Samsung Ice Maker Forced Defrost

  • Samsung is famous for the ice maker in their French door style refrigerators getting caked with ice inside. Their is a major design flaw that is letting warm air seep inside the ice box which then causes frost to build up. There are other videos out there on how to fix that problem, but this one will show you how to force the ice maker into a "defrost" mode that heats up the ice box to melt the frost and allow you to start making ice again..

    Well done video that addresses a symptom of an issue. The root cause for the ice accumulation to begin with is the ice chute flapper spring behind the dispenser bezel weakens over time and the ice chute door seal leaks. This allows moist 74 F room air into the 0-10F ice box where it freezes and eventually stops ice production. One can test this by pouring a small amount of water with door open down the back of the chute to see if the seal is holding without leaking. The solution is to remove the ice chute flapper located behind the dispenser bezel (see youtube videos). Rather than buy a new flapper/spring mechanism, I simply removed the flapper return spring, added one more turn to increase the spring force beyond original before reinstaling and voila, the flapper now seals properly and little to no humid room air gets with a proper seal and there will be little to no ice crystal formation as you, me and thousands of others have experienced because of a marginal spring force design. Most think it's air leaking from the 36-39F fridge section including many appliance techs and Samsung so they try to RTV the Ice Box to seal there but it's worse as 74F moist room air is getting in wreaking havoc. Early evidence even suggested the seal wasn't working as consumers complained about water leaking out the chute door down the dispenser paddle and in some cases ruining their kitchen wood floors. If it couldn't seal water it wasn't sealing incoming air either and there has been a long running class action lawsuit over this issue. I've repaired mine and several others for $0.

      Note: I don't recommend a replacement spring because to my knowledge Samsung hasn't figured that out and you may get another marginal spring that will start to fail in a year or less depending on ice chute usage. The more permanent solution is to add the extra turn to your existing one. It's a bit tricky to add the extra turn but well worth it. My personal one failed in 1 year but it's going on 3 years w/o ice crystal buildup since the spring repair. Samsung engineers added some new electronics for melting the ice crystals with an elaborate upgrade kit that are now standard on units built after 2018 but I'm a retired mechanical engineer with a background in design and believe the better solution for them was/is to increase the standard spring force.

      Their washers come apart themselves.
      Tbf I wouldn't buy anything but a Whirlpool based Appliance. Kenmore has been known to use Samsung/LG, GE/Haier, Frigidaire/Electrolux for their innards and they are garbage-Look at the model number and part numbers and you will see who the oem is. Avoid Bosch, Fischer Paykel, Old Maytag/Admiral, Kenmore Oasis/Maytag Bravos/Whirlpool Cabrio rotor/stator "direct drive" bearing shaft models, their bearings fail really quick and leak onto the motor, plus the shafts tend to not come you and you wind up having to replace the tub on those washers.

I have had my Samsung for over 4 years and it never had any issues up until recently... I have also figured out how to do this. I just plan on going through the process every two or three weeks. First, I remove the ice bucket and place it in the freezer compartment to prevent the ice from melting. Then I put a towel in the bottom of the icemaker cabinet to collect all the ice and water. I normally have to go only two or three defrost cycles before it is clear enough to work for another two or three weeks. I do not worry about defrosting that last little lump way in the back, which is very difficult to get out.

    Thanks. I simplify it by removing the ice bucket, place a dish towel to catch the thawing ice and water, then I use my wife's hair dryer, at max heat. About 10 minutes later it's all thawed out, including the stuborn ice in the back, top-right. I then turn off the heat function of the hair dryer to cool things down to near room temperature. Then I remove the dish towel, use a paper towel to wipe up any moisture, reinstall the ice tray and 4 hours later ice starts dropping. Please DO NOT use a heat gun. They get way too hot. Cheers

Just steam maker. To fix this issue need replace ice maker or use service kit if available, ice room fan if needed and fill all gaps around ice room with selicon . Check ice box gasket.

This does melt the ice in the ice maker though in my experience. In my video I mistakenly did not have the ice maker turned "off" so it was still trying to cool down. • @TChudoba
    @TChudoba Год назад

    When you say it doesn't make ice, do you mean that it won't dispense ice out of the door? Or that it doesn't make ice at all? My Samsung seems to make ice and fills the bucket in the freezer itself but trying to dispense ice from the door is a bit of a futile effort. Also, I can't seem to pull my ice tray out (inside the fridge) I assume its frozen

    • @tsonflieth
      @tsonflieth  Год назад

      My ice maker will make ice and then will go from not dispensing to not making any new ice. There is a mechanism inside the ice maker that dumps ice into the bucket. That mechanism ends up getting so caked that it won't work at all until I thaw it out. This is about a once per month job for me.

      Here is info on other models. It was posted as a pinned post on the "C.L.S. All-In-One" channel
      There are a couple different models of Samsung Refrigerators
      that may have slightly different Forced Defrost activation settings so here is some other instructions if needed:

      Samsung RF28 Defrost
      To start a “force defrost” on a Samsung RF28 refrigerator, press and hold at the same time “energy saver” and “power freeze/freezer” for about 4 seconds. Then you should hear a “beep”, and the display would show “OFF”.
      For manual defrost press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge/power cool” for 12 seconds. That would power the fridge off. If you press the “fridge/power cool” button, then it will switch to forced freeze mode.
      If you press the same button again for 3 times, then it would switch to forced defrost mode.
      Samsung RF263 Defrost
      Press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge” buttons for 8 seconds. The display would power off. After that, press the “fridge” button four times, the refrigerator would switch to “Fd” mode (forced defrost).
      Samsung RF263BEAESR Ice Maker Defrost
      Press and hold “energy saver” and “fridge” buttons for 8 to 10 seconds. The display wold go bland and the fridge would beep. Press the “fridge” button four times, both the refrigerator and ice maker would switch to forced defrost mode (“Fd” on display ). You cannot defrost the ice maker separately.
      Samsung RF263BEAESR Defrost
      There is an “energy saver” button on the left from the front side of the fridge. And there is “fridge button” on the right side. Press and hold both buttons for about 8 seconds, the display would go blank. Press 4 times the fridge button until there is “Fd” on the display.
      Samsung RF24FSEDBSR Defrost
      Press and hold the “fridge” and “power save” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press the “fridge” button until there is a “Fd” on display. The fridge would beep until the defrosting process is completed.
      Samsung RF23J9011SR Defrost
      Press and hold the “cool select” and “freezer” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press any other button for 4 times to switch it to forced defrost mode. There should be “Fd” on display. The fridge would beep for 25 minutes after that, which is normal.
      Samsung SRF680CDLS Defrost
      Press and hold the “fridge” and “energy saver” buttons for about 8 seconds, then press the fridge button, until there is a “Fd” on the display. The forced defrost mode is on.

You know Samsung could have just fixed the problem quietly but chose to have themselves publicly criticized and forced to atone for a problem that plagued the French door/freezer bottom refrigerators.
    The defrost method while functional, did not remedy the icemaker issues because the build-up was severe enough to negate using the defroster which is kept a secret from customers.

      I have never had mine go for more than about 40 minutes i think. Did you make sure to turn "off" the ice maker before you started? Are you able to pull out the ice bucket? If not, it may be a solid block of ice in there and it might take quite a while to thaw out. If you want, you can try resetting it by pull the power cord and pluging it back in to start over with the cycle. You could also turn it off and on again at the electric breaker panel.
