you flying them.
2. I really enjoy watching you pilot. You style just makes me smile every time I get to watch one of your videos.
3. Thanks for the regular posts. I, as I am sure others, appreciate watching them.
I did some IT consulting many years ago in Ontario, California. Flew in and out of that airport every weekend for a solid 9 months. Neat area around there.
Amazing to see a 1949 Cessna aircraft..Working so well...❤
You are a good pilot, I like all the prep you do to insure there are no surprises!
I love your detailed vids with all the radio banter. I’ll never be a pilot, but the radio interaction is so interesting. Thank you. Can’t wait to see the transformation.
I love your planning before the flight, and I can’t wait to see the finished upgrades . I hope the engine is going to be looked at unless it’s already been addressed before you purchased and it’s all good , it seems to not be an issue and running good.
I can't wait to see the great job of restoring and updating this classic tail skate. Greetings from Argentina.
You have a new plane!! 😍
Your videos make me smile from ear to ear 😊.
Hi Stevie! You are doing great job. You love your plane and I love you and really excited to see you again. Thanks for sharing your journey.
….Carbon fiber wheel pants…in the vintage “toaster style” are a must! I really liked the way my 140 was transformed by them!
So fun to watch! I know nothing about airplanes and flying so this is extra cool.
I love that you're making content again. I can't wait to see all the adventures!!! I also love the tan cream color you went with. Can't wait to see the finished product!!!
Great video! Thanks for the time and effort you go through to do all of this!
The "Cajon Zone." It should be nice and warm in that valley right now...
I started flying in a 140 and found it quite easy. I'm excited to see the finished product.
Great video Stevie. Can't wait to see the finished product
So excited to see the finished reno!
You are such an inspiration and I always look forward to your videos! 🥰🫶🏻
love that your in your posting era I live for your videos!
The trim wheel looks super cute, awesome plane!
I love this. You are rejuvenating an airplane that is the same age as me😊.
Loved the TripTik sheet. What a great idea, so simple. I'm gonna start doing that! Panel sounds like it's going to be great too. Will keep watching...
Great video Stevie great job of flying. Very interesting video. I can't wait to see your new panel and I'm sure you will be alot more comfortable flying with all the new instruments on board. Flying the 140 like it was was like Flying bare bones. Flying the 140 to Oshkosh from California at 70 knots will be a long one. Look forward to next video. I love them all! Larry
You are really good. Fly safe and have fun.
5:13 That tailwheel pops right up!
This is so impressive! Love the updates!
I used to live down the street from Gillespie. Can't wait to see lil ugly with all her upgrades! Hope all is well Stevie!
Can’t wait to see how the Cessna will look like. Great videos.
Happy new years🎉
Die Optik der Maschine ist klasse, ich hoffe sie bleibt in diesem Look😍
Thanks mate, love these vids
Amazed with every video.
Stevie you are inspirational to follow your dreams.
