I'm 64 and remember when Simon & Garfunkel sang this... but I believe this particular song should absolutely be sung like this. The words and his brilliant voice are so very profound.
Absolutely. Even Paul Simon said this is their song now. He sent David a private message the night of the Conan performance saying how much he loved it.
David was sick during this performance. He's that much of a beast. And honestly I love seeing these heavy metal rockers be so gentle and intentional with their instruments. It's mesmerising!
And what people also don't know is the producers of the Conan show in post production auto tuned it unbeknownst too David because he was sick and they didn't think he would sound right he was pissed and refuses to perform on Conan anymore because of it
I'm 64....David Draiman/Disturbed Absolutely as artists..powerhouse in their musical/vocal ability. This is my nightly Lullaby before bed since I first heard and was aware of David. I have since researched their history, interviews, etc...One word, Moving...describes them. I have not as of yet found anything I do not like. I enjoy them ALL. He is a very intelligent, soft spoken, articulate gentleman. And as you pointed out..very much aware of all issues facing humankind and uses their voice to bring it to your attention. MASTERFUL.
I find terrifying relevance in the political atmosphere. As somebody who is constantly consuming politics, the fact that there are people saying things without meaning, worshiping their "neon god", and refusing to hear anyone speaking differently because they're caught up in their way of thought, and that this "silence like a cancer grows", is really troubling. We can witness it all happening. DD is truly a master and brings an awe inspiring skill to this amazing song.
He’s amazing. And every professional voice coach says he’s pretty amazing. He has a voice and control that many professionals wish they had. The best singer around hands down.
AND 💥 BOOM 💥 David Draiman everybody 👏👏👏 Seen him over 30xs over 20yrs first time was underground in Philly with my 15son who introduced me to him and HIS VOICE NEVER FALTERS LIVE, STUDIO VERSION doesn't matter his voice is always on... I'd of lived to see him as a Cantor
I first heard this cover (the studio version) while visiting my son in 2016. He sat me down and told me he had something he wanted me to hear. I was absolutely stunned, covered in goosebumps and crying by the time it was over. I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel and many of their contemporaries, and raised my sons on that same music. We still share music back and forth. I have to say here, though, this cover is the best version of this piece. David Draiman brings home the fact that the first time was a warning, and the rage at the fact that people did not heed that warning. I was blessed to get to see Disturbed in Grand Rapids, Michigan during their Evolution tour, and this song featured prominently. These guys are awesome in every way.
Wow, lucky you to have seen them! I loved that your son wanted you to hear them sing The Sounds of Silence. I too got chills and could have cried when I heard this for the first time. Coming back to listen again, those chills returned. They are something else and Mr. David is about the best singer I've ever heard. Thanks for your great comment!
Disturbed’s version of Sound of Silence opened the true meaning of what was the lyrics were conveying. I’m not one to understand lyrics very well, but this rendition spoke it.
I want to cry and punch things… 🤣 best description of how this song made me feel. It was awesome to see a Disturbed fan who knows this vocalist from his usual style. This performance only drives home the fact that music has the ability to touch people in ways no one ever thought possible and connect them to others. In this insane uncertain time we are living in I really needed that reminder. Cry and punch things. RIGHT ON. Yes. 🤘🏼👊🏼♥️
Thank you for this great reaction, David is one of those wonderful hidden gems, most people give no credit to rockers, but there are amazingly talented singers in the rock genre.
Disturbs rendition of “the sound of silence” is my all time favourite song. I sing it every time I went to karaoke and when I rock out in my car full volume. Always gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes 😢
I love how well David brings out the meaning of the song with his fierce singing of "the people bowed and prayed to the neon gods they made." And "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls." I saw the studio version first when my son sent it to me. I was absolutely blown away by that version!
David Draiman...a voice to die for! Yes!! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ....one octave to another! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction Dad!
I too am jealous that I wasn't there to see Disturbed singing this live on Conan. However, I'm 73 and my concert days are behind me. First concert was in 1969 and it was Canned Heat. Hey you youngsters, ever hear of them? Enjoyed your comments. You are right, his vocals and control are amazing. This song and the front man Mr. David and Disturbed are way over the top for me. I'm a true fan.
I'm not really a youngster any more. 68 here and yes I remember canned heat.my first concert was Loggins and Messina. They were 2nd bill and just blew it out of the park. So much so that I honestly can't remember who th first bill was. I was 15 at the time. I would truly give my right arm to see these guys live.
