One of the many times I went to see Shinedown, I took my dad with me. My dad's a pretty stoic man and he was his usual stone-faced self for most of the concert. My old man is a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan though and I knew the second they started playing this song he would get into it. Lo and behold, as soon as Shinedown began to play this song my dad got a huge smile on his face and put his cell phone flashlight on and waved it side-to-side like everyone else was doing. He proceeded to enjoy the hell out of the rest of the concert both after this song and retroactively before it. Since my dad was so stoic most of the time when I was growing up I rarely saw him genuinely smile. So having him smile because a band I love covered a song by a band he loves is a memory I will cherish forever.
That's an awesome story. I love it. It's always a memory to cherish when one or both of your parents can really get into music you like. Something you shared together. My Mother took me to my first concert when I was about 9 yrs old. Not a lot of people can say that they went to a concert with one of their parents. 💘 your story. Thanks for sharing!
As a 38 year old man. There's something about the emotions behind this song. This rendition in particular is amazing. I cry. Like not just a little wet eyes but cry every time. In a good way
I taught myself to play this song specifically for my mother, she lost me for a couple of years to drugs and the city and it broke her heart, all she ever wanted for me was to be happy and healthy, so once I got sober I dedicated this song to her, and to this day it brings her to tears when I play it for her. I love my mom. You only get one.
@@vikkibrown2023 as well as it can be, she'll be home from NC in a couple weeks, and my sobriety has paid off with a clean 10 months of peace. Thank you for the blessings.
fair play man, it's not easy I know first hand, much respect to you 🤝👏. your mother must be an amazing mother for her to be such a powerful inspiration for you, don't ever lose that feeling and keep paving your way forward in life to make her even more proud of you than she already is 👍✌️
@@logsburn955 thank you big dog, she is a very solid inspiration and reason to keep myself on track. She's a big reason I am the man I am today. If it wasn't for her I would have nobody to turn to. I'm glad I woke up when I did while she's still here to be proud of me. Thank y'all for the support and blessings. 🤙✌️
My baby boy sent me this song one morning. He’s trying to find himself he’s going through things but listening to this I think he is on the right path. Son I believe in you. You can do it by the grace of God. Do it for yourself
I havent seen my mother in more than 10 years. We have our differences, separated by oceans and years of no communication. This song has always seemed very personal to me, like a book on how to live. Listened to it today, and decided to sit down and write my mom a letter. Hopefully it reaches her. In todays crazy world, everyone needs to get back to the basics. Be a simple man.
God Bless You 🙏 I pray she reaches back in a positive way. I’m dancing to this song with my son at his wedding. If you see her again, dance with her to this song 😘♥️♥️♥️
I have been to hell and back several times with myself in my life. So when I hold by niece: I sing to her to be a simple kind of sweet niece. Something she loves and understands. I mean it from the bottom of my heart.
Call your f**king mother....put your pride away and reach the fuck out to her...just to say hey, or check in. You only get one mother and when shes gone you will hate yourself. Be a man and do the right thing...CALL YOUR FKING MOM!!!
This song helped me while I was getting sober and getting my family back. I listened everyday for months. I am now 2 years sober have my family a house a car an amazing woman and God.
My Daddy caught me putting in a concert in my room when I was 17 thinking no one was home. This was the song I was belting when he started listening. He started recording me in his old flip phone voice recorder. Of course I was mortified when I realized he’d been listening to me and was beyond embarrassed when I found out he recorded me. He said he’d heard their cover and liked it, but when he heard his daughter belting it out it ran a chill down his spine. He had a buddy that played guitar and they would make me sing this every time they caught me together. Daddy passed in 2019 and it broke my heart clear in two. He gave me an awesome taste in music (obviously 😂) and we had such a bond over it. He always told me he was proud of me but when he heard me sing, it was indescribable for him how proud he was. I didn’t do it much in front of people but would for him. My husband and kids tell me they like the way I sing, but I believe they’re humoring me lol. I’m not saying this to fish for compliments or too my own horn by any means as I feel more like I’m caterwauling these days 🤣🤣🤣. Every time I hear their cover of Simple Man I think about my Daddy and smile. That makes this song worth more than its weight in gold to me and will always hold a special place in my heart! 💕
Thank you for sharing your story! I am sorry for the loss of your Dad and pray that you find comfort in the sweet memories! I grew up on the original from LS (one of my Daddy's all time favorites). When Shinedown first released this, Daddy heard this version as a short ring tone on my Nokia cellphone (that's been a minute... lol) He asked me to let him hear the whole song of their version. He started crying and said that it felt like when he heard LS for the first time. He was super young when he lost his Mom at 21 (his Dad at 17), so that song was one of the only times I would see him tear up. Not long after Daddy heard this version, I lost him. He was 52 and I was 22. I will be 43 at the end of the month and no matter how many times I hear either version, it chokes me up. Every time I have heard them do this live ... water works! I know if he was still with us, he would be going to SD shows with me and my husband. Ahhh how I wished! 😁
Every time I listen to this, tears, tears of joy, languidness. I think, "pure soul". Grew up in Appalachia. Had the standard "hard knocks" Appalachian upbringing. I was born in FL, raised in VA, and live in WV currently. This is one of those songs which tells a story that many a young man lives. It really hits "all the feels" as is said in trendy pop culture. My grandfather and uncle were both army infantry. Both fought in wars that never ought to have been. Both came home and were Simple Men, working in a poultry hatchery for thirty to forty years each. Left huge shoes to fill my Pap, did. Uncle is still a Simple Man for now. He, too, will leave huge shoes. So, yeah this song "gets me" and as I think, is pure soul. I love Skynard's original but damn, Shinedown blew it the fuck away, in a very good way. :) :D
It’s different from the original, and yet just about as good as the original. It’s a copy that, at the same time, stands alone as if it were an original song..
@3:05 You'll see a little girl holding her grandfathers picture, That's Jasins daughter and Ronnie Van Zants granddaughter. I feel it's paying homage, instead of "remaking" .
Shinedown thank you for Speaking out for Mental Health awareness. This song goes out to my Son who died at 24 from Suicide. I wish he would have talked to me. But he never said a word about his struggle.😢
Sorry for your loss brother. This song resonates with me every time I hear it. I may not know much but I do know your son is looking down on you and you can still live the rest of your days with this message at hand. I too used to struggle with depression and attempted suicide multiple times. I know that sounds silly but when someone is at the end of their ropes they are battling with living or dieing. Once you make it through you realize how precious life really is. I can’t imagine your hurt but I CAN imagine your hope. Live for him brother and I promise you will see him again. God bless my dude. I’ll drink a beer in his honor.
I don't understand why this version gets hate. I heard someone comment once that Ronnie VanZant would be spinning in his grave if he he heard this version. I just don't get that. This version is an absolute tribute to the original. I think it's great and think it conveys the message and spirit of the original perfectly.
@Robert McGuire Ronnie's voice was PERFECT for the style of music he sang which was Southern Rock. I'd guess you aren't from the South tho by that comment...
