Many songs from the time when we were young, listen now. What today's artists will leave behind? I do not believe to reach this sounds, these emotions, this mood that created Liza Minnelli!
A lot of people don't realize but this song was written for her; not Frank Sinatra......saw her live about 20 years ago and I have never seen such a phenomenal entertainer! She had 5 standing ovations......love her!
God damn... Literally everything is a picture of theatricality and talent! From the first note, to the last note, to the final pose. Just watch her right hand the whole time! What a testament to this woman as a performer. NOBODY ELSE CAN DO THIS!
this woman has brought joy to me nearly all my life. I don't know if she will ever read this, but my life has been so much richer for she having been a part of it. her folks would be {are} proud of this national treasure. LOVE YOU LIZA
I think this performance was at Statue of Liberty-----year for sure was 1986 and it truly doesn't get any better than this. You listen to this and you utter "Frank who?" I only wish she had quit smoking much earlier in her life (not that she has) cuz if you listen to her sing this song today, it will break your heart. It is hard for her to even get her breath. I would imagine she has oxygen backstage. A true legend!!!!!
The song requires and deserves the power and energy that Liza brings to it .... I get goosebumps every time I hear her sing it!. Sinatra never gave it that much energy. I do not understand how mayor Koch would have adopted his version as New York's unofficial anthem
Totally agree….only Liza can “belt” out this song like it is supposed to be sung. I too get chills everytime I need a high in my rather mundane life and cue up Liza bringing the house down in this incomparable performance of the song that was written especially for her!
Liza at her best, plain and simple. 1985 - 1989 was truly her zenith. She looked great and sang with a powerhouse voice that has not and never again will be equaled by anyone. She was simply the best.
It was a GREAT night. I was there singing in the Liberty Chorus. I met her that day. And Kenny Loggins and the Manhattan Transfer and Willie Nelson... The crowd was crazy excited before she started singing - you can hear them before the song started. By the time she was done, we were perfectly insane!! It was a national party. We partied very late into the night and stayed dancing on the Giant's turf until security kicked us off! If you have any more footage of that night I'd LOVE to see it!
This song was written for her to sing. The part in the movie New York, New York was written for her just like Caberet and Luck Lady. No surprise it is hers. There is no one like her left. She is the last great entertainer. If you have the chance to see her, please do. It doesn't matter what seat your in, you will feel as if she is performing just for you.
Liza was at the top of her game in this video back in the 80's. Her delivery on this gives me chills. It's a shame her voice seems to have gone now but she owns this song in this performance
Thank you , Thank you , thank you Liza!!!! Im unemployed, living a hell, but can not get tired of this video. She gives us strength, and hope, YOU ARE A WONDERFULL OF LIFE LIZA I m a professional singer, one day I'm goinna sing this, in this way. Thanks New York And Thanks liza Just for EXIST And Thanks Sam for Uploading this, simply you can not buy it with all the money in the world!!! From Argentina Hernan Muacksssss
wow, this is a more recent performance and she is better than ever, her voice is strong, toned,,,,, she must be working hard on being fit both physically and vocally ( vocal exercises daily), ... so glad to see Liza strong and not shakey like in some previous years. Love ya liza! one of a kind,,,, the best showmanship ever.
Am moving to NYC soon, leaving my comfortable life in TO. I love NYC of all places but I'm scared of failing in that big city. But after I saw Liza singing in this video, my level of hope and courage shoot up! I"ll make a brand new start of it in old New York .... thanks for posting this Hazelutnutcake!
It was written for her. She sang it in the movie. Frank made it popular. She came back and did this, the best ever performance of this song, by her or anyone else. Ever. Ever, I swear.
This is from the 1986 Centennial Celebration of the Statue of Liberty, right? That was a great show, as I remember. All the performers were great, but Liza's number was a showstopper.
no singer male or female has ever sang this song as good or with as much passion as liza has done on this performance. ever. frank fans eat your heart out.
This was Liza at her absoloute BEST. She has been thru so much with her knee replacements and highs and lows in her personal life. Her voice now seems to just be gone. She is still quite the character..