@@LeeAnn-l3s Well, I'm 76 now and have come back to listen again and give you a bit of a comment. I would have loved to have seen Loggins & Messina. I sure believe that it was one heck of a concert. I remember seeing Bob Seager when he was the first one out for Steppen Wolfe, I believe. I sure am thankful that I saw so many great concerts back in my day. Saw Pink Floyd, Grand Funk Railroad, CCR, and so many others that won't come to mind right now. I can't believe how good Disturbed is. Mr. David is so amazing, and I could listen to him sing the phone book. He'd show it justice. Ha! Thank you so much for your comment!!!!!
This is the best cover I've heard! I have listened to these reactions and every time I get chills. To me the Original Video tells the story visually and the live version lets the instruments tell the story. The building of revealing the instruments the lighting just beautiful. And of course both highlight David's amazing vocals!. He was mad because any song he sings wants it to sound the same live or recorded with no auto tune. And the producers didn't think when he hit the high notes it would sound good because he was sick and they auto tuned him. So that he was not happy about. But dang he still sounded amazing!!
I watched this video about a year ago. I had never heard of Disturbed. I NEVER liked heavy metal. Then David came along and changed everything. I LOVE them now. I’m mean I’m listening to..Stronger On Your Own, Stupify, Stricken, Prayer, and of course Down With the Sickness. Thanks a lot David for opening my eyes to a whole new genre.
I read a review somewhere that this person was in the audience. They said it was deafening in there after his performance for approximately 5 minutes. David Draiman's voice is like a fine wine; smooth & addictive. I have been a fan since they came out. Never heard a more thorough vocal range perfected as well as his. 🙌
I am an 80 yr. old grandma.... and a big fan of Disturbed and especially David. His live performance touched me more than any other singer ever has. It brings tears to my eyes .... moves me so much, everytime I hear it.. That is saying a lot. I have seen and heard many very talented people. But he, blew me away... in a way no one else has. You have good taste young man. Oh, the video was Great... but for some reason I like the live performance better... but just a little 😁
Well, I'm 76, and also a big fan! You, like me, have probably seen and heard a lot of good singing throughout your life and are able to honestly say that they are so amazing. Mr. David is just unbelievable, and I sure can't think of anyone any better. I truly think he is at the top. Thanks for your comment.
Can you imagine going to Conan and THIS is the performance?!?!?! Nobody went home unaffected. I love the studio version as well because of the visuals. Tells the story as much as his amazing voice. Ambit honestly? I thought he sounded better live. This is by far my all time favorite version of the song. Paul Simon even told him that that is how the song is meant to be performed and he put a link to Davids version on his social media pages.
I have watched so many reaction videos for this song and you have the best reaction to my favorite part of the song! I cannot listen to this song enough. It is more than amazing
Whatever version gives me chills every time. Such an amazing voice. Great review. I think your kids may be lucky…an aware dad is on their side and headed in the right direction ☺️
You get it!! I’ve seen dozens of reactions vids to this. No one really knows Disturbed or anything about DD. If you compare the original by S&G to this version. The original message was a kind peaceful warning about how Television was starting to play a “Bad roll” in our lives. And Disturbed sang it with the anger of how television and social media has taken over our lives. I compare the 2 as if it’s a pizza, S&G made a good pizza and delivered it with the toppings all jacked up. But Disturbed delivered that pizza on a golden tray with the lights of Heaven shining down on it.
This version has been my favorite song for years. My mom and I used to listen together when she was still alive. It has SO much meaning for me. David is AMAZING!! ❤
You could not have chosen a better music video to react to. Absolute disturbed fan here and this performance gives me chills every time. Have you ever seen "man of constant sorrow" by Home Free? Acapella country
I am going to see Disturbed in April 2025, during their North American tour. I saw them back in the 2000’s after The Sickness was released. I think David has gotten better as he’s aged. As he’s 51, who knows how many more tours they’ll do.
I loved watching ur reaction 😂❤😊 I’ve watched a million reactions to this song only, & ur falling back in ur chair was perfection!!! Ur appreciation of the music & sound of David’s voice & the band was spot on!!!❤❤❤❤
I love your words about being the master of your craft. Having worked as a Physical Therapist for 40+ years I know what it is like to be ignored in the ER and yet I love it. Thank you. This song rings true for ALL OF MY PATIENTS
I've watched this reaction dozens of times and it's still my favorite of yours. The shear joy in your face just watching this and enjoying it for what it is brings a smile to my face. Keep up the awesome content.