I danced to this version by Shinedown with my only son on his wedding day. Needless to say, I cry happy tears every time I hear it. They are phenomenal. My son & daughter-in-law will celebrate their 10-year anniversary this month.
My son chose this song for the mother son dance at his wedding yesterday. It was a moment I will always cherish! Now I cry every time I hear it. Happy tears! Can’t wait to see them in the fall.
@@stacyebert4529 congratulations. My son and his wife went to see Shinedown in concert last Sunday…they had so much fun and said the band was fantastic!
Don't get me wrong I love Lynyrd Skynyrd but this remake by Shinedown actually brings a tear to my eyes because I can hear him putting his soul in it and it makes me feel the song even more. Dude sung the shit out of this song honestly lol
My father never danced a day in his life. Not even with my mother. I worried in secret what would happen on my wedding day when the father daughter dance was expected by the guest. My rock, my best friend, my life teacher showed up at my door one day and say "ok little girl here's the deal. I pick the song but you gotta teach me how to dance bc I don't know how." He was the stiffest, uncoordinated, and most beautiful dance I've ever had in all my life and I can't wait to dance with him again in the heavens! Love you dad❤
Awh! That made me cry like a baby! I am so glad that you have that perfect memory! I lost my Dad at 22, Mom at 25, met my Hubby at 27, and married at 28 (Hubby was 29). We just kind of skipped over the daughter parent stuff for me (all of my grandparents were gone before I was 12 and I'm an only child). I did highly encouraged Hubby and his Mom to have the mother son dance. He really was not wanting to because he felt it would be awkward since we weren't having bride father dances, but I highly encouraged him to. We lost his Mom the day after his 40th birthday, which was just over 4 years ago. He recently told me how torn he was about doing it because he didn't want it to feel like he was"show boating" on "the bride's day" since my parents wouldn't be there. He then teared up while telling me that he knew he married the right woman because not many could be that selfless on "a bride's day". He said that especially since now that we've lost his Mom (his grandma in 2018 and his brother last year) that it meant the world to him, even more than he thought it would. I was trying to make him smile and said , "I wasn't being selfless, I just saw how your dance moves were going and I thought we only needed one known embarrassing dancer in this family. It was just about preserving family cred." He started laughing so hard that he started crying and then he lost his breath. 🤣
I know how are you! I lost my wife, died in car accident last year. See? But, life must go on..Still great memories and pain here. I'm with you Crystal! 🙏😔💙🏴
@juwster every time I listen to this song I cry... she left behind two handsome boys that I raised for her. I know she is holding her youngest son he got ran over by a car a few years back.
Finally someone my age remembers Skynyrd. Wow what a cancel culture, all Republicans are Evil culture. Nancy is Lady Natas. Vodka Soaked House speaker..... Husband Flaming Homosexual!!!!
I never really had a father to give me any kind words or words to live by….it’s hard to be your own man sometimes. I need this song . Thank you Shinedown. Thank you, Lynyrd Skynyrd.
My son passed n simple man was our song u can't understand the emotions I have when I hear u sing it. FREAKING a life saver LITERALLY. Thank u so much. Come to Jersey so I can cry on your time. LOL
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your son. No parent should ever have to suffer through that kind of agony. Few people understand what you're going through. It's the most agonizing grief their is when a parent out lives their child. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Bless you and all who cared for him.
My mom passed away last year and she absolutely loved Shinedown. So glad she gave me her taste of music. I know she’s with me and guiding me thru getting over my drug addiction the last couple months. RIP Mom I love you.
Your mom sounds like an awesome lady with awesome taste in music. I’m glad she’s guiding you through man, you can do it. I’ve got 14 years sober - it’s hard but if I can do it, anyone can. Sending you love and strength from a stranger.
God Bless you Joe. I'm a mom and this version is my song to my son. I love Shinedown and he knows this song is from me to him. I'm sure this is your mom's song to you too. God bless.
My dad's very close cousin passed away on May 1, 2018. This was his favorite song, and because my dad was a singer, they asked him to sing it at his rosary. On May 4, my dad got up and sang through his grief. He sat down, fist bumped my aunt, and slumped over. My beautiful, wonderful dad had a heart attack and passed away in front of most of his family, including his own mom, aunt, my mom, and my sister. I was not there because I had strep throat, but I am thankful that my kids did not have to watch their grandpa die. You can actually look up Simple Man cover Alfred Contreras and see him sing. He had the heart attack within minutes of the performance, and was pronounced dead less than an hour later. This song absolutely devastates me, it will be 3 years next week and I can barely stand to listen to it.
Your dad was feeling pretty great when he was taken, but the grief and the extra emotion [anxiety, etc from performing] from the singing was too much for the heart... Honesty, I cannot think of a better way to go, surrounded by friends and family and just sang your heart out. I can understand how hard that would have been for those present, going thru that... He is just sleeping, and you will see him again make your dad proud do as he taught you and use your head and morals -GB
10 years ago my son was born. This song came on while she was in labor. Shinedown/Simple Man is one of his favorite songs. We always love listening to this song together.
You ain't kidding. I have a buddy who covered this song and to me he done pretty damn good. With a studio I think he'd be great! Please give him a listen, like and share. I think he has potential. Thanks in advance.. ruclips.net/video/onPLDV06rA0/видео.html
As a mother of four, only one son, I can’t imagine your pain. I hope that you can remember that children love their parents as much as we love them and would never want us to live a life of agony or regret as much as we wouldn’t want them to. Peace to you and your family.
@@nicholasmallory4084 Maybe a little Sound of Silence by Disturbed?David Draimen knocks a much loved duo with a platinum song from the ‘70’s - out of the park! Simon and Garfunkel gelled SO well… with all their classics, I never thought anybody would ever outdo them, but I was wrong. That’s OK… they still have a lot of beauties (especially) on their Greatest Hits album. Those two (very quickly) didn’t personally get along… so they parted ways. It was a musical tragedy. But, when they sang together… I don’t even have words. Now that I think about it, I actually have an example. They did a concert with thousands of people in the audience. It was just the two of them, a microphone stand, a stool and a guitar. The entire audience fell totally silent…but, when they were done, the audience went crazy with applause, whistles and such. The moment Paul Simon started playing his guitar for the next song… Then they again, fell silent. Certain bands or people… Their music will always be there after they are gone. But, when you hear your grandchildren listening to and singing songs that were popular/well known and one of *your* favorite bands (single artist or duo) when you were growing up? That’s when you know how good a certain band really was; when three generations later, their songs are still loved…Not just “still out there“. Unfortunately, I have never even heard of this band before. I happen to be watching a movie trailer and a song was playing in the background and I just HAD to know who they were. Well, I haven’t stopped listening since I found them. Cheers and God Bless! 9/20/24
When i was younger my grandma would hear me sing, so this was one of the songs she would play me, years later when i went to visit her she forgot who i was since she was sick, but when she started playing this i sang along with it and she hugged me, so when she passed i sang this for her and my grandpa came up to me gave me the biggest thank you with tears in his eyes for me remembering her song and promis and helping him through it

