- The thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum is one of the best houseplants for landscaping (although it can look great indoors too if you can provide the light and the space). They become huge monsters very quickly and require very little care. On top of that, they are one of the most affordable and widely distributed aroids in the world. I share the full care tips of this plant, and show you how its usually propagated. I then repotted this plant into a much bigger pot, showing you a very satisfying 15 months update at the end of the episode!

I tried putting this plant into direct sunlight but I did it abruptly and the leaves got badly scorched. Then I saw this video and I decided to leave it out in the shade but outside, and then closer to the full sun. The leaves started to die off but it’s quickly replacing them all with new, much bigger leaves! No exaggeration, every week it shoots out a new leaf.
My local lumber/home store was recently selling these in bunches of 40 separate plants in a pot as a philodendron! I bought one and I'm so glad I saw this video today. I'll separate it now before it gets older and share with everyone I know haha.
Oh yea they are commonly sold as a philodendron for decades but have slightly different care than philodendrons

I have a big one I bought last year as a rehab and I put it outside for the summer and it did so well and grew so much I can’t wait to put it outside this summer to see how huge it’s going to get, it’s already in a 15 inch pot and I love it. During winter I keep it inside in my kitchen where I have bay windows and a west facing sun I love it.

I dont think you had a meally bug problem, you just had an antnest, the white sausages they were carrying around were not meally bugd but ant larvae.
Ants have a symbiotic relationship with mealy bugs 🥰 in house plants, one dont exist without the other.
@@onlyplants that's not true, they also have a symbiotic relationship with Philodendron, the Philodendron produce extrafloral nectar to feed the ants and ants protect the plant against other insects.
The hollowed used soil in the root ball also provided a perfect place for a nest.

I have had the same plant for roughly 20 years. It's in a 10 gallon pot and was very large 10 years ago. It was 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. It got much smaller and I've started taking better care of it. It appears to be getting larger again. It's in a very cold climate to survive, but it's very strong.
Yeah Ive seen it grown outside in subtropical regions with mild winters 😀
This is one of my favorites. I have an 18 year old seed grown one. I treasure it. It's beautiful and so easy. I can't believe it grew it from seed! I keep it outside unless it's going to be very cold. It's so big that it's hard to move.
I've never seen a pest on mine in 18 years. The biggest problem I had was a colony of fire ants in the pot. Fire ants bite !
When I cut mine I had to use a saw ! I just rooted it in water. They're so easy to grow!
Its easily a heirloom plant… one that grow old with us and maybe passed down…

I have a gigantic one in my back yard :) it’s my fave! That’s why I’m here. I know nothing about plants, but wanna learn and definitely wanna propagate my beautiful plants! Also, love ur content. I have had so many of these plants and every nursery I bought them from emphasized to me that they were low light plants…. Moving the remaining one closer to the light so that it hopefully survives. Thank you so much for making these videos! Much love from Texas!
Whoaaa they dont like low light. But they can tolerate it so long as you dont over water it in low light. May grow long petioles and small leaves though…
Sadly, I know exactly what you mean. I am from germany and here the "thaumatophyllum" is still sold as a "philodendron" and they told me that they love little light. I discovered by accident that this is not true and the foliage have literally exploded since it was placed directly in front of a south-facing window in direct sunlight. there is so much misinformation out there that i don't believe the information of any seller anymore.
Yep. I've seen multiple videos and articles saying these don't like direct light. I've even seen advice recommending sheer curtains to filter the light. Definitely hasn't been true for me though, mine thrives in front of enormous south facing windows
I had one of those from 1969 until I moved here in this horrible Government Subsidized Building that had very very little sunlight as there was a Redwood tree blocking all of my sunlight. His name was George and had been my Buddy as we have lived all over this country. I asked if they could trim the tree as it was growing into the roof…. They’re response was …No… so George lacking sun or any light… died one leaf at a time…. I still have his clay pot and someday hope to find another one…. Thanks for Sharing!!

I love this plant so much. I would take this plant as a statement plant over the monstera any day. It’s more easier to control. My old college had a HUGE one with leaves almost 5ft long

I bought four pots of thaumatophyllum from the local market in Manila. Hopefully l can grow it like yours.
They are quite easy 😀 the key is to give more light than other aroids but increase it slowly so you dont burn it.
I learned not to plant directly into a pot with a narrow opening. Luckily I saved the pot by flushing the roots with a garden hose to get all the soil out and it was still a struggle lol never again

@@onlyplants if i have to destroy clay pots to save my plants, i glue them back together. I think that gives that clay pots their very own charm 😊
@@an61149 I'm sorry I can't explain this better but I only have a vague recollection of a culture where broken pottery is pieced back together using gold colored something or other and it not only makes the cracks more beautiful but it also makes the pottery stronger. The video and your comment made me think of it.
Great work really enjoy the video. We do well with these but in our area they can not take a great deal of summer afternoon sunshine we call this a split leaf philiadendrum
Woo they should be able to take full sun. Maybe need to be acclimatized slowly… the original leaves will burn off but the new ones should be able to withstand it ❤️

@@onlyplants they thrive in full morning sun but the harsh southern sun they can not take full afternoon sun. the larger ones are almost 8 feet tall .

