  • Welcome back to Talking Dragon Age, the show where I talk about Dragon Age. Today we take a look into the Void. I've been trying to get this video out for weeks, and I'm so glad it's finally here. It turned out better than I thought it would, too. More videos on the way!
    If you have any suggestions on ways to improve the show or theories I could cover, please leave comments or message me directly.

    Hmm, that staff reminded me of another one. SPOILER ALERT: In Dragon Age: Asunder Wynne used a staff given to her by the Warden. It was blighted and when she cast fire with it it wasn't hot, but COLD to the point of burning. Also, she started going berserk and was clearly not herself in that moment.
    Another SPOILER from The Last Flight: Isseya, during an encounter with the archdemon, described what blight magic feels like. She noticed that what the archdemon made was definitely magic, but there was no fade present in it. It was a vortex of both spiritual and physical darkness. The physical part of it applied force and the spiritual one drained her of life (her hands started turning white).
    So far as I know, Isseya's experience is the closest description of the blight to date.
    Just thought I'd drop this in if anyone were to make something of it ;)

    I imagine the void to be another realm like the fade. Except the fade is all "existence", a place where even your thoughts can shape reality, full of memories and emotions (remember how Solas felt that the fade and spirits were more "real" than our world). And the void is the very opposite

    My theory: I think the Void is inside a dead or wounded Titan very deep underground Thedas. Perhaps the Titan Mythal struck down. The Forgotten Ones took up residence inside this Titan and the Titan's death/illness and/or Blood Magic relative to binding a Titan created the Blight. The Blight came from Hell below, not Heaven above as the Chantry would have us believe.

      AgnosticGamer | ValyrianSorcerer I like this idea! That a dead Titan is the source of the Blight/Red Lyrium is really intriguing!
      I'm hesitant to believe a lot of ideas on how exactly Titans connect to Red Lyrium, because I still find it odd how no one in recorded history knew about Red Lyrium. But I do really like the idea of it being caused by dead Titans.

      I think this might be the case, remember in Witch Hunt we we learn of elves living underground with dwarves. These may be a some sort of rebellious group, or "forgotten ones".

    Perhaps the void is a world between worlds. Like the crossroads, the place where all the eluvians meet. It is said the many were locked by ancient elves. Maybe the ancient elves or Solas sealed away the entrance to void. Making it inaccessible

    there is a sky under ground and the Dwarfs are afraid of falling it to the sky when they come to the surface so they might be afraid of falling in to the sky in the titans not the one on the suface

    So where does the Anvil of the Void come into play here? If dwarven souls were separated from their bodies to become golems via the Anvil, were they passed into nothing somehow to come through the process as a golem?
    Something that I've always wondered about with DAO, is if it wasn't coincidental that the closer you got to the Anvil and Branka, the heavier the dark spawn activity...

    • @TheKingdomEntertainment
      @TheKingdomEntertainment  7 лет назад +8

      Amy Slowik Grossman I definitely wondered that myself. I'm really not sure if the Anvil is actually related to the Void, or if its name is a coincidence. I think the increase of darkspawn is just because it was SO deep underground, and the darkspawn just nested near there. But perhaps the Anvil did draw them near there, who can say?
      But on that note, if the Anvil was somehow connected to the Void, shouldn't the lyrium on it have been red? Though I guess even that is just a theory...
      Blah, words are mush. You know what's frustrating? Answers that aren't answers.

    I know this sounds crazy but happy to share and hear your thoughts on it.
    When you physically enter the Fade in DA:III I noticed the cliffs/rock formations High in the sky (physical entry being key). They look very similiar to the ones in The Wellspring in Descent. It is also sort of a cloudy sky in the Fade.
    Considering The Stone is where lyrium seems to come from and lyrium is pure magic, could it be that lyrium creates the realm of the Fade?
    Right below the Wellspring?
    The amount of lyrium required would be absurd but it could be that the Fade realm is simply built upon it.
    There were so many lyrium veins by the titan it seems plausible since there are even more Titans.
    This would be a cool explanation why lyrium is good for strengthening the connection to it. And why you can go there physically, doing it physically means the place to exist to walk inside, not just a collective hive of all souls utilizing it through magic.
    It could make an interesting part about the theory that lyrium is the source of all life aswell.
    The dwarfs where made physically there by The Stone while the sheer energi of lyrium created the souls of elves, humans and Qunari on the surfare because it spread through the veins uppward? Also why dwarfs don’t dream is because they were physically made there being true ”Fade Realmers” connected to the lyrium like with the Titan at the end of Descent. Every one else has no physical connection to the place only through the magic from lyrium exept for mages.
    It could be that they lived in the Wellspring from the beginning but because of many reasons expanded, greed, curiousity etc. So as to why there exists dwarven settlements etc so far bellow the Deep Roads is because they climbed upward.