Lost my mom 😢on April 2nd. “Don’t forget that’s there’s a someone up above” I think my mom would wish for me to be a simple kind of woman. Love this and shine down absolutely kills it. 💯
Lyrics Mama told me, when I was young "Said sit beside me, my only son And listen closely, to what I say And if you do this, it will help you some sunny day" Oh yeah "Oh take your time, don't live too fast Troubles will come, and they will pass You'll find a woman, and you'll find love And don't forget that, there is someone up above" "And be a simple kind of man Hm be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can, if you can" "An' get your lust from the rich man's gold All that you need now, is in your soul And you can do this, oh baby, if you try All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied" "And be a simple kind of man Be something you love and understand Baby be a simple kind of man Won't you do this for me son, if you can, if you can" "Boy don't you worry, you'll find yourself Follow your heart, and nothing else And you can do this, oh baby, if you try All that I want from you my son, is to be satisfied" "And be a simple kind of man Be something you'll love and understand Baby be a simple, kind of man Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can" So baby, be a simple, be a simple man Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
My first son..after two girls..is being born this spring! I've dedicated this to him years before I even knew he would come to exsitance. I got You! 😊😉
I grew up listening to Skynyrd.I’m a musician myself and seeing younger generations appreciate good music makes my heart warm. Love this version. I’m sure Ronnie would approve. Helluva job guys. You did him proud.
Never found significance in this song until after my mom passed away. She loved this song and would always play it. Now, anytime I play it, I can't help but cry and miss her. Love your parents while they're here, because when they're gone is when you wake up from your dream and reality sets in.
"All that I want for you, my son Is to be satisfied" I hope you are well, I lost my mother recently and I know how heavy this is, even if we all follow with a strong skin. This song was on a random playlist and I ended up associating it with my mom.
@ I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Personally around that time for me, I was just in shock. It didn't really hit me until months later. Keep your head up and keep the good memories alive! You'll be able to soon again look at pictures and texts without crying and getting depressed too. Hang in there buddy
I haven't lost my mom... yet... but i hear this song and i know... one day it will happen and i am saddened.... but for now i live everyday with gratitude for the time i have with her... I Love You Mom... and to everyone qho has lost their family i am sorry for your losses....
This song was always dedicated to my Son, it was from about 4 years ago I guess. The first time I had found out my baby boy was using heroin. I can't tell you as a Mother how I possibly felt. Really knocked me to my knees. It was soul shattering. I prayed all day, everyday for over two years. And I prayed as hard as you could possibly pray for some one. This song made me cry but also gave me hope and strength. I find myself in the current time with tears rolling down my face. My son is using once again. The difference is I have newly been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and have to dig down so deep again and pray he makes it through this round. Like so many rounds before it . I am hoping and praying that things get better for all of us. The world's been a pretty hard, cold place lately. But I, and all of us out there have to remember... There is someone up above 🙏 to just be simple, and always value "the little things". They are so very important. Thank you from my heart Shinedown for yet MORE strength. I love you guys. And I love all of you. God bless us all. ✌ ✌ ✌ ✌ ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🎼🎸🎸🎤🎤🎶🎶
God Bless you and your son. I understand addiction and the relentless battle of the addicts mind. Those who have not felt the torment should not judge. I wish you the best one day at a time
Angela Sophia Lynch I am so sorry to hear about your son! I lost my sister and my sister’s daughter(my niece) to drugs. I hope your son will or has found his rock bottom and will or has made a decision to get clean. Prayers for you and your family during this hard times!
Angela Sophia Lynch Feeling for you...Heroin should be legalised it not a bad drug l know many professionals that are productive on Heroin!! sounds crazy right??......the problem is getting it and good stuff if it was legal people like your son and many others could function and be productive it would save many lives and allow dependents to work enjoy and live life as normal Sending you strength beautiful lady.
When I first started learning guitar, my big bro told me to learn this version specifically as my first song. So I did, it was the first song that I actually sat down and really tried to hammer out. Whenever he'd come over to mom and dad's house, I'd show him the progress I'd made on the song. Eventually I had the song down perfectly, and he thought the fact that his little bro learned one of his favorite songs on guitar was so damn cool. The date today is September 30th, 2024. On September 27th, 2024, my big bro crashed his motorcycle and passed on at the age of 31. I miss him dearly. We hadn't gotten to talk as much recently, and I haven't played guitar in years. I would give anything to be able to play this song for him again. I miss you Dave. Rest easy big brother.
I lost my Mother when I was 5. It was just her and I, against the world. She lost her battle, unfortunately . A long, hard, Hellish battle I wish on no one, even the devil himself . I always envisioned this would bet her message to me from the other side...
I lost my mom in 2016 I was her only kid now I'm 55 yrs old the song was special to me before she past but now it really hit home with me. I told my kids I want this so song play when the day I go meet my mom
I will always cry to this song, This was my father’s favorite song, he passed away from stage 4 cancer when I was 9. I always can feel his spirit with me when this song, as if he is singing this to me, to help me be a simple man, just like him.
