  • Liza singing one of her greatest songs in a segment I found enchanting from the movie 'New York, New York made in 1977 by Martin Scorsese, showcasing her amazing talent and fabulous singing voice. Liza has more talent than any singer alive today. I love you Liza May :)
I do not seek to breach copyright, I only wish to share this gem with the world. 'New York, New York' is the property of United Artists.

When she sings “sound” at 3:32 is one of the moments where she sounds eerily like Judy. I love this song and nobody could possibly sing it like Liza. She’s the greatest.

OMG You're so right! Liza is very different from Judy which is what makes being alive so exciting in this day and age! The similarities are obvious but the differences are profound. I love them both equally and have never compared them although Judy gives me a deeper emotional experience. She was the greatest vocalist and entertainer of her time.

When I saw "Cabaret " in '72, I fell in instant love and worship with Liza and "Maybe This Time" became my theme song of all time- until five years later when I saw her do this number in "New York, New York". I realized at once that this was her greatest number and ever since "But the World Goes 'Round" is my favorite of all.
When "Brokeback Mountain" lost the Oscar I was devastated but not as furious as I was in '78 when this song and "N.Y.,N.Y." were completely ignored by the Academy. Shame!

In her day, Judy may have been a technically better singer, but remarkably there's something they BOTH do that no one else does. As with Judy's Rock-a-by Your Baby, Liza is a master at the
slow build. By the end you're in sheer awe. And, as with Judy's The Man That Got Away, you know she's feeling every lyric, every phrase, and she knows you've been through that pain, heartbreak, and betrayal too. There are other singers who do amazing things, but none of them hit those sweet spots like Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.

Mr J. Dalton : Sir, you just stated Judy / Liza, perfectly. What I still cannot understand is just why both are/were, Gay icons???? ------------WolfSky9, 72 y/o

    • @johndalton3180
      @johndalton3180 4 года назад +5

@@Wolfsky9 There are a few answers to this, but first off, anyone can enjoy Judy and Liza. If a straight guy likes them, all is says about him is that he has very good taste. But, it's certainly true that gay men of a certain age have had a particular affinity for Judy and Liza. First off, look to The Wizard of Oz. Judy's most famous role. How many gay boys in the '50s when Oz first played on TV dreamed of leaving their dreary towns in suburbia, and going to Oz (the big city) filled with color, life, and old vaudevillians. The song Over the Rainbow reflects the longing of many gay men of the era to be able to live a happy life. Another factor is their personas and the kinds of songs they sang. Judy and Liza both had difficult lives. All kinds of problems. But, they survived, and at various points even triumphed. Gay men related to that struggle. Also, just their aesthetic. Gay guys loved old Hollywood glamour. Finally, they were made that way. Judy Garland's father was gay. Liza Minnelli's father way gay. Between them, Judy and Liza had nine husbands. At least five of them were gay. And that's giving the benefit of many doubts. But, again, really who cares? Anyone who likes talent can like Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.

    • @slowpainful

@@johndalton3180 I think you summed it really well. There's also something weirdly androgynous about female megastars, which makes me think of them sometimes as honorary drag queens! It's the over-the-topness, the drama, the emotionalism: all cliché gay qualities, but every stereotype has a grain of truth somewhere. Still there is something else going on I can't explain. The level of hysteria at her shows was not seen again until teenybopper girls caught wind of The Beatles. Was Judy a goddess, the audience her acolytes?

    • @stevers62
      @stevers62 3 года назад +6

Wolfsky9 A gay friend of mine summed it up for me (also gay) in a rather unflattering, albeit funny way. “Gay men like women who yell”. I seem to like so many gay icons that fit that category, I find it a little humorous that I can’t disagree.....at least for entertainers. I LOVE all the great belters with Judy and Liza at the top, but also Streisand, Merman, Bassey, Cher, etc. Female comedians, Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, Totie Fields. All powerful voices. As for actresses, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead, etc.......all loud, over the top. There is obviously more to it than just that, but there is certainly some truth to that slightly unflattering analysis. In fact, my love for Judy Garland is what outed me to my parents when I was 13.

@@johndalton3180 exactly and very well put plus gay men are not forced to accept their lack of heterosexual appeal. Both talents stick out and not seen as sex objects like Marilyn Ava Gardner, etc.Straight men sometimes don't care for Judy or Liza or Babs because they aren't gorgeous sex symbols. Sometimes you're happy, sometimes you're sad
    But the world goes 'round
Sometimes you lose every nickel you had
    But the world goes 'round
Sometimes your dreams get broken in pieces
But that doesn't alter a thing
Take it from me, there's still gonna be
    A summer, a winter, a fall and a spring
And sometimes a friend starts treating you bad
    But the world goes 'round
And sometimes your heart breaks with a deafening sound
    Somebody loses and somebody wins
And one day it's kicks, then it's kicks in the shins
But the planet spins, and the world goes 'round-
    But the world goes 'round
    But the world goes 'round
Sometimes your dreams get broken in pieces
But that doesn't matter at all
Take it from me, there's still gonna be

There's a moment herei the 3>33 mark where Minnelli all but false completely apart. Never at a loss for an emotional pace to hang her hat, and yet, more af an inner crumble. Her Gesture seems to suggest that she is looking to ignore, all movement of the outside world, by covering her ears. No sound, no trouble. And yet, because she is so inwardly open, because her spirit is so completely involved, one cannot imagine that for a second that Liza is not fully engulfed in the loss and the regret of losing her own true love. The person who said they's show up and never did. The one who promise they're be there and weren't. And of course the human who wrote about love and affection, but never really held it in high regard,
This is something Liza knows first hand. It would be easy to become mushy an sloppy, and Liza knows from the center of her that that they story is worth telling and so sh uses what's true for her, funnels it specifically rough those Gestures and allows it all to manifest itself under the imaginary circumstances of the scene And yet there isn't one false note. No a moment goes by where were aren't utterly enthralled and completely unnerved
Story telling and human refleetion at it's finest

I know it is unfair, as in my opinion, there is no one better than Judy. But Liza does a great job belting the songs out.

To Cathy Elle- What the hell are you talking about? It's obviously not about this amazing, fabulous talent voice of the greatest entertainer of our time! My g*d!! What power she has in those pipes- and FYI- she did this song for the movie in ONE take!! No one else can deliver like Liza!!!! G*d I love her!!!

I see Judy here... For me this IS Liza's song, just like for her mother it was The Man that got away in A Star is Born...

Singers are coached to not stick their hands in their pockets. Liza makes a statement, because she can.

I'm more of an Ebb and Kander fan than a Liza Minnelli fan
I love this song it's one of their best
"Sometimes your heart breaks with a deafening sound" is so intense
How courageous she was to agree to be filmed singing it in such a vulnerable setting but somehow it brought the best out in her and it's sheer magic
    The final note is incredible

Kander and Ebb wrote many of their best-known songs for Liza. For a reason. She did them well.

Liza was never beautiful she doesn't have the best sounding vibrato and can sound nasaly at times yet she has amazing presence a good technique and a gentle delivery in her singing and can give power and genuine feelings. I love her.