This performance is the best I have ever seen her do this number- which happened to be written for HER by Cander and Ebb- This is LIZA's song- eat your heart out Frank!!! F**king amazing-g*d what power she has in those pipes!!!!! Just fabulous!!1
Usually when people say "best version" it isn't. This is. Liza at her best. Yes, this 5' 4" woman can,not fill, but explode a stadium! Fantastic! Thank you for posting this/!
The crowd's reaction says it all. She brought nearly the whole 'house' of at least 25,000 people (at the Meadowlands in NJ) off their feet cheering her name 'Liza, Liza, Liza.' Her performance gives me goosebumps every time I see it. The definitive performance of the song; is meant to be theatrical, over-the-top, and dazzling which it is?
Here's the best of a singer who can belt it out. And still keep a tune--and be passionate. It doesn't get much better than Liza M. I loved her mom and her, equally as well. Thank Judy and Liza, Liza and Judy. You made my life just a bit more joyful when I truly needed it.

I just got so emotional. I absolutely love Liza Minnelli and this performance was full of so much passion that no one will ever be able to duplicate. Soooooo amazing. I've always had an emotional connection with this song and because of this performance, my love for Broadway has increased so much.
Absolutely FABULOUS!! I saw her in concert in Shreveport, Louisiana and it was an experience I'll NEVER forget! They sure don't make 'em like Liza anymore!
Stunning & soulful Liza really nails NYNY & clearly her anthem...legendary & easy to see why this DIVA has won every award possible and still going strong...Bravo LiZa!
I don't know how many times I've watched this video since I first found it, but it's become a BIG fav or mine! Liza really belts this song out, and just sucks the adrenaline from the crowd and throws it right back! Watching this I thought " She is her mother's daughter!" What a great performance! Talent like this just doesn't come around often, so I'm really glad we have the video proof! Great video!
Magnificent Minnelli sings with enough soul here to fill an entire CD...great to look at and that stunning voice is a marvel, nobody compares to this incredible level of singing and performing...Bravo Liza Minnelli!!!
Wouldn't you love to have a song written about YOUR city that has this much energy? And wouldn't you love to have Liza Minnelli sing it? WOW! Her performance is beyond explaination...and just listen to the audience...fueling her passion and her talent and her love for the song! WOW! Gotta listen to it again...and again...and again...
I had the great fortune to see Liza in "The Act." At the end of the performance, the audience was shrieking "I love you, Liza" and throwing all kinds of flowers -- and even themselves -- on stage. It was a memorable performance where an audience shows true love for the performer and she returns it!
As a longtime Sinatra fan I have only one thing to say....SPEC-FREAKING-TACULAR! Yes, she is a tad theatrical and yes, she is a bit eccentric but also yes, she is a TREMENDOUS talent. Thank you for this one Liza.
This was 1986 I believe, at the Meadowlands, the re-dedication of the Statue Of Liberty, over the July 4th weekend.......the best performance she ever gave!
I was oh new york !! in 1962 and all the dreams of m&m who in 1961 starred with 61 homers and 54 come to my thoughts !! I still love the big apple !! I remember the Paramount hotel, 42 street, the good old and faithful Yankee Stadium, the steaks with the garlic bread and potatoes !! Radio city music hall.. the subway, oh that central park with the squirrels !! God
This is LIZA'S SONG, OKAY. Frank's fine, but nobody does this song better than Liza. And always with such enthusiasm. Frank mouths the words, but Liza sings this from her heart. She truly does love NY. What a great performer!
Oh thank you so much for this post. I needed to see the Liza I have loved so long, really do her thing! I very unwisely watched a horrible Perez Hilton video showing Liza collapsing on Stage. My heart ripped for her, I am so sorry for the pain that she dulls by pills and liquor.(Like Else from Cabaret) But I needed to see this, so I thank you. I am glad Liza is all better now, and performing again, though not with the same strength, the heart shines through. She is a fighter!
Because they both were fierce. They were tremendous performers who were larger-than-life. They were glamorous and a little crazy. The perfect combination.
This girl needs no stage - only a voice in a million. It is a pleasure to listen and share.