I’ve dedicated the original version of this song to my three Sons when they were teenagers. This morning one of my sons (37 yrs. Old) sent me this version. Gave me chills. This man just gave this song the best version that it could possibly be. Amazing.
This.. is by far, one of my absolute favorite covers. I give respect to the original, for this wouldn’t exist without it, but firmly believe that this rendition is immaculate. A masterpiece of a cover.
Phil Medarac I absolutely agree.. my song to my son.. because a all these things are what I as a mother want for him. He just left for basic training. The distance hurts but I couldn’t be prouder of the young man he has become and will become.. this song holds a very special place in my heart!
I totally agree with you, Phil. I just listened to this version, followed by the original, and I got the impression that this song highlights the very best of what makes each one an artist. Skynard has a good voice, but it is the guitar instrumental parts where he really shines, and it is clearly evident in the long(er) breaks between the verses, the way he clips the end of each vocal line succinctly, that sort of thing. It feels like the words are merely there to break up the guitar solos. Brent Smith, on the other hand, has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard, and he absolutely kills it on this song. The octave jumps, holding out the notes at the end of each phrase and lyrically merging them into the next one... it's enough to give you chills. In a good way, of course. Shinedown's rendition of Simple Man is all about his voice, and emphasizing the words of the song, with the music there to back him up, which is different from how Skynard's feels, where the lyrics are sort of backing up the music. All in all, they are both wonderful songs and worthy of being remembered and praised for their own merits, rather than pitting one against the other, saying X version is better than Y version.
I feel the same way about this song and Cradle of Filth's cover of Iron Maiden's Hallowed be thy Name. If you're into heavier music like that. So glad the original exists, but what they accomplished with the covers is brilliant.
Truly the best cover song ever with a legendary set of pipes like only a select few. That said original music creation is the true greatness that can only be imitated there after. Even if a once in a generation voice blows the vocals into the heavens of greatness by making the song his own while respecting the original's soul, it's still copying another artist's lyrical & musical compostition which is the true greatness of any song. But some like Hendrix' cover of Dylan's All Along the Watchtower is a rare example of the cover artist recreating the original to a different version not true to the original, yet so great that the cover artist is recognized as the creating artist. Shinedown did a dedication at Ronnie's niece's request which he put his own stylistic changes to, while remaining true to the root of the song. Greatest cover ever, but not better as the creation is the craft, not the incredible cover.
I haven’t heard anyone mention this yet, but Jasin Todd, the guitarist for Shinedown, is married to Melody VanZant, the daughter of Ronnie. Shinedown is also from Jacksonville, where Skynyrd is from. Shinedown pretty much had direct permission from the VanZants to do this song, lol.
Karl Nodland I live a few blocks away from Ronnie’s widow and Ronnie’s daughter. You wouldn’t know they were VanZants because of how humble and cool they are, except for all the awesome memorabilia scattered around the house.
De Patterson--I thought I was the only one who ever described a song as being 'Hauntingly beautiful'. I am glad to see you use that phrase as well. The first song I ever referred to as Hauntingly Beautiful was Since i've Been loving You--led zeppelin..They were the first words that came to mind.. You are so very right about this one!
This song is genuinely incredible. I lost my father this past September and my son is in his second year of college in Iowa. The two closest men in my life are away, one forever, the other who knows how long. Songs like this make a man cry. I hope that some day my son understands the love and sacrifices that simple men made for him. Thank you Dad....Godspeed!
How am I 36 years old and never heard this before. One of the best feelings for me is finding "new" music and wow this is an instant favorite. I got goosebumps!
How about disturbed, sound of silence? There's so many amazing songs from the past that are made into great covers. I dare say, some better than three original almost. And jelly roll. Save me. These songs saved me
The kind of medicine that has everyone overdosing, LoL. Check my Friend out ruclips.net/video/onPLDV06rA0/видео.html he covered this song and pretty good too. Give him a like and share the video. Let's give him a shot😉
Shinedown has given me strength that I didn’t even know I had. Their music and their messages reach down deep into my soul. I love you all. Thank you so much for giving us all your artistic viewpoints.
I've listened to Shinedown on and off since I was in high school, and I never listened to this song before until now. This gave me the chills because Brent's voice is so powerful. You can actually hear the emotion in his voice and I really love it. This was definitely an awesome cover.
If you want to see a real in close person take on this song take a look at the video "Shinedown in My house" It's just the guitarist and Brent in a living room with some people around drinking beer, insane. ruclips.net/video/Q_yBTIkwXoA/видео.htmlsi=ILKnGfaTqkY5EcoG
That's just one of that songs that instantly makes me cry, it's simply beautiful. English is not even my mother tongue, and this still hits like a truck. Never been really into none of the bands (not really famous in my country), this still is one of the most beautiful things i've ever listened to, definitely one of the best covers of all time
My names Annamaria Rousch. I'm the one who wrote this song. I'm glad you love it. ❤ I had a tumor all my life. I'm getting my memory back. Learning more songs I wrote. I'm going to do a duet with him. Loves you
I love this song. My son is getting married on 9/16 and this is the song we are using for the mother son dance. Thank you for sharing your bright light in the world. My daughter and I are coming to the KC show tonight sooo excited 😊❤️