I've easily watched over a hundred reaction videos to this song, and yours is definitely one of the best. Love the analogy you made about the Neon God and how you literally have to get kids to go outside to be punished these days. Wow, so true!! SO sad, but true lol. It's almost like Paul Simon knew exactly where we would end up at this point in time. One of the most well-written songs in history, without a doubt, and it took David Draiman and Disturbed to really deliver the real power of the words in the most appropriate time in history for it.
I love this song so much. This and "way I pray" are my favorite Disturbed songs. So good. All the chills and feels every time I hear them. Saw him in concert for my 18th bday back in the day, stood like five feet from the stage and oh it was incredible. Totally down with the sickness. Have you heard bad Wolves cover Zombie? Another one done true justice. She died like a day or so before she was supposed to come record it with them.
When I saw them live, as with this performance David Draiman was sick. He announced that fact and said he would try to not let that affect his performance. He certainly didn't move around very much but his vocals were perfect and sounded exactly like their recordings. Such a voice and such a talent.
I tear up every time i listen to this song... seeing your reaction to it makes me feel so proud that other people react to it the same way as i do... Looove it
David Draiman is a master. Love his cover of this song so much. The video is fantastic, but the Conan performance has that live presence that adds so much. Can't choose one over the other.
The producers of the Conan show put in Auto-Tune and David was not impressed he said that he was furious when he found out it was in there and the man was sick and he nailed this song
I turn this on after fires we make with victims. Which is rare. But this song goes so tough that it is literally the only song that touches you on levels u forgot about
I'm glad you reacted to both. The live performance is great but the studio version hits me harder. And the video helps you understand the song itself is about the death of music. The song was written to decry school music programs being defunded in the 60's.
I watched the video probably 10 times before I could pay attention to the story in the video itself. I was so captivated by his voice. I am not a heavy metal fan, but this man is so talented! Beautiful voice.
I made it to this reaction from your HomeFree reactions :-) you've now hit the two primary playlists I have for crappy days at work - Homefree and Disturbed/Device -- I've now subscribed :-)
Great cover reaction. To me Simon and Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎
Just imagine, your being dragged to Temple by your parents and this man is your Cantor. Temple just got way cool. Lol His voice is just so powerful and moving. There's nothing about this I don't like. Perfection
That rasp you talk about is called "Vocal Fry". Done wrong it can shred your vocal chords over time, and shorten your career. David Draiman does it right. He'll have a long career, and he'll be able to do that as long as he wants.
Hi. New subscriber....thank you for this song, it's one of my favorites. I am 64 and it was one of the first songs I learned all of the words to :) It was also through this version that I discovered Disturbed and I am so jealous that you've seen them so many times. I would love to see them live, but so many things have changed and this avid, but unjabbed concert goer will no longer be welcome....so perhaps in my next life. It is amazing how this song has only become MORE relevant over the years. For all the good tech has done, the bad is a necessary evil I suppose. I can only imagine what my grandchildren's lives will be like. I haven't looked through your videos yet, but would suggest 'Iron Sky' by Paolo Nutini....powerful raspy amazing vocalist, relevant message. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy.
To me, the original version was just a warning of what will happen if people don’t change. And this version is the consequence of not changing for the better. People now days don’t communicate with others face to face anymore. They’d rather text someone from the same house but different room. It’s sad really.
I totally agree, David Draimans voice is amazing. He has the best voice I think I have ever heard. I can not find fault with either versions of Disturbed covering the Sound of Silence. I prefer the studio version. The images make it so much more impactful. The music is different, I think, too. I have heard Simon and Garfunkel my entire life and love this song. However, I never felt the meaning of it until I heard Disturbed's cover. Wow! Tears and goosebumps. Not only the first time, but Everytime that I hear it.
Loved your reaction! One of my fav songs and I have very similar feelings about it as you do. :) Based on your comments about your kids, you may like a song called, "Social Drift Away," by Small Town Titans. Hits you in the feels about the world kids live in.
I heard David in an interview say, that high production values are very important to the whole band, they refuse to put out any song that they can not do as well in live performance.
In the video there is an interesting correlation to what you see and what you hear. I'm not sure what, if any, meaning there is other than face value but in the video, other than the opening image before the song begins, the first instrument you see is the broken piano. The first instrument you Hear is a piano. Then in the video a guitar (strings) is uncovered. The next instruments you hear are stringed instruments. Finally you see a guy pull a drum out of a tree, and the final instrument that plays, is drums. No other instruments are used in the video or the live performance. Piano, strings (guitar, violin, cello), and finally drums.
