Do you think the ’01 Hurricanes team could’ve beaten an NFL team?
Definitely
Hail to the no...Great Miami team tho...Pro football is so different from the college level, no way Miami beats a far superior NFL team.
If they. Get nfl coaching. That team would beat someone.
Nah I watched that team they were great but against an NFL team stop it
@@earlismarks7108 they would lose to the jags
As a Canes fan I can only hope one day we can get back to those real U days with those kind of talented players again
Here to tell you no u can't!
It definitely won’t be this year 😩
We won’t man these kids don’t wanna compete like that no more

Yeeeeah he got a point Uncle Shay. . . Them dudes didn’t just make it to the league. Most of em had long impactful probowl/all-pro careers.
Yes they did but even all of them had learning experiences when they came into the league and yes they all had great careers but you’re not beating a pro team. Those same player LEARNED from those guys around them when they came into the league.
They were just so young. That's the only argument
Clinton Portis: We could've beaten somebody in the NFL
Ole Shay: Na..no y'all wouldn't!
😂😂😭💀💀
THANK U SHAY!!!!!! Years ago I said the exact same things when a debate came up about a college team beating an NFL team. Everybody on that college team isn't going pro, but everybody in pro, is in pro. Also, that Miami team struggled with Boston college that year...calm down Clinton.
Some of that is because they don't get enough playing time, and they would have perhaps fared better if they went to lesser schools.
You falsely believe that every pro is better than every college kid...which is foolishness. HALF the NFL starters, could not start on that 2001 Cane team. Facts. Canes would have beaten several NFL teams, easily.
@@craigwallace4560 Every player on that 2001 Miami team didn't make the nfl, nor did every starter, but every nfl player is on an nfl roster. It's something to b said when guys who actually played in the nfl say that a college team can't beat an nfl team. I'll take their word for it.
@@jnutbutter All those Canes know it. That's why Clinton Portis said it. No point in arguing with Shannon, but Portis and all them boys know it.
@@craigwallace4560 I applaud Portis for his confidence, but I'd have to see it to believe it.
Ken Dorsey was their quarterback conversation is over.
Yep.
During that time , there was a couple of teams that was winning games and the QB wasn’t the greatest to say the least . Brian Griese , Trent Dilfer & Jeff Flake in BAL , Tim Crouch was terrible and had a winning record … Needless to say , That 01 Miami squad could definitely could’ve beaten a few teams
@@Put_U_Smooth no way they beating NFL team relax
@@ronaldjones4525 i agree. i don't think any college team is going to beat an nfl team. even with as many future nfl players as there were on that 'canes squad, we're still talking about college age kids going up against fully grown men(most of which are at their physical peaks). That said - i've never seen such an other-worldly talented team as '00-'01 Miami. and even though Dorsey didn't end up having an impactful nfl career, he put up huge numbers in college(he was a heisman finalist).
@@the503creepout7 the 2000 2001 hurricanes beat the 02 Texans I guarantee it