Every Single Year I send this song to my son on his birthday; before he grew up, I played it for him when he was young and lived at home. I meant it (around) 50 years ago, I mean it now. I have always told him, 'just be a good person, I don't care what you do for a living as long as it is legal and honest work, just be compassionate and kind'. And Every Single Year I play this and cry tears of joy, and thank God that my son DID turn out to truly be a good man who loves with all his heart and is so kind to others and works hard for a living. This song will never grow old, not as long as there are mommas out there who love there sons and only want good for them.
The acoustic guitar compliments Brent Smith's powerful vocals perfectly. I first heard this song late at night while driving a lonely stretch of highway and it gave me chills, it was so perfect.
RIP Russel Ayotte ,dear friend this song reminds me of you brother. It just seems like I know the life and feel what you went through all thoughs years
when I was a kid growing up without my mother around, when I did see her, she taught me to be this way without actually saying these words. just though her spirit and making trees from seeds. god I wish my father didn't ban her from me and make me resent him my whole life. being smart and over observing can really hurt u in the real world. don't u worry, ul find urself, follow ur heart, and nothing else.
Heard this song on the radio the moment i started my car to leave my ultrasound appt. Literally seconds after finding out I was having my one and only boy. Yeah..... Cried all the way home.
If there ever was a cover that gave tribute to the original it would be this one, and if there ever was a band to give simple man the soul it deserves it would be shinedown.
This was me and my sons song when he was growing up(original version of course). He's now 21, in rehab and long history of mental health issues. This song brings me peace and helps me get through the rough days. I have faith that one day I'll have my son back. He'll sit on the couch with his guitar and I'll hear him sing this to me again.
Man I feel for you. Don't know what to say, but had to tell you I'm here for you.... I'm a father of 8.... Don't kniw what I'd do in that situation..... If you ever need or want to talk , to destress, hit me up.... My mail is fire man Jim 2 at g...... Gonna delete this in 24 hours.... Hope you get it ... God only gives us what we can handle. Your son will come home to you again, as he was.... I'll keep y'all in my prayers.....
He is doing alot better. He is still in rehab but is holding a job and on his medication. He'll probably be there until the summer then move to a sober living house after that. Thanks for asking, I really appreciate that!
I knew you guys for Sound of Madness which is, hands down, one of the best ****ing rock albums out there. Stumbling into this by coincidence is nothing less than an epiphany. Goddamn.
Just lost my mother a few months ago. Don’t typically frequent this type of music, but find myself failing deeper into it recently. Just feels different in ways I can’t explain. Oddly enough, I feel mother more in this song than any other song I’ve listened to
i lost my mother too, 7 months ago and every time i think about her i remember this song, and every single thing i learned from her was to make me a simple man. R.I.P. your mom and mine and hopefully we can see them again.
I am truly sorry for your loss brother. Keep your head up, she is looking down on you right now proud as can be. 💯💪🏼 Another song I recommend that you would like is Chris Cornell’s Cover for Nothing Compares 2 U. Beautiful song.