Just love David Draiman, incredible human being.
💯
You're the first one I've ever seen play both videos in one reaction and talk about the difference

He doesn't reach his growl so
P
Nope, nothing untowarc..

BIG David Draiman fan here from beginning...his voice NEVER falters!!!! New release right around the corner
He is a classically trained Jewish Cantor
My favorite cover of all time and one of my favorite live performances.
Disturbed and Myles Kennedy did a live version in Houston Texas of the sounds of silence
He was sick during this performance
Thank you for this great reaction, David is one of those wonderful hidden gems, most people give no credit to rockers, but there are amazingly talented singers in the rock genre.
Disturbs rendition of “the sound of silence” is my all time favourite song. I sing it every time I went to karaoke and when I rock out in my car full volume. Always gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes 😢
Me too. Every time.
Good for you giving it your all to sing that song at Karaoke! That takes a whole lot, and I admire you for it!
I love how well David brings out the meaning of the song with his fierce singing of "the people bowed and prayed to the neon gods they made." Conan #1 when Paul Simon heard this version of this song that was written in 1964 he said he was putting it on his playlist he was very impressed
He was trained as a Cantor for the Jewish temple.

Paul Simon saw it and sent him a message telling him how much he liked it. I think it was the only one he ever sent for any S&G cover.
It's so crazy, I tear up just hearing the passion in his voice along with the instrumental. 'Course I tear up at a lot of music, lol. Nice reaction!

Paul even put David's version on his online page. That says a lot!!!
My favorite of all time!! It can never be topped!!
I watched the video probably 10 times before I could pay attention to the story in the video itself. I was so captivated by his voice. I am not a heavy metal fan, but this man is so talented! Beautiful voice.
This moves me to tears every single time I hear it. I think both versions are badass. I tweeted at you a couple bands I thought you might like.
Perfection is what took out Steve Perry. He couldn’t deal with imperfection.
I made it to this reaction from your HomeFree reactions :-) you've now hit the two primary playlists I have for crappy days at work - Homefree and Disturbed/Device -- I've now subscribed :-)
The original is a meditation; these are the awakening !!!!!
I grew up listening to the original version. And loved it. But….this by far is the best!!!!!!
#TeamSaucey He was actually sick during this performance too (not feeling well.) And he still sang this well; that's crazy!
My son has seen him sing this in concert twice. He said is just as good in person
I love both versions. A true master of his craft!
Best cover ever. Paul Simon said this is their song now & added it to his playlist.
I told you to stop repeating that lie!!!!!He did not give the song to them!!!!!!!
I still can't get enough of this performance, David is incredible. Absolutely adore your reaction.
David & the band are amazing! Like the live performance best… loved ur reaction!!
Thanks for this! I use to listen to disturbed when younger but haven’t in awhile. This was absolutely amazing and why I love them/him!!
Just imagine, your being dragged to Temple by your parents and this man is your Cantor. Temple just got way cool. Lol
His voice is just so powerful and moving. There's nothing about this I don't like. Perfection
He'll I do NOT remember temple like this! If it had been I wouldn't have fussed over going so much!
David is the best
Absolutely
Both are awesome. I got to meet him and Corey Taylor at church thing they did for suicide awareness event, about 15 years or so ago.
Wow that’s awesome
Love them both. Great reaction. Thanks.
Love both sets, but nothing beats seeing David live.🤘
Which one was better?!! How could you even choose?!! Lol they were both fantastic!
Rite!?!?
That rasp you talk about is called "Vocal Fry". Done wrong it can shred your vocal chords over time, and shorten your career. David Draiman does it right. He'll have a long career, and he'll be able to do that as long as he wants.
I've seen this live when I was shooting photos(I'm a photographer for a radio station). It sounded incredible but their whole show was great.
Played this at her wake it was her jam thank you david
Enjoy.
I've seen disturbed like 12 times absolute perfection
I'm incredibly jealous of you right now. Just sayin.
Great reaction, pulling yourself back out of the couch...
The Live version touched me more.
Get ready for a religious experience! Shakes my very soul! It's a thing of beauty!❤
To me, the original version was just a warning of what will happen if people don’t change. And this version is the consequence of not changing for the better. People now days don’t communicate with others face to face anymore. They’d rather text someone from the same house but different room.
It’s sad really.
I learned something new today, bc I first heard this song from the movie Trolls 🤣🤦🏻♀️
Haha that’s rite!!
Hold up this man needs more likes
I love that you did both versions on the same video…. Muchos senor…
