I think the beauty of this version is the balance between homage to the original and Disturbed's spin on it. It would have been easy to for David to come out all balls to the walls, and that's what most people were probably expecting from Disturbed. But it's the restraint in his voice that holds you until the build up that is just awesome. You can also tell that he really listened to the lyrics and put his emphasis in just the right place. I was not a huge fan of the original, but this version just nails all the emotions to me. If you want to hear another emotional version, listen to Paul Simon singing it in Central Park NY after the 9/11 bombings. Talk about chills.....thanks for the review.
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Loved your reaction Shaney.
David had the flu this might with 10 This is an experience...goosebumps and tears. So incredible. At 77 i listen to this a few times a day for inspiration and to calm both. David was asked did he sing like an angel or a devil. I think he responded " yes". Great response by you. Go listen to it again alone. Bathe in it, experience it. If you dont feel, get goose bumps, tear up or just cry then you are souless. Davids voice crawls inside you and grabs your soul.
Love your added personal history with Disturbed's music and the info and commentary on the origin of the song. Nice touches. This version, to me, is utter perfection. Perfectly balanced and poignantly emphasised. Love Draiman's voice. Immensely talented! Great reaction! ❤
Disturbed is still heavy metal, however they have gotten a little calmer. Try a Reason to Fight, I suggest a double feature. First the music video then the live version, it's beautiful. I also love The Light.
Kathy here - just found your channel. Little fact - David Draiman was trained as a Cantor, as was most of his family. Then when he decided to go into Metal, he hired a vocal, coach to teach him how to make the "growl" he has now. Thanks for the reaction.
The poetry-in-song that emerged in the Sixties and Seventies from the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Melanie Safka, Joni Mitchell and many others made the era an artistic renaissance in itself. I know what you mean about perhaps expecting something a bit "more" from this arrangement towards the end, but listening to it for only the second time I like it very much. His delivery does full justice to the power of the words, and I think that's probably why they opted to give the music a stripped back solemnity throughout, to focus strongly on the message(s) in the lyrics. Like you I really love his voice with its impressive depth, range, texture, tone and expressiveness. Really appreciate the way you give some background to songs and artists at the start and, as always, your intelligent reaction and excellent video editing.
Many thanks to Simon & Garfunkel, they have a huge catalogue of work and have influenced MANY current artists.....thanks to them for writing and recording this classic first over 50 years ago, warning us to not turn our backs on the world and it's willingness to embrace "SILENCE"........they made it possible for Disturbed, Pentatonix and others to re-interpret this great piece of music......also, mad props to the video makers....so moving.......
I suggest you look on RUclips and find several of the live concerts and especially the Conan Show performance with a 20-piece orchestra behind him. That performance was nominated for a Grammy and the audience gave them a 10-minute standing ovation.
Iconic song. I grew up in the '60s with Simon & Garfunkel. My oldest granddaughter led me to Disturbeds' cover. I found Geoff Castellucci's cover all on my own. I Enjoy all three covers very much.
I really loved the Geoff Castellucci one so much. The music video to this is actually pretty powerful. While editing and watching it back a few times I noticed things I missed the first time. Beautiful song & lyrics. Just growing up with disturbed I was expecting something a bit "heavier" so my expectations where else where. I saw a pentatonix one I want to check out as well. Thank you for the comment. ✌😊
In Draiman's recent interview w/ Charismatic Voice he mentioned that, because he was so sick when he sang on Conan he ended up doing serious damage to his vocal folds.
Like the background you bring. The Disturbed version is starting to grow on me. The original had a dreamy almost ethereal feel to it and the Disturbed one is heavy and powerful. The vocals here are impressive.
I am not into metal or hard rock, so I don’t really listen to this group. I do love this song, though. Very powerful through lyrics, imagery, and the black/white/sepia tones in the video. It was nice to see enjoyment on your face.
Be sure to watch their LIVE performance on Conan. NOTE: David Draiman was really sick for this performance, and I heard he was not pleased with his performance. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole performance was amazing, and his was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! - Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16 | CONAN on TBS Tbyeam Coco
I had the same reaction after all the hype behind it I was slightly disappointed! Still very good. I have a request since you mentioned you have mellowed in your taste of music and like to get the chills ! Check out Morissette Amon from the Philippines doing a cover of Rise up by Andra Day on this traveling radio station that is a bus. I see you have done Diana and John Farnham so I think you like her. She has a huge Internet following and your subs will jump plus she has a deep rabbit hole of performances. 5 octave range and is a combination of Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston , and Mariah Carey. It’s her emotional transference however and charismatic delivery that really are profound along with the huge voice. She sings every genre not just pop. Be worth a listen whether you do a reaction or not. I’m an old Led Zeppelin guy so I am far from a pop guy but this girl is crazy special and grabbed my heart. I subbed so look forward to your stuff to come. Good luck with channel.
It's a great song. I probably just hyped it up for so long in my mind that it never met my expectations that is all. No ones opinion is stupid and music is subjective. That the beauty of it we all don't have to have the same taste.
Please sir,you wanted more but his way of singing was great. He let you listen to the words, not only rhythm and how important are those words.---Listen here--"People make a neon god they bow and pray to---Did you hear those words????Now where have you seen something like that before???It is right in Revelation where people make a image of the beast from the sea(AI)then the beast from the land give a spirit to this image or AI and it no longer needed programming because now it was a self thinking AI and people will worship this image say Revelation.---The image and the neon god are one and the same---This is a warning and prophetic song---This singer of Disturbed are really showing us with the way he is singing this song that we should all be DISTURBED!!!!!!!!😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

