Lil Ugly isn't so ugly any more! Today, we're taking my 1949 Cessna 140A, N9477A, home from ArtCraft (artcraftpaint.com/about-us/st... ) with new paint and interior. We'll also take a look at the new Garmin avionics and panel installed by Neal Aviation (www.nealaviation.com/ )! Fly southbound with me down the California coast on a gorgeous summer day - we'll even do a little air-to-air photoshoot along the way. Once we're back at the hangar, we'll take a closer look at the restoration.
I will be at EAA AirVenture 2023 all week with both 77A and 21C at the Garmin booth! Check out my Instagram @bayflight for more information on where you can find me at Oshkosh throughout the week.
Thanks for watching!

Thank you all for watching! I’m aware that the door seal needs some adjusting on the right side - it was properly latched and is a non issue. Just annoying if anything, haha. I appreciate everyone’s concern!
your welcome stevie safe travels
at 11:00 I could not help noticing that the upper part of the starboard door frame is not snug against the fuselage. Some daylight is visible when the frame shakes. All the best.
Yeah, I noticed it too, but she is just so happy and proud of it, I didn’t want to mention it
Anyone know how long she’s been flying? She knows her stuff, and is super safe while checking, repeating two and even 3 times…Id go up with her in a second!!
I worked for a commercial airline when I was young and saw some funky stuff while flying jumpseat…as well as being on the ground
Haven’t been in a commercial craft for 42yrs, and I imagine (or hope) the rules are stricter today🤔
But I would never hesitate going up in any (flight worthy) single engine airplane, ever!!
Totally normal 140 stuff. Move along nothing to see here :-)
lcongrats, ooks so good. i'll be out on sat to see in person.
You’ll have to call her Lil’Beauty now. She’s gorgeous inside and out.
I was going to say that but you beat me to it by 54 minutes! Congrats, Ronn
💯
Alan Clark. In UK. I agree. As soon as Stevie added that afterthought I said Its got to be " Little beauty". What a beautiful transformation. You should be immensely proud of what you and the various companies have done .
Yup....Obviously it has to be Lil'Beauty.
Lil Hottie!
Looks great. Might want to check your right side door. You can see daylight through the seal and it's flopping around.
I was thinking the same thing.
She looks marvelous.
I saw that too.
Yeah, didn’t realize it did that until now. I think the door is just slightly warped because it latches all the way
@@bayflightJust imagine how much more quieter it will be inside once that’s sorted. My daughter and I love your videos…can’t wait for the upcoming XC video.
My father was an airline pilot. 1953 to 1980. He would have appreciated your dedication to the Check List. Something that he felt saved lives.
I’m 54 and working towards my private pilot’s certification. I have learned so much from her videos. Her adherence to checklists and comms are as good as I’ve ever heard.
The restoration reveals Stevies passion for preserving aviation history. The interior upgrade is as impressive as the exterior. Just beautiful in every detail
The Cessna lettering under the prop is gorgeous. The entire plane is gorgeous now.
You mentioned you didn’t like art deco. Newsflash, that plane is pure art deco. The fonts, the paint design, the piano keys, all art deco. And its beautiful!
I've never thought that the 140 was an ugly duckling but your little plane has become a SWAN indeed. What a fantastic job - a lovely little plane to be proud of! An inspiration!
It looks so good Stevie!!! This is so inspiring.
Absolutely! You and Stevie are my main motivators to get into tech and get into aviation, and start a RUclips once I'm in aviation! Thank you both!
If she flies the 140 at 50 knots and you crank the speed bar on your small wing, y'all might be able to pull off a formation flying RUclipsr colab. Please make it happen!
We have the same name. 👍
Thank you so much!!!
Time to renew that fix wing licence. 😁
Starboard door is fluttering, and can see daylight coming through the weatherstripping, but she looks absolutely beautiful!!
