Written by Paul Simon in 1964. Originally performed by Simon and Garfunkel. “One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966 You can see/hear him say this before they begin their performance here: ruclips.net/video/DczvzKzNLbU/видео.html
Simon & Garfunkel should be PROUD!! They wrote a song of the future we now live in that is “tech world” the re~make was total grace and justice of another Artists message 💋
People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening period period this sounds like texting, doesn't it? And when he mentions and the people bowed and prayed to the neon God they made? I think that represents technology as our new God. Period. Pulse simon wrote this song as a warning Wesley nord
One crazy thing about this recording is that David was sick that day. That's the reason he was seated for the performance. He very nearly didn't perform at all, but decided to go ahead with it and just killed it. This is a very different style than Disturbed's other music (heavy metal) and they wanted to keep it more stripped down in a sort of homage to the original which I think made it more powerful in the end.
I'm a soprano and have a wide range that I can sing. But its when I have a cold, is when I can sing an even wider range. I might feel like crap, but it makes the whole group sound awesomely anointed....
As a 53 year old it’s just a little unsettling to find so many people unfamiliar with this song! It’s just a bit strange because it is so iconic! And I also am one of the millions that actually prefer David’s beautiful version!
I saw Disturbed perform this song while working (I'm a photographer for a radio station)at one of their shows. It was incredible. David Draiman had the flu while performing the Conan performance.
So go back and listen on your own - with the lyrics--and feel how the power in his voice changes with the lyrics. The song was written by Paul Simon in the early 1970’s-- it’s very powerful. It still makes me teary eyed
I felt bad that he misinterpreted a lot of the important most lyrics. Regardless, he came up with his own lyrics, his own meaning and he still enjoyed it. That is what art is about. Personal interpretation.
Go back an read the lyrics ! It's a very ,very deep! Almost Biblical ,"the bowed an prayed to the Neon God they made" . Moses comin down from the mountain with the 10 Commandments and the people "built" (Neon God) their God. Feel it. The sound of silence...."no music" !!
When I hear the lyrics now, I think of censorship, algorithms, shadow banning and canceling. I think the notes of the songs are independent thoughts that are not expressed and no one hears - whether it be from being censored or just out of fear, perhaps under threat of in’s information and opposing a gov’t narrative. The Doctors who were threatened by the AMA and the gov’t that they would have their license taken away if they questioned the narrative or discussed other cures. This began as a dream, a prophetic vision of what was to come. Simon and Garfunkel sang it pretty plain because the future of the message wasn’t impacting them. But David from Disturbed sings it with anger because he knows it is becoming more and more a reality and will be fully realized much much sooner. He’s angry because we let this happen to us. He’s not the only one.
Not many pick up on the subtleties like the guitar riffs or piano. Great reaction bro. Try "Hold On To The Memories" or "The Light" for sure. Both are very inspirational as well as original songs to Disturbed. I like their harder stuff as well but it can get pretty rough at times.
This is one of the best covers of this song! So much that Paul Simon actually posted it on his page and also commented that it was his song now. He loved it that much. This is a great version even though he was sick during the performance but this one in my opinion not only highlights his voice but the instruments. If you watch their original video again my opinion is where he visually tells the story. He is a trained cantor and has this amazing voice. You should watch Down With a Sickness that’s him that’s his vibe. Then you have this and others I think you would enjoy Reason to Fight and Hold onto Memories. His vocals always gives me chills and must say few tears as well. Would love to see reactions to those as well. Great reaction!!
The first version was a light warning, this version is showing us the results of our inattention to the warning. We worship technology, inanimate objects and all the wrong things.
I just now found your channel when this video popped up. Thank God for that suggestion/algorithm, RUclips. I'm not half-way thru and had to share how much I'm enjoying your deep style and interpretation. I hear music and feel songs exactly as you do. That's not a skill one can learn or acquire. It's a soul thing. Awesome reaction vid. Can't wait to check out your past content.
David wanted to do the cover, the band wasn't on board, he promised he would never again ask them to do another cover again, they agreed. Probably their biggest hit ever.
When Paul Simon wrote this in late 1964 he said that his writing process was to shut himself in his dark bathroom, to be alone and a meditative state to bring down new music. Hello darkness my old friend, was his familiar and fruitful process.

Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share No one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets Are written on the subway walls And tenement halls And whispered in the sounds of silence"
I liked your style, I really like that you were wanting to understand what the song is saying and what it's about. But (constructive criticism) if you want to dive into the lyrics in detail, you should probably look at them afterwards, or maybe before, to make sure you understand them correctly. There are at least a couple of places you were talking about lyrics you misheard. One of them is at 05:00 ... it is not "... people talking when our hearts are speaking." "...people talking without speaking" is the lyric here. And at 06:17 it is not "...silence like a cancer groan," it is "...silence like a cancer grows." It's wide open to your own interpretation, or course, but having the correct words help you form an opinion closer to what the writers had in mind. Overall, nicely done! I do seriously recommend the music video, though, too. The imagery is stunning. :)
I'm an atheist, and ex catholic so I just want to present this differently... I learned dream control when I was like 5 years old, and can still wake myself out of a nightmare; it is a learned skill. I either wake myself up or make the dream change directions. :) Digging your reaction and intelligence.
The Best part of this song is David Draiman's hauntingly beautiful voice. The Worst part of this song is the lyrics and music is subdued while your comments are at least 3 times louder. A prospective Subscriber here, please give my comment some thought, and increase the volume of the music, as some of us don't have or use headphones. THANK YOU.
Bro, you should check out this song with Draimen and Myles Kennedy its so powerful. Speaking of Myles Kennedy I think you would really, really like, no ima say love Words Darker Then their Wings by Alterbridge. Your ear holes will thank you gauranteed. I stand by it.
Paul Simon, a great American song writer wrote that song and the fact you, so many generations later, gets it? Just lends more credence to the timelessness of this song.
Darkness comes at night. Sleep usually comes at night with darkness unless you're a shift worker. Ergo dreams come at night. Sometimes our dreams offer solutions to our daytime thoughts and activities. Just the mere fact that darkness invites rest, unless you're a shift worker, makes darkness a friend. No mystery there.
I did watch most of this but reaction to the Conan rather than the original video AND from your comments you don't know it's a cover and therefore haven't researched the iconic Simon and Garfunkel original
Watch the original video in black and white, no sound for the first few seconds. Perhaps a better interpretation available. Simon and Garfunkel performed in the 60s and it was a warning. This cover is angry that the warning was ignored. But the video in B&W, at the end, gives hope.
This song was originally written by Paul simon..a folk song..go back and listen to original from 1964..same sing but very sweet. I luv DISTURBED, SO much better..but the words r still paul simons
Speaking on artists not making music with a story or meaning… Have you by chance dived into the Independent Rapper, Tom MacDonald music? Some can be political or so called controversial but actually he speaks all facts! Other songs are based on his experiences with addiction & sobriety & Mental illness. I’m 57 & really disliked rap with my kids growing up because of the horrible messages .. they’re all adults now & I came across Tom here on RUclips & I’m HOOKED! 😂Start with No Response & work your way up. His girlfriend Nova literally shoots every video! They are an unbelievable Talented Team!
Don’t look so deep into the forest. Your missing the trees. He’s talking about no one listens to each other, songs that never get heard, glitter and gilded.
It’s “eyes stabbed by the neon light” and “people talking without speaking” maybe listen to songs and pull up the lyrics just in case as both of those lines are very clear to hear.