Thank you for saying they can thrive in full sun! I just got one and put it in full sun but everything I’ve seen/heard has said “bright indirect light because they grow on rainforest floors.”
I think it may depend on where you live. I live in south Texas, and they are in many people's yards. They clearly burn in direct sunlight down here.

@@elizabethluke8844 You're probably good up there. I could grow many broad-leaved plants in full Missouri sun, but now I'm about 15 minutes from Mexico. My conventional-to-me vegetable garden is spring and fall only. Summer is for guava, avocado, and tropical veggies like Malabar spinach and chaya. It's a whole learning curve for a midwesterner like myself.

I'm pretty sure that pot was worth more than the plant in the United States. We don't really have a lot of great unique pottery for cheap
The pot costed more than the plant here too… but I guess I value the plant more because its a breathing living thing. 🥰

That grew into a beautiful specimen...I've had one of these on my Solarium for along time..yes they do love great light, but our direct sun in the Fall burns the leaves as is lower in the sky...did you grow outside?
I can't do that because it gets well below zero in my climate..in Indonesia you really have good temperatures all year round for plant growth..very tropical.
They are actually grown on sidewalks in full sun here. I have a feeling they need time to acclimatize to very bright direct light. After initially scorched leaves, the next leaves should be more tolerant to direct light
im facing a dilemma. I have this plant growing in my bedroom, and its startng to become huge and wide. i was close to getting rid of the plant by chopping it and throwing in the compost bin. But your comment, " I do value the life of this plant" has stopped me from getting rid of it. We living things want to survive and not die. Giving away or selling the plant is no option because I dont know of anyone nor want strangers to come to my house. I just I will just have to put up with my plant till I find a place that I can call home.

Plants are also forgiving. You can still prune it down to a manageable size or propagate it to start over.
Depending on where you live, I’d bet MANY folks would love to take it off your hands….including me!
About propagation, I dont have this sp. but I have the xanadu, similar plant but smaller. I wanted a bushier plant so I propagated the head cutting with an aerial root and it's fine... But more than a year after the old stem didn't put any new growth, but it's not dead either.

They seem to do well in some direct but I wouldnt put it in afternoon direct or full sun. Partial shade or morning direct would be good I think.
Oooo I actually filmed a xanadu but it rotted off 😅 maybe the woodier base is not so fertile afterall

I grow mine indoors in the winter here in Zone 7. My cat chews on the leaf stems when I am not watching.

I got this plant a few weeks ago but the leaves are getting brown, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong I have it inside with indirect light
When their 10-15 years old theyre able to grow flowers, when their really really happy ( under or by a tree etc)
The leaves get really really big and it grows fast, when a new leaf cones out the flower is already in its full size, when theyre neutral where they are they dont grow flowers or big leaves
(Not flowers, spathes)
Its ok to call them flowers haha, I do too. Technically the flowers are on the spadix!
when the flower is ready, the petals are white and the spadix is white aswell,

The thaumatophyllum xanadu remains quite small… the max leaf size is about a human face. The selloum has been reclassified to thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum 😀
My plant have very thin and light green leaves, that wont stay darker with time. Repoted in fresh fertilized soil few weeks ago (root system was fine), already have some new leaves, that looks healthy, more splitted, but also thin and little bit smaller than previous. Whats the problem?😢
It might be nitrogen deficiency… try fertilizing it lightly
Mine was not growing and I noticed smth weird with aptapicul dominance ( I did not spell that right lol )

If you cut the apical bud off, it should sprout babies from the lower nodes. Its actually one way to propagate them. Make sure you check the roots, as some issues in the roots can cause the apical bud to fail.

I tried to propagate mine, but it somehow didn't work. The head cutting is doing fine, but the old stem has never put a new growth after many months. Yet it's not dead. Do you think the old stem will die someday without any success?
The old stem, especially if they have turned a bit woody, may not be as fertile or productive. Sometimes if you are lucky the mother plant can push out some new vines.
Can you water propagate the pups for a little while?
Surely it wont harm them 😀 but not for way too long because the new water roots may not transfer so well into soil
I have one of this guy, but sadly it can not survive in direct full sun. It’s burnt and stunted :(

Oooh it cannot be suddenly moved to direct light. It will need time to adjust to it. But they grow in complete full sun in many public spaces and gardens.

Wooh yes thats probably the ant eggs… but ants and mealy bugs have a strong symbiotic relationship. In a houseplant environment, one cannot survive without the other.