Good point it’s possible that latch is needing adjustment or the door seal, maybe both ✅
Was the door latch fully closed? Lovely looking ac brings back memories of visiting Camarillo show and nearby Santa Paula…
Door latch is so easy to fix
That scared the hell out of me too
Haha yeah, common on most old Cessnas. Door was latched. Thank you!
Wow, what a beautiful 140. I can't wait to see it at Oshkosh!
The paint is lovely, but the main win here (for me) is the panel. It would've been so easy to lose the character, but despite the update she still looks like she's from the 40's. So beautiful.
You are such a breath of fresh air. An old soul for sure. Gifted with maturity beyond your years. And all that with natural beauty and talent! My respect!
It's very cool the way you were able to preserve the classic panel look but include glass. Looks REALLY good.
Thank-you for sharing your aviation journey! Love your energy and enthusiasm for all things related to taking flight!
My grandfather had a 140A and my whole life I've had a framed photo of him leaning against it like some sort of 50's hipster. This is a beautiful specimen and I enjoyed watching it with my young daughters.
I gotta say the best part of my day today was seeing this plane all fixed up. I'm not a pilot but I love your vids.
My dad had a 140 when i was a kid and we had so many great bonding moments in that little plane. He's been gone for some years now and i miss him. Thank you for the memories.
Same here! And later a 172.
Again, thank you for making the effort to keep the original / vintage look of the panel (as much as possible with the new avionics). Old guys like me really appreciate your generation doing their best to keep the original / vintage look, while upgrading the avionics for safety. Great Job, Stevie. Please keep the great videos coming!!!!
Looks like Penn State to me. Well done restoration . Go Buckeyes!
The plane is absolutely beautiful. I’m impressed with everybody who worked on it. As you watch the video, the camera facing you, look at the passenger door up by the window. It looks like it could use a slightly better seal. I can see some light through it. Other than that I’m jealous.
I saw it too, good eye my friend........
I wonder if there is air noise
Yeah, it’s either the seal or the door being barely warped from 70+ years of use. Either way, door was latched and the airplane was airworthy. Might improve wind noise a minuscule amount but it doesn’t bother me too much!
A great transformation! What a great preservation of the ole girl. Looks like that passenger door is in line for the next repair.
Awesome transformation! Little Ugly should now be "Lil Beauty"
I'm new to this channel....what a fabulous little plane... It's hard to believe it's 1949. Awesome
Very sharp, Stevie! Elegantly done.
Congrats on 77A’s amazing transformation, Stevie! She deserves to be referred to now as Li’l Blue! 😊
The panel of your plane is so classy - I love the combination of the chrome bezels and the Garmin displays.
Thank you so much!
Just such a very beautiful young lady, in a very beautiful airplane, wish you clear skies and always a safe and enjoyable flights!
I just stopped an old car video by Jay Leno to come watch Stevie’s latest as soon as my iPad told me it was available. That just goes to show how interesting and fun Stevie’s videos really are! And yeah, it’s certainly not “little ugly” now!
What's old is new again. Absolutely stunning restoration.
Little Belle....just sounds right for a new name.....excellent results! Looks fantastic!!
That redo of the 140A is extraordinary! Well done.
In this day and age watching your enthusiasm restoring the 140 was uplifting, we seldom see a younger person have any respect for anything vintage, and in your case seeing a young lady displaying so much pride and passion restoring, upgrading, and extending the life of that pane is uplifting. Your plane is only 1 year older than me and appreciate your passion. Safe flying.
Right on
Completely agree. An inspiration
From “Lil Ugly” to “Ole Blue”, the rebirth of vintage aviation.
Lovely restoration. It looks like a totally different aircraft. Job well done.
Absolutely beautiful refurbishment of the 140A!!
I don't know where a 25 yr old software engineer, owner of two planes goes from here, but wherever that is you will have no problem getting there. You should be an inspiration to every young person out there!
Flexjet!