That Miami team was STACKED with 20+ draft picks every year for 4 years straight. I love Portis giving respect to Shockey. I'm a lifelong Giants fan and Shockey changed the TE game.
False
Facts! I’m an Eagles fan and I remember how dominant he was especially when he first came in
Shockey was nice! But y’all crazy to say he changed the TE game….
@@jawdropshop I would say he changed it in a sense of the skill set he brought to the position. He was the first of the generation of TE’s we see now. Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham, Gronk, and now Kelce of course took it to another level. Not saying he’s a HOFer or nothing.
I’m 54 years old and I have seen some of the best tight ends of all time. Those of you who are in your 20s ask your fathers. Kellen Winslow CHANGED the game. He ran the reverse, split out wide many times and was a yac threat each time he touched the ball. As for the “01” hurricanes that team is the greatest cast of team talent I’ve ever seen but give me a break. The worst NFL team in 01 would have beaten them 55-0. If Bama played the NYJ today they would get beat by 4 or 5 tds easily.. Lastly no team has ever had 20 players drafted in one year.
I remember I talked to a young man from my hometown that played for the Univ. of Michigan, started, got drafted. I asked him the difference between high-level college football vs. NFL. He said the speed and power of the NFL is on another level. Everyone is fast and everyone is strong and powerful.
This is half true. I know multiple NFL players, and there are several that were not even close to that talent, strength, or speed of the Cane Starter between 2000 and 2002. Its not close. That Canes team would have been 8-8 in an NFL season, if not better!
@@craigwallace4560 He gave his perspective based on his experience. It was 100% true to him.
I am a diehard Miami hurricanes fan but he lost his mind when he said Shockey, Bubba Frank, Winslow, changed the game @tight end while staring right smack dab in the face of Shannon Sharpe
You have to understand that Frank and shockey they were big and fast. Sharpe he was a small TE.
@@tyronehall207 they were bigger and faster yeah, but Shannon was blocking for a 2k rusher as well as being a number 1(sorry Rod Smith) pass catching option. SS is arguably on most people’s MOUNT RUSHMORE of TE’s
@@tyronehall207 they may have changed the TE game in college. But definitely not in the pro’s. Not by any stretch
A pro team is playing a pro team every week. Not just once in a lifetime. The level of competition that even the worst pro team is CONSTANTLY being exposed to is a form of PREPARATION that even the very best college players cannot replicate.
This is the absolute best explanation for anyone who thinks college kids could beat grown men in football or basketball.
@@MattBravado fax, the worst team in the NFL scores a few TD's against the best teams regularly even if they lose.. the canes wouldn't even get passed the 50 yard line against any nfl team
@@tonysopranooo1 yep even the Raiders with or without Carr would put up 90-100 on that 01 Canes team and they wouldn't even score because people cannot compare the level of college to NFL,they are fools to think college kids can play with pro athletes (being fair)that once were college athletes
Give it to Uncle Shay, he always a 💯 whether u agree wit him or not...👍🏾
LoL you could tell Shay felt some type of way when Portis brought up Gonzalez and other tight ends but didn't mention him.
There's a reason HS players have never and will never be allowed to go straight to the NFL! Clin Po is way off thinking his UM team was more talented than his NFL team...they might've appeared that way going up against other college kids.
Jeremy shocky was a tough TE
He told Shannon sharp Tony Gonzalez was the only tight end in the league lmao shade!!!
Bruh I was wondering if I heard that right that was wild
As much as you wanna hate in Portis, he is right on everything he just said
Ima die hard 🙌🏾 fan.
Our O-Line was our weakest link, would’ve got demolished by any NFL D-Line.
What lol they allowed like 4 sacks all season
That '01 Panthers team was so doodoo that no Miami wouldn't even have beaten them. A NFL DLine will destroy a CFB OLine, and that alone will prevent that offense from doing anything
True, but the recievers at miami would detroy those panthers corners. Maybe try quick screens
You probably right
it wouldn’t even be a competitive game. The people that think a college team could compete with a professional team are showing their ignorance respectfully…
@@bobnob1376 lol college WR ain’t “destroying” any nfl corners. As the OP said the Dline of the nfl team would completely obliterate any college OLINE. College team might realistically have negative yards by the end of the game
@@BlackNationNetwork if your talking about a veteran nfl corner then no, a corner 1 year removed from college then yes
I'm not saying Portis is right but almost every guy he named went to the Pro Bowl when it mattered. The other guys were just "in the NFL."

Bob Stoops "MIAMI"
That Miami team was the best equipped to beat a nfl team and they still wouldn’t have gotten it done but they would’ve made it interesting for about a quarter maybe a quarter and a half but either way it would be over by halftime due to all of the injuries the canes would have because at the end of the day they’re going up against full grown men
In the wise words of Chris Broussard..."STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP IIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTT"
I am a big time Hurricanes fan. I've been watching them play since the days of Chuck Forman and Tom Sullivan. That's over 50 years. As much as I love the 'Canes, NO COLLEGE TEAM CAN BEAT A PRO TEAM. Clinton Portis should have been a #1 draft pick. Those players on the 1998 thru 2003 teams were some of the greatest talent in the history of college football. Most of those players went on to become All-Pro's and many became Hall of Famers. Miami was called Quarterback U because of Fran Kersey( probably spell different), George Mira Sr., Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinnie Testerverde. Ken Dorsey, Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson, Gina Torretta were some of the greatest college quarterbacks ever. Miami also had some great runningbacks to make it to the pros. They had Chuck Foreman, Otis Anderson, Edgerrin James, Najeh Davenport, Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee, Frank Gore. They also had some of the greatest runningbacks in college, Steven McGuire, Danielle Ferguson, Duke Johnson. Miami also produced many great groups if Wide Receivers, Tight Ends, Defensive Linemen, Line backers and Defensive Backs. I will write another comments on Defensive linemen U., linebackers and Defensive backs.
Best team in college football EVER
Best team of all time.
The worst nfl team would kill the best college team. There is a size difference that cant be overcome
Nah Alabama would lose to the jags today 19 year olds beating grown men nah!
not only would they lose they would get blown out and dominated…
bama is not the 01 canes
Lol how he gone mention TE that changed the game when the guy hosting the show already did that before them. He ride with tha U till the end.
Yeah that was disrespectful
.. that 01’ MIAMI squad is the best College Football team ever assembled. The difference between the guys in the NFL and the guys who went to the League “from” Miami is .. the guys from Miami were STARS IN COLLEGE AND IN THE NFL‼️
Errrbody from tha U say that 😅
Agree! 01 CANES WAS THE NASTIEST OF THE NASTIEST! THE U 👍🏼
It’s not talent but age that would make this a mismatch: a 30 year old man would just dominate a 19 year old.
People forget Sean R.I.P was on the special teams on that canes team SOOO
thats how deep and good they were that taylor was down to special teams
Meh. Don't forget, ken Dorsey was the qb. That was the weakest link of that squad, and NFL teams would force him to beat them. Can't win without a decent qb in the NFL.
that 01' team woulda break the breaks off of half the league..... sheit.....
No. The O-Line&D-Line wouldn’t be able to hold up.
I usually agree that even the worst NFL team would beat the brakes off a great college team but idk if the worst team in the NFL had multiple hall of famers on their roster so idk it would probably come down to depth
You’re not playing the Miami Hurricanes at their prime though. Yes they had a lot of 1st rd draft picks and Future HOfers but many of them were freshmen and sophomore at the time. Just to put into perspective, the 0-16 lions Had 5 1st rd draft picks in their offensive line and 6 that were all American
So he gonna sit there and talk about tight ends that change the game and didn't mention the one sitting in front of him and played with.
Lol dirty.
“Everybody in the nfl is in the nfl”
They definitely could beat the jags lmaooooo
Shannon sharpe changed the TE game facts og
FYI there were 38 players drafted on that team, 17 were first rounders....
I'm a "U" fan for life. But don't think the best considered college football team ever will beat the worst NFL team. I might get hammered for this, but I can't see it.
It's like saying the greatest old division 3 team could never beat any division 1 team. an unusually stacked / GOAT college team could definitely beat a NFL team.
The only way I could ever see a college team beating an NFL team, is have the worst NFL team ever and getting a college squad that’s full of 4 and 5 star blue chip recruits and run the Chip Kelly system where the o-line doesn’t have to try to block grown men for 10 seconds every play.
The NFL defenses are too elite. And the schemes are something else. Also in the NFL nobody is doing it with the talent alone … they eat , sleep football.
Last interview before he going to jail
I forgot about Dan Morgan.
Just remember when the college select team play the NBA Allstars and they would beat them. Not every player on the college select team will play in the NBA.
Stooooop it. Every man knows #1 that there's a difference between 18-21 strength & "grown" man strength. And #2 they remember the day we found out the difference.
A college team would get demolished on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Miami can have all the speed and great skill players they want, and it won't matter.
Clinton Portis has CTE❓
I still feel the 01 Canes could get an NFL team. Probably the worst NFL team but I think they were that good. That is still the best college team I have ever seen with probably that 19 LSU team second.
Lifelong Canes fan! That Miami team is the greatest college team of all time. With that said no way they would beat any NFL team. They would get annihilated at the line of scrimmage alone against grown men.
Uh no....
Great team, but no way could a college team beat an NFL team.
The Browns
Accordto skip Bayless, he thinks the 2014 Ohio state Buckeyes would slaughter the 2001 Miami hurricanes.