This will forever be the words I will pass on to my Son. I had the opportunity to dance with him to this at a special event.. it's forever our song. What an amazing remix.
I remember the night I dedicated and sang this to you while we danced under the stars. I remember singing it to you when you were sad everytime after, I remember how happy it made you to hear me sing this to you. God I miss you so much, I just want to be back there again, I want to start things over again. But, I would give up any chances of that, just to dance with you and sing this to you one last time. ~to the man who became my soulmate

Damn, that's a wholesome story man, thanks for sharing :)
I know what you mean I took my Dad to one of my kiss concerts when still in makeup he was a real trooper to I miss you Daddy
Awesome bro
That's an awesome story. I love it. It's always a memory to cherish when one or both of your parents can really get into music you like. Something you shared together. My Mother took me to my first concert when I was about 9 yrs old. Not a lot of people can say that they went to a concert with one of their parents. 💘 your story. Thanks for sharing!
awesome !!!
As a 38 year old man. There's something about the emotions behind this song. This rendition in particular is amazing. I cry. Like not just a little wet eyes but cry every time. In a good way
You're not alone.. something happened this year that makes this song hit me different.
I can agree
Real men cry brother
This song floored me just the same
Makes me think of my dad. song makes me choke up every time
I taught myself to play this song specifically for my mother, she lost me for a couple of years to drugs and the city and it broke her heart, all she ever wanted for me was to be happy and healthy, so once I got sober I dedicated this song to her, and to this day it brings her to tears when I play it for her. I love my mom. You only get one.
Hope everything turns out well for ya'll~~God Bless~~