Wherever she wants. I’m so proud of her and I have no connection to her whatsoever. She’s a hardworking professional and the sky is literally the limit.
Beautiful restoration and something to be proud about. Compliments from a retired 74 captain former Luftansa.
I enjoyed watching the transformation of your Cessna 140. It is a beautiful airplane! One of the reasons that I was so interested in your video is that when I was a small boy my Dad was a member of a local flying club that owned two of these 140’s. He did his pilots training in them and one of them had the same color scheme as yours ,same stripes and tired red. This was in the early 60’s my Dad passed in 2021 and I am 69 years old now. I have a lot of great memories of flying with my Dad. Thanks for posting!
What a blast video ! Nicely done !
Wow, young lady!! You're rockin, that aircraft!! Thanks for allowing us to tag along on your adventures! and a BIG congrats from Bakersfield!
You need an updated photo for FlightRadar24. You did a great job putting this together. Congratulations on the more than refresh.
Aww, I miss the Butterfly Bonanza. This is a beautiful airplane, wishing you all the very best!
Glass panel functionality in round “gauges.” That is the absolutely perfect application for those units.
WOW what a transformation. Not ugly no more.
Beautiful job! Way to save another one!!
I don't know what the resto cost but it was worth every penny. Now your plane looks stunning.
1949 and still going! With classic machines, once you realise your’re just the current custodian, its a lot easier to justify the expenditure!😎
I really like how you kept the vintage feel yet brought the plane into the 21st century!
Also a pleasure to meet you. OG!
I used to fly my Cessna 150G (1967.) This little 1949 bird has far more character and beauty than my plane ever had. Great job!
Check your passenger door, the upper corner is flapping around. It might need some adjustment or a new seal. Maybe it is normal. Beautiful airplane.
I noticed that too. Probably bend back in shape or just needs a new seal. But what a lovely transformation!
Plane looks great and nice to see a young lady who loves vintage.
Awesome job there! You could call her "Go-ing Blue".
Love the Lil’ Beauty! The shine on the wings is awesome! From your outboard camera, you can se a perfect reflection of the ground!
Blue skies to you!
Marauderjoe
I have been dying for this video to be released! Lil ugly’s new name should be Lil beauty! It’s truly a very beautiful airplane all over! Inside and out!
That is the prettiest 140A I've ever seen. Your sponsors do incredible work and your tastes for vintage aircraft are spot on. Thanks for sharing.
Damn the vintage lettering front looks SO SO stunning. absolutely unreal job retro modernizing it
One of my forever regrets is selling my 1946 C-140 when I went to flight school, such a short-sighted financial decision. Sadly, I found pictures of it upside down in a field after a windstorm. RIP N89429.
I cant get over how amazing that airplane looks now!!!
Love the panel. I'm really glad you were able to preserve the vintage feel because I really liked way the panel looked.
That plane came out so nice.
I especially like the instrument panel.
You have done a great job. It is beautiful. When I was 5 years old my dad had a cessna 140. And my earliest memory was in that airplane. Also, my dad is now watching your video. He is 97 years old and smiling like a child.
Lil Ugly should probably be called the Wolverine now - the ultimate Michigan plane!
Or Little Wolverine
What a result, the retro Cessna lettering is icing on the cake, exquisite all the way around!
Hello again pretty Stevie, your 49 Cessna is simplistic in perfection! Can't wait for the skirts. Man is Artcraft super. As always keep your eyes to the skies for those ever-lovin UFOs.❤❤❤
I got to stop by and see the 140A today! Wow!
Just after passing GVO it looks like the right door really is vibrating a lot 😅 almost like it's not latched properly? I love the new look of this beautiful bird!
Holy cow, that thing is beautiful. Love that you kept the vintage feel throughout.
Stevie...Your 140 turned out nothing short of awesome! I love it!❤ I hope it continues to bring you joyous adventures! 😃
Little beauty. What a transformation
Good work Stevie! Again! Classic beauty kept classy and retro as it should. Neal Aviation’s work on the panel is awesome! Congratulations Stevie!