Thanks for the info Kathy. Didn't know that about him. Still think he has one of the most unique vocals I have heard and I love it (:
I think I've watched the original video version 100 times. I get chills and tears every time.

Oh wow! I'm keen for that 😁
Awesome sharing my friend
I know and love the original. This is a powerful version. I live the rising intensity of the vocals and music.
I love the way you have this big grin on your face when you’re really enjoying a song. 🇨🇦🖖🏻
If Jason Momoa and Arnold Schwarzenegger had a baby Shane would be it! 😂

I LOVE this version of Sound of Silence! You're damn good Shane !
Thank you. 😊
You need to see the live version they did on Conan - ruclips.net/video/Bk7RVw3I8eg/видео.html Absolutely breath-taking.
And to add, possibly the best live performance of any song, ever!
agreed
In Draiman's recent interview w/ Charismatic Voice he mentioned that, because he was so sick when he sang on Conan he ended up doing serious damage to his vocal folds.
Will check it out 😊✌
What more could you possibly want from that song?
Like the background you bring.

I agree. It’s cool but not the same impact as the original. Your honesty is refreshing. I love how you give some history before the song plays.
Luv your reaction! ❤️🎼❤️🎼

If have Down with the Sickness playing in my car to work the drive is just 5 minute. Normally it a 15 -20 minute trip🤦♀🤦♀
Jesus brother. Take a breath. Relax. It's a great song that builds up. Wonderful in my stupid opinion.

Kratos, is you?
Yes
😅 words and music
Disturbed's version is pretty great but Dan Vasc's version is much better. Check him out.
Има прекъсване и прескачане на видеото в първите 6 минути. Вероятно го правите за по-голям ефект, но е неприятно и изморително за очите. :(
Fair enough. 😊👍
When the commentator has a much more awesome voice than the singer, Voice not singing. :)
Speaking like a robot much?
You figured me out, I had been sent back to annihilate Sarah Connor but I got caught up in the RUclips hustle 🤭🙄
A period and/or comma mean pause a bit while speaking... Slow down.
Please speak a little slower. Can’t understand you
Luv your reaction! ❤️🎼❤️🎼