It’s a beautiful song but I do prefer the original. “Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound Of Silence” is one of the best songs of all time and was inspired by Sanford “Sandy” Greenberg, Art Garfunkel roomate and best friend who lost his vision”.
You misheard SO many of the lyrics. I’ll assume you were distracted because you’re more of an instrument guy. His name is David Draimon the lead singer for Disturbed and this was him singing while sick. His voice is phenomenal and you really need to watch their official video for the song for enlightenment on their interpretation of this cover and to concentrate on his powerful voice. The lyrics/song was written and performed by Simon & Garfunkle in the 60s. Not the 70s as some have said.
Listen to Paul Simon's interview about the intent of the words he wrote in 1964. In 2016 and the anger in Disturbed s words when singing ... the neon gods we made........Donald Trump. I heard this song in 64 and watch this performance that night on Conan...I got two totally different feelings after each performance.
If you're going to do reactions to great songs of the past, the least you have to do is research some fact about the songs and its authors. Have you ever heard of Paul Simon? It doesn't look like you do. Look it up. please!! Before guessing what the song means, and if you want to be taken seriously, it would behoove you to read the lyrics before you throw out silly interpretations.
Dude....really??? This is a reaction video!! Never hearing the song before... You know... Hearing it for the first time... If he had done research, it kind of alters the initial reaction..um...DUHHH!!
@@ronkampsen1098 No, it's an insult to the hearing audience having someone so ignorant offering his reaction. Many, if not most, of those who react to songs do some research about it. It doesn't mean that you listen to the song, but at least you get some background and you certainly DO NOT try to guess with you immense ignorance the meaning of the words.
I don’t care about the artist that much to research their life and their mission. The artist may make “cool” music but why waste my time to learn about someone who won’t learn about me 😂💯 You want me to research what a song means and your not paying 😂 You may call me ignorant if you believe so to be true but the character on the screen is for your entertainment. You don’t know me in real life and have no idea how I think or speak. Now, if you don’t mind I’d like to play into your belief of me being ignorant and say to you old geezer go look into some retirement home pamphlets😂
@@neimanmarioit's an insult to the weak mind who finds it insulting. This is art and art is open to different interpretations depending on who is viewing or listening. We don't know this reactor's background and culture, we don't know what he usually listens to... For all we know, this is him opening his mind and heart to something new and, at the end, calling it a masterpiece. Why not just appreciate that someone else is able to appreciate something you do, as well? Why go looking for something negative within it?
You should not use the N word here on your channel. Ya, I get you can say it without reprise and it has a A at the end. It is still the N word and everyone wonders why young white kids say it. Well they hear you all say it and repeat it without knowing the history and reasons it is not alright. If you do not want other races saying it then let it start with you not saying it. Everyone can tell my to STFU well don't care it is not okay. You seem like a God fearing man pray to him and ask him to show you if it is okay or not?
The song is a masterpiece., but what made it a masterpiece is David's voice. You barely mentioned the greatness of his voice.
Some people are into the lyrics , not necessarily the singer or music!
@lookiloo100 I've never known anyone that didn't first like the music/vibe/beat, then got into what the song was sayjng.
I would have never thought someone could cover this classic, beautiful Simon and Garfunkel masterpiece. He made it his own!
Written by Paul Simon in 1964. Originally performed by Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon also mentioned that he thinks Disturbed now owns this song; the only other example I can give of that is Hurt.... NIN/Johnny Cash.

