Time to Repot? Overdue Repot For Philodendron Bipinnatifidum | Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum

  • All other videos on caring for philodendron bipinnatifidum are linked below. I get asked often about how to know when to repot a houseplant. Since it had been 4 years since this split leaf philodendron was repotted, I figured it would be a good example to use. Turned out it wasn't really root bound, soil hadn't broken down much and the plants roots weren't drastically coming out of the top and bottom of the pot. However, the growth of the plant had drastically stalled, so despite not having the best visuals to explain all of the things to look at for a plant that needs repotting, it still needed to be done. The other main point of the video, just having a look at a plant that has been around the channel and in many videos over the years. The split leaf philodendron is now classified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, so it's not longer a philodendron.

I was watching another RUclips creator and she went on and on about how she loved your channel so of course I had to chime in and let everyone know that you make me laugh and that you know your stuff, also your fur family is an extra bonus. Hope your having a great day, week, life……🌺💚🙃

    I’m a horrible under waterer so the bigger the pot the better for me. Plus when I do water I don’t give them lots of water. I know I’m a bad plant mom. I love plants but have come to the conclusion that I need to focus more on the plants that I really really love instead of trying to have what everyone else has even though I do like the plant or plants. Only the ones that would break my heart if I lost it.🌺💚🙃

    I've been outside since 4am watering and feeding the crap out of everything now that the temps are coming down and a chance of rain in my forcast....FINALLY!!! AN END TO THE FRICKIN TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT. Am also doing alot of repotting and top dressing so things will recover while I'm waiting for FedEx to bring me my first shipment of orchids. About a month ago I bought an unnamed heliconia from Wal-Mart, well it just produced its first flower and it's stunning...it has bright almost fuchia pink bracts and white flowers!! Another cool thing is back in April I received a scarlet torch banana from yey broms and the thing is growing like a weed, it's already 3ft tall and has produced 2 babies already...its only supposed to grow no more than 5ft tall before blooming. It's in a 3gal pot and already needs transplanting....gotta love it when things workout like that😛

    Thought that was going to be more work than it was! I struggle with repotting large plants so I dread it. Spent over an hour on a Thai and decided to just chop and prop. Props took a long time to root but now I have three and one more cutting that just took months to root. Should have just left the darn thing!

    Perfect timing...I have one of these that got too big in the small sun room.... I put it outside in filtered sun for summer 2 years ago and decided not to bring it back in shoved it under the bananas ( That area has been good for them all winter)....I forgot in was under a fern....and....ll be darned it froze some both winters...and that plant was still alive, putting up 1 new sprout in a bare pot....pitiful.....awwwww ....I will repot....and see what it does over summer...I may bring it back in....I feel guilty....it went through 2 winters outside. Its earned a break.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  2 года назад

      When I'm uncertain about a prop like that, I make a small cut on the stem and tie a bag stuffed with wet sphagnum around the cut to see if it will root. If it doesn't then there's a cut in the stem, nbd, and if it does then I cut below the bag and stick in some soil.

    Rain? I’m not sure I know what that is? I have had to set up a rotating system to keep my gardens alive. We’ve been so long without a decent rain that we’re bone dry. I figured if I deeply water an area it can wait until it’s next turn then after I’ve caught up not watering quite as long.🌺💚🙃

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  2 года назад

      That works well. Heavy soaks on a rotating schedule during these heat spells makes total sense to me.

    I repotted mine but I love in Houston and July was over 100 every day all day and like 90 at night, it’s pretty yellow now 😩 I think it was just too hot because a lot of my plants are sad. I only have my porch of my townhome and it was an oven this summer.

    • @TropicalPlantParty
      @TropicalPlantParty  2 года назад

      We had similar weather in July which was why I waited to repot mine. They are super tough plants, even if you lost some, or even all of the leaves, id imagine it will bounce back.

      I have plenty of bugs. I use insecticidal soaps and neem every other week to help control them. I've also started spraying all my new plants before bringing them to the backyard and letting them live with everything else.

    Jeff, maybe a silly question.. but what about full ground which is enriched with organic materials. How do you keep that healthy, fluffy and not a muddy mess? It that why compost /mulch are being used?
    I'm redoing my garden end of augustus and finally my potted plants will go in full ground!

    • @TropicalPlantParty

      Having a diverse array of organics like compost in addition to various sizes of grit(sand and gravel) and worms usually keep things aerated underground. 😊