    I took the line of the inscription on the Staff of the Void that read "the void has always been within" to mean that it was part of human nature, or could be used (like magic from the Fade), not that it wasn't evil, though that too may be true.
    That may have something to do with the fact that I suspect the Blight actually did come from human nature, though, and by extension what happens to spirits when they turn into demons is like a human becoming a ghoul.

  • @salmonsalmon8124

    In my head the Void is somehow the source of all creation and all things magical, including lyrium. Though it’s mostly based on what we know from Solas.
    In DAI after his spirit friend dies Solas tells you that he went to sleep and found the spot where his friend used to be, but it was empty. Then he admits to noticing ‘some stirrings of energy in the Void’ and concludes that one day a similar spirit might appear, yet it will likely have a different personality, because ‘the natural state of spirits is peaceful semi-existence’ and as we already know spirits (as the Fade itself) are shaped and changed through their encounters with people.
    So my theory is that the Void basically provides ‘the building blocks’ for the universe. It’s a very powerful source of ‘neutral’ energy that under the right circumstances takes form of spirits, creates the fabric of the Fade and allows for the existence of magic. Naturally such source, if discovered, would attract all kinds of people that would try to use it for their own good. Just imagine the kind of power that allows you to extensively improve your magical abilities, or change reality, or even create new worlds! The only problem is that due to its original ‘neutrality’ and susceptibility to external influences (much like spirits themselves) any attempt to wield this energy for your own selfish purpose will most likely result in corruption and produce something utterly twisted in the end.
    Throughout the history of DA the Void’s been corrupted multiple times. I think the Forgotten Ones might have been the first ones to try and wield its power, but in the process they accidentally passed some of their negative traits on it. Malice, suffering, disease etc. - all came from the outside world with the people who tried to use the Void, but ended up creating something horrible, or rather becoming something horrible. Perhaps when Andruil came to the Void she tried to create a new type of magic (Void magic?), but what she got in the end was Blight (and thus Blight magic).
    As to the actual location of the Void, I get the feeling that it's not exactly physical, but rather that in order to reach it or access it you need to enter a certain state of mind. Perhaps it can only be done in dreams. Maybe it flows through the world like the Force, haha. Dunno.

    I just had this thought after stumbling upon this video and watching....
    What if.. the sky below is the sky above?
    Imagine the sky as a inner surface of a sphere. In the middle of that sphere is flat disc formed of the Titans.
    To breach the sky would be to reach Fade, as seen in Inquisition.

    I think the void is just another plane like the fade. although it is much more separated from Thedas because the fade is meant to be apart of Thedas. the fade is only artificially on its own plane because of the veil. the void naturally exists on its own plane

  • @AriKitsune19
    @AriKitsune19 7 лет назад +2

    In Dragon Age: Until We Sleep (chapter 3), Aurelian Titus says this: 'There are void places, gaps between dreams' (similar to the raw Fade). Similarly, a memory in Vir Dirthara mentions this: '...an island floating in a void.' There's also the Anvil of the Void from Dragon Age: Origins that allowed Caridin to turn LIVING dwarves into golems with the use of lyrium, which could hold a small portion of the Void.
    I'm not sure what to make of this. The island floating could be somewhere in a smaller part of the Fade that can't be accessible by any means. As for the ANvil though, I'm not too sure. I know I'm not that good with theories; it's just a guess.