Yeah beat them in a game of cards
There’s a reason you don’t jump to the NFL like the other major sports!
With the right QB they could've beat one of them bottom tier teams
2001 canes had 38 players go to the NFL. Yes they could’ve beat someone 😂
probably the detroit lions
No dude it was John Mackey.
Shannon is wrong wrong wrong
If you put the nat champ vs the team w the first draft pick, the college team wins at least half the time
I highly disagree with Shannon… look how many pro bowlers were on that team
What Shannon Sharpe does not realize is that for every Kurt Warner that made it, there are 50 guys just as good who did not make it. That's just how sports is. Timing, a coach who believes in you, etc. He believes that the rest of those Canes that didn't play pro were not good enough, which is foolishness. That '01 Cane team would beat HALF the teams in the NFL. Plus, its mostly on the starters. If Trent Dilfer can win a super bowl title, trust me, the Canes can beat the lower half of the NFL teams with the 2001 group.
ever heard of a bust? yeah you can make it to the league dont mean you gon be good dont mean you’re a game changer doesnt make you elite none of that its people that were GREAT in college & got to nfl & was absolutely NOTHING.
It's not just "talent"... It's coaching.
The NFL schemes, even the bad ones, take away strengths and maximize opponents' weaknesses.
Give even a bad NFL coordinator 3 games worth of film, and they would completely neutralize any college quarterback, blocking scheme, etc.
It would be ugly.

Could the 2001 Hurricanes beat a modern pro team... yes they could have. Modern players do not practice the way players in 01 practiced. They had way more reps, practice was way more physical.
Ridiculous. Ken Dorsey was not leading them to victory over a Pro team. Stop capping.

What about ray Lewis👿
id bet so much money the college 01 miami would beat the worst nfl team, yes all nfl players had to make a roster, but that 01 team didnt just have nfl players , they had hall of fame nfl players , and im also willing to bet alot of the other guys that didnt make it to the nfl on miami could have made it but didnt for one reason or another. Not only that its the cohesiveness of the team. id bet everything on it.
The absolute worst NFL team would’ve beaten the breaks off the U. Like Shannon said, everyone in the NFL is in the NFL. Only 15-20 members of that U team made to the league and only a few lasted more than 3 years.
The 2001 CAR Panthers went 1-15..The 2001 UMiami Hurricanes were very good and went 12-0..It might be a good game..I would still pick the Panthers..😆📚🏈👣
That was the Panthers team that started Chris Weinke IIRC. This was before they got Delhomme from the Saints. Miami already beat that team in a way when they beat FSU in 2000 at the OB.