My baby boy sent me this song one morning. He’s trying to find himself he’s going through things but listening to this I think he is on the right path. Son I believe in you. You can do it by the grace of God. Do it for yourself
I've got one in that stage. Haven't heard from him in 2.5 years 😢

Dude, that is the power of his voice, and he just dominates that song! I felt my stage father Benjamin King talking to me like he is singing
I broke my back... spinal.
the best voice i've heared in years 👌👌👌👌
I havent seen my mother in more than 10 years.
So when I hold by niece:
I sing to her to be a simple kind of sweet niece. Something she loves and understands.
I mean it from the bottom of my heart.
I hope you and your mom got closer. Life is too short. Let's live, let's love.
Call your f**king mother....put your pride away and reach the fuck out to her...just to say hey, or check in. You only get one mother and when shes gone you will hate yourself. Be a man and do the right thing...CALL YOUR FKING MOM!!!

Obviously your Daddy loved you very much!
That’s an awesome memory! May your daddy rest in peace 💜🙏💫
All
What an incredible tear-jerker of a story. Good on your dad for sneaking in and recording you. Priceless memories!! ❤
I lost my husband on july 30th. My grandson, age 17, played his guitar to this song to honor his grandgather. A moment I will never forget.
I love the guitar to ml
Cherish that memory forever!!!❤❤❤
Awesome. Touched
Not a fan when newer bands try to remake a classic. But shinedown is an exception. Absolutely killed it! Such a talent!
There's a handful of songs out there that I feel no longer "belong" to the original artist
Amen
It’s different from the original, and yet just about as good as the original. It’s a copy that, at the same time, stands alone as if it were an original song..

@3:05 You'll see a little girl holding her grandfathers picture, That's Jasins daughter and Ronnie Van Zants granddaughter. I feel it's paying homage, instead of "remaking" .
Shinedown thank you for Speaking out for Mental Health awareness. This song goes out to my Son who died at 24 from Suicide. I wish he would have talked to me. But he never said a word about his struggle.😢
God bless him sir. So sorry for you're loss.
Sorry for your loss.😢
Sorry for your loss brother. This song resonates with me every time I hear it. I may not know much but I do know your son is looking down on you and you can still live the rest of your days with this message at hand. I too used to struggle with depression and attempted suicide multiple times. I know that sounds silly but when someone is at the end of their ropes they are battling with living or dieing. Once you make it through you realize how precious life really is. I can’t imagine your hurt but I CAN imagine your hope. Live for him brother and I promise you will see him again. God bless my dude. I’ll drink a beer in his honor.
I'm sorry Alice for your loss.😢 I can't imagine the pain. I pray you find peace someday 🕊️💜🕊️

I don't understand why this version gets hate. I heard someone comment once that Ronnie VanZant would be spinning in his grave if he he heard this version. I just don't get that. This version is an absolute tribute to the original. I think it's great and think it conveys the message and spirit of the original perfectly.
Both are great.

So damn beautiful.. Gives me goosebumps all over
My dad's very close cousin passed away on May 1, 2018.

Maybe a little Sound of Silence by Disturbed?David Draimen knocks a much loved duo with a platinum song from the ‘70’s - out of the park!

When i was younger my grandma would hear me sing, so this was one of the songs she would play me, years later when i went to visit her she forgot who i was since she was sick, but when she started playing this i sang along with it and she hugged me, so when she passed i sang this for her and my grandpa came up to me gave me the biggest thank you with tears in his eyes for me remembering her song and promis and helping him through it
God bless you
My grandma got dementia and never remember her only grandchild ever again, for 6 years as she died slowly. I'm happy for you.

Lost my mom 😢on April 2nd. “Don’t forget that’s there’s a someone up above” I think my mom would wish for me to be a simple kind of woman. Love this and shine down absolutely kills it. 💯
I lost my father Friday it hurts so bad.
Wishing you peace and love ❤️🔥
@jamesmcdonald9415 Wishing you peace my friend 🙏
Sorry for your loss, I hope you may power through and continue knowing that she will always be with you 🙏🏻
Make your mom proud, she's got a whole crew up there to brag to.
Shinedown made this song brilliant and breathtaking❤. Favorite version of all times.
Brent's voice is a magic on its own.
Don't see anyone commenting about the little girl holding the portrait of Ronnie Van Zant. Awesome tribute.
The little girl is Ronnie's granddaughter.
Never noticed it. Thanks. Awesome!!