    • @TheKingdomEntertainment
      @TheKingdomEntertainment  7 лет назад +1

      Ganimercenary I'm not sure what to make of it either. I think the Anvil is probably just a coincidence, and the floating island may not refer to the actual Void. It may just be a figure of speech. Then again, maybe not. As for the gaps between dreams, I think that COULD match with the Chantry's belief about the Void.
      Thanks for the comment! :)

    If it is a planet, which we do not know, but it probably is, that is, it is round, then it is quite obvious the planet is either hollow or there is a cave big enough to make it a "hollow Earth" for all ins and purposes. To have sky like this underground you need at least a few hundreds of kilometers of cave. :) That is a cave every dwarf would be proud of!

    Also, the sky inside the earth can be explained by a terrarium. If I'm not mistaken, terrariums kinda mimic that. Like rain and humidity and whatnot if kept sealed

    To me the Void sounds like a place from the fade. Since the fade is always shifting and changing. wouldn't the Void be an amazing twine place for andruil to hunt in?! a place eternally changing, never certain on what or who you are hunting...the perfect place for a true huntress?!?

  • @Jirelle01

    Very interesting. Perhaps you are right that the "sky" in the wellspring (Descent) is the "door" to the Void? What stands out to me in Chanticle 14:11 is this
    Here lies the abyss, the well of all souls.
    From these emerald waters doth life begin anew.
    Come to me, child, and I shall embrace you.
    In my arms lies Eternity.
    On the wiki of the Void (also known as the Abyss) it also says this: This fragment is where Andraste goes to speak to the Maker for the first time and convinces him to forgive mankind. It describes a beautiful temple deep under the earth surrounded by emerald waters. Perhaps it's a well of souls? (emerald waters sure sound a lot like the wellspring) Or perhaps it's sold as such but in truth upon entering it it's just a void. And perhaps in this void there is a place or island (a memory in the Virdirthara mentions an island floating in a void) where the Forgotten Ones resided? Maybe it was once a place for rebirth, a way to balance all the creation but it was corrupted? Maybe that's where the Blight came from, maybe the Forgotten Ones (looking at you Anaris) messed with the souls/energy (maybe even a dead Titan?) and created the Blight? Something makes me think back to DAO, namely that I believe that darkspawn do not have souls. Isn't it with Morrigan's ritual that she explains that when the Archdemon dies it's soul transfers to the nearest being that is tainted? If it's a darkspawn it will simply reform into the archdemon again (just like with Corypheus and the Grey Wardens) but if it were a Grey Warden they would both be destroyed (probably because the Grey Wardens do have a soul). So I'm guessing that the Void was perhaps supposed to be a reincarnation facility but it went wrong? Just throwing some thoughts out there.
    Something else to note however is that the entrance to the Void is most likely sealed;
    Our gods saw him as a brother, and they trusted him when he said that they must keep to the heavens while he arranged a truce. And the Forgotten Ones trusted him also when he said he would arrange for the defeat of our gods, if only the Forgotten Ones would return to the abyss for a time. They trusted Fen'Harel, and they were all of them betrayed. And Fen'Harel sealed them away so they could never again walk among the People.
    (codex The Tale of Fen'Harel's Triumph)

    I thought that you can visit the Void through the Fade, because it's build in similar way ("emerald waters"). So first you have a world of the living, that is seperated from the Fade by the Veil, then the Fade itself, and at last the Void. All mortal visit the Fade while dreaming (except from dwarves). My guess is that you can enter the Void, but it's very hard and very dangerous, because you have to put your body in a state of a very deep sleep...similar to death itself (so it's only possible for mages, because they are the only ones, who are aware during dreams in Fade). Though, I have no idea, how Andruil entered the Void physically. Time will tell :D

    Frankly after Descent I'm not sure how physics work in the world of Thedas. Even more, how will the planet look from outer space? Maybe the void IS the fade version of outer space, like some aurora around the planet. I doubt Solas will be powerful enough to influence solar systems.

      Not quite. The Blight was in the Black City before they got there, as Corypheus reveals. The magisters breaching it unleashed it back into our world, but the theory is that it came from somewhere else even before that.

      My personal theory: The seven magisters probably discover The void (and the blight) first and the use this new corrupted power to breach The golden city with the objective to destroy the maker itself...
      Also apparently If you want to reach THE VOID you need a colossal amount of magic power just to find them and stay there (somthing like combine the power of all the mages in Kirkwal AND ferelden)
