  • This video discusses the ice-maker issues on a Samsung fridge, including how I contacted Samsung and negotiated to get the upgraded parts installed under warranty on a two-year-old fridge.
Provided is a description of the repairs that the authorized Samsung tech completed.
The following repair steps are shown in the video:
    1. How to put the fridge in forced defrost mode and reset to normal operation.
    2. Unplug unit.
    3. Begin repairs.
    4. Remove ice tray.
    5. How to seal the icebox against moist air entry.
    6. Removing ice-maker.
    7. Removing auger assembly and motor.
    8. Reinstalling new parts. Upgraded parts included: new ice maker, heated drain line on auger assembly, new control board (although the tech suggested that a new control board wasn't always required).
    9. Cleaning the condensing coil.
Note: Always unplug your fridge before doing any work on it. This video is strictly advisory in nature and discusses my own personal experience with the repair the Samsung tech completed.

After playing the defrost and refreeze for 3 years, I finally called Samsung and was able to get the ice maker replaced and resealed at no cost because of the class action lawsuit. The repairman was very knowledgeable and helpful. It took about an hour to replace…so far it is still making ice after about a month has passed.

Wanted to add a current comment to this (04Dec21). Our Samsung refrigerator has been out of warranty for 2-years and when I contacted tech support today, they agreed to repair/replace the ice maker at no cost. Can’t really complain about a company that (ultimately) recognizes their error and agrees to fix it. I didn’t even need to push them hard.

Samsung Canada arranged, despite my RF28HFEDBSR unit being 3 years out warranty, to have my refrigerator fixed at no cost to me. They replaced everything described in this video, including the tray (which was cracked by the ice accumulation). They applied sealant to prevent air leaks as is recommended in the video. The Ice Maker is working well and after two weeks there is no sign of abnormal frosting. I am pleased as punch!

After waiting 3 weeks for the replacement tray, I called Samsung. They passed me on to an Executive who told me they would NOT live up to the commitment voiced by their repairman. I purchased the ice tray assembly for $cdn 130.00 and in view of your comments, I count myself lucky. The Ice Maker is now working fine. I've found NO frost or icing for the last two months.

I did not know about the DF feature. So much easier this way. I am so mad I bought this refrigerator! I see now that I am not the only one. I have owned it for 4 years and have had 2 ice machines replaced, defrosted about a dozen times. I had to have the door handle on the snack and freezer drawers replaced along with the drawer panel because they snapped off the plastic. Now the snack drawer handle just dropped off again while my 5 year old Grandson was just getting a snack. Never again!

could you show how the bucket goes in? There is a metal rod that I can't seem to figure out which orientation it goes in. There is a plastic square piece. Does the rod slide in or under that piece? This metal rod controls the door and ice crusher of the bucket. In my case when I slide it in one way, it only spits out cubed ice, and an other way only crushed. I'm lost here. Thanks

There is a forced ice maker defrost mode you can use without turning off the refrigerator. Depending on your Samsung fridge. Press simultaneously the freezer and lighting buttons for approximately 12 seconds till you hear a ping. Then cycle the settings using the lighting or freezer buttons till you see a “Fd”. That will be forced defrost ( ice maker ) the fridge will ping for @ 20 minutes while it defrosts. You may need to do it more than once. I had to do it for 3 cycles so I could remove my ice tray. Then used the forced defrost one more time to finish defrosting the rest of he ice maker.

my fridge is eight years old and now it’s had it and not worth repairing..fan in back stops working ice maker defrost temperature in fridge rises and in the draw and freezer. Then when it start up again the temperature will drop below the chosen temp..but now i think it’s not even doing that...One technician of 40 years won’t even come out to see it as he says Samsung are just too unreliable with too many variations.....The other technician after one and half hours could not find out what was wrong the fridge had started up...He gave me pointers to look out for, and to call him again when it happened, well we had almost five good days with it except it going below the temperature chosen, but then the light under the door rim began flickering again..pulled the fridge out, and noticed the fan stop and it was this why the light was flickering, so I suppose that light is some kind of indicator....My fridge does not show up erro when these things happen.....I unscrewed the metal plate as I was instructed and the little red light was not on..which indicated there was a malfunction in the computer, if this was the problem it would cost me another 500 dollars and no guarantee. I won’t be repairing I am just going to put it on side of road for the next household Council Clean Up,

I have a problem where the drain for defrosting freezes up and when it defrosts there is no place for the water to go other than the floor of the ice maker. I had to use a hair dryer to melt the ice to take it apart and melt the ice in the drain. Next I made sure the drain tube at the bottom back of the refrigerator was not stopped up. How can I stop the drain tube from freezing up.

They make an aluminum tag that wraps around the defrost coil.(Updated part) It extends down the drain to keep it from freezing. Try tipping the fridge back. Doing so helped mine not freeze up but once a year instead of every month.

So the fix requires a new ice maker, a new auger part, the sealant, and a new computer. I've heard this recently as a fix from other tech guys and it confirms my fears. Not only is the design faulty, but the computer is not able to maintain the ice at bay even with all the other parts working.
