- The 2001 Miami Hurricanes are considered by some experts and historians to be one of the greatest college football teams in college football history. The Hurricanes scored 512 (42.6 points per game) points while yielding only 117 (9.75 points allowed per game). Miami beat opponents by an average of 32.9 points per game, the largest margin in the school's history, and set the NCAA record for largest margin of victory over consecutive ranked teams (124-7). The offense set the school scoring record, while the defense led the nation in scoring defense (fewest points allowed), pass defense, and turnover margin. Additionally, the Hurricane defense scored eight touchdowns of its own. Six players earned All-American status and six players were finalists for national awards.

Vilma was one of the nastiest defensive guys ever. I miss guys like him on the squad at the U. This brings chills to me to this day as a fan and alumni.

Yes I totally agree with you they didn't have a weakness in any positions on that team. I went to all the home games that year at the old Orange Bowl. Most of the players on the other teams had looked exhausted by halftime. They couldn't keep up with Miami's speed. Great memories back then 🍊🏈
Shockey was the first TE I’ve seen play that style of football. Can set the edge and run a perfect route. Amazing to watch.
They were passed over for the 2001 title game and got absolutely jobbed in the 2003 title game. This collection of players was the best group assembled and should have won 3 straight titles.
John Breneman yep...never liked the Canes but there is no denying they should have won the following year and would have killed Oklahoma had they rightly been put in the title game over FSU the year before. But, this was the best of the 3 teams.

I remember watching this game when I was 19 years of age back on January 3rd, 2002, with my late mother the year she passed away. Both of us were simply stunned at the talent the Miami Hurricanes had. It's an absolute travesty that they've done to the football program. Moving from the historic Orange Bowl in Little Havana to that NFL stadium so far away. The talent that night simply shocked and overwhelmed Nebraska. The talent on that team was unreal. Andre Johnson, Vince Wilfork, Jeremy Shockey, Joaquin Gonzalez, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed I could go on and on.

I am a Florida fan but this team was the greatest team of all time. I would have loved to see them and 95 Nebraska go at it.
Miami would’ve stomped them. Not even 95 Nebraska could hang with the speed and physicality of that 2001 hurricanes squad. That was a junior NFL team out there, like grown men against little kids. The Canes were a machine. They had NFL players up and down that roster, many of whom didn’t even start in this game.

I believe he was on the team but he was on the bench, that really goes to show just how stacked this team was that someone as great as him was sitting.

Greatest team ever. Its amazing/ridiculous how damn fast those Canes were. Don't want to ever hear about how fast USC or anyone in the last 20 years (to include Bama even) has been. This team was denied a chance at a title the year before and everyone knows if FSU could hold the Sooners to 13 points the Canes would have been able to as well and would have hung 40 or more on slow assed Oklahoma.. I still believe against O state that the officiating was very nfl style that night. O state held all freaking night. Oh well no one can ever take away from Canes nation the greatest team ever!

None of Nick Saban's Alabama Teams of the 2000's could ever have beat this 1 College Football Team. They were that good !