The change is both dramatic and stunning. Totally awesome.
Absolute perfection on the resto!!! It looks like the plane should have looked from the factory. She's now a "Lil' Cutie"...just like her pilot.
Love your videos...I live in Cancún, I have 57 years old...and rigth now I'm finishing my course pilot...my dream is have my own airplane...so your videos inspire to me...thanks so much...Juan Carlos
Love the LED lighting and very classic avionics panel. The colors and paint design are beautiful. You did a great job of maintaining the original looks with some modern touches.
This restoration is world-class as if the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum techs did it. The interior is just magnificent! Yes, the panel restoration leaves me speechless. ❤Congrats to all of the crew that had a hand in this restoration!!!!
Hello from Minnesota!! Great episode!! I can't wait to see the 140 in person!
That plane looks Dynamite!!
You did awesome with the airplane! It looks amazing! Love the old lettering :)
You are an exceptional pilot, Stevie. You make it look easy, when, in fact, there are a myriad of things to attend to when in the air in a crowded sky like Southern California. Have a great trip to Oshkosh, fair tailwinds. And, congrats, the plane turned out beautiful.
Your communication skills are impeccable. The flight knowledge level you exhibit creates a strong sense of confidence, from a passenger’s point of view.
YESSS, I’m 54 and working towards my private pilot certification I’ve learned so much watching her comms.
Bluebird might be a good name for your N9477A Cessna 140A superb restoration.
I like the Indie Rock music selections for the choreography. . . nice
Stevie your plane turned out so good. The base paint is the perfect color. It’s white with a hint of crème. I am sure you will but you should share picture of the final look with last owners. They will me amazed of the final look. Thanks for sharing the process of the restoration. The team at art craft, flight lines and Neal aviation you did a really nice job. This plane will be a nice addition to your portfolio.
Let them know of this post.
I’ve been waiting. So cool. Can’t call her ugly anymore!
‘Lil Fancy
With that garmin kit and aesthetics, it’s just a little bit fancy!
Hi Stevie, thanks for sharing your journey with us. I wish you always a safe landing.
You are fun to watch. Your enthusiasm is something to be proud of. Kudos for a well thought out restoration of a classic little airplane.
It’s ridiculous how good that interior looks!!
Does it have that new leather smell? I love that!!
Old Blue would be fitting for your Cessna 140A Love the fact that you kept the vintage feel
I Like "lil cutey"....just like the super cute and talented owner !!! 😊
I'm a commercial airline pilot and I still find this so entertaining and inspiring
Classically BEAUTIFUL ... Great Job !! You didn't disappoint - well done.
Congrats with a great looking 140A! Old dogs can get a shine, for sure. With a smart looking kite like that, it stands up to your moviestar wibe beautifully. Great looks all around.
Stevie, great paint scheme, the blue cowl was a good choice. Very pretty 140!
Great looking plane, inside and outside! Great job!
She looks fantastic!
Yes she does and great personality, but lets not forget the plane and how fantastic it looks now !
"Naomi", as in "Navy [blue] of Michigan". Remarkable video, project, and accomplishment. Safe travels always. Enjoy Oshkosh!
Hello Stevie, I'm a big fan. I love your Cessna 140A it looks awesome. Anyway, enjoy your beautiful Cessna. 😎
The fonts, the colors, everything is perfect - you and your team nailed it. Just like cruising around in a vintage car today, must be a blast to fly that thing.
Wow. What a transformation on the 140A. It looks amazing!! Nice job picking the colors and the design of the stripes.
My Dad’s C140 was N73044 (IIRC). Had a similar paint scheme to yours. The plane was once owned by author of Weekend Pilot and I’d Rather Be Flying!
Yeah, definitely nice, that preflight sure shows off her beauty….
