- I got a beautiful Thaumatophyllum spruceanum in the mail (formerly known as Philodendron goeldii), so I thought I'd show you how I cut back some of the mushy roots, potted him up, and placed him in my space.

Thaumatophyllum! It means *"Miracle Leaf"*
Some folks are unhappy that the "Split-leaf Philodendron," T. bipinnatifidum was reassigned to this new (actually older) genus. I hope the meaning of the genus name takes out some of the sting of learning a new name.
I am one of a dozen or so members of the FaceBook group "Thaumatophyllum" who will be glad to see the revived name so prominently featured.
Summer, what I use for a "potting bench" is the kind of tray that is sold to sit under a washing machine to catch leaks. It is lightweight, easy to clean and can be tucked away. One of the best purchases I have ever made. They are sold at home improvement stores by the washing machines.

*Why Did They Change The Name?*
One obvious difference from other Philodendrons is in the stem. Summer's plant is not big enough to show it well but the stem is sturdier and thicker than Philo's. There is nearly no internode, so a mature plant's stalk shows a pineapple-like texture of leaf-scars, often with prickly bits around each.
What's more important is genetics. For hundreds of years Philodendron species have easily been hybridized by enthusiasts, but none of the Thaumatophyllum group would cross with the others. Genetic analysis has recently shown there are important differences in the chromosomes.
Man...thaumatophyllym needs a name change....something easy to say, and that will sound beautiful to say.
@@lorijones3891 ... How about "Miracle Leaf"? That's the meaning of Thaumatophyllum!
You do seem to know a fair amount about these, I don't suppose you'd know if it;s possible to take a cutting of or otherwise propagate one? Can't find any information online on how to do so for my life.
@@ChurKirby ... Because the nodes are so tight, you should have at least six inches of stem before cutting.
The top cutting absolutely must have aerial roots. Soil roots will not come from the stem, only from aerial roots surrounded by soil.
Let the cut stem air-dry completely (possibly two days) before setting it in soil or water to prevent rot. It will not wilt a bit in that time.

I hope you do a video showing how to make a cutting / air layering of Thaumatophyllum spruceanum. There are a lot of repotting videos but no video on propagation.
RUclips is recommending vids about hoarders on the side thingy of this video (i don't watch these shows or vids on here, so...)

I ain't, i love it. Actually, i'm slowly turning my 2-dudes/plants-that-mom-gave-me-that-i-killed apartment into a small jungle as well thanks to you.
It looks like an amazing plant! it reminds of some Anthuriums. Reused clay pots can also be baked in the oven to eliminate any fungi spore or virus presence, Just 10 - 15 minutes. Same for some soil that can be reused. What grow light bulb are you using? It looks bright but the spread seems very narrow. With the inverse square law of light intensity, the plants not close to the light may get very little. I am also wondering if Thaumatophyllums being free standing may require more light in general than vining Philodendrons.
Beautiful plant, I would definitely add one too my collection! I don't know how you remember all the scientific names of these plant's , I can't even remember most of my cousin's names,lol!

Is the first plant, a hybrid or in the family in the umbrella plant. It looks like a fancy umbrella plant.
Hey Summer (~8. With your clay/terracotta pots there you reminded me of something. Are you aware of the major disadvantages of porous clay pots? And of the "perched water table", drainage, and wicking, in pots? These 2 subjects are known about in the underworld of horticulture 😄, but not generally known. They are actually of major importance. Scientific enthusiasts usually know about them. You are so popular, would you consider making any videos about these subjects? If you want to know more, just ask and I'll give some more input. You could help to bring this knowledge more out into the open.

Your thaumatophyllum reminds me of mine which sadly died in the winter months and I had searched so so hard for one 😥
But have you got any tips for caring for one because I’ve noticed that before it’s death mine always had rather deformed leaves or irregular numbered palmate leaves
Don’t know if you noticed or not but the fresh roots kinda have a citrusy lemony smell
I have this with a trunk on it so it's really gotten big over the years. I'd like to propogate it, but have no clue. It's never seeded or anything.

I have had dirty nails my whole life, I hear that. I grew up on a farm, and now work as a horticulturalist. Never gonna have clean nails.
The shelfs for the pots ... do you know Who did them ? (I mean the 1st version I think... this is a little old artifact... unbelievable that this is still up and doing his job.)
Do you know anything about aspidistra? I divided and abused mine a bit while looking for the best possible automatic watering system (I have a lot of plants, often in difficult to reach areas) and one planter is down to one leaf... I suspect it’ll be fine as it’s watered and under a grow light now (no more neglect)... but if you’re experience says otherwise... that would be good to know.
I have couple of questions. First is it a special reason to use distilled water? Second, may ask where you order your beautiful plant from? I have been using Amazon. But they come in beat up.
Andrea Daleydalet I can tell you I use distilled because my tap water is chlorinated AND fluoridated and a lot of my plants get brown spots from it. There’s also a ton of salt and minerals in my tap that seems to coat the soil after a while.

Yes, grow lights (google it real quick!) There are some cheap ones on amazon.

why do you use distilled water?
Concerned what's in my water / in my old pipes and I didn't have my hose out, which has a water filter, so I just grabbed for the distilled water, (which I drink too).