Lyrics
Mama told me, when I was young
"Said sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely, to what I say
And if you do this, it will help you some sunny day" Oh yeah
"Oh take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come, and they will pass
You'll find a woman, and you'll find love
And don't forget that, there is someone up above"
"And be a simple kind of man
Hm be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can, if you can"
"An' get your lust from the rich man's gold
All that you need now, is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Won't you do this for me son, if you can, if you can"
"Boy don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart, and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want from you my son, is to be satisfied"
"And be a simple kind of man
Be something you'll love and understand
Baby be a simple, kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me son, if you can"
So baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh won't you do this for me son if you can
Thanks bro!
I wish more people would live by the lyrics of this song, we'd all be better off.
techguy I agree
So true
My first son..after two girls..is being born this spring! I've dedicated this to him years before I even knew he would come to exsitance. I got You! 😊😉
This is a tough song for me for reasons but yeah
Word
Best cover of this song hands down
This song is curing my depression each and every time i listen to it. I love it
I grew up listening to Skynyrd.I’m a musician myself and seeing younger generations appreciate good music makes my heart warm.
"All that I want for you, my son
Is to be satisfied"
I hope you are well, I lost my mother recently and I know how heavy this is, even if we all follow with a strong skin.
This song was on a random playlist and I ended up associating it with my mom.
With you on this man. Lost my dad 2 weeks ago.
@ I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. Personally around that time for me, I was just in shock. It didn't really hit me until months later. Keep your head up and keep the good memories alive! You'll be able to soon again look at pictures and texts without crying and getting depressed too. Hang in there buddy
I lost my mom 7 years ago, and I still can't listen to this song without tearing up.

As this song is, I am simply sending you and yours hope and prayers!

Feeling for you...Heroin should be legalised it not a bad drug l know many professionals that are productive on Heroin!! sounds crazy right??......the problem is getting it and good stuff if it was legal people like your son and many others could function and be productive it would save many lives and allow dependents to work enjoy and live life as normal
Sending you strength beautiful lady.
I am so sorry. May God be with you always

I'm sorry for your loss and I'm sure your father is very proud of you
I'm so sorry!!🤗
He'll always be with you brother!! 🙏
Thinks of the good times 😭
DAMN!! That is the most f@#$%ing phenominal vocals of this song that I've ever heard! Way to pay tribute to Ronny VanZant!!!
Never knew that. Thanks for your share. I love this version
Karl Nodland I live a few blocks away from Ronnie’s widow and Ronnie’s daughter. You wouldn’t know they were VanZants because of how humble and cool they are, except for all the awesome memorabilia scattered around the house.
Thats so cool
little Melody tagged along . those were the best days now there gone . Brickyard road is great !
Isn't the guitarist rocking van zantz hat?
He wretches every note from his soul. Hauntingly beautiful.
I like the lyrics.

Ronnie Van Zant was a prolific lyricist.
Well said
De Patterson--I thought I was the only one who ever described a song as being 'Hauntingly beautiful'. I am glad to see you use that phrase as well. The first song I ever referred to as Hauntingly Beautiful was Since i've Been loving You--led zeppelin..They were the first words that came to mind.. You are so very right about this one!
This is my favorite version
I got goosebumps ❤absolutely beautiful ❤
This song is genuinely incredible. I lost my father this past September and my son is in his second year of college in Iowa. The two closest men in my life are away, one forever, the other who knows how long. Songs like this make a man cry. I hope that some day my son understands the love and sacrifices that simple men made for him. Thank you Dad....Godspeed!
❤❤❤❤❤
How am I 36 years old and never heard this before.
One of the best feelings for me is finding "new" music and wow this is an instant favorite.
I got goosebumps!
this one touches the feels for real. amazing cover
Brent Smith.
You been missing out this is a remake of an older rock song
How about disturbed, sound of silence? There's so many amazing songs from the past that are made into great covers. I dare say, some better than three original almost.
And jelly roll. Save me.
These songs saved me

I've listened to Shinedown on and off since I was in high school, and I never listened to this song before until now. This gave me the chills because Brent's voice is so powerful. You can actually hear the emotion in his voice and I really love it.
This was definitely an awesome cover.
If you want to see a real in close person take on this song take a look at the video "Shinedown in My house"
It's just the guitarist and Brent in a living room with some people around drinking beer, insane.

That's just one of that songs that instantly makes me cry, it's simply beautiful. English is not even my mother tongue, and this still hits like a truck. Never been really into none of the bands (not really famous in my country), this still is one of the most beautiful things i've ever listened to, definitely one of the best covers of all time

My mother and I danced to this song in my wedding. When she heard it for the first time at my wedding she cried.

This made me emotional... I hope he comes home soon. If I have a son one day, I will play this for him, too. Sending love, xo.
How is your son? I've been thinking about y'all and praying.... Hope all is well....
He is doing alot better. He is still in rehab but is holding a job and on his medication. He'll probably be there until the summer then move to a sober living house after that. Thanks for asking, I really appreciate that!
I have mental issues to and a recovering addict from pain pills...I love this song it brings me peace