I grew up with this song by Simon & Garfunkel in the 70’s but LOVE how Disturbed covered it!
even simon and garfunkel liked it so it has approved ...
Me too. Never thought I would love a cover like this!

David’s voice was so emotive on this song and yet you gave it so little credence in your reaction.

Not one of but THE BEST COVER EVER!!!
One of the better covers of a song and especially from a rock band
I mentioned it above, but Simon has said Disturbed did it better. Gutsy admission.
BEST SONG cover EVER!!
The first version was a light warning, this version is showing us the results of our inattention to the warning. We worship technology, inanimate objects and all the wrong things.
The song would not have done much without that amazing voice.

Watched so many reactions of this song yet. Have to admit, yours is one of my favourites, because you're digging so much in the meaning of it. Great!
The sound of silence that we created through smart technology. 10,000 people all together staring at a little screen in silence, no longer able to communicate.
He's actually a metal guy. Down With The Sickness is a banger
This is actually a Simon and Garfunkel cover from the 60's
Thanks for an authentic reaction. Hate the 2nd time reaction fakes. Very nice! Note: If you want respect and views, ‘1st’ time reactions only. Those a brain can tell.
He did this song as an urgent wake up call to people
I really love Simon and Garfunkel's song sound of silence this one too ❤

The Samuel L. Jackson reference was your demeanor exactly!! 😂😂
You may not like disturbs other songs, its a heavy metal band
So you haven't heard the original? This is much more powerful when you know the original and can compare/contrast to David's version.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"
Simon and Garfunkel original. “Hello darkness my old friend” is a reference to Garfunkel’s blind friend

This is is a cover of Sion and Garfunkel from 1964...ish. But it is VERY good!
This song is about how we are a dystopian society.
Get ready for a religious experience! Shakes my very soul! It's a thing of beauty!❤

I love this song. 🙏🇺🇸❤️
Really sung with a difference but wow, how good 👍
OMG, Stop trying to analyze the song and listen to his AMAZING voice and range......🙄. I couldn’t even finish your reaction.
This was my radiation song in my head 😢
Awesome thanks 👍

Its just incredible, that you didn't get the talent from the start. You are more concerned about followers, than you are with talent... Good luck
You really needed the original video by disturbed to get the full effect
your eyes trippin
I did watch most of this but reaction to the Conan rather than the original video AND from your comments you don't know it's a cover and therefore haven't researched the iconic Simon and Garfunkel original
Are you making that a request
And just think, he sang this with the flu. This song by Simon & Garfunkel came on the heels of the President Kennedy assassination.

The original video REALLY is more effective! Deep down in your soul!
Great reaction Bro!!!
Mans disconnect to man.
Find the lyrics and read them.
"Silence like a cancer grows."
Had the flu during this performance
This song was originally written by Paul simon..a folk song..go back and listen to original from 1964..same sing but very sweet.

Dude, listen to Down With The Sickness, more their usual style.
Do a comparison from this version of the song, which speaks to me, but the Simon and Garfunkel Never Inspired a Rapport from me.
I get sleep paralysis, night terrors and its terrible.
Do DISTURBED'S STUPIFY.. THE LIGHT... STRICKEN.. PRAYER
You should concentrate on the line “people hearing without listening” you have completely missed the incredible vocal talents of David Draiman
David Draiman ... one of the best voices out there... umm ... you act like you didn't even hear him. Duh...
@1:54 dude sounds like you have a medical issue like epilepsy < no that isn't normal lol
Look up the lyrics
Maybe a little less Interruptions
Read the lyrics bud
Listen to Paul Simon's interview about the intent of the words he wrote in 1964. In 2016 and the anger in Disturbed s words when singing ... the neon gods we made........Donald Trump.
I heard this song in 64 and watch this performance that night on Conan...I got two totally different feelings after each performance.
Bruh your hurting yourself trying to figure what it means
I'm sorry but maybe try focusing on the song and the singer in stead of the instrumentation
Please...its about peoples lack of communication with each other! Listen, less talk!! You fail to mention the amazing voice!! SMDH.
Pull up the lyrics.
Too much pausing too much yaking! It's cancer GROWING NOT GROANING! ❤❤❤❤
stop stopping the video, it pisses people off
im sorry, but this dude needs to check on his hearing.. half of the lyrics he got them wrong :)))))
I know he's jewish so I know he is saying like a mighty jew in the lyrics
For Jesus Christ
no, it does not.
Thank you someone understands 😂💯
You don't know the true meaning of the song. should be researched before you do a reaction.
Dude you have no clue!
